Herodotus And The Histories: Accounts Of Intercivilizational Contact, Carlos Alberto Ríos Gordillo Jan 2021

Herodotus And The Histories: Accounts Of Intercivilizational Contact, Carlos Alberto Ríos Gordillo

Comparative Civilizations Review

The globalization of the earth, the old colonial dream of the sixteenth century, is still a challenge to historical understanding. In the contemporary debate, comparative history and global history have gained increasing interest as we try to explain the four parts of the planet in an overview, which allows us to think about the world, modernity, and universal history in a different way than a simple European expansion in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The theater of observation has become global when it relates Japan to China, India to New Spain, Portugal to Spain, Britain to the Netherlands to Indians, …

Letter To The Editor: The Pahlavis And The Other Side Of The Coins, Ardavan Khoshnood

Comparative Civilizations Review

It was with great interest that I read “Political Power of Iranian Hierocracies” by János Jany published in Comparative Civilizations Review (83, 2020: 67-102). Writing about Iranian history is not an easy task because historical points of view have been highly politicized. Such is particularly the case when discussing the Pahlavi dynasty, particularly its founder, Reza Shah Pahlavi, and his successor, Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi. It is therefore of major importance to be transparent and, when feasible, to present the varying views and schools of thought which may exist with respect to the Pahlavi dynasty (Khoshnood, 2019).

Comparative Civilizations Review

When early civilizations were listed back at the beginning of the modern discipline that constitutes the comparative study of civilizations, one of the greatest of them all was yet essentially unknown. It was only about a century ago that information was brought forward on the possible existence of this most interesting, extensive, and influential Bronze Age civilization, the Indus River Valley Civilization.

Christopher Peet. Practicing Transcendence: Axial Age Spiritualities For A World In Crisis, Constance Wilkinson

Comparative Civilizations Review

This unusual and enlightening scholarly work by Christopher Peet draws our contemplative attention to what post-war German philosopher Karl Jaspers called "the Axial Age," a "span of several centuries from 800 to 200 BCE . . . constituting a dividing line or 'axis' between a long prehistory of human beings before and the emergence of a world history after."

Macgregor Knox And Williamson Murray, Eds. The Dynamics Of Military Revolution, 1300–2050, Stephen T. Satkiewicz

Comparative Civilizations Review

Carl von Clausewitz famously declared “War is but the continuation of politics by other means.” It could just as easily be declared that war is the continuation of civilization by other means, concerning how different societies and cultures fight can be reflective of their distinct characters as much as any other factor. The study of war from the civilizational perspective is not new; for example, former ISCSC presidents Pitirim Sorokin and Matthew Melko did their own studies related to the matter. Into this mix come MacGregor Knox and Williamson Murray in their edited volume The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300–2050 …

Rachel M. Stein, Vengeful Citizens, Violent States. A Theory Of War And Revenge, Jamie Gonzalez

Comparative Civilizations Review

From the very outset, Western civilization postulated revenge as a significant cause of armed conflict. The Iliad’s storyline, the first extant literary text in our Western tradition, revolves around the concept of a Greek retaliatory military campaign against a foreign enemy. The Greeks sail to Priam’s city, intending to make the Trojans pay for the abduction of Helen. The first historiography work in the Western canon (Herodotus’ Histories) posits a framework of an eternal cycle of revenge between East and West. The “Father of History” structures the narrative at the beginning of his work as a cycle of abduction …

Impact Of Algorithmic Bias On Hospital Risk Stratification Scores Among Insurance Recipients, Peter Zdunek, Sarah Reed, Saima Anis, J. Alex Wrem Jan 2021

Impact Of Algorithmic Bias On Hospital Risk Stratification Scores Among Insurance Recipients, Peter Zdunek, Sarah Reed, Saima Anis, J. Alex Wrem

Phase 1

Introduction: Artificial intelligence-based modelling has created an opportunity to improve upon existing hospital readmission risk score systems by redefining priority and uncovering new criteria, but inherent systematic errors known as algorithmic bias can impact applicability. This study evaluated whether there is racial bias for unplanned readmission risk scores in a novel model prepared for the CMS AI challenge.

Methods: The study population provided by the CMS challenge included Medicare recipients from 2012 (unique beneficiaries n=1,667,362, total claims n=34,233,260). Risk scores for unplanned hospital readmissions were projected on the basis of clinical and demographic criteria, including age, sex, comorbidities, and prior …

Customers visit restaurants for varying reasons ranging from utilitarian – to satisfy hunger – to hedonistic – displaying cultural capital (Bourdieu, 1984) more recently theorized as culinary capital (Naccarato & Lebesco, 2012). Restaurants are even more significant in the new ‘experience economy’ (Pine & Gilmore, 1998) where lunch or dinner are conceptualized as ‘meal experiences.’ There is widespread acceptance of the pivotal role (about 33% of tourist spend) that food now plays in the tourism product of any country (Quigley et al., 2019).

A Model For Crafting Diversity, Inclusion, Respect, And Equity (Dire) Policy Statements Toward Catalyzing Organizational Change, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, Breanca Merrit, Ann C. Kimble-Hill

Founder’s College - Scholarship and Professional Work

In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) community has had to reflect on how their organizations can address their disparities in identity representation. To that end, the ACS Committee on Minority Affairs (CMA) has been called upon to advise various levels of the chemistry enterprise in their interventions, such as structured and actionable policy statements. As a result, this work was created to provide a model for all organizations to write catalytic diversity, inclusion, respect, and equity (DIRE) policy statements. The model herein acknowledges active tensions and leverages theory, analysis, and practical …

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman Jan 2021

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman

Journal of International Engineering Education

As the world becomes more connected and globalized, the problems that engineers are called upon to solve are increasingly complex and interdependent. Unfortunately, engineering coursework has traditionally focused on abstract and closed-ended problem solving, offering few opportunities for students to develop these skills. In this practice paper, we argue for the importance of integrating the humanities and engineering to understand the multiple and intersecting layers of context in an engineering project. We then describe the Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects course, which we developed to help students acquire this perspective. The course was piloted in Spring 2021 in response to the obstacles …

Surviving “Los Sures”: An Anthropological Reflection On The Nuyoricans Lived Experiences In South Williamsburg, Brooklyn And The Current Urban Context Of Gentrification In New York City, Victor Vázquez, Ashley Mcafee

Departmental Papers (S&A)

The following article presents an anthropological and historical reflection on the Puerto Rican inner-city neighborhood better known as “Los Sures” in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City (NYC). The analysis will explore the contemporary academic discussion regarding the following concepts: poverty, the welfare State, the discourse surrounding welfare recipients’ culture, inner-city living conditions, and the current context of gentrification. Methodologically, the article presents an ethnographic reflection based on fieldwork experiences and interviews conducted on residents of the previous “Los Sures” and still living in NYC. Finally, we present a critical reflection on the poverty, welfare State policy, and shed light …

Who’S Doing The Dishes?: Reproductive Labor, Gender, And Middle-Class Subjectivities In Rabat, Morocco, Miriam Ruth Dike Jan 2021

Who’S Doing The Dishes?: Reproductive Labor, Gender, And Middle-Class Subjectivities In Rabat, Morocco, Miriam Ruth Dike

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

The dissertation uses reproductive labor as a lens to examine how gendered and classed subjectivities are continuously created, performed, and subtly transformed within and outside of urban middle-class Moroccan households. Reproductive labor is broadly defined as unpaid and paid labor associated with caregiving and domestic roles including but not limited to cleaning, cooking, and child care. Subjectivities are the perspectives, feelings, beliefs, and desires of subjects within uneven relations of power. This research is based on seventeen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Rabat-Sale, Morocco including fifty-seven semi-structured interviews with married working- and middle-class Moroccans, as well as extensive participant observation …
