Positive Influences On Why They Stay: A Qualitative Study On The Contributing Factors To Teacher Retention In Rural North Dakota, Jennifer A. Jung
Positive Influences On Why They Stay: A Qualitative Study On The Contributing Factors To Teacher Retention In Rural North Dakota, Jennifer A. Jung
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
An alarming number of educators are leaving the field within the first five years of employment. Midwestern rural schools experience a slightly higher percentage of turnover than do their urban counterparts. Due to this shortage of teachers, many districts across the nation have employed strategies to recruit and retain competent teachers. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach seeking to identify common themes among teachers who are long-staying teachers in a rural district (those with 1000 or fewer students). Both the social constructivism and teacher career cycle theoretical frameworks have been utilized to support the researcher’s understanding of rural teachers' …

Formalist Textualism And The Cernauskas Problem, Larry Alexander
Formalist Textualism And The Cernauskas Problem, Larry Alexander
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
In a recent article, Tara Grove distinguishes between what she calls “formalist textualism” and “flexible textualism.” Formalist textualism is really another term for literalism, in which statutory and constitutional language is given its semantic meaning—presumably its meaning at the time of enactment—in its “semantic context.” Grove illustrates the latter by pointing out that the phrase “domestic violence” appears in a statute that also mentions “insurrection,” thus suggesting that domestic violence there refers to acts similar to insurrection rather than to spousal abuse.
Flexible textualism, on the other hand, looks beyond the semantic meaning of the text and its semantic context …
Nature-Based Solutions In Environmental Planning: Ecosystem-Based Adaptations, Green Infrastructures, And Ecosystem Services To Promote Diversity In Urban Landscapes, Lorena Alves Carvalho Nascimento
Nature-Based Solutions In Environmental Planning: Ecosystem-Based Adaptations, Green Infrastructures, And Ecosystem Services To Promote Diversity In Urban Landscapes, Lorena Alves Carvalho Nascimento
Dissertations and Theses
Nature-based solutions encompass strategies that explore ecosystem-based adaptations, green infrastructures, and ecosystem services in environmental planning and landscape management. However, nature-based solutions do not always consider ecological values and perspectives from Black, Indigenous, and Global South population. This dissertation has three independent papers that explore the application of ecosystem-based adaptations, green infrastructures, and ecosystem services in communities unheard by environmental planning agencies. The first paper is a conceptual framework that used literature review and observations of current human-nature interactions to reflect how the criminalization, acculturation, and cultural appropriation of cultural ecosystem services have burdened Black and Indigenous identities. Recommendations for …
Correlating Sentiment In Reddit’S Wallstreetbets With The Stock Market Using Machine Learning Techniques, Sultan Ali Alzaabi
Correlating Sentiment In Reddit’S Wallstreetbets With The Stock Market Using Machine Learning Techniques, Sultan Ali Alzaabi
Theses
The issue that this study addresses is to observe whether there exists a statistical relation between the stock market and Reddit’s wallstreetbets. Previous research mainly focused on the relation between the stock market and Twitter. To gather data for the study, comments were scrapped from the subreddit wallstreetbets for a period of four months, Jan 1, 2021, till April 30, 2021. Different sentiment classifiers were, then, applied on a sample of the data to observe the most accurate classifier for the study. The study concluded that the most accurate sentiment classifier was an SVM classifier trained on 80% of Reddit …
Risk Factors For Poor Outcomes Among Patients With Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (Xdr-Tb): A Scoping Review, Karan Varshney, Beverly Anaele, Matthew Molaei, Rosemary Frasso, Vittorio Maio
Risk Factors For Poor Outcomes Among Patients With Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (Xdr-Tb): A Scoping Review, Karan Varshney, Beverly Anaele, Matthew Molaei, Rosemary Frasso, Vittorio Maio
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
In recent years, there has been an upsurge in cases of drug-resistant TB, and strains of TB resistant to all forms of treatment have begun to emerge; the highest level of resistance is classified as extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). There is an urgent need to prevent poor outcomes (death/default/failed treatment) of XDR-TB, and knowing the risk factors can inform such efforts. The objective of this scoping review was to therefore identify risk factors for poor outcomes among XDR-TB patients. We searched three scientific databases, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest, and identified 25 articles that examined relevant risk factors. Across the included …
“Living Document”: From Documents To Documentality, From Mimesis To Performative Indexicality, Ronald E. Day
“Living Document”: From Documents To Documentality, From Mimesis To Performative Indexicality, Ronald E. Day
Proceedings from the Document Academy
In this article, in distinction to documentation as an epistemic understanding of documents, I will discuss the epistemology of documentality as an indexical theory of documental functions, which I will develop through Bruno Latour’s notion of information. This notion of indexicality is different than Suzanne Briet’s notion of indexicality (which I have discussed elsewhere (Briet, 2006)).
I will begin this paper with an historical problem that illustrates the issues of viewing documents as content representation. This is the problem identified by Vincent Debaene (Debaene, 2014) in early and mid-twentieth century French field anthropology of the “two book” phenomenon, which attempted …
Documentary Practices Of Hospital Librarians In Evidence-Based Medicine: The Example Of Health Technology Assessment In Swedish Healthcare, Sara Ahlryd, Fredrik Hanell
Documentary Practices Of Hospital Librarians In Evidence-Based Medicine: The Example Of Health Technology Assessment In Swedish Healthcare, Sara Ahlryd, Fredrik Hanell
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Today’s healthcare rely on a basis of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and in modern healthcare there are demands for rational decision-making about new methods, technology and treatments. HTA (Health Technology Assessment) supports decision-making in healthcare and in this study we turn to documentary practices of hospital librarians in HTA, as well as how documentary practices shape and are shaped by the work and roles of hospital librarians. Five central documentary practices were identified as initial searching, negotiating a search strategy, the main searching, making a selection, and documenting the search process. These practices construct the work and roles of hospital librarians …

Emergence: Documents In Crisis, Wayne De Fremery
Emergence: Documents In Crisis, Wayne De Fremery
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This essay suggests the etymologies of emergence, emergency, and crisis create a useful framework for theorizing documents. Indeed, the overlapping semantic associations of the words allow for the idea that documents emerge in crisis. The semantic overlap also allows a means for theorizing how documents descend into crisis. Theorizing documents in crisis, the essay argues, usefully complements documentalist theories of documentary representation suggested by thinkers like Paul Otlet and Suzanne Briet, as well newer conceptualizations of documentality as conceived by Michael Buckland and Maurizio Ferraris and documentarity as described by Ronald Day.
Bringing Political Upheaval And Cultural Trauma Into Order: A Document-Theoretical Approach To The Social Significance Of Bibliographic Classification Systems, Joacim Hansson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper explores the ability to define bibliographic classification systems as socially significant documents in a way that goes beyond their immediate function in the information retrieval process. It does so in dialog with theory on documents and documentality, and knowledge organization theory. Two examples show how development of new classification systems address social and cultural structures in periods of rapid social and cultural change and crisis. The first example discusses the design of a classification system for Swedish public libraries in the late 1910s, and the second addresses the re-formulation of the Holocaust experience in American Jewish library classification …
Examining Arkansas' Freshman Gpas And Long-Term Outcomes, Sarah R. Morris, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Charlene A. Reid
Examining Arkansas' Freshman Gpas And Long-Term Outcomes, Sarah R. Morris, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Charlene A. Reid
Arkansas Education Reports
This study examines the Grade Point Averages (GPAs) of high school freshman in Arkansas and their relationship with later outcomes. Using de-identified student-level data from 2009-10 to 2018-19 from the Arkansas Department of Education, this research investigates trends in freshman GPAs, how these trends vary for different demographic and socioeconomic groups, and the relationship of freshman GPAs to high school graduation and college enrollment.
We follow seven cohorts of Arkansas first-time freshmen who were enrolled in twelfth grade four years later. Using regression analyses controlling only for student demographic characteristics, we find a one-point gain in freshman GPAs to be …
Recognizing The Unique Needs Of Women With Varied Pregnancy Loss Histories, Shalini Venkat
Recognizing The Unique Needs Of Women With Varied Pregnancy Loss Histories, Shalini Venkat
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Infertility is associated with psychological distress; women who experience miscarriage and recurrent miscarriage experience additional grief and trauma. Unfortunately, available psychological interventions for infertility are of limited efficacy; a new intervention is therefore needed. However, little is known about the psychotherapy preferences of women with infertility, and particularly whether miscarriage history is associated with treatment preferences. Thus, the current study evaluated the psychotherapy preferences of women with infertility as a function of miscarriage history. 410 North American women were recruited to complete an online survey assessing their quality of life, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and preferences of 14 psychotherapy techniques endorsed …

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
Inclusive churches propose to explore a path of revision and adaptation of queer faith in our Global South contexts. The way initiated is promising, and indeed the inclusive churches —together with queer theologians and their allies— are setting a course towards adapting Christianity to people's contexts instead of the traditional way of adapting contexts to Christian faith.

Theses and Dissertations
Jeremy Lawson uses bright, expressive, abstract painting in conversation with minimalist sculpture to encourage a meditation on the death of the self, the potential for it's transformation, and the struggle to maintain the tools beyond language necessary to experience the sublime.
Getting It Right! Improving Kenya’S Human Capital By Reducing Stunting—A Household Account, Timothy Abuya, Wangari Ng'ang'a
Getting It Right! Improving Kenya’S Human Capital By Reducing Stunting—A Household Account, Timothy Abuya, Wangari Ng'ang'a
Reproductive Health
In the last two decades, Kenya has attained middle-income status and established a diverse and private-sector-driven economy. On several socio-economic indicators, such as education, gender equality, and democracy, Kenya scores much higher than its peers. More than two-thirds of Kenyans are under 35 years of age, thus the country’s development hinges on the quality of its youth—their levels of education and skills, their values and attitudes, and the quality of their health and productivity. While Kenya’s investments in the development of its human capital positions the country well to sustain accelerated growth, the trajectory is threatened by high rates of …
Inequalities In Heterosexual Sex And How We Can Become Equals, Sophie Bierly
Inequalities In Heterosexual Sex And How We Can Become Equals, Sophie Bierly
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sexual inequality is well researched in the academic sphere but is absent from the political realm. Previous research has identified that sex is defined for men’s pleasure, that women suffer from an orgasm gap, and that male domination is standard in heterosexual sex. Due to the private nature of sex, sexual inequality is untouched as a personal problem rather than deconstructed as a political injustice. However, the universality of sexual inequality in heterosexual relationships demonstrates that these overlooked personal problems are rooted in widespread cultural misogyny. Sex is one of the primary ways in which we perform gendered socialization, due …

The Qualitative Report
Barrismo is a complex phenomenon and cannot be defined universally. Social representation is based on deficient conceptions that relate it to the use of psychoactive substances and violence. This article presents qualitative research evidence based on the epistemological assumptions of social constructionism, a hermeneutical phenomenological design and the use of qualitative interview and documentary and audiovisual review, to understand the political-pedagogical character of the collective actions of the popular bars of the city of Medellín, Colombia, as practices that contribute to the transformation of the territories. Categories found: i. Bars as popular movements: transition from the brave bar to the …
Working Paper No. 53, Mexico Under Neoliberalism, Daniela M. Ávila Arévalo
Working Paper No. 53, Mexico Under Neoliberalism, Daniela M. Ávila Arévalo
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that a set of policies that can be identified as ‘neoliberalism’ has generated observable effects on the economy and society of Mexico. Initiated during the last decades of the twentieth century, a combination of external and internal interests led to the implementation of neoliberal policies. The marketization of Mexico’s economy during the 1980s and 90s consolidated ‘structural adjustments.’ Through extensive privatization of what were statist assets, combined with the deregulation of trade as well as numerous aspects of private sector activity, the Mexican economy came to rely upon a low-wage labor export-model that also undermined …
Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Wealth And Health, Sicong Sun
Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Wealth And Health, Sicong Sun
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Racial wealth inequity is one of the most pressing social and economic issues in the United States, historically and contemporarily. Primarily due to unequal distribution of opportunity for economic advancement and mobility in addition to the accumulation of historic disadvantage endured by Black and Latinx Americans, U.S. racial wealth inequity leads to substantial racial health disparities. It is widely acknowledged that socioeconomic position (SEP) is a fundamental cause of disease and health disparities. Centering around three key constructs—race/ethnicity, wealth, and health—this dissertation had two overarching aims: (a) to investigate the relationship between wealth and health, delineating the effects of wealth …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The aim of this study is to assess the level of collaboration between librarians and Library and Information Science (LIS) academics for the development of the LIS curriculum, being aware that collaboration is an instructional strategy that positively affects student academic achievement. The term collaboration has become popular concept in areas of life where two or more individuals, organisations, institutions or nation embark upon a mutually agreed process. Collaboration provides the opportunity for experts and researchers to partner and fine-tune thoughts and develop strategies for multi-dimensional thinking towards achieving common and uniform practice. Collaboration between librarians and LIS academics has …
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Obstetric Racism And Postpartum Depression In Black Women, Miguel A. Claxton Iii
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Obstetric Racism And Postpartum Depression In Black Women, Miguel A. Claxton Iii
University Honors Theses
Postpartum depression is the most common postpartum mood disorder, with 13% of new mothers reporting symptoms within the first year. Adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm birth co-index with the development of postpartum depression. This correlation is particularly alarming considering that Black women have about a 60% higher rate of preterm birth and an 88% higher rate of low birth weight infants than Caucasian women. By utilizing theories of stratified reproduction, necropolitics, and obstetric racism, this paper aims to situate postpartum depression in Black women as a psychological response to systems of medicolegal control and domination. …

Concepts And Moral Values Included In Reading Books For The Upper Elementary Stage, Thaar Jabbar
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The current research aims to know the extent to which the fifth-grade reading book includes moral concepts and values, and to achieve this, the researcher followed the descriptive analysis approach, and the research tool was a questionnaire of moral concepts and values, depending on the phrase that expresses the idea, as the results showed an imbalance in the inclusion of concepts and values in the content of the reading book for the fifth grade of primary school. And the researcher put forth a number of recommendations that call for training Arabic language teachers on how to convert content from words …

General Joseph B. Wall And Lynch Law In Tampa, Robert P. Ingalls
General Joseph B. Wall And Lynch Law In Tampa, Robert P. Ingalls
Florida Historical Quarterly
On Monday morning, March 6, 1882, the news spread quickly through Tampa, a normally sleepy community of some 1,000 people. During the previous night a man had broken into the home of a prominent family living just outside town. After stealing several small items, the intruder had assaulted a young woman of the family. According to subsequent press reports, the attacker had fled before actually raping the victim, but clues to his identity, including a knife left at the scene, put Sheriff D. Isaac Craft and a posse on his trail the following morning. With Tampans gripped by feelings of …
