Participants will be prepared to mobilize school staff, parents, and community members to address the critical issues of depression awareness and suicide prevention.
Accidents
Appalachia
Reports of rescues and accidents in the winter of 2020. Ho-hum weather yielded to the emergency of COVID-19, which put rescue groups at risk. In late March, the U.S. Forest Service closed the Cutler River drainage and the Mount Washington Avalanche Center suspended avalanche forecasting.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) has in recent years become widely recognized among schools, after-school programs, and other care facilities as an important aspect of programming. However, do we as educators know how to practically implement SEL and other interpersonal education into curriculums in a way that makes sense for our resources and populations? In this presentation, we will discuss how we implemented SEL skills and practices into our afterschool program with respect to our students who come from hard places.

John Coleman describes his childhood in downtown Boston, MA in the 1930s and 1940s, and how he returned to complete college and a Master’s degree after serving in Korea. When he graduated, Patton State Hospital was recruiting so he moved from Boston to Redlands, CA with his family. He describes the warm welcome he received from his white colleagues in Redlands and the locations of Black residents and social life in the 1950s. He describes the difficulty he found trying to find housing because of housing segregation and details his experiences with real estate agents and observations of block busting. …
Understanding The Traumatized Brain, Sam Marion, Elizabeth Marston
Understanding The Traumatized Brain, Sam Marion, Elizabeth Marston
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
Students who have experienced trauma are often in need of behavioral intervention due to challenging behaviors and reactivity. Understanding the body’s threat response system gives insight into these behaviors and allows for empathy within the interventions. This presentation will outline basic neuroscience theories, propose interventions focused on self-regulation, and demonstrate how adding basic elements to existing interventions can increase efficacy.

American Perspectives On Suicidality Among Men In Poland, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk, Kathleen J. Farkas
American Perspectives On Suicidality Among Men In Poland, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk, Kathleen J. Farkas
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines sociological, psychological, and suicidological research on the determinants of male suicide to explore the fact that Polish men complete suicide 7.4 times more than women, a frequency twice as high as in the US. This paper is based upon an examination of relevant literature and statistical databases. A keyword search was completed in both Polish and English language databases. Ideals of masculinity and negative social attitudes towards a non-binary view of gender may increase stressors and discourage men in Poland from revealing their problems while seeking support, explaining the high rates of suicide completion among Polish men. …
Effectiveness Of A Social Work Informed Casework Training Curriculum For Paraprofessionals In Non-Profit Social Service Agencies, Mindy L. Mccormick
Effectiveness Of A Social Work Informed Casework Training Curriculum For Paraprofessionals In Non-Profit Social Service Agencies, Mindy L. Mccormick
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
This work presents a comprehensive study of the effectiveness of a social work informed casework training curriculum specifically developed for use with paraprofessionals, those without a four-year degree, working in a social service agency. Many studies have been written outlining the benefits of paraprofessional support in social service agencies, but little exists in how to properly train and support those paraprofessionals in their job roles. This study was designed to evaluate a new training curriculum to be utilized in meeting that need within the field. Multiple inferential analyses were conducted using pre-/post-test scores of 143 participants working in a national …

As technology advances, new opportunities for partners to gain power and control in their romantic relationships are readily available. New cyber-based behaviors have slowly garnered scholarly attention, but measurement-related issues have not. We take the logical next steps to (1) develop and validate a comprehensive measure of intimate partner cyber abuse (IPCA) for adults using classical test theory and item response theory and (2) estimate IPCA prevalence rate for a range of relationship types. A sample of 1,500 adults, currently in an intimate partner relationship, 18 years or older, and living in the United States, completed an online questionnaire about …

The Family-Directed Structural Assessment Tool: An Approach To Assisting Families Impacted By Covid-19, Tara Mclendon
Journal of Family Strengths
The COVID-19 pandemic jeopardizes many levels of society. The family unit, a foundation of societal structure and function, is particularly vulnerable to the unpredictability of this current crisis. The Family-Directed Structural Assessment Tool (FDSAT) offers a means by which service providers and families can reinforce structure within and around the family unit. This potentially offers a level of predictability and sense of safety during an extraordinarily challenging time. A brief history of the FDSAT is addressed, followed by an overview of tenets specific to the assessment tool. An in-depth case study is provided. This example demonstrates the use of FDSAT …

Given the negative environmental impacts of intensive agriculture, there is an urgent need to reduce the impact of food production on biodiversity. Ecological restoration of farmland could potentially contribute to this goal. While the positive impacts of ecological restoration on biodiversity are well established, less evidence is available regarding impacts on economic development and employment. Potentially, prospects for economic development could be enhanced by ecological restoration though increased provision of ecosystem services, on which some economic activity depends. Here we examined this issue through the development of contrasting land use scenarios for the county of Dorset, southern England. Two scenarios …

Meditation refers to a family of self-regulation practices that focuses on training attention and awareness to foster psycho-emotional well-being and to develop specific capacities such as calmness, clarity, and concentration. We report a prospective convenience-controlled study in which we analyzed the effect of two components of Preksha Dhyāna – buzzing bee sound meditation (Mahapran dhvani) and color meditation (leśyā dhyāna) on healthy college students. Mahapran and leśya dhyāna are two Preksha Dhyāna practices that are based on sound and green color, respectively. The study population represents a suitable target as college students experience different stress factors during the school year. …

Objective
This study examines the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), internalized and externalized psychological distress, and six measures of parenting behavior among fathers in the United States.
Background
Prior research on ACEs and parenting has focused almost exclusively on mothers, specific types of childhood adversity, and the intergenerational transmission of abuse, neglect, and other traumatic experiences. This study extends the literature by considering ACEs in fathers, using a multidimensional measure of ACEs, and multiple measures of positive and negative fathering behavior.
Method
Using the ecological model of father involvement, this study is based on a national sample of more …

The convergence of the health, racial, and economic crises resulting from COVID-19 has exposed long-standing inequities among New York State’s Black communities. The recent, brutal and senseless killings of Black men and women (e.g., George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, among an exceedingly long list of names) have ignited growing national public protests and increasing agreement about the existence of deep-seated racial injustice within systems and institutions and how it has been compounded over time. Taken together, the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic of senseless killings of Black people are providing a magnified reflection of the nation’s historic …

BACKGROUND: Sexting is an increasingly common phenomenon among adolescents and young adults. Some studies have investigated the role of personality traits in different sexting behaviors within mainstream personality taxonomies like Big Five and HEXACO. However, very few studies have investigated the role of maladaptive personality factors in sexting. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between Dark Triad Personality Traits and experimental (i.e., sharing own sexts), risky (i.e., sexting under substance use and with strangers), and aggravated sexting (i.e., non-consensual sexting and sexting under pressure) across 11 countries.
METHODS: An online survey was completed by 6093 participants (Mage = 20.35; …
