Exploring The Service Utilization Of Formerly Incarcerated Persons With Substance Use Disorders, Sara Beeler-Stinn
Exploring The Service Utilization Of Formerly Incarcerated Persons With Substance Use Disorders, Sara Beeler-Stinn
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
We are in a new era of mass reentry from years of mass incarceration (Chamberlain & Wallace, 2016) that will is complicated by challenging conditions at release (Mallik-Kane & Visher, 2008). Recent data suggests that rearrest rates within nine years of release are over 80% among individuals released from prison (Alper et al., 2018). These challenges are further complicated by drug and alcohol abuse with over 20 million individuals aged 12 and older reporting living with a substance use disorder (SAMSHA, 2019). Incarcerated and formerly incarcerated populations are estimated to have rates of substance use disorders (SUDs) often 10 to …

Finding Peace: Aging, Solidarity, And Min-Iren, Aaron Hames
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an ethnography of elderly life in Japan. Aging populations present serious challenges to societies in the provision of care and support for the elderly. As household sizes shrink and kin disperses, networks of support and informal care premised on familial involvement may no longer suffice. States encounter budgetary strains as the proportion of workers to elderly skews toward the latter. In Japan, these problems are present and have been exacerbated by shortages of professional care workers and long-term facilities for the elderly. However, the elderly have proved strategic and adaptive in relation to population aging in other …

Exploring Accessible & Responsive Trauma-Informed Schools: A Regenerative Approach To Student & Educator Support, Kennidy Stood
Capstone Collection
Young people are particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of stress and trauma. This research explores educator perspectives of school-based trauma-informed care programs in order to understand how programs can become more accessible and culturally responsive. While there are several widely used guidelines for school-based trauma-informed care programs that seek to mitigate trauma and its effects in the classroom, there is not a universally accepted standard. As such, programs vary across settings. This study employed a mixed-methods strategy to survey and interview educators and care providers regarding factors that may limit or enhance the availability of, access to, and appropriateness …

Identifying Factors For Voluntary Return Migration: A Case Study Of Uzbek American Returnees, Khojiakbar Gayratbekov
Master's Theses
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, many Uzbek immigrants found their ways to the United States. Given the unique historic context to their cultural and national identity, Uzbeks experience distinctive integration and adaptation process when they arrive in the United States. Despite political instability and a weak economy in Uzbekistan, data from the United States Department of Homeland Security reveal that many Uzbek immigrants are leaving the U.S. for their home country. Thus, this study investigates factors for return migration among Uzbek immigrants for the period of 2010 to 2020. This study utilizes a mixture of qualitative and quantitative …

Feelings Forward: A Trauma Group For Adolescents, Lindsay Thronson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Within the United States, research has shown that roughly 14% to 43% of children and teens go through at least one traumatic event and of those children 3% to 15% develop PTSD (VA.gov: Veterans Affairs, 2018). The current research has indicated that children who have endured a traumatic event can suffer from lifelong determinantal effects such as emotional, physical, and psychological issues. With these statistics in mind, this group manual has been created for adolescents who are presenting with PTSD symptomology. Among the literature regarding the detrimental impact that trauma has on adolescents development, there will be a focus …
Increasing Engagement In Youth In A Juvenile Detention Facility: Teaching Science For Social Justice, Kelley Larson
Increasing Engagement In Youth In A Juvenile Detention Facility: Teaching Science For Social Justice, Kelley Larson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Science is a subject that lends itself well to an inquiry-based approach to teaching instead of memorizing facts and ideas. However, there are still teachers who are not utilizing student-centered methods that allow students to practice science as they learn the concepts. While many students can still pass their courses, unique populations of underrepresented students struggle to engage with the material as it is presented. In this study, the researcher utilized a social justice approach to teaching science to her classes in a juvenile detention facility to measure their engagement levels. She did this by allowing the students to engage …

Faculty Publications
Objective: Deficits in cognitive empathy are well-documented in individuals with schizophrenia and are related to reduced community functioning. The temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is closely linked to cognitive empathy. We compared the relationship between baseline cognitive empathy and changes in TPJ thickness over 24 months between individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Methods: Individuals with schizophrenia (n = 29) and healthy controls (n = 26) completed a cognitive empathy task and underwent structural neuroimaging at baseline and approximately 24 months later. Symmetrized percent change scores were calculated for right and left TPJ, as well as whole-brain volume, and compared between groups. …

Volunteering outside of one’s country and culture is a challenging endeavor. While abroad, international volunteers generally encounter a new language, culture, and lifestyle which can create challenges for volunteers. Pre-departure training can buffer and lend nuance to the difficulties that volunteers face. In Costa Rica, the organization Aliarse manages a volunteer project that experiences high volunteer attrition and incorporates minimal pre-departure training. This case study draws on quantitative and qualitative data collected from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews of former Aliarse volunteers over two months. Social Support Among Family Caregivers Who Attend Hospice Virtual Group Counseling Sessions: Facilitators And Barriers To Attending These Sessions, Katherine M. Hertzfeld
Dissertations
The National Hospice and Palliative Care organization has identified that a majority of its estimated 1.43 million patients in 2016 were cared for by family members. Studies show that these family caregivers often suffer poor health outcomes if they do not receive enough social support during the grieving process following their family members' death. Attending group counseling sessions can provide social support if the family caregiver is willing to attend. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) indicates changes in health behavior and can facilitate individuals to attend group counseling sessions. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to identify the level …

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
The prevalence of stress is increasing in colleges, where students are experiencing anxiety at an alarming rate, with anxiety being the topic most discussed in university counseling centers. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine the effect of mindfulness exercises on college students’ perceived stress. The Stetler Model guided the project development and implementation. The literature search revealed that best practice included mindfulness exercises through a combination of face-to-face instruction and remote online audio meditation for a duration of eight weeks. For this project, 56 undergraduate students (health care-leadership, health-science, and nursing majors) enrolled in a health …

Introduction: The female veteran population is expected to increase over the next few decades, representing approximately 16.3% of the living population by the year 2042. As women are discharged from the military, they are frequently challenged with the tasks of reintegrating into society and adjusting to life. While some women successfully readjust, many continue to struggle with combat-related challenges and reintegration stressors such as mental health, military sexual assault, substance abuse, interpersonal relationship issues, and everyday necessities. The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to identify factors associated with and predictive of postdeployment distress and (b) to identify …

The Rural Educator
Too often research on Black boys emanate from deficit orientations and take a problem centered approach which overemphasizes stereotypes or pathologizes Black male students, overlooking their aspirations and successes. Utilizing the High School Longitudinal Survey of 2009 (HSLS: 09), we examine the postsecondary goals of Black male ninth graders as well as the relationships among their educational aspirations, college knowledge, and supportive school personnel using Community Cultural Wealth as the conceptual framework. We found that the educational aspirations of Black male ninth graders are high; however, their knowledge of college falls short of their educational aspirations and their relationships with …

Who Do We Think We Are? A Qualitative Exploration Of Social Work Identity, Michael W. Hassler
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
Since the inception of the profession, social workers have struggled to identify a common understanding of social work, its fundamental activity, and the role of the worker. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study explored the following questions: 1) What is the participant’s lived experience of social work identity? and 2) How is this understanding of identity similar to or different from that of other helping professionals who perform similar activities? Semi-structured interviews, conducted with 22 social workers in the field, diverse in education, practice area, and experience, highlighted parallels among the various experiences, and advanced the exploration of the …
