Miami's Metropolitan Government: Retrospect And Prospect, Raymond A. Mohl Dec 2021

Miami's Metropolitan Government: Retrospect And Prospect, Raymond A. Mohl

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the past several years, the Miami metropolitan area has experienced fast-paced, almost frantic, urban change. The Liberty City and Overtown race riots of 1980 and 1982, Haitian-Cuban refugee problems, high rates of violent crime and murder, and a lucrative drug smuggling trade have all kept Miami in the national news. A new and dynamic urban economy based on international banking, foreign investment, and a prosperous Latin American-Caribbean trade has insulated Miami from the national economic recession. Indeed, during the past decade, Miami has been transformed into the trade and cultural capital of the Caribbean basin. New skyscraper construction in …

From Orange To Green "Gold": The Roots Of The Asparagus Fern Industry In Florida, Robert D. Manning Dec 2021

From Orange To Green "Gold": The Roots Of The Asparagus Fern Industry In Florida, Robert D. Manning

Florida Historical Quarterly

Central Florida was a sparsely settled frontier at the end of Reconstruction. In the 1870s and 1880s, however, an influx of pioneers transformed this wilderness into a loose network of settlements. These early communities were linked by the steamships that navigated the St. Johns and Oklawaha rivers down through the chain-of-lakes— Lake Griffin, Haines Creek, Lake Eustis, Dead River, and Lake Harris.1 This river freight route, which ran from Jacksonville to Yalaha, soon became obsolete with the expansion of the railroad in the 1870s; regional development was no longer restricted by geographic proximity to navigable bodies of water. The increasing …

A Study On The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Emergency Electronic Learning During The Coronavirus Lockdown, Marie Camille Cuisia-Villanueva, Jayrome Lleva Núñez

FDLA Journal

This research paper tackles the relationship of socioeconomic status (SES) to students’ emergency electronic learning (e-Learning) during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown period in the Philippines. The study investigates the impact of accessibility to the students’ performance in distance learning. By looking at these variables, the researchers seek to answer the research question, ‘what is the impact of the students’ family socioeconomic status on their accessibility to emergency e-Learning’. This mini-study will be viewed in the lens of human capital theory guided by Gary Becker (1964).

Identity Salience Moderates The Effect Of Social Dominance Orientation On Covid-19 ‘Rule Bending’, Rhiannon Macdonnell, Bonnie Simpson, Jennifer Chernishenko, Shreya Jain

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Amidst the economic, political, and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, contrasting responses to government mandated and recommended mitigation strategies have posed many challenges for governments as they seek to persuade individuals to adhere to prevention guidelines. Much research has subsequently examined the tendency of individuals to either follow (or not) such guidelines, and yet a ‘grey area’ also exists wherein many rules are subject to individual interpretation. In a large study of Canadians (N =1032, Mage =34.39, 52% female; collected April 6, 2020), we examine how social dominance orientation (SDO) as an individual difference predicts individual propensity to …

Reported Reasons For Avoiding The Covid-19 Vaccine Vary By Age, Kelsey Wilber Dec 2021

Reported Reasons For Avoiding The Covid-19 Vaccine Vary By Age, Kelsey Wilber

Population Health Research Brief Series

Despite various efforts by governments, businesses, and health care providers, a large share of the U.S. population remains resistant to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Understanding why individuals refuse the vaccine is important for tailoring interventions to improve vaccination rates. This brief examines age differences in reasons reported for not getting the vaccine. Concerns about possible side effects are the most common among every age group, but other reported reasons, including lack of trust in the vaccine and the government vary by age group. Findings suggest that tackling COVID-19 misinformation is critical to increase vaccination rates in the United States.

Dietary Power And Self-Determination Among Female Farmers In Burkina Faso: A Proposal For A Food Consumption Agency Metric, Zoe Tkaczyk Dec 2021

Dietary Power And Self-Determination Among Female Farmers In Burkina Faso: A Proposal For A Food Consumption Agency Metric, Zoe Tkaczyk

Geography Honors Projects

While food security is traditionally defined with four pillars, there are increasing calls for an additional two (agency and sustainability) so that we may more comprehensively conceptualize all dimensions of food security. However, the challenge is that it is difficult to effectively measure agency, a person’s control over their food system. Measuring women’s agency is especially critical in Africa South of the Sahara where women play prominent roles in farming and food preparation. This honors thesis explores the feasibility of creating a metric to measure agency within food systems and gender relations using data related to food security and dietary …

Community College Stigma And Its Effect On Illinois High School Seniors’ College Choice, Bradley S. Griffith Dec 2021

Community College Stigma And Its Effect On Illinois High School Seniors’ College Choice, Bradley S. Griffith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore community college stigma and how it affects college choice for high school seniors in the state of Illinois. Community colleges nationwide are facing significant challenges such as enrollment decline, funding cutbacks, and declining birth rates. In order to effectively combat these challenges, community college leaders must be fully cognizant of any barriers preventing prospective students from attending the 2-year institutions. Community college stigma has recently gained national attention through various higher education publications but has been rarely researched in previous studies. This mixed methods study distributed surveys to 27 high schools varying …

The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr. Dec 2021

The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the fall of 1930 Harper and Brothers, an old and prestigious northern publishing house, brought out a collection of essays by “twelve Southerners,” entitled I’ll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition. Described at the time as a Southern or Southern Agrarian manifesto, the collection came into existence, according to one of the contributors, as “a sort of happening”— “a coalescence of circumstances and people and conditions” unlikely to reoccur. The contributors, known as the Agrarians, were for the most part natives of the rural, small-town areas of the westernmost South, and most at some point had …

Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer Dec 2021

Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In ethics, prudence is an essential skill in making informed decisions. Although several studies in various fields have dealt with the notion, few empirical studies have addressed one of its inextricable aspects: anticipation. To gain a better understanding of the notion, this study questioned fifteen leaders whose peers consider to be “visionary” in their respective fields. The results of this qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews describe the fundamental aspects of anticipation according to three categories: reasoning and trend analysis, implementation and strategy, and personality and values.

Association Between Teenage Pregnancy And Family Factors: An Analysis Of The Philippine National Demographic And Health Survey 2017, Kozue Tabei, Erlinda Susana S. Cuisia-Cruz, Chris Smith, Xerxes Seposo

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Adolescence is a key developmental period in one’s life course; health-related behaviors of adolescents can be linked to lifelong consequences, which affect their future health. Previous studies highlight the role of family and its significant association with adolescents’ health. In East Asia and the Pacific, the Philippines is the only country that is showing an upward trend of teenage pregnancy while other countries in the region have declining teenage pregnancy rates. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the association between teenage pregnancy and family factors, specifically parent structure. Data for the study were extracted from the Philippine National Demographic and …

Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas A. Hagerty Dec 2021

Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas A. Hagerty

Dissertations

Patients' experiences in hospitals are important indicators of quality. Patients' opinions about their experiences in hospitals are significantly associated with their opinions of those hospitals' nursing services. Nurses in the US have traditionally focused on patients' experiences, and Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations is early evidence of that focus. This study tested Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations in nursing using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on data from 12,436 patient experience surveys. Two hypotheses were supported: (a) patient experience data (i.e. responses on the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems - Hospital [HCAHPS] survey) collected from patients in …
