Mistreatment Of Wild Animals In Captivity, Madison Coleman May 2021

Mistreatment Of Wild Animals In Captivity, Madison Coleman

Ballard Brief

Wild animals kept in zoos, aquariums, marine parks and theme parks, and other types of captive establishments endure severe mistreatment. both due to the inherently stressful nature of captivity as well as certain conditions within these facilities that exacerbate the mistreatment. The general views that society holds of animals, the ability for humans to profit from captive animals. inadequate monitoring of animal treatment, and inadequate worker training are all causes of this animal mistreatment. When animals suffer this mistreatment, they endure severe psychological harm (evidenced by chronic stress. stereotypic behavior. hyper-aggressive behavior, and maternal neglect) and physical harm (such as …

114 Years And Counting – An Updated History Of The University Of South Dakota Sanford School Of Medicine, H Bruce Vogt, William J. Dendinger, Evelyn Schlenker, Janet C. Linderman

Administration

If those who founded the USD Sanford School of Medicine in 1907 were to drop in on the school today, what would they find most surprising? Would the time travelers marvel at the modern teaching facilities, our amazing ability to cure previously deadly diseases, or would they be puzzled by the complexities of medical practice in the modern era of technology and regulation? The first century of the medical school’s existence brought immense change as the school evolved. As advances in medical science and medical practice accelerated, the school kept pace. The first century resulted in a well-established medical school …

Island Paradise To Urban Streets: Identifying The Effects Of Military Forced Displacements On Indigenous Islanders, Alexandria Mckinnell May 2021

Island Paradise To Urban Streets: Identifying The Effects Of Military Forced Displacements On Indigenous Islanders, Alexandria Mckinnell

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

During the twentieth century, indigenous islanders across the world were forcibly removed from their native lands by Western powers for militarily advantageous reasons. The Bikinians’ removal is the most notorious case of military forced displacement, but many other island communities faced the same fate during the superpower struggles of World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. This study analyzes two documented cases of military expulsions of indigenous islanders, the Bikinians and the Chagossians. I created a matrix analyzing the common cultural experiences shared by both communities as a result of their expulsions and how those effects persist …

The Human Services Workforce Crisis: Moving Forward With Intention In Massachusetts, Suzanne Gray Henderson May 2021

The Human Services Workforce Crisis: Moving Forward With Intention In Massachusetts, Suzanne Gray Henderson

School of Professional Studies

The human services field is growing rapidly in Massachusetts as it is across the country, and the Commonwealth does not have enough qualified staff to fill vacancies. The workforce shortage has risen to crisis levels due to high turnover, insufficient training, low wages, and a lack of recognition and appreciation for direct support professionals. The individuals receiving services in Massachusetts deserve quality and stability. The state budget – strained by inefficient service models and reactive fixes – also demands systemic change. The human services workforce crisis impacts a variety of stakeholders. Individuals served are directly affected, as are the direct …

Advertising In The Volunteer Tourism Industry: Analyzing The Relationship Between Social Exclusion And Self-Versus-Other Benefit Appeals., Lyndsay Swanston

Honors Projects in Marketing

This study aims to analyze how consumers perceive advertisements in the volunteer tourism industry when influenced by social exclusion and benefit appeals. The authors examined feelings, attitudes, and behavioral intentions of consumers in reference to an international volunteer trip advertisement. Based on data from a sample (n=259), findings demonstrated that consumers who felt more socially excluded responded more favorably to other-benefit appeals, opposed to self-benefit appeals. An interaction effect was discovered when looking at the degree of sympathy that participants felt regarding the advertisements. Participants who were socially excluded felt more sympathetic after viewing the other-benefit appeal advertisements, whereas those …

Pernet Family Health Service, Inc.: Organizational Restructuring & Change Management Best Practices, Carly Massino May 2021

Pernet Family Health Service, Inc.: Organizational Restructuring & Change Management Best Practices, Carly Massino

School of Professional Studies

Research exhibits that between 70-75% of change initiatives fail and a major contributor to this trend is employee resistance. Although change can bring exciting growth and innovation, it can cause employees heightened stress and worsened physical and mental health outcomes. These effects are often amplified when organizations enact multiple change initiatives at once. These worsened outcomes are often a result of feelings of distress, anxiety, powerlessness, and apprehension and unknowns such as how one’s position will be affected, how operations will change, or how one fits into the change. This topic is incredibly relevant for Pernet Family Health Service, Inc., …

A New, Validated Assessment Tool Demonstrates Positive Outcomes In Home Visiting Model For Families Affected By Maternal Substance Use, Danielle Chiang, Oneta Templeton, Emily Siedlik

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2021

The Team for Infants Exposed to Substance abuse (TIES) Program is a longstanding home-based family support program in the Social Work Department that provides a multi-disciplinary, community-based model to address the complex needs of families with young children affected by maternal substance use. TIES developers have created and psychometrically validated a comprehensive tool, the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) goal attainment scale, to assess outcomes in key domains: reduction in maternal substance use, positive parenting, child and maternal health, and income and housing stability.

A virtually interactive poster was presented at the National Research Center for Early Childhood (NRCEC) in …

Birth Experiences In Kentucky: An Ethnography Of Healthcare, Trauma, And Healing, Breanna Bowling May 2021

Birth Experiences In Kentucky: An Ethnography Of Healthcare, Trauma, And Healing, Breanna Bowling

Honors Theses

A traumatic birth experience can occur for a multitude of reasons. For example, it may stem from a communication issue, lack of consent to procedures, or a birth plan gone wrong, or it may even be due to the inherently hierarchical structure of western medicine. Whatever the cause, traumatic birth narratives serve not only as therapeutic mechanisms for the sufferer, but also as a means to use the lessons learned from the lived experiences of people to improve care in the future. Composed of information specific to Kentucky, this research examines the causes of traumatic births and gives voice to …

Professional Quality Of Life Indicators And Turnover Intention In Forensic Nurses, Leigh Anne Meyer May 2021

Professional Quality Of Life Indicators And Turnover Intention In Forensic Nurses, Leigh Anne Meyer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background/Significance: Significant barriers to forensic nurse workforce development exist, affecting patient access to care. Retention of forensic nurses is a persistent problem. Turn-over of forensic nurses can be attributed to many factors related to professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS).

Methods: A convenience sample of forensic nurse program coordinators was used to identify the effect of an educational session on professional quality of life and strategies for reducing stressors within the role on ProQOL-5 and TIS-6 scores using a pre- post-test quasi-experimental survey design. Correlation between professional quality of life indicators …

Communication In Adult Children Of Alcoholics: The Problem, The Result, And The Solution, Audrey Barth May 2021

Communication In Adult Children Of Alcoholics: The Problem, The Result, And The Solution, Audrey Barth

Communication & Media Studies | Senior Theses

In the United States alone, 25% of children live with an alcoholic parent (Haverfield et al., 2016). While there is extensive research on the psychological impacts of growing up with an alcoholic parent, research focused on communication is slim. This paper seeks to examine the communication characteristics in adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) in three ways: (1) to determine how communication dynamics in alcoholic families are detrimental, (2) to determine the implications of these dynamics in adulthood, and (3) to determine how communication can be implemented as a solution for ACOAs. Several interviews were conducted on ACOAs based on those …

Workforce Analyses Using Combined Human Resources And Child Welfare Data, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development May 2021

Workforce Analyses Using Combined Human Resources And Child Welfare Data, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Workforce Analytics Resources

When conducting workforce analyses, it can be valuable to capitalize on data from both human resources (HR) databases and child welfare (CW) information systems. Each can be useful on their own, but additional information can be learned when the two types of data are connected. There are two primary uses of combined HR and CW data:

  1. CW data can serve as objective measures of employee job performance, which is one of the most important workforce outcomes to measure, particularly when examining the effectiveness of various workforce decisions and practices.
  2. CW data can provide useful contextual information for studying workforce outcomes. …

Workforce Metrics, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Workforce Analytics Resources

Calculating and tracking workforce metrics is a valuable way to assess workforce needs and examine workforcerelated processes, interventions, and outcomes. This resource includes over 90 metrics related to recruitment and selection, education, work hours, work arrangements, caseload capacity, supervision, career development, performance, turnover and tenure, and costs. Note that these metrics are not universal, and many other variations exist elsewhere. These have been selected or developed based on their applicability to the child welfare workforce.

Creating A Workforce Analytics Team (Video), Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Workforce Analytics Resources

When conducting workforce analytics, it can be helpful to adopt a team approach and involve various experts and stakeholders, each of which can make a valuable contribution.

The Big Picture

  • Ensure that you have the commitment and buy-in from leaders who control the agency’s budget and policies.
  • Team membership may vary depending on the analytics goals and the stage of the work, but potential participants include representatives from agency leadership, Human Resources (HR), child welfare, Information Technology (IT), and training.
  • It’s likely that no one person is going to possess all the skills needed; building a strengths-based, interdisciplinary team can …

'Training' The Body Politic: Essays On The School Reform Orthodoxy, Jahan Naghshineh May 2021

'Training' The Body Politic: Essays On The School Reform Orthodoxy, Jahan Naghshineh

Education (PhD) Dissertations

These essays represent my attempt to grapple with fundamental questions about what I see as the upside-down nature of educational reforms in American society. Why is there a never-ending crisis in America’s public schools? What does it mean when the educational specter from different periods of history is discredited and yet the specter keeps being recycled decade after decade? For example, elites propagated crisis narratives to galvanize support for the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation at the turn of the century. Countless researchers then documented the adverse impacts of NCLB on America’s schools and yet that literature never led …

A Trip Through The Divine Comedy: An Allegory For Depression And Its Role In Bibliotherapy, Matthew Curry May 2021

A Trip Through The Divine Comedy: An Allegory For Depression And Its Role In Bibliotherapy, Matthew Curry

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Dante the Pilgrim, the main character of Dante Alighieri’s La Divina Commedia, has his journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven recorded by Dante the Poet in poetic form. In the literal sense of things, readers follow Dante the Pilgrim’s journey downward into the infernal hellscape, upward onto a mountain of purgation and atonement, and into the metaphysical world of the divine. Allegorically, however, readers can also choose to view Dante the Pilgrim’s journey through The Divine Comedy as that of a person experiencing the hopelessness of depression, the challenging climb upward and outward of healing after spiraling deeply inward …

Psychological Wellbeing And Sense Of Community Among African Americans: Does Purpose In Life Matter?, Yatesha D. Robinson May 2021

Psychological Wellbeing And Sense Of Community Among African Americans: Does Purpose In Life Matter?, Yatesha D. Robinson

Dissertations

This dissertation examined the relationships between sense of community, purpose in life, and psychological wellbeing among African Americans. It investigated whether purpose in life moderated the relationship between sense of community and psychological wellbeing. Although previous studies have linked a sense of community and purpose in life with wellbeing, few studies have examined these relationships among African Americans using a multidimensional model. The data for the current analysis were drawn from the third wave of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States study (MIDUS 3), collected between 2013–2014. The sample included 98 African American men (n …

Future Time Perspective And Participation In Group Activities In Assisted Living Communities Using Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, Rebecca Stewart May 2021

Future Time Perspective And Participation In Group Activities In Assisted Living Communities Using Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, Rebecca Stewart

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

In assisted living communities (ALCs), participation in group activities is promoted and encouraged due to the knowledge we have thus far on the benefits of social engagement. Socioemotional selectivity theory, a popular social engagement theory, suggests that how long a person feels they have left to live (also known as their future time perspective) determines how they utilize their remaining time. Using this theory, it is presumed that an assisted living resident with a low future time perspective will participate in fewer group activities offered within the ALC. After controlling for participants without cognitive impairments, a quantitative secondary data analysis …

Describing The Relationship Between County-Level Rates Of Nursing Personnel And Rate Of Inpatient Days In Different Community Contexts, Lydia Seagraves May 2021

Describing The Relationship Between County-Level Rates Of Nursing Personnel And Rate Of Inpatient Days In Different Community Contexts, Lydia Seagraves

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Rural communities are challenged due to fewer healthcare resources compared to urban communities. There are limited studies addressing how the availability of nurses may influence inpatient days depending on the community context. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of county-level nursing personnel and inpatient days in rural and urban counties. This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data about 45 Texas counties from the Area Health Resources File. In rural and urban counties there was a strong positive correlation between inpatient days and Registered Nurses. In urban counties there was a strong positive correlation between Advanced …

The Lived Experience Of Women With Head & Neck Cancer And The Impact On Close Relationships., Georgia Anderson May 2021

The Lived Experience Of Women With Head & Neck Cancer And The Impact On Close Relationships., Georgia Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is emotionally and physically burdensome to people who are diagnosed with this disease. In the United States, nearly 30% of people diagnosed with HNC are women. Studies about depression and anxiety in this population have been conducted for decades; however, there are no studies that specifically examine the psychosocial implications of this disease from the perspective of women. Method: Women diagnosed with HNC were recruited from two academic medical centers in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana tri-state area to explore the lived experience of women with HNC and how this disease impacts their close relationships. Semi-structured interviews …

Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire May 2021

Data-Driven Recommendation Of Academic Options Based On Personality Traits, Aashish Ghimire

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The choice of academic major and, subsequently, an academic institution has a massive effect on a person’s career. It not only determines their career path but their earning potential, professional happiness, etc. [1] About 40% of people who are admitted to a college do not graduate within six years. Yet, very limited resources are available for students to help make those decisions, and each guidance counselor is responsible for roughly 400 to 900 students across the United States. A tool to help these decisions would benefit students, parents, and guidance counselors.

Various research studies have shown that personality traits affect …

Examining The Implications Of Tabletop Roleplaying Games For Use In Leadership Development: An Integrative Review, Samantha Funk Ma May 2021

Examining The Implications Of Tabletop Roleplaying Games For Use In Leadership Development: An Integrative Review, Samantha Funk Ma

All Student Scholarship

Role-playing games are frequently used within the social sciences to study several aspects of the human experience and development. Existing research suggests that role-playing games encourage the development of critical and strategic decision-making, teamwork, and creative thinking, all behaviors integral to the development of lasting leadership competencies. This integrative review theorizes using TRPG roleplay games as unconventional tools for skill development and examines the implications for leadership applications. This inductive approach revealed a comprehensive picture of the importance of TRPGs integration into leadership development programs. It is at the intersection between creativity and leadership where organizational leaders have the potential …

Socializing Vacancy: An Architectural Thesis, Greg Winawer May 2021

Socializing Vacancy: An Architectural Thesis, Greg Winawer

Architecture Senior Theses

A large portion of office space has been left vacant, and thus provides no beneficial program to its remaining occupants or the local urbanity it is surrounded by. When considering what can be done with this vacant space, the primary motivation should be to integrate a program which does the opposite: a program which positively disrupts its existing context to hybridize and improve the current outdated programmatic arrangement. To insert a residential program into an existing office tower both disrupts and enhances the rigorous flows of our working and our domestic lives. The predefined universal concept of the ‘working-day’ is …
