An Assessment And Exploration Of Recent Methodological Advances In Safety Data Analysis, Suryaprasanna Kumar Balusu
An Assessment And Exploration Of Recent Methodological Advances In Safety Data Analysis, Suryaprasanna Kumar Balusu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The injury severity and frequency of traffic crashes can be further reduced by implementing appropriate traffic safety measures. Several advanced methodologies have been developed in the recent decades to more accurately identify the factors affecting road safety. Such methodologies have helped policy makers formulate appropriate safety measures directed toward increasing seatbelt and helmet use, reducing speed limits in school zones, implementing adolescent driver programs, and so on. However, each methodological approach has its own strengths and weakness and could lead to different inferences. This dissertation assesses and explores a number of recently developed methodologies and their application to traffic safety …

The Interplay Of Experience And Social Structure: Adaptation Through Media, Steven Hicks
The Interplay Of Experience And Social Structure: Adaptation Through Media, Steven Hicks
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
In this investigation, I explore the tensions which self-referentially emerge within our constructed ‘nature’. I begin by exploring the origins of our contemporary media environment as discussed by McLuhan. I then interrogate the challenges of digital life through a close reading of the work of technology critic Giles Slade. I then conclude by situating these seemingly competing views of mediated existence within the framework of social systems theory. Through the lens of social systems theory, I reframe our contemporary technologies as adaptations to past challenges which also shape our experience of the potential choices and challenges of the future.

Throgs Neck: Anatomy Of An Urban Underground Music Scene, Lou Guarneri, Paul Ziek, David Freeman
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Among the many contributions of The Bronx, one that does not receive as much academic attention as it should is the borough’s long tradition of fostering local music scenes. Beyond being the birthplace of salsa and hip-hop, for the past 20 years, the Throgs Neck section of The Bronx has also been home to a vibrant independent, hyperlocal, underground music scene. The current paper uses case study as a strategy to understand the dynamics of this hyperlocal music scene. More specifically, the case study takes an inductive approach and tells the story of a scene that is very different from …

The Language Of Political Genres: Inaugural And State Speeches Of New York City Mayors And Us Presidents, David C. Hoffman, Tiffany Lewis, Don Waisanen
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
This study provides empirical evidence for the predictions of genre theorists concerning two genres of political speech: inaugural addresses and state addresses (state of the union and state of the city speeches). Using a combination of computer-aided textual analysis and regression analysis, we analyzed 132 speeches from US presidents and NYC mayors to see whether nine dependent variables varied according to genre. The results of our regressions indicated significant differences between the genres: inaugural addresses are more inspirational and unifying than state speeches and state speeches use more policy-related language and language concerned with the past than inaugurals. This paper …

Librarianship Is Personal: Qualitative Library Practices In The Post-Covid Era, Emily Ford
Librarianship Is Personal: Qualitative Library Practices In The Post-Covid Era, Emily Ford
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
During the COVID-19 era of remote work one thing became clear, personal and professional boundaries were muddied. Pets, partners, and children made appearances during zoom meetings, students and colleagues may have seen the inside of our houses. While this new era may have changed the boundaries between our personal and professional lives, it opens the opportunity for us to explore broader uses of phenomenology, or personal lived experiences, in library practices. How can we tap into personal experiences to inform our new and developing practices? In this session we’ll explore phenomenological research approaches that we can apply to our practices …

Maturing Out Of Victimization: Extending The Theory Of Psychosocial Maturation To Victimization, Amber L. Beckley, Michael Rocque, Catherine Tuvblad, Alex R. Piquero
All Faculty Scholarship
Adolescents are at a relatively high risk of victimization. Within criminology, victimization has been largely attributed to risky behaviors and low self-control. Yet, these factors explain only a modest amount of victimization, suggesting that other theoretical predictors may offer additional insight. One factor that may predict victimization, as well as decreasing victimization risk after adolescence, is psychosocial maturation. Using data from the longitudinal Pathways to Desistance study, this study tested the association between psychosocial maturation and victimization. The analytic sample for this study (1087 individuals; 5681 yearly observations) included participants under 18 years at study recruitment. On average, each participant …

Work Environment And The Teacher: A Qualitative Case Study Of Public Secondary Schools In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Edomgenet Hiba Issa
The Qualitative Report
This study examined the nexus between the public secondary school teacher and his/her work environment. To capture the nature and substance of this nexus, the study was mainly directed towards answering the following two research questions: Which attributes of work environment matter most to the public secondary school teacher? And why do they matter? The study was conducted on teachers in public secondary schools of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It adopted a qualitative case study design where data were collected through semi-structured interviews and then analyzed using a thematic analysis technique. The results show that basic school facilities, teacher-principal and teacher-student …
Continuity Of Offending In Young Adulthood: A Test Of Moffitt’S Snares Hypothesis, Alex O. Widdowson, J.W. Andrew Ranson, Anna M. Kyser
Continuity Of Offending In Young Adulthood: A Test Of Moffitt’S Snares Hypothesis, Alex O. Widdowson, J.W. Andrew Ranson, Anna M. Kyser
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Moffitt’s snares hypothesis posits that snares—such as addiction to drugs and alcohol, time spent incarcerated, unemployment, teenage parenthood, high school dropout, and disabling injuries—can trap individuals into persistent patterns of offending during periods in the lifecourse when desistance is normative. We test this hypothesis using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 to examine the associations and mechanisms between snare exposure and criminal offending during young adulthood. Results indicate that snare exposure was associated with increased offending and that this was in part due to snare exposure undermining a successful transition to adulthood, harming health, and producing social …

Do Russian Women Have The Right To Self-Defense Against Domestic Violence?, Davtyan Mari Davitovna
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article concerns the analysis of court practices for criminal cases relating to female victims of domestic violence who have been charged with murder or intentional infliction of grievous bodily injuries of their partners. The author directly connects the observance of women's rights in domestic violence self-defense cases with the problem of the lack of legal mechanisms of protection against violence in Russia. Russia remains the last country in the Council of Europe which has yet to create legal mechanisms to protect women against domestic violence. The lack of a law against domestic violence, a mechanism for protection orders, standards …

The Influence Of Gender Stereotypes On The Growth Of Gender Inequality And Domestic Violence In Russia In The Context Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Pisklakova-Parker Marina, Efanova Olga
Journal of International Women's Studies
The present article is concerned with the influence of gender stereotypes on gender inequality and violence against women in modern Russia as well as the response of government institutions and civil society organisations to domestic violence incidents under lockdown. Conclusions on the role of stereotypes in the growth of inequality during the COVID-19 pandemic are based on findings of the research carried out by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) and the Institute of Socio-Economic Studies of Population of the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On The Squares And In The Comments Sections: The Feminist Movement In Russia Between Contentious And Discursive Politics, Vanya Mark Solovey
Journal of International Women's Studies
Academics have overlooked feminist movements in Russia, allowing struggling women’s rights organizations to overshadow the many achievements of Russian feminists. Scholarship has reported on struggling women’s rights organizations, citing Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist protest punk rock group, as an exceptional case and concluding that the overall situation with feminism in Russia is desperate. Even though recent publications acknowledge some feminist mobilizations, they are still judged insufficient. Why is contemporary Russian feminism continuously “not enough” for outside observers? And is it “enough” for its members?
In this paper, I argue that one of the major reasons why feminists outside Russia, …

Women’S Responses To The Conservative Turn In Russia And Russian Social Policy, Ann-Mari Sätre
Journal of International Women's Studies
Russia has experienced a conservative turn in gender policy since the early 2000s, especially since 2012. There have been conservative trends in legislation and policies along with a deterioration of women’s rights in Russia. The conservative trend is also reflected more specifically in developments in social policy. The aim of this article is to highlight how women have experienced and responded to these policy changes. Both resistance and acceptance have been noted: during my field work I have observed four kinds of responses. The article further discusses how the conservative trend might contribute to a social marginalization of women.

The Tensions Between Healthcare Providers And Patient And Family Advisory Committees (Pfacs): A Comparative Health System Analysis Between England And Ontario, Umair Majid
Patient Experience Journal
There has been a proliferation of patient engagement (PE) in healthcare activities. However, the concept of “engagement” has existed for decades; the first Patient and Family Advisory Committees (PFACs) in North America were formed in the 1970s. These committees are an important mechanism for involving patients and family and have proliferated across the healthcare sector. However, it is unclear how or why PFACs became the predominant mechanism for PE. The objective of this comparative analysis is to review the historical context and legislative imperatives that have contributed to the proliferation of PFACs in Ontario, Canada and England, United Kingdom.

Perceptions Of The Healthcare System Among Stakeholders, Michael D. Markee, Christine Ascencio, Laura Brugger, Renee Jonas, Hisako Matsuo
Patient Experience Journal
The U.S. healthcare system is rife with complexities and is consistently a source of political debate. One’s interaction with the system may directly impact the understanding of the system. The objective of this research is to examine the perceptions of the United States healthcare system from the viewpoint of healthcare providers, insurers, and consumers. Using a grounded theory approach, theoretical sampling was used to explore similarities and differences between the three groups of actors in the healthcare system. Data were collected through interviews with thirty-one participants using a semi-structured interview schedule. Themes of cost, access, and inefficiency emerged from the …

Consumer Representative Experiences Of Partnership With Health Workers In Australia, Coralie R. Wales, Judith A. Lababedi, Alison Coles, Philip Lee, Emma Clarke
Patient Experience Journal
We examine the experiences of Consumer Representatives participating in consumer engagement activities across a public health service in NSW, Australia. A team of Consumer Representatives and staff members use a participatory, constructivist paradigm and a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to analyse ten interviews with Consumer Representatives over three years 2017-2019, and three focus groups in 2020. We explore these experiences and identify the linked contextual factors from their points of view. Consumer Representatives were prepared to invest their time, but they needed respect. “Respect” from a consumer perspective was being meaningfully included, supported and heard, and activities needed to be purposeful …
Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon
Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon
Articles
Emotional nurturance is a fundamental feature of all forms of professional caring. As well as delivering expert social, health, education, practical or personal services, good caregivers possess an other-centred disposition, are emotionally intelligent and relationally skilled, and morally caring. Despite this, the value, role, and status of emotional nurturance in professional care is ambivalent. Drawing on feminist care theory, Hochchild’s emotional labour theory, and Bourdieusian social reproduction theory, as well as diverse empirical studies, this paper identifies how emotion is marginalised and misrecognised and calls for the reappraisal of emotion in professional care work in ways that appreciate tensions, contradictions, …
