Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith
Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith
Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship
In this experience report paper we present our experience with the development of oral assessments as final examinations in three introductory computing courses. The choice of this type of summative assessment was prompted by the emergency remote instruction instituted in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester, across colleges and universities in the U.S., due to the coronavirus pandemic. The principles that guided our oral assessment design were: to develop a more comprehensive measure of student competence and mitigate exam cheating; to facilitate communication and workplace skills through student-teacher interaction; and to alleviate negative emotions associated with traditional summative assessments. …

Developing Strategic Plans For An Aligned Approach To 21st Century Skills Integration, Claire Scoular, Ian Teo
Developing Strategic Plans For An Aligned Approach To 21st Century Skills Integration, Claire Scoular, Ian Teo
Assessment and Reporting
This report describes an online course developed to support education systems to build an aligned and sustainable approach to integration of 21st Century Skills (21CS). 21CS are those skills that are considered particularly important to succeed in today’s knowledge-based society in which innovation and technology are predominant. Prominent examples include critical thinking, creative thinking, and collaboration, and such skills need to be better understood in order for them to be integrated. While different countries may have their own frameworks or priorities surrounding 21CS, a consistent approach to integration can still be achieved with a shared understanding from all stakeholders within …

Becoming Fitly Joined Together: Unifying The Church Body For Vision Manifestation, Keisha Hodge
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This DMIN action research project fulfilled the purpose of increasing awareness within the four churches in the Greater Berea District concerning the value and function of having a vision. Preintervention and postintervention questionnaires, interviews, hypothetical case studies, and a class-styled intervention was employed. The one-day intervention educated participants concerning how a vision supports the work of the church, which enables it to be more fruitful. Furthermore, the class equipped attendees with a biblical foundation showing that God is a proponent and encourager of vision. The necessity of this study was determined when the researcher witnessed a church vision being cast …

Exploring The Limits Of Strategic Thought: Evaluating How Different Communication Modalities Affect The Nature Of Strategic Decision-Making Using Cognitive Hierarchy, Stephen D. Donnel
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines and quantifies the degree to which both information communication modality and the situational complexity affect individuals' ability to process the provided information and determine an effective strategy. Human subject testing herein consists of benign benevolent intervention involving the presentation of a series of strategic situations. For each situation, a participant attempts to identify their best response for a two-player, normal-form game with complete information. In each such game, players seek to maximize their own utility while considering their own actions, their opponent's actions, and each player's respective preferences over outcomes resulting from the possible combinations of actions. …

Bibliometric Survey On Multipurpose Face Recognition System Using Deep Learning, Priyanka Tupe-Waghmare, Rahul Raghvendra Joshi Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Face recognition is a new concept coming up lately and flourishing in the field of network access and multimedia information systems. Since humans are at the focus of attention in variety of applications containing videos, the concept of face recognition is rising in popularity. Several areas involving network security, retrieval and indexing of the content, and compression of videos gain a lot of benefit from the face recognition systems and related technology. Controlling the access of the networks with the help of facial recognition not only makes it difficult for the hackers to steal the information but also makes the …

Address Practices Of Deaf Undergraduate Students And Faculty: A Study Of Language, Identity, And Community, Brenda Nicodemus, Maicol Formentelli, Keith Cagle, Jay Pittman
Articles
The members of a community have conventionalized linguistic structures to convey both the content of a message and the social status of the interlocutors. Crucial in the codification of interpersonal relations are address terms, which are determined by pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic norms related to the language system, the local communicative event and the broader social context. The study examines the usage of address terms (direct address, reference, introductions) at a bilingual university that uses American Sign Language (ASL) as language of instruction and socialization, and English in teaching/learning materials, email correspondence, written announcements, inter alia. Based on interviews with Deaf …

BACKGROUND: The transition to parenting-that is, the journey from preconception through pregnancy and postpartum periods-is one of the most emotionally charged and information-intense times for individuals and families. While there is a developing body of literature on the use and impact of digital technology on the information behaviors of children, adolescents, and young adults, personal use of digital technology during the transition to parenting and in support of infants to 2 years of age is relatively understudied.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to enhance our understanding of the ways digital technologies contribute to the experience of the transition …

Social Media User Relationship Framework (Smurf), Anne David, Sarah Morris, Gareth Appleby-Thomas
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The use of social media has spread through many aspects of society, allowing millions of individuals, corporate as well as government entities to leverage the opportunities it affords. These opportunities often end up being exploited by a small percentage of the user community who use it for objectionable or unlawful activities; for example, trolling, cyber bullying, grooming, luring. In some cases, these unlawful activities result in investigations where swift retrieval of critical evidence required in order to save a life.
This paper presents a proof of concept (PoC) framework for social media user attribution. The framework aims to provide digital …
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
Education Doctorate Dissertations
A designer’s professional identity is constructed throughout a designer’s life and is developed through life experiences and education. While understanding the general importance of a professional identity is often clear to recent design graduates, developing it requires becoming self-aware of what traits constitutes designer professional identity (DPI). Kunrath, Cash and Yi-ling (2016) define DPI as the synthesis of personal attributes and design skills. However, the development of this full complement of DPI traits is often ignored and ill-supported in design education curriculum. A student’s DPI, if under-developed, can be a barrier to successfully transitioning from student to professional. Design educators …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Children with autism have difficulties in social skills and communication skills. But fortunately, currently, there are many ways developed by experts to help children with autism so that they are expected to grow and develop better, among them are social stories. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all public places closed by governments are no exception to schools. The COVID-19 pandemic is a heavy blow for children with autism, including family. They are very vulnerable to learning and emotional disorders because therapy services have stopped and distance learning is difficult for them. The purpose of this research is to find out …

Flip, Split Or Extend – Helping ‘Mum And Dad Developers’ Navigate Housing Design Processes, Nicholas Temov
ServDes Conference Series
How do we apply service design theories to improve the way ‘mum and dad developers’ navigate housing design processes to achieve more liveable house designs in Australia's middle-ring suburbs?
With over 300,000 people migrating to Australia’s capital cities in 2018/19 alone (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2020), there is pressure on our middle ring suburbs to house many of these people. Joining established architects and building designers are ‘mum and dad developers’ who are inspired by their family, friends and reality TV to ‘have a go’ at developing their own land – either by building in their backyard or replacing a …

NASA’s human spaceflight efforts are moving towards long-duration exploration missions requiring asynchronous communication between onboard crew and an increasingly remote ground support. In current missions aboard the International Space Station, there is a near real-time communication loop between Mission Control Center and astronauts. This communication is essential today to support operations, maintenance, and science requirements onboard, without which many tasks would no longer be feasible. As NASA takes the next leap into a new era of human space exploration, new methods and tools compensating for the lack of continuous, real-time communication must be explored. The Human-Computer Interaction Group at NASA …

Marine Resource Specialization In Viking Age Iceland: Exploitation Of Seabirds And Fish On Hegranes In Skagafjörður, Grace M. Cesario
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation focuses on the zooarchaeology of four Viking Age sites on Hegranes, located in Skagafjörður, north Iceland, in order to understand the early economy of the region and place it in a broader context with other settlement sites across the island. This research helps to understand the ways the earliest people in Iceland provided for themselves through niche construction activities that included landscape domestication, animal husbandry, bird hunting, and fishing. It also looks at the zooarchaeological indicators of household autonomy to understand the early social and political landscape in Skagafjörður. At these sites, there is evidence for a specialized …
Finding Female Recognition: A Career Comparison Of Female And Male Graphic Designers, Jaclyn Larsen
Finding Female Recognition: A Career Comparison Of Female And Male Graphic Designers, Jaclyn Larsen
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
It is common among many career paths that men achieve higher status jobs as compared to women. However, the fight for women’s rights has been effective for many years and there has been a lot of progress made. Despite this progress, this gap still exists. My real interest is in what differentiates these men from women in the same careers. Graphic design is a gender-inclusive career that is not stereotyped towards one gender or another. Although it has been around since the early 1920s, it is still a relatively modern concept due to the new technologies that have changed the …

The Multifunctional Roles Of Polyphenols In Plant-Herbivore Interactions, Sukhman Singh, Ishveen Kaur, Rupesh R. Kariyat
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
There is no argument to the fact that insect herbivores cause significant losses to plant productivity in both natural and agricultural ecosystems. To counter this continuous onslaught, plants have evolved a suite of direct and indirect, constitutive and induced, chemical and physical defenses, and secondary metabolites are a key group that facilitates these defenses. Polyphenols—widely distributed in flowering plants—are the major group of such biologically active secondary metabolites. Recent advances in analytical chemistry and metabolomics have provided an opportunity to dig deep into extraction and quantification of plant-based natural products with insecticidal/insect deterrent activity, a potential sustainable pest management strategy. …

Historical Monographs
The three-year span between 1940 and 1942 was critical in Henry Eccles’s life and career. These years mark not only the beginnings of the direct involvement of the United States in World War II but also Eccles’s first surface warship command, the command that earned him high professional recognition—the Navy Cross and the Silver Star. The diary, reports, and letters assembled here allow the modern reader an unusual opportunity to enter a very different world and a very different time in naval history. The contents document Lt. Cdr. Henry E. Eccles’s trip by passenger ships from New York to Manila, …

Our Basic Course And Communication Skills Training: The Time For Innovation Is Now (Yes, Even In A Pandemic), Suzy Prentiss
Basic Communication Course Annual
Our basic communication courses have always been important for our students. COVID-19 presents us with many challenges as well as opportunities for innovation and reflection. We can now heed the call offered by Joyce et al. in 2019 to match the skills most in demand with those we teach and infuse intentionality and value throughout our courses. As we pivot to online education and digital communication, how can we craft the basic course to provide effective communication skills training in engaging, empowering and impactful ways?
