Collaboration As Locus For Information Literacy Teacher Knowledge Development, Juval V. Racelis, Daniel Neal, Margaret Bean
Collaboration As Locus For Information Literacy Teacher Knowledge Development, Juval V. Racelis, Daniel Neal, Margaret Bean
Collaborative Librarianship
Research on collaboration in information literacy curriculum has yielded insights into the opportunities and challenges surrounding efforts to establish sustainable teaching models. Few studies, however, have examined the ways in which these teaching partnerships enrich the knowledge base of instruction librarians and faculty. This paper examines the pedagogical knowledge development of two instructional librarians and one composition instructor in the collaborative teaching of information literacy skills in a composition course. The three instructors share ethnographic accounts recounting the iterative process of developing curriculum to meet the needs of their first-year students. The curricular innovations, including online modules, multiple instruction sessions, …

Seventh Edition Of Apa Style: A Foundation For Advocacy In Counseling, K. Elizabeth Mcdonald, Amber Cook
Seventh Edition Of Apa Style: A Foundation For Advocacy In Counseling, K. Elizabeth Mcdonald, Amber Cook
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselors-in-training are asked to write in a professional voice using APA style but rarely make the connection between the writing style and therapeutic or advocacy work. While the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Publication Manual presents didactic rules on form and style, it is not intended to provide professional context for the purpose of the adoption of the style. This manuscript draws parallels between the seventh edition of APA’s writing style and the four domains outlined in the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (Ratts et al., 2015) and concludes with a concise writing resource.

Training Needs Of Counseling Trainees In Corrections: A Survey Of Clinical Directors, Frank Dicataldo, Brett Dejesus, Don Whitworth
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
As the mental health treatment needs of adults and adolescents within the criminal justice system has garnered increasing attention, the training of mental health professionals has increasingly focused on serving individuals in forensic and correctional settings. We surveyed 55 clinical directors of mental health programs in forensic and correctional settings in a New England state. Respondents reported that Clinical Mental Health Counselors (CMHCs) broadly participated in assessment, treatment and supervision within these programs. Counseling experience emerged as the most important knowledge/experience domain for prospective job applicants and CMHCs were rated as providing a large share of the treatment within these …

Virniecia Green-Jordan (February 19, 2021), Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation
Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings
Cathy Gudis interviewed Virniecia Green-Jordan, a woman with a rich history in the Perris area. Green-Jordan began the interview with a discussion of her history in activism as well as her family history. After going over her time in the Watts Riot, Green-Jordan talked about her educational background and being in a middle-class Black family. When asked about the pockets of success within the local African American population, the interviewee mentioned several families who owned homes or had businesses. She also spoke about her time in grade school where she had been a good student and how she failed to …

Substance Use As A Second Class Disability: A Survey Of The Ada's Disarmament Of Individuals In Recovery, Ryan Schmitz
Substance Use As A Second Class Disability: A Survey Of The Ada's Disarmament Of Individuals In Recovery, Ryan Schmitz
Maine Law Review
The Americans with Disabilities Act and Fair Housing Act are landmark statutes that afford essential protections to individuals with disabilities in the foundational areas of everyday life. Despite their recognition of substance use disorders as disabilities, these statutes deny protection to individuals who are either in active use or in the early stages of their recovery. This Article explores the dangers posed by the “current use exception” and surveys the case law to determine the extent of the harms done to individuals with disabilities who seek to vindicate the rights purportedly guaranteed to them by the Americans with Disabilities Act …

Research suggests youth with disabilities are less likely to experience positive outcomes compared to peers without disabilities. Identification of in-school predictors of postschool success can provide teachers (e.g., special education, general education, career technical education), administrators, district-level personnel, and vocational rehabilitation counselors with information to design, evaluate, and improve transition programs. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to examine secondary transition correlational literature to identify additional evidence to support existing predictors and identify new predictors of postschool success. Results provided additional evidence for 14 existing predictors and identified three new predictors. Limitations and implications for research, policy, and …

Transition education should be grounded in quality research. To do so, educators need information on which practices are effective for teaching students with disabilities transition-related skills. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to identify evidence-based and research-based practices in secondary special education and transition for students with disabilities. This systematic review resulted in the identification of nine secondary transition evidence-based practices and 22 research-based practices across more than 45 different transition-related skills. The range of effects for each of the secondary transition evidence-based and research-based practices identified are also included. Limitations and implications for future research, policy, and …

Multicultural Competence In Vocational Rehabilitation: The Role Of Multicultural Awareness Among Black Vrcs, Regina Walden Alston
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Over the past 30 years In the United States, multiculturalism has expanded due to a larger number of diverse populations. In this qualitative research project, the researcher explored the multicultural awareness development of Black vocational rehabilitation counselors (VRCs). The participants consisted of six Black VRCs. The data were analyzed using phenomenological theory methodology. In vocational rehabilitation, counselors are not considered competent unless they comprehend multicultural counseling competence, have the proper educational backgrounds, and are achieving successful employment outcomes with culturally diverse clients. Research shows that the component of multicultural awareness development is considered the promising, yet essential contributor to overall …

Objectives: Women affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a higher risk of endometriosis, an estrogen-dependent, chronic inflammatory disease. Though acupuncture has long been a safe and effective therapy for treating inflammatory conditions, it is unclear whether it could prevent the onset of endometriosis. This study aims to determine the effect of acupuncture on the subsequent risk of endometriosis in female RA patients.
Methods: Between 1998 and 2010, female subjects with RA were recruited from a nationwide database (5,736 patients; age ≥20 years). Enrolled patients included 2,407 acupuncture users and 2,407 nonusers randomly selected using propensity scores. The occurrence of endometriosis …

Objective: Subjects with insomnia have a higher risk of depression, thus possibly making them live with serious health conditions. To date, information regarding the effect of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs), a commonly used complementary and alternative medicine, on depression risk among people with insomnia is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of CHMs on the risk of depression among individuals with insomnia.
Methods: This cohort study used a national health insurance database to identify 68,573 subjects newly diagnosed with insomnia, aged 20–70 years, who received treatment between 1998 and 2010. Using propensity score matching, we …

Social Participation In College Students With Chronic Pain, Karen Mccarthy, Megan Chamberlain, Megan Chinn, Jennifer Pineda, Camille Santiago, Jamie Spitzer, Patricia Tran
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: College students with invisible disabilities, including chronic pain, often experience difficulty engaging in social occupations, both on and off campus, because of stigma, misconceptions, or social exclusion. Previous research has examined the use of academic accommodations to address these concerns or focused on the physical barriers to participation, failing to address the psychosocial and holistic impact of pain. Chronic pain can affect a variety of occupations, including social participation, which is a significant occupation for college students. This research explores the lived experience of chronic pain for college students and the impact of pain on social participation from …

Counselors-In-Training Reactions To Clients Living With And Without Hiv, Melissa Zeligman, J. Richelle Joe
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
An estimated one million people are currently living with HIV in the United States. Therefore, an important question remains pertaining to professional helpers’ preparedness in working with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study (N = 165) utilized an analogue design, with participants receiving one of four possible clinical case vignettes, to determine the relationship of client HIV status and race with counselor-in-training self-efficacy, multicultural competency, and empathy. Results revealed that client HIV status was predictive of counselor self-efficacy, and that self-efficacy held relationships with multicultural counseling competency and empathy. Findings suggest multicultural skills training may be particularly important to …
