The Role Of States And The Federal Government In Changing The Scope Of College Athletics Through Name, Image, And Likeness Legislation, Mckenna Lahr
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis explores the complex issue of compensating collegiate athletes, particularly through the monetization of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The introduction highlights the significant revenues generated by collegiate sports, particularly basketball and football, which are contrasted sharply against the lack of direct compensation to the student-athletes who contribute to these earnings. The NCAA's stringent regulations prohibit student-athletes from receiving compensation beyond scholarships and educational benefits, which many critics argue is insufficient relative to the income they generate. The conclusion of the thesis reviews the potential impact of state and federal legislative changes that allow athletes to profit from …
Analyzing The Main Drivers Of Professional Sports Franchise Valuations In The United States, Joseph M.Myers
Analyzing The Main Drivers Of Professional Sports Franchise Valuations In The United States, Joseph M.Myers
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Extensive academic literature has examined sports analytics and other drivers of on-field performance in sports. Far less has studied components of franchise valuation, including its relationship with sports analytics implementation. In this project, I want to determine the primary independent drivers of franchise valuation, whether implementation of sports analytics has been beneficial, and the degree of ownership control of valuation. I will be running multiple regression analyses for several quantitative variables and ANOVA to determine significant differences between each sport. I expect to find winning track records increase long-term value, benefits of analytics through efficient payroll allocation, and differences between …

Winning Investment: The Strategic Implications Of The Growth Of Sabermetrics In Japanese Baseball, David Trent Pagliarini
Senior Theses
This thesis examines Japanese baseball and how the use of analytics and statistical research has been implemented into Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), compared to its North American counterpart, Major League Baseball (MLB). Due to the large financial implications of the MLB, teams have fully adopted the use of advanced metrics to find competitive disparities and advantages in roster construction, game strategies, and player development. Because of the long history attached to baseball in Japan, many cultural differences have adapted the game and recently slowed the growth of sabermetrics. While the NPB is beginning to understand the competitive value that analytics …

Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Student participation in interscholastic athletics reached record levels in 2019-20 for the third consecutive year in Kentucky (KHSAA, 2020). Sport marketers have strongly advocated social media as a powerful and effective tool to promote sporting events at all levels. However, existing studies rarely focus on the trend for promoting interscholastic sports through social media platforms. How Can Coaches Properly Prepare Student-Athletes For A Career After Athletics?, Joel Krenz
How Can Coaches Properly Prepare Student-Athletes For A Career After Athletics?, Joel Krenz
Leadership Education Capstones
Most of the time a student-athlete’s athletic career will end after college, but what then? So many collegiate athletes have put so much focus into their sport over the previous 10-15 years that they tend to struggle when faced with the reality that they are done. No collegiate athlete can make the transition from sport to career alone, which is why coaches, administrators, and teachers need to know how to properly prepare student-athletes for a career after athletics. This study will look to find the best ways that the faculty of an institution who work closely with student-athletes can help …

The world was struck by turmoil as the COVID-19 virus surged to the surface. Affecting the lives of many. In a matter of days, the process of daily living got a new meaning. The new lifestyle of living consisted of wearing masks, self-quarantining for fourteen days, and socially distancing six feet apart. From the perspective of a college student, life was flipped upside down. Classes were moved online, and students were asked to not be on campuses across the country for months on end. Collegiate student-athletes had it much rougher. Due to the global pandemic multiple sport seasons were cancelled …
The Advantages And Disadvantages To Small Town School Districts And Their Communities After Athletics Consolidation, Kacey Lane
Leadership Education Capstones
Nothing brings a small rural town together like high school sports. Unfortunately, when high school sports hit challenging times, support for programs and participation in programs decrease. When sports programs hit low numbers in participation they need to think about the program's future. Some schools consider eliminating the programs. Graves (2010) stated that communities often resist full school consolidation to be able to protect their sports teams. Graves (2010) believes that to lose a school and its colors would relinquish one’s identity. Small communities thrive off the school districts and take pride in their academics and athletics. With the lack …

Why Do Tourists Accept Lodging Through Accommodation Sharing Platforms? Model Development And Model Comparison, Ge Zhu
Theses and Dissertations
The P2P accommodation sharing market has emerged as a disruptive innovation as it has exponentially expanded globally, even though this market is still emerging and has not been used by most people. This study investigates why tourists accept the sharing platforms and how to promote this service. A literature review on innovation adoption models was conducted to select a proper theoretical framework to investigate travelers’ motivation for using Airbnb. According to model-evaluation principles and literature analysis, this self-efficacy-based value adoption model (SVM) was selected, which is derived from social cognitive theory’s reciprocal determination. Based on the SVM, an extended SVM …

Think about yourself traveling to somewhere in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s repeatedly. What would be the most significant difference among those four periods? There would be many differences, including clearer sky and clean air. Imagine how you would plan your three-day vacation. You might need several travel guidebooks and travel agents to plan your trip if you were in the 1990s. In the 2020s, you just need to download some mobile apps to plan and even create organized travel itineraries. After arriving at the destination, how would you find the way to a tourism attraction? You just need …
An Examination Of Sport Ticket Price Acceptability And Surcharge Transparency In Partitioned Pricing, Misun Won
An Examination Of Sport Ticket Price Acceptability And Surcharge Transparency In Partitioned Pricing, Misun Won
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a recent price policy change in the sport industry that ticket resale companies attempted to reveal any additional fees upfront to increase price transparency and protect consumers in the marketplace. This policy change was announced in early 2020 (Thompson, 2020). However, as the coronavirus outbreak affected live events to be canceled, become virtual, or have a limited facility capacity (Apstein, 2020; Perry, 2020), it disabled the resale companies to see consumer responses to their policy change that may increase or decrease ticket revenues. In addition, charging additional fees to the ticket face value is a form of …
Intervention Strategies For Guiding Intercollegiate Student Athletes To A Greater Sense Of Career Maturity, Laura Kastler
Intervention Strategies For Guiding Intercollegiate Student Athletes To A Greater Sense Of Career Maturity, Laura Kastler
Masters Projects
Previous studies have indicated a lack of career maturity within the intercollegiate student athlete population. This can apply to institutions of all divisions across the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Various institutions are not implementing proper intervention strategies to guide their student athletes to thrive in their life after sports. This project explains this problem in robust detail and establishes different themes of improvement through literature that can be utilized by university career services and athletic development programs. To guide this student population to a greater sense of career maturity, there needs to be more on students athletes regarding their academic …
Positioning Customer Service Through Customer Journey Mapping In Service Consumption And Recovery, Dan Jin
Positioning Customer Service Through Customer Journey Mapping In Service Consumption And Recovery, Dan Jin
Theses and Dissertations
Customer journey mapping is a marketing research tool that has increasingly captured marketers’ attention over the past decades by helping commercial businesses understand customers’ motivations and behaviors. Despite acknowledging the importance of customer experiences, previous literature has generally focused on the firm’s response (supply-side) to the customer. This often considers the service provider’s efforts in the production of goods and services using Goods-Dominant-Logic (GDL), and facilitation with the customer with Service-Dominant-Logic (SDL). However, supply-side logic has largely ignored the customer responses (demand-side) regarding the service operations that appear to be an important function in customer journey mapping. Customers’ demand-side logic …
“The Lifeblood Of College Sports”: The Ncaa’S Dominant Institutional Logic And The Byproducts Of An (Over)Emphasis On Recruiting, Chris Corr
Theses and Dissertations
In big-time college football, successful recruiting is the foundation on which winning programs stand. Power-5 football and men’s basketball operate under a dominant institutional logic that values generating revenue above all else. Winning generates revenue and, accordingly, Power-5 stakeholders are often engulfed in their unique athletic roles. The system propagates adherence to a singular focus that emphasizes winning and revenue generation. This dominant institutional logic governing big-time college football has been dubbed jock capitalism (Southall & Nagel, 2009). While prominent theorists have analyzed college sports through an institutional logic perspective, a systematic examination of the Power-5 football recruiting process has …
