Child Protection Policies And Practices In Mennonite Church Usa Congregations: A Follow-Up Study, Jeanette Harder, Elisabeth Wilder

Social Work Faculty Publications

While congregations have a spiritual mandate to be open and welcoming, they must be aware of the risks involved in ministry and be prepared to protect children from all types of abuse and neglect. In 2010 and again in 2018, Dove’s Nest, a nonprofit organization, conducted an online survey to determine the characteristics, practices, and experiences of Mennonite Church USA congregations with and without written child protection policies. The research questions for this study were: (1) What are the characteristics, practices, and experiences of congregations in regard to child protection, and how have they changed since 2010? Lgbtq Notion Evaluation: A Bibliometric Analysis And Systematic Review, Poonam Gautam, Dr. Ajay Solkhe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Several conservative sectors and employers are embracing equality objectives, including financial institutions, for example, more importantly, there has been a change in attitude and support towards the LGBT+ issues, which has been noticed in other professions and companies, including law and accountancy. The LGBT group includes Lesbians, Gay, Bisexuals and Transgender sexual orientation. Gay men and heterosexuals have also been observed to be in these groups. If we talk only about sexual orientation, we should avoid using the label “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender” More than one of these labels can recognise and identify a person. The organization should review …

Institutional And Supervisory Support For The Thesis By Publication, Shannon Mason, Julia E. Morris, Margaret K. Merga Jun 2021

Institutional And Supervisory Support For The Thesis By Publication, Shannon Mason, Julia E. Morris, Margaret K. Merga

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Thesis by Publication is garnering increasing interest across nations and disciplines. However, more needs to be learned about institutional and supervisory support for this thesis mode to ensure that doctoral candidates pursuing this approach enjoy the best possible outcomes. This paper draws on data from 246 recent successful doctoral candidates who took part in the 2018–2019 PhD candidates’ motivations, experiences, and opinions of the thesis by/with publications study. Findings suggest that perceived institutional support may be more common than supervisory support, and initial institutional support may be eclipsed by ongoing support. Findings suggest that more can be done to …

‘Making A Home’: An Occupational Perspective On Sustaining Tenancies Following Homelessness, Leonie Boland, Richard Yarwood, Katrina Bannigan

School of Health Professions

Tenancy sustainment is fundamental to a sustainable exit from homelessness. Although growing attention has been placed on housing outcomes, there is limited research on the maintenance of a settled home following homelessness. The aim of this study was to understand the process for individuals as they transitioned from services to sustained tenancies from an occupational science perspective. A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted with people who had experienced multiple exclusion homelessness. Interviews using reflexive photography were carried out with individuals (N = 29) from three cities in the UK and Ireland. ‘Making a home’ was the core process identified …

Muslims draw specific coping strategies from their adherence to the Holy Qur’an and other Islamic teachings and practices. This research proposal aims to explore and describe the unique coping strategies that individuals develops and use throughout the Muslim refugee experience.

Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Foundations, Expansion, And Assessment, David C. Yamada

University of Miami Law Review

Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Foundations, Expansion, and Assessment Founded in 1987 by law professors David Wexler and the late Bruce Winick, therapeutic jurisprudence (“TJ”) is a multidisciplinary school of legal theory and practice that examines the therapeutic and anti-therapeutic properties of law, policy, and legal institutions. In legal events and transactions, TJ inherently favors outcomes that advance human dignity and psychological well-being. Starting with original groundings in mental health and mental disability law, criminal law, and problem-solving courts, and with a geographic focus on the United States, TJ now embraces many aspects of law and policy and presents a strong international orientation. …

Fostering Information Literacy: A Call For Collaboration Between Academic Librarians And Msw Instructors., Sarah C. Johnson, Margaret Bausman, Sarah Ward

Publications and Research

Genuine collaboration between academic librarians and social work faculty in which information literacy is embedded in social work education is lacking. Drawing from the results of the authors’ 2016 quantitative study surveying academic social work librarians across the United States, this qualitative follow-up uses data from 27 semi-structured interviews concerning the prevalence and nature of information literacy instruction (ILI) in social work education, how ILI is introduced and sustained in social work curricula, and the alignment between ILI efforts with institutional goals, guidelines from accreditation authorities, and professional social work practice standards. The literature review engages the reader in a …

More Than One Way: How Migrants Are Able To Achieve Belonging Beyond Their Legal Status, Claudia Soto Jun 2021

More Than One Way: How Migrants Are Able To Achieve Belonging Beyond Their Legal Status, Claudia Soto

Theses and Dissertations

Is legal status a master status for migrant belonging? If not, how do other factors--such as social networks, religious participation, language and cultural familiarity--shape belonging? Over the past few years, some migration scholars have suggested that legal status is a "master status"which determines migrant outcomes (Gonzales 2015). Other literature suggests that migrant outcomes are determined by a variety of factors, asserting that migrant experiences can be better understood by studying the interaction between these factors (Enriquez 2017; Valdez and Golash-Boza 2020). Utilizing 73 semi-structured interviews with migrants in Utah, I compare the experiences of refugees, permanent migrants, temporary migrants, and …

Preventing Child Maltreatment Through Medical-Legal Partnership, Debra Chopp Jun 2021

Preventing Child Maltreatment Through Medical-Legal Partnership, Debra Chopp

Book Chapters

There has been significant attention in recent years to health care delivery models that address social determinants of health. One such model is medical-legal partnership (MLP). MLPs join health care providers with lawyers to address health-harming legal needs in the lives of vulnerable patients. Research on MLPs has demonstrated their success in reducing stress and increasing health and well-being in the patients they serve and in their families. This chapter explores the possibility of using MLP as a tool to prevent child maltreatment.

Lgbtqia+ Care Simulation: Examining Participating Students’ Attitude And Comfort, Grezelro Gonzalez

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Background: The LGBTQIA+ communities face healthcare disparities that contribute to reduced overall health. One factor affecting LGBTQIA+ communities’ reduced overall health is poor health-promoting behaviors or avoidance of care due to healthcare providers’ lack of knowledge, poor attitude, and low comfort levels with LGBTQIA+ care. There are limited studies to date that address nursing students’ attitude and comfort with LGBTQIA+ affirming care interventions outside of lectures. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a simulation intervention on the attitude and comfort of prelicensure nursing students towards providing care to members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Sample: …

An Indigenous Youth Storywork methodology was applied to bring meaning to relationships I have with diverse Indigenous Old Ones, mentors and Knowledge Keepers and their influence on my journey as a Maya adoptee returning to my culture. My personal story was developed and analyzed using an Indigenous decolonial framework and Indigenous Arts-based methods. The intention of this Youth Storywork research …
