The Rebels' Credibility Dilemma: A New Approach To The Search For Credibility Towards The International Community And The Population, Theò Bajon Nov 2021

The Rebels' Credibility Dilemma: A New Approach To The Search For Credibility Towards The International Community And The Population, Theò Bajon

Peace and Conflict Studies

By being part into the theory of the rebels' credibility dilemma, this research takes its framework in a historical analysis of relations between rebel groups and governments, in order to better understand the mechanisms of demands and negotiations between these two actors. In this paper, we propose to test the validity of the theory of the rebels' credibility dilemma in Latin America, and to provide specific precision to this geographical area. For that, our approach proposes an historical and political study on data going from 1945 to 2019. The study is characterized by the creation of specific classifications and a …

This article reviews the empirical data the second author collected from 120 semi-structured interviews with the leaders of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and funding agency development officers conducted during the summer of 2010 in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties. The research explores 44 Derry City respondents' experiences and perceptions regarding external economic aid in the Northern Ireland peace process. To this end, this article explores the role of economic aid from the International Fund for Ireland (IFI) and the European Union (EU) Peace and Reconciliation or Peace 3 Fund in engaging with civil society in transforming psychological and cultural …

Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero Nov 2021

Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero

Peace and Conflict Studies

Over 150,000 people were intentionally killed in Mexico since 2006, after the Mexican government decided to openly combat organized crime. Against the backdrop of the security crisis, members of Mexican society have developed national and transnational strategies to contribute to the respond to the rampant violence in their homeland.

By introducing a transdisciplinary approach and peacebuilding theories, this paper argues that Mexican migrants living in Brussels and Paris have been able to orchestrate transnational art-based strategies to contribute to the violence alleviation in their country of origin. In particular, this empirical paper argues that Mexican migrants living in these two …

The Sound Of The Sun: Religious Understandings Of Peace And The Role Of Religious Leaders In Peacebuilding―A Qualitative Study In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Stipe Odak Nov 2021

The Sound Of The Sun: Religious Understandings Of Peace And The Role Of Religious Leaders In Peacebuilding―A Qualitative Study In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Stipe Odak

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article discusses the different roles of religious leaders in peacebuilding processes, and their specific understanding of peace. It is based on analysis of 75 in-depth interviews with Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim religious leaders from Bosnia and Herzegovina, conducted in the period from 2015 to 2017. In the first part, peace is analyzed as a concept that contains elements of giftness, spirituality, and praxis. Arguing for the relevance of all three elements, the article warns against possible misunderstandings that can come when peace is assessed only through directly measurable indicators. In the second part, peacebuilding activities of religious leaders are …

Why The Bjorling Sound Was Written, Stephen Hastings Nov 2021

Why The Bjorling Sound Was Written, Stephen Hastings

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Now that The Bjorling Sound has been published, it is up to others to comment on its contents. And the more commentary there is (whether positive or negative) the happier I will be, for I always intended it to be an open-ended book, requiring an active response from readers, as part of an ongoing collective effort to understand Bjorling the artist. I have done my best to describe as precisely as possible the experience of listening to what I consider to be Jussi's finest recordings, and I naturally hope that the book will prove reasonably interesting even to opera-lovers who …

Writing About Jussi's Recordings, Stephan Hastings Nov 2021

Writing About Jussi's Recordings, Stephan Hastings

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

In his 1945 autobiography Jussi Bjorling advocated setting up a national archive of sound recordings. There is thus no doubting his awareness of the significance of his own legacy in this field, as well as that of earlier singers like Caruso. The Neapolitan of course was the tenor who influenced the adult Bjorling more than any other, and in writing a full length study of Jussi's most significant recordings-building on the invaluable research undertaken by Harald Henrysson for his PHONOGRAPHY- I have come across multiple examples of that influence.

Welcome To St. Peter! Jbs Celebrates The Bjorling Centenary, Ward Murray Nov 2021

Welcome To St. Peter! Jbs Celebrates The Bjorling Centenary, Ward Murray

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Many of us arrived in St. Peter on June 22nd to dark grey skies, blustery wind, and only 65 degrees Fahrenheit: we went scurrying to the Gustavus Adolphus College store to buy hoodies and windbreakers. This was in stark contrast to the balmy temperatures and blue skies a decade earlier. The grey clouds extended to the news that our president and driving force behind the centenary conference, Sue Flaster, would be unable to attend because of a painful back injury.

Could Whatsapp Be An Intervention Tool For Digital Social Work? A Case Study, Antonio Eito Mateo, María José Gómez Poyato, Antonio Matías Solanilla

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Ensuring that individuals who exhibit difficulties or problems are able to stay in their family and community environments has been an issue of concern for governments and welfare states for several decades. Authorities now seek to reverse the impact of periods or years of institutionalization and concealment of a variety of personal and social realities.

It should be highlighted that two phenomena, in particular, have increased interest in helping to keep individuals in their homes and community. First, aging populations and increased life expectancy, and second, the possibilities afforded by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The aging population is a …

Digital Intervention, Covid-19, And Critical Realism: Toward A Science Of Digital Social Work, Antonio López Peláez, Chaime Marcuello Servós

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up the pace of the digital transition process in which we have been immersed. In a context of generalized lockdown, our organizations have been forced to go digital and many of the activities social workers perform must now be done remotely. As a result, e-social work, or digital social work, has gone from being an emerging specialization to a critical specialty across organizations and activities. In this article, we examine some basic scientific and methodological foundations to develop a science of social work from the perspective of critical realism, with special attention to digitalization. Establishing …

Examining Evidence Of Reliability And Validity In Florida’S Human Trafficking Screening Tool, Monica Landers Nov 2021

Examining Evidence Of Reliability And Validity In Florida’S Human Trafficking Screening Tool, Monica Landers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) involving children is understood to be a pervasive public health problem that negatively impacts individuals, families, and communities (Greenbaum, 2020). Combined efforts of the United States government, federal agencies, organizations such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, researchers, and practitioners work toward understanding risk factors associated with CSE in an effort to prevent victimization (Fong & Cardoso, 2010). Given the amount of public and political attention to trafficking over the past two decades, it is concerning that prevalence estimates widely vary and may be unreliable. Further, there is not currently a validated screening …

Can The Multi-Theory Model (Mtm) Of Health Behavior Change Explain The Intent For People To Practice Meditation?, Manoj Sharma, Matthew Asare, Ram Lakhan, Amar Kanekar, Vinayak K. Nahar, Sheniz Moonie Phd

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Meditation is gaining popularity as adjuvant therapy for many chronic ailments, mental well-being, and spiritual growth. Behavioral theories have been underutilized in understanding meditation behavior. This study aimed to test if a fourth-generation multitheory model (MTM) could explain the intent for starting and maintaining meditation behavior in a sample of US adults. A face and content valid 48-item instrument based on MTM was administered in a cross-sectional design through an online survey (n =330). Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.70) and construct validation using structural equation modeling of the subscales were all acceptable. Hierarchical multiple regression revealed that, after controlling for …

Introduction: Interventions targeting multiple levels of influence and settings may have a greater impact on children’s total daily physical activity than those targeting a single setting. This study evaluated the addition of family supports to a classroom-based physical activity intervention.

Methods: 6 schools were randomized to a remotely delivered classroom-based physical activity only (CBPA) or classroom-based physical activity plus family (CBPA+) arm. The latter added behavior change tools (e.g., self-regulation) delivered via text messages and newsletters to caregiver/child dyads. The intervention lasted for 7 weeks with a 1-week baseline and 1-week post-intervention assessment (9 weeks total). Children who enrolled in …

Older Adults Are More Likely To Avoid Covid-19 Information, Julia Nolte, Corinna Löckenhoff Nov 2021

Older Adults Are More Likely To Avoid Covid-19 Information, Julia Nolte, Corinna Löckenhoff

Population Health Research Brief Series

Older adults are at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 but less interested in information that might lower the risk of getting or spreading the disease. This brief shows that in the first months of the pandemic, older adults were less likely to consume COVID-19 information or media than younger adults. These behaviors are associated with age differences in emotional experiences and preferences, with older adults feeling calmer and more interested in protecting their feelings than younger adults. To keep older adults informed on COVID-19, government and health officials should directly target communication efforts to older adults.

Chunk Of Change: Microlearning, Social Cognitive, And Transformative Learning Theory To Support Wellness Routines, Jessica Brand, Jenny Erickson

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

This paper explores the design of a 5-week course for Jamie O'Neil, a fitness and nutrition coaching company. Any quest to achieve optimal wellness requires the ability to make consistent personal choices that support one's own health, fitness, and nutritional needs. Efforts to support these choices are often strengthened when targeting both the cognitive and behavioral domains. Jamie O'Neil found this to be true. Clients revealed themselves to be highly self-critical and to operate on top of assumptions and beliefs about themselves. These beliefs deterred their motivation and ability to sustain new health habits. To ensure that both the cognitive …
