The Nature Of Anti-Asian American Xenophobia During The Coronavirus Pandemic: A Preliminary Exploration Into Envy As A Key Motivator Of Hate, Daisuke Akiba Nov 2021

The Nature Of Anti-Asian American Xenophobia During The Coronavirus Pandemic: A Preliminary Exploration Into Envy As A Key Motivator Of Hate, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

Background. The current Coronavirus pandemic has been linked to a dramatic increase in anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate incidents in the United States. At the time of writing, there does not appear to be any published empirical research examining the mechanisms underlying Asiaphobia during the current pandemic. Based on the stereotype content model, we investigated the idea that ambivalent attitudes toward AAPIs, marked primarily with envy, may be contributing to anti-AAPI xenophobia. Methods. Study 1 (N = 140) explored, through a survey, the link between envious stereotypes toward AAPIs and Asiaphobia. Study 2 (N = 167), …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

PM2.5 is a major component of air pollution in China and has a serious threat to public health. It is very important to quantify spatial characteristics of the health effects caused by outdoor PM2.5 exposure. This study analyzed the spatial distribution of PM2.5 concentration (45.9 μg/m3 national average in 2016) and premature mortality attributed to PM2.5 in cities at the prefectural level and above in China in 2016. Using the Global Exposure Mortality Model (GEMM), the total premature mortality in China was estimated to be 1.55 million persons, and the per capita mortality was 11.2 …

Costs And Consequences Of Traffic Fines And Fees: A Case Study Of Open Warrants In Las Vegas, Nevada, Foster Kamanga, Virginia Smercina, Barbara G. Brents, Daniel Okamura, Vincent Fuentes

Sociology Faculty Research

Traffic stops and tickets often have far-reaching consequences for poor and marginalized communities, yet resulting fines and fees increasingly fund local court systems. This paper critically explores who bears the brunt of traffic fines and fees in Nevada, historically one of the fastest growing and increasingly diverse states in the nation, and one of thirteen US states to prosecute minor traffic violations as criminal misdemeanors rather than civil infractions. Drawing on legislative histories, we find that state legislators in Nevada increased fines and fees to raise revenues. Using descriptive statistics to analyze the 2012–2020 open arrest warrants extracted from the …

Using Sociological Images To Develop The Sociological Imagination, Georgiana Bostean, Lisa A. Leitz

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

We present a two-assignment series that developed students’ sociological imaginations and that could be done in a face-to-face or online course. The series used the Sociological Images blog and students’ own visual images (e.g., photographs) to meet course learning goals: (1) link sociological theories and concepts to social events/trends, (2) apply these ideas to real life by identifying sociologically relevant images in daily life, and (3) communicate sociological analysis in academic and popular written forms. The use of a blog encourages students to embrace public sociology. We present faculty and student assessment data (pretest from nonequivalent comparisons group) from six …

“Who We Are On Paper”: Celebrating Writing Identity And Diversity With High School Seniors In A Dialogic Ela Classroom, Karen Larson Buechner Nov 2021

“Who We Are On Paper”: Celebrating Writing Identity And Diversity With High School Seniors In A Dialogic Ela Classroom, Karen Larson Buechner

Theses & Dissertations

Grounded in theory that views language and writing as inextricable from the social event within which it occurs, the purpose of this ethnographic study was to explore how the dialogue produced within the context of a detracked English Language Arts (ELA) classroom contributed to students’ perceptions of their writing identity. The class consisted of a racially, socioeconomically, and academically diverse group of 12th-grade students enrolled in a suburban, public high school. Findings illustrated that writing identity was enacted through multiple iterations of literacy processes embedded in a curriculum that was culturally responsive and implemented through dialogic methods. The analysis of …

How Transformational Leadership Can Help Native American Students, Kevin T. Caffrey

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In this paper, I examine the challenges that Native American students face in higher education and the role that education plays in their lives. I provide data on this topic spanning more than three decades through a literature review of three published articles. Through this literature review, I reveal key challenges that Native American students historically have faced and provide information on what factors play an important role in their success. Furthermore, I expose a research gap on the role that higher education administrators can play in addressing these challenges and inequities. I present strategies and recommendations on how to …

Racial Disparity In Educational Punishment, Elizabeth R. Wirtz Nov 2021

Racial Disparity In Educational Punishment, Elizabeth R. Wirtz

Modern Psychological Studies

There is a growing epidemic of children of color being disproportionately and inappropriately disciplined due to recommendations for exclusionary educational discipline practices such as suspension and expulsion. Throughout the literature, SES, level of ability, gender, and skin color were essential factors in evaluating students’ suspension risk. The most salient of these factors is race. Implicit bias towards darker-skinned students is the main factor for the discipline gap. This literature review explores the causes and rates that middle school and high school students of color are disproportionately recommended for suspension and expulsion and the consequences of racially discriminatory discipline practices. Exclusionary …

The Effect Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental Health And Cognitive Functioning, David C. Steinberger, Deanna M. Barch Nov 2021

The Effect Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental Health And Cognitive Functioning, David C. Steinberger, Deanna M. Barch

Modern Psychological Studies

Research has revealed links between perceived discrimination (PD), mental health, and cognition. The present study sought to understand the moderational role of PD in the relation of mental health to cognition. Our sample consisted of 11,878 9–12-year-olds across 21 study sites. We conducted linear mixed effects models to analyze child internalizing/externalizing problem behaviors, cognitive ability, and PD. Higher PD related to worse internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Further, worse cognitive abilities generally related to worse internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Moreover, PD moderated the relation of internalizing/externalizing to cognition. Future longitudinal research should seek to establish the temporality of the relationships addressed …

Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio Nov 2021

Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio

Modern Psychological Studies

The American Dream has functioned as an idealized view of success in the United States since its conception in the 1930s. As generations pass, questions of plausibility and definition surround the American Dream. Over the course of 20 semi-structured interviews composed of open-ended questions, participants were asked how they defined the American Dream and how plausible they felt achieving the American Dream was for them. The participants were then compared across age differences. Across participants, six clear themes were most often associated with the American Dream: hard work, freedom, social mobility, material gain, family connection, and individuality. Older participants had …

Ray, For Complete List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The hydrologic sciences and water resources management have long depended on a combination of in situ measurements and remotely sensed data for research and regulatory purposes. In situ measurements are constrained in their spatial distribution by both logistics and costs. Satellite- and manned aircraft-based remote sensing provide spatially broad data, but often of a coarse resolution. Furthermore, all these data collection methods are often limited in their ability to respond to specific short-term events when the data and imagery could inform real-time assessment and decision-making, especially during and immediately after natural disasters. Researchers and regulators are increasingly using unmanned aerial …

Plus 50 Students And Their Experiences With Technology In Undergraduate Classes, Jamillah L. Boyd, Nykea T. Watts-Edwards Nov 2021

Plus 50 Students And Their Experiences With Technology In Undergraduate Classes, Jamillah L. Boyd, Nykea T. Watts-Edwards

Dissertations

As adult learners over 50 continue to pursue higher education, postsecondary institutions should have resources and services available to support this demographic. Previous research often combines Plus 50 students with all nontraditional students 24 years and older, making it difficult to understand the unique needs and learning experiences of older adult students in the academic environment. The use of technology for curriculum has increased significantly over the years and may present challenges for Plus 50 learners as they are introduced to it and learn to navigate it. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Plus 50 …

Firm Characteristics And Environmental Disclosure In An Extractive Industry In Tanzania, Ponsian Prot Ntui, Siasa Mzenzi, Henry Chalu

Business Management Review

This study investigates the influence of firm characteristics on environmental disclosure in an extractive industry in Tanzania. The study applies legitimacy theory as the foundation for theoretical perspective. The study uses the panel data of 18 firms from 2004 to 2018 as reported in Tanzania Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (TEITI). Data was extracted from annual reports, and a Random Effects General Least Square (GLS) regression analysis model was used for analysis. The results show that firm age, firm size, capital structure, and firm and ownership structure are significant factors that positively influence environmental disclosure. The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger Nov 2021

The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger

Student Theses and Dissertations

The history of emotion has given a bit of attention to the role that fear plays as a historical motive. Yet, what fear is or how it may be used when examining primary sources which possess fictitious tales has sorely been neglected. In order to address this, this thesis argues that historians need to employ philosophical concepts of horror in order to truly grasp the unique qualities that emerge from these tales. This thesis provides a historical framework for these philosophical understandings of horror by examining the medieval and early modern mentalities which served as a framework for the formalization …

Relationship Between Grit, Academic Mindset, First-Year Gpa, And Perceptions Related To Persistence For Non-Traditional College Students, Melissa Moss Young

Theses and Dissertations

Retention of non-traditional college students has been a significant concern for postsecondary institutions, students, their families, and society. This study sought to explore the relationships between grit, academic mindset, first-year GPA, and the perceptions of students related to persistence. Braxton and associates’ Revised Theory of Student Departure in Commuter College and Universities served as the theoretical framework for this study. This study was exploratory, sequential mixed method design, incorporating survey data from 2015 as well as qualitative interview data from 2020 and 2021. Results indicated a negative, moderate relationship between grit scores and mindset scores, a weak, negative relationship between …

Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb Mcnichol Nov 2021

Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb Mcnichol

Student Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has determined that exposure to parental incarceration increases the chances of children having behavior problems. Using data from the Fragile Families and Childhood Wellbeing Study, the identification of parental incarceration and how it impacts fragile families will be explored. This study focuses on how parental incarceration affects an adolescent’s social, emotional, and behavioral development and how that leads to behavioral problems and delinquency. Further, the current study will examine if involvement in extracurricular activities moderates the relationship between parental incarceration and behavior problems. Identifying how exposure to parental incarceration affects adolescents could help identify new and additional ways …
