Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with adverse postoperative outcomes, but few studies have examined OSA in a purely spine surgery population. This study investigates the association of the STOP-Bang questionnaire, a screening tool for undiagnosed OSA, with adverse events following discectomy for far lateral disc herniation (FLDH). Methods: All adult patients (n = 144) who underwent FLDH surgery at a single, multihospital, academic medical center (2013-2020) were retrospectively enrolled. Univariate logistic regression was performed to evaluate the relationship between risk of OSA (low- or high-risk) according to STOP-Bang score and postsurgical outcomes, including …

Culturally Appropriate Health Education: Translation Of A Parturient Pain Relief Options Pamphlet Into French And Spanish, Francis Minor, Austin Cook

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The rise of immigration worldwide introduces a diverse, multicultural population of patients seeking healthcare in the United States. Barriers to communication, both spoken language and culturally associated communication norms, limit immigrant women’s ability to seek, gain access, and follow through with perinatal care. In order to provide safe, effective, and culturally sensitive care, recognition of language and cultural differences of all individuals must be considered when providing patients with educational materials (Perera et al., 2012; Plumbaum et al., 2014). The aim of this project was to translate an existing pain relief options pamphlet into French and Spanish in order to …

Participants & setting
We used advertisements and word-of-mouth to recruit 342 parents living in Central Ohio during the initial stay-at-home order for COVID-19.
Methods
We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (gEMA) to measure parental stress and punitive parenting during three …

Care Of The Healthcare Provider, Kari Hullinger, Emily Moscardelli May 2021

Care Of The Healthcare Provider, Kari Hullinger, Emily Moscardelli

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Evidence has shown a strong correlation between a healthy provider and the positive care that the provider can promote to others. Many evidence-based health promotion programs have been implemented throughout many health systems. These programs have shown improvement of the providers’ overall health. And in return, these providers are able to better care for their patients. Detailed reports have shown many health consequences that healthcare providers have acquired due to long hours, intense training, lack of time, lack of sleep, and the concept of always putting their patients first. A health system in Springfield, Illinois was examined to determine if …

The Impact Of A Cultural Competence Assessment Tool On Teaching Strategies In The Dnp Curriculum At Southern Illinois University Of Edwardsville, Katarina Dobrosavljevic May 2021

The Impact Of A Cultural Competence Assessment Tool On Teaching Strategies In The Dnp Curriculum At Southern Illinois University Of Edwardsville, Katarina Dobrosavljevic

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Providing culturally competent and culturally congruent care to patients leads to better outcomes and reduction of poor outcomes due to health disparities. Providing care that is not culturally congruent can contribute to communication barriers, resulting in deficient diagnostic testing, miscommunication about etiologies, treatment plans that are not individualized, and discounting of patient's ideas. Individuals from diverse cultures face health disparities which contribute to inadequate care and poor outcomes. The purpose of this project was to survey former graduates of the Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (SIUE) family nurse practitioner (FNP) program to assess their level of cultural competence and areas …

Implementing Inclusive Education In Early Childhood Settings: The Interplay And Impact Of Exclusion, Teacher Qualities And Professional Development In Ghana, Francis R. Ackah-Jnr, Hyacinth Udah

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Inclusive education (IE) in the early years enhances young children’s learning, socialization, and development; yet, children with disability are one group that is often isolated, excluded, or marginalized in early childhood education. This paper examines jointly the perceived exclusion practices, teacher qualities, and professional development and the interplay and impact of these factors on effective inclusive early childhood education. Drawing on data collected from individual interviews with teachers and headteachers in a large early childhood and school setting in Ghana, findings of this qualitative study indicate the exclusion practices of teachers. The findings suggest that resistance to IE limits learning, …

Canine-Assisted Therapy: Incorporating Canines Into The Therapeutic Experience, Melissa H. Kee

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Canine-Assisted Therapy (CAT) is a therapeutic practice that has been growing in popularity in recent years but unfortunately has little research to show evidence of effectiveness. This article focuses specifically on the use of canines in therapeutic environments. Use of canines in a therapy setting may be a source of confusion due to the many assistance role that canines can provide, including hearing dogs, mobility assistance dogs, and service dogs. This article provides clarity regarding CAT and includes recommendations for counselors considering the use of dogs in their therapeutic practice.

The Emotional Wellbeing Of Doctoral Students Conducting Qualitative Research With Vulnerable Populations, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott May 2021

The Emotional Wellbeing Of Doctoral Students Conducting Qualitative Research With Vulnerable Populations, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative studies have the potential to evoke emotional distress among participants, particularly where sensitive issues are explored. Consequently, novice qualitative researchers become well versed in strategies to minimise risk to participants. But what happens to the novice researcher when they are confronted with the emotional account of a participant? While research practices consistently serve to protect the wellbeing of participants, concern for researcher wellbeing is often overlooked. This study explored doctoral students’ experiences of undertaking qualitative research projects with vulnerable populations, and the ways in which this influenced their emotional wellbeing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six doctoral candidates attending …

Does Duration Matter?: Assessing The Role Of Duration In Adverse Childhood Experiences, Miranda Thompson May 2021

Does Duration Matter?: Assessing The Role Of Duration In Adverse Childhood Experiences, Miranda Thompson

Honors Theses

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with several negative physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood (Felitti et al., 1998). However, a criticism of the ACEs measure is that it does not account for the duration of these events (McLennan et al., 2020). Thus, I aim to replicate previous ACE findings and determine whether an ACEs measure accounting for duration is a better predictor of mental health outcomes. Methods: 244 adult participants reported on their ACEs with duration and their mental and physical health. Three ACE scales were formulated: the traditional ACEs scale, and two duration-based scales, ACEs Years …
