Behaviour Change Practices In Exercise Referral Schemes: Developing Realist Programme Theory Of Implementation, John Downey, Katie Shearn, Nicola Brown, Ross Wadey, Jeff Breckon
School of Nursing and Midwifery
BackgroundExercise Referral Schemes have been delivered worldwide in developed countries to augment physical activity levels in sedentary patients with a range of health issues, despite their utility being questioned. Understanding the implementation mechanisms of behaviour change practices is important to avoid inappropriate decommissioning and support future service planning. The aim of this study was to develop initial theories to understand what influences the behaviour change practices of Exercise Referral practitioners within the United Kingdom.MethodsAn eight-month focused ethnography was undertaken, to carry out the first phase of a realist evaluation, which included participant observation, interviews, document analysis, and reflexive journaling. A …

To The Bitter End: Affect, Experience And Chemical Ecology, H Drayson
To The Bitter End: Affect, Experience And Chemical Ecology, H Drayson
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This article explores taste in its chemical, gustemological and affective senses, asking what we speak of when we talk about “bitter experience.” Drawing lines of connection between human affect and chemical ecology, it suggests a way of thinking about taste as a chemical entanglement of affective qualities and ecological relations. Two observations underpin the argument. First, the ambiguous resonance of bitter-tasting compounds in human culture is grounded in their ambiguous medical meaning, the same drug may serve as poison or cure. Second, plants interact with many other life-forms by producing chemical compounds, many of which are bitter tasting, that have …

Any engineering approach to cybersecurity must recognize that many breaches are the result of human behavior, rather than sophisticated malware. Effective cybersecurity defenses require a systematic engineering approach that recognizes the organizational, cultural and psychological barriers to effectively dealing with this problem. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines “phishing” as, “the use of fraudulent emails and copy-cat websites to trick you into revealing valuable personal information—such as account numbers for banking, securities, mortgage, or credit accounts, your social security numbers, and the login IDs and passwords you use when accessing online financial service providers.” Once this information is …

Blind Accessibility In College And University: Is Online Learning Accessible To All?, Erica R. Hagman
Blind Accessibility In College And University: Is Online Learning Accessible To All?, Erica R. Hagman
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Increasing technological advancement, coupled with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting social distancing orders, has amplified the push for online learning and hybrid courses like never before. As education moves online, are the necessary adjustments to accommodate students with varying levels of ability being made? One would think that online learning would be easier to navigate for Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) students, but is that truly the case? In this study I investigated if the Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, is accessible to BVI students. I hypothesized that BVI students would have more difficulty accessing classroom material …

Publications
During the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, subreddits on Reddit, such as r/Coronavirus saw a rapid growth in user's requests for help (support seekers - SSs) including individuals with varying professions and experiences with diverse perspectives on care (support providers - SPs). Currently, knowledgeable human moderators match an SS with a user with relevant experience, i.e, an SP on these subreddits. This unscalable process defers timely care. We present a medical knowledge-infused approach to efficient matching of SS and SPs validated by experts for the users affected by anxiety and depression, in the context of with COVID-19. After matching, each SP to …

Adoption Of Internal Social Media For Employee Engagement And Its Influences On Employee Performance An Examination Of Airline Employees In The Uk And Nigeria, Uju Perpetual Ugochukwu
Plymouth Business School Theses
The digital age has fundamentally changed employees’ and organizations’ notions of convenience, speed, information sharing, and employee interactions, which has given organizations a whole new way to engage employees and build employee relationships. Effective communication among employees within an organization enhances two-way productivity. Hence, organizations are increasingly using internal social media platforms to communicate and engage employees through the application of internal social media technology. Some of these mediums of communication are Facebook, Workplace by Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yammer, and Google+, to name but a few. This is more evident in the airline industry, whose large, dispersed workforce, that …

Collaborative Learning Of International Undergraduate English Language Learners In Small-Group Writing Communities, Yiting Chu
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This article reports a study on how international English language learner (ELL) students participated in a collaborative learning community comprised of peers and peer tutors in a writing center in a U.S. university. Drawing on the theory of community of practice (CoP), qualitative data were collected from weekly observations of three groups and in-depth interviews with four ELL students and six tutors. Findings suggested that these three groups functioned differently as CoPs with varied levels of participation and social interaction among the students and between students and tutors. A mismatch between the goals and roles of the students and those …

Searching For Structure In Shattered Minds: A Factor Analytic Examination Of Measures Of Schizotypy, Jennifer Erin Keane
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thisdissertation examines the utility of a new measure of schizotypy, the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS) to assess for the construct using the current conceptual model of schizotypy as attenuated schizophrenia using confirmatory factor analysis. Additionally, thisdissertation utilizes exploratory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of two commonly used measures of schizotypy, the SPQ and CPPS, and the MSS. Self-report questionnaires are often used to measure schizotypy given its latent nature. However, continued debate related to the factor structure of schizotypy has led to a lack of consistency in the way in which schizotypy is defined and measured by researchers …

Due to the relative poverty and scarcity of adequate resources in Jamaica, the burden of caring for a child with special needs may be challenging. Attitudes toward persons with disabilities are negative in Jamaica. Although several laws are designed to protect children with disabilities, there …

This study explored the music therapist’s lived experience of flow during a worldwide pandemic, within an improvisational music therapy approach. There is little to no literature about the concept of flow and how it relates to the music therapist’s lived experience, and none of which includes a worldwide traumatic event. Through a phenomenological investigation, the lived experiences of two music therapists who align with the improvisational music therapy approach were studied. A thematic analysis was conducted on data sources such as qualitative interview transcriptions and audio/video recordings of the interview. The following individual themes emerged from participant one: (a) flow …
