A Case Study Of Introverted Leadership In A Suburban High School In Central Texas, Jill Reynolds Hotz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introverted leaders are instrumental in building relationships and teams, setting benchmarks and pursuing academic goals, and planning and strategizing the implementation of performance initiatives. This qualitative case study illustrated how Organizational Leadership has been previously isolated to extraverts and clarifies the need for introverted leadership. The purpose of this study was to explore ways in which high school leaders identify themselves as introverts and demonstrate the strengths of introverted leadership within the parameters of their professional roles. This study followed three introverted administrators at a suburban Texas secondary campus. Participants were observed in their professional settings: in meetings, correspondence, duty …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

The literature posits that HIV knowledge is associated with precautious sexual behaviour and practice. We hypothesised and investigated the association between knowledge of HIV transmission and adolescent pregnancy in Ghana, given that the relationship between HIV knowledge and adolescent pregnancy has not been extensively studied.

Methods

We did analyses on 5836 cases (weighted as 5121) of 15–24 years old reproductive age women in the female dataset of the 2017 Multiple Cluster Indicator Survey. Adolescent pregnancy was operationalized as reproductive age women between 15-24 years who became pregnant before the age of 18 years. Accurate HIV knowledge was measured by …

The digital era, marked by digital devices connected via high speed data networks, has altered human experience in profound ways over the past 40 years. The potential for novel forms of human relating and fulfillment of desire has led to myriad changes in behavior, thought and unconscious activity. Using intersectionality, Critical Race Theory and Quare theory as theoretical frameworks, this dissertation employs hierarchical logistic regression and data from New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Community Health Survey (CHS) to examine the relative association of key variables and domains -- demographics, sexual characteristics, risk factors and engagement in medical care variables -- on recent HIV testing for a sample of 3997 men. Further, this study explores these effects separately for White, Black, Latino and Asian men.

Investigating Experiences Of The Family Connections Programme For Supporters Of Individuals With A Diagnosis Of Borderline Personality Disorder, N Fisher, P Keohane, B Whalley Feb 2021

Investigating Experiences Of The Family Connections Programme For Supporters Of Individuals With A Diagnosis Of Borderline Personality Disorder, N Fisher, P Keohane, B Whalley

School of Psychology

We interviewed relatives and carers following their participation in a novel Family Connection (FC) programme, designed for supporters of individuals with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. A mixed methods approach was utilised to quantitatively measure depression, ‘burden’, grief and mastery, pre and post-group, whilst qualitative analysis identified four themes: ‘Positive Experience’, ‘Not Alone’, ‘Management of Emotions and Behaviours’ and ‘Recommendations’. Quantitative measures suggest that FC could be helpful in alleviating depression and ‘burden’ and increasing mastery, although it could increase the experience of grief. Implications for future research and the possible impact of FC amongst this group are discussed.

Connections Between Rape Myth Acceptance And Favorite Musical Artist Among College Students, Sahar Elmenini, Pam Mcauslan, Marie Waung

Medical Student Research Symposium

The focus of this study is to examine the relationship between the characteristics of a person’s favorite musical artist and their level of rape myth acceptance (RMA). I asked 115 undergraduates from the subject pool to rate the most frequently mentioned musical artists from the study done by Miller, McAuslan, and Leonard (under review). The participants rated the artists on factors related to sexuality, aggressiveness, narcissism and whether they see these artists as a “role model.” This data is then incorporated with the data from approximately 337 emerging adults from Miller, McAuslan, and Lenoard’s (under review) study who have taken …

Mental Health Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Parents In High-Risk, Low Income Communities, Dana Alonzo, Marciana Popescu, Pinar Zubaroglu Ioannides

Covid-19 Digital Research

COVID-19 has spread across the globe, resulting in significant changes in virtually every aspect of life. Mitigation efforts, like shelter-in-place orders, have taken a particular toll on parents who have had to navigate disruptions in work and/or school schedules. Research from high-income countries demonstrates increased parental anxiety, stress, depression, and burnout resulting from the pandemic. It is unclear if these outcomes are the same for parents in high-risk communities in low-income countries where pre-pandemic conditions were deleterious. This study addresses this gap and examines the mental health impact of the pandemic on parents in high-risk communities in Guatemala.

Challenging The Patriarchal Barriers: The Role Of Women Activists And Their Advocacy For Domestic Violence In Semarang City, Central Java, Alya Meuthia Zahwa

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Domestic violence is the most common form of violence experienced by women in Indonesia. It has become a social issue for women activists to seek a solution. However, many women activists have to face challenges, both structural challenges, and cultural challenges, as experienced by women activists at the Legal Resources Center-Gender Justice and Human Rights (LRC-KJHAM) in Semarang City. This article argues that challenges at the structural and cultural levels ultimately become obstacles for women activists from the LRC-KJHAM in fighting for rights and justice for women victims of violence, as well as creating a climate of gender equality in …

A Systematic Review Protocol To Identify The Key Benefits And Efficacy Of Nature-Based Learning In Outdoor Educational Settings, J Mann, T Gray, S Truong, P Sahlberg, Et Al

Plymouth Institute of Education

Outdoor Learning in natural environments is a burgeoning approach in the educational sector. However, the evidence-base of research has not kept pace with teacher perceptions and increased practitioner usage. Anecdotal evidence and formal research suggest the significant health and wellbeing benefits of nature connection. Offering low-cost, non-invasive pedagogical solutions to public health challenges—particularly around mental health, wellbeing, physical literacy, and increasing physical activity–the pedagogical benefits of Outdoor Learning are yet to be fully enunciated. The proposed systematic review will search for studies across eight academic databases which measure the academic and socio-emotional benefits of Outdoor Learning, with a focus on …

Trauma And Intersectionality In Trauma Informed Ministry, Caitlin Simpson Jan 2021

Trauma And Intersectionality In Trauma Informed Ministry, Caitlin Simpson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Seminary students have reported feeling underprepared to work with traumatized individuals in pastoral care (Logan, 2017; Resane, 2014). Statistics reported that 82% of pastoral care recipients had a trauma history (Foreman, 2018). Understanding trauma (Herman, 1992) and intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989) were used to consider the varying impacts each can have on an individual. Scholar Fredericks Streets (2015) used the social services understanding of theology and trauma (Beh, 2012; Weems, 1988) trauma informed ministry (Wolf, et al., 2013) to develop trauma informed ministry. This qualitative study using constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2013) explored the experiences of nine participants in learning about …

Gender Role As A Mediating Factor In Gender Pay Equity Analysis, Jillian Ann Girard

Dissertations and Theses

The gender wage gap has been persistent despite the introduction of new laws designed to address the disparity. One of the challenges in addressing this inequity is the lack of complete understanding of the driving factors of the pay gap. One yet unexplored factor is the impact of the gender role, which is a social role based on sex/gender which provides a structure and expectations for social relationships. The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between gender role, biological sex, and base pay. A matched, cross-sectional sample drawn from large U.S. cities was utilized to test the …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Hurricane Harvey (HH) devastated Houston, Texas in August 2017. During October and November 2017, English speaking caregivers of hospitalized pediatric patients were surveyed on sociodemographic characteristics and how they were impacted by HH. One hundred caregivers were surveyed with 27% ‘severely impacted’ by HH. Approximately 75% of those severely impacted had a reported annual income ≤$50,000. Subjects in this lower income group were more likely to report increased worry about food for the household following HH and someone in the family losing their job due to HH. Those expressing that they were severely impacted by HH were more likely to …

Union Commitment And Participation, Tara Myers, Megan Paul Jan 2021

Union Commitment And Participation, Tara Myers, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What are union commitment and participation?

Union commitment refers to the extent to which employees are dedicated to their union (Cooper-Hakim & Viswesvaran, 2005; Gordon, Philpot, Burt, Thompson, & Spiller, 1980). Union participation is active involvement in the union such as attending meetings, serving on committees, holding office, campaigning, voting, assisting with contracts and negotiations, managing union funds, and filing grievances (Anderson, 1979). Many researchers consider union participation as part of union commitment (e.g., Gordon et al., 1980). Others have speculated that union participation is a consequence of union commitment (e.g., Parks, Gallagher, & Fullagar, 1995). Additional ways to conceptualize …
