Searching For Structure In Shattered Minds: A Factor Analytic Examination Of Measures Of Schizotypy, Jennifer Erin Keane

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thisdissertation examines the utility of a new measure of schizotypy, the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS) to assess for the construct using the current conceptual model of schizotypy as attenuated schizophrenia using confirmatory factor analysis. Additionally, thisdissertation utilizes exploratory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of two commonly used measures of schizotypy, the SPQ and CPPS, and the MSS. Self-report questionnaires are often used to measure schizotypy given its latent nature. However, continued debate related to the factor structure of schizotypy has led to a lack of consistency in the way in which schizotypy is defined and measured by researchers …

Games Of What If? A Test Of Remote Associations, Stephen J. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Guilford’s (1968) discovery of the difference between convergent and divergent thinking abilities was an important milestone in the understanding of human intelligence. There are several types of divergent thinking abilities, one of which is the ability to make remote associations. For instance, the Consequences test (Guilford & Guilford, 1980) asks questions such as, “What would happen if people no longer needed to sleep?” Respondents would give some immediate or obvious implications and some implications that were more remote, e.g., consequences of a consequence. From the perspective of producing creative technological advances, a professional would need to make remote associations in …

Analysis On The Negative Emotional, Physiological, And Cognitive Responses Elicited From Of The Activation Of A Stall Alarm, Travis J. Whittemore, Sabrina Woods

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Failing to identify an aerodynamic stall can lead to the inability of an aircraft to sustain flight. To warn pilots of an impending or fully-developed stall, many aircraft have safety devices installed to provide visual, aural, and/or kinesthetic (haptic) indicators of the potentially unsafe situation. The stick shaker is one such warning device. Amygdala hijack is the disruptive emotional, physiological, and cognitive response that occurs as a result of stimulus. Colloquially known as a fight-or-flight trigger, amygdala hijack can cause a person to freeze-in-place or can disrupt cognitive function to the point where the person can no longer process available …

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

The Connections Project (Pristawa,2014) is designed to assist school personnel in identifying students at-risk for social-emotional concerns by examining students’ perceptions of connectedness with adults and peers in school. Currently used in several states, schools complete the screening measure as part of their use of the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. While many measures of connectedness are lengthy and designed for elementary grade children, the Connections measure is an efficient, straightforward assessment employed with middle school and high school aged youth and school personnel. The purpose of the current study was to examine student connectedness with adults (including advisory …

Perfectionism As A Mechanism Explaining The Relationship Between Attachment To God And Worry, Katie Niehus

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bowlbys (1982) theory of attachment has been shown over the years to be an effective conceptual framework through which to study various aspects of personality and psychosocial outcomes (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Mikulincer & Shaver, 2007). Attachment theory has since been expanded to include God or a higher power as sufficient attachment figures (Granqvist & Kirkpatrick, 2013) and three attachment styles, secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment to God, have been utilized in studies examining associations between attachment to God and psychosocial outcomes (Rowatt & Kirkpatrick, 2001; Wei et al., 2006). Though studies have found that insecure attachment to God is …

An Examination Of The Individual Mediating And Moderating Variables Involved In The Relationship Between The Dark Triad Of Personality And Emotional Manipulation, Pradeep A. Thamboo

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Dark Triad of personality, which consists of three distinct, yet interrelated personality constructs—Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy has garnered considerable interest from both scholars and the general public. All three traits share a callous and antagonistic core that engenders various forms of manipulation and exploitation. Previous research has linked all three Dark Triad traits to emotional manipulation, which pertains to the malicious use of emotional skills for self-serving reasons. However, the mechanisms that give rise to emotional manipulation among dark personalities are not fully understood. The present study sought to examine the potential mediating variables involved in the relationship between …

Should Private Prisons In The U.S. Be Abolished, Nancy Anzalone Jan 2021

Should Private Prisons In The U.S. Be Abolished, Nancy Anzalone

Theses & Dissertations

Private prisons were established as a possible solution to alleviate the serious overcrowding issue affecting prisons during the 1980’s. This thesis supports the reasoning behind why private prisons should be abolished as they did not deliver on the claims made in support of their existence but rather, reveals the multitude of negative repercussions when the financial interests of a few large and powerful private corporations override the basic safety and security of our prison system. The studies contained in this thesis attempt to reveal that the data meant to support private prisons is not only inadequate, but often, inaccurately depicted …

The Effects Of Race, Sociopolitical Attitudes, And Geographic Location On Criminal Scripts, To'meisha S. Edwards Jan 2021

The Effects Of Race, Sociopolitical Attitudes, And Geographic Location On Criminal Scripts, To'meisha S. Edwards

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Recent social unrest has highlighted differences in how crime is perceived based upon the race of the perpetrator. Decades of research suggests criminality is more easily associated with racial and ethnic minorities leading to the racialization of crime. Mutz (1994) noted there are personal factors as well as impersonal factors influencing views regarding race and crime. Research suggests the strongest impersonal influence on society’s perception is the media (Gilliam et al., 2002; Umair, 2016). Therefore, the narrative of linking race and crime, which is prevalent in news media, is reinforced every time viewers tune in to their local news. Additionally, …

Working Memory Capacity Among College Students: The Role Of Gender And Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Lydia R. Bickham

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Among college students, 81.8% report experiencing at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, and approximately one third report experiencing Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) (Overstreet, Berenz, Kendler, Dick, & Amstadter, 2017). Individuals who experience PTSS may have impaired cognitive functioning when processing trauma-relevant material (Blanchette, Rutembesa, Habimana, & Caparos, 2018). An example of this is working memory capacity (WMC), which can be disrupted by affective distractors (Vytal, Cornwell, & Letkiewicz, 2013). In addition to impaired daily functioning (American Psychiatric Association (APA), 2013) those with lower cognitive performance also respond less effectively to clinical treatment options for PTSS (Wild & Gur, …
