Customer Service 2.0: The Effect Of Ryanair's Policy Change, John C. Griffith Ph.D., Donna L. Roberts Ph.D.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Customer perceptions of Ryanair and Southwest were evaluated to compare two data periods; 2012-13 and 2016-17 to determine differences in passenger perceptions between and within airlines. Quantitative data and open area comments were analyzed. A replication of a previous study for 2016-17 data indicated that customer perceptions of Ryanair improved since the implementation of a customer service program. Survey results indicated Ryanair and Southwest did not have statistically significant differences in overall ratings; a change from 2012-13 data where Southwest was rated significantly higher. Additionally, 2016-17 Ryanair customers indicated they would recommend the airline at a significantly higher rate than …
Using Diffractive Activity To (Re)Configure Parental Choice Of Pre-Compulsory Education, Vicky Bamsey
Using Diffractive Activity To (Re)Configure Parental Choice Of Pre-Compulsory Education, Vicky Bamsey
Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
Prompted by the increasing number of children accessing alternatives to mainstream education, this research project was designed to investigate the activity of parents as they engaged in choosing different forms of education for their four-year-old child. The intention was to highlight the individual and entangled activity of parental choice in the English system of education. Facet methodology facilitated an exploration of the multi-dimensionality of each parent’s lived experience. It allowed for flexibility within the research process that used open interviews to follow the narratives of six sets of parents while they were thinking about and making different educational choices for …
The Holistic Assessment And Care Planning In Partnership (Happi) Study A Mixed Methods Feasibility Study Of A Nurse-Led Intervention For Older People Who Live With Frailty, Helen Lyndon
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
Aim. This mixed-methods feasibility study aimed to identify and to develop consensus on the components of a holistic assessment and care planning intervention for frail older people in primary care and to conduct a feasibility cluster randomised, controlled trial with an embedded qualitative study to assess potential trial methods for a definitive trial.Background. Frailty is a serious but not inevitable consequence of ageing that can be managed as a long-tern condition. Frail older people are more at risk to adverse health outcomes than the non-frail, yet many do not receive evidence based management including a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA); a …

Employability As Sustainable Balance Of Stakeholder Expectations - Towards A Model For The Health Professions, Martin Cake, Melinda Bell, Liz Mossop, Caroline F. Mansfield
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
The conceptual complexity of employability remains a barrier for its integration into discipline-based curricula. In the health professions, a particular challenge lies in integrating employability with the dominant paradigms of competency and professionalism. In this study, we explore these contextual challenges, and present the rationale and conceptual basis for a potential re-framing of employability within the context of this discipline group. We propose a novel definition and a conceptual model of employability better aligned to the needs of health professions. While employability has proven difficult to define broadly, it is framed around the expectations of both the employer and employee, …
Unaccompanied Youth In Our Public Schools And Our Opportunity To Lead For Emancipatory Practices (Jóvenes No Acompañados En Nuestras Escuelas Públicas Y Nuestra Oportunidad Para Liderar Prácticas Emancipatorias), Leyda W. Garcia
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Unaccompanied youth are migrant children who travel by themselves to the United States, mostly from Central America and Mexico. Since 2014, more than 200,000 unaccompanied youth have entered the United States, with approximately 28,000 residing in Los Angeles, California (U.S. Customs and Border Protection [CBP], CBP 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021a, 2021b). Hundreds of these young migrants have enrolled in public schools (Pierce, 2016). Schools seek adequate and effective ways to support these students’ complex needs and aspirations. Within the body of research about this sub-group of immigrants there is a significant absence of the voices of unaccompanied youth themselves, which …

Building An Ignatian Ummah: The Experience Of Muslim International Students At An American Jesuit University, Csilla V. Samay
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In 2020, over a million international students enrolled at universities in the United States. A significant percent come from Muslim-majority countries whose governments sponsor their education abroad. As overall international enrollments decrease, recruiting this population remains attractive to U.S. institutions. International students face the challenge of entering higher education in a foreign country and culture, navigating their education during a time of political battles over immigration and issues of diversity. Muslim students face prejudice and exclusion due to Islamophobia in the U.S. Universities have a responsibility to understand and fully support students from whom they benefit financially.
This study examined …

African American Superintendent Perceptions And Experiences With The Recruitment, Selection And Promotion Process, Dennis Perry
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The underrepresentation of African Americans in the superintendency and lack of equitable access to the superintendency in K-12 public school districts across the United States is a problem of significant concern. This qualitative study explores the perceptions of 17 African American superintendents with the recruitment, selection, and promotion process to the superintendency while examining how the role of race, racism, sexism, and discrimination contribute to the underrepresentation of African American superintendents. The career and employment experiences of African American superintendents via semi-structured interviews is how this study extrapolates data to answer the research question. Thematic analysis based on narrative inquiry …
Student Self-Harm: The Impact On An Elementary School Principal's Leadership, Jason Daniel Rose
Student Self-Harm: The Impact On An Elementary School Principal's Leadership, Jason Daniel Rose
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Research on self-harm and children tends to focus on adolescent children (12 years of age and above). There is limited available information about self-harm in children ages 11 years and younger. This study utilized autoethnography as the methodology to provide a rich description of the professional experiences and practices of an elementary school principal who worked with self-harming primary-aged students. Based on an autoethnographical analysis, this study proposes future research and makes recommendations for school leaders implementing trauma-informed practices, educators working with self-harming students, and districts committed to proactive support.

Cr Cybermar As A Solution Path Towards Cybersecurity Soundness In Maritime Logistics Domain, Monica Canepa, Fabio Ballini, Dimitrios Dalaklis, Seyedvahid Vakili, Luis Miguel Colmenares Hernandez
Articles
Cybersecurity is now considered as one of the main challenges for the maritime sector. At the same time, the maritime transport industry remains one of the most relevant and driving sectors for the global economy in terms of both the number and operations of active companies, and infrastructure and investments, thanks to the policies pushed to attract the latter. Maritime information systems, whether on board ships or in ports, are numerous, built with standard components available on the market and in many cases designed without factoring in well the ever-growing cyber risk. Digital infrastructure has become essential in operating and …
The Evaluative Chameleon: The Valance Of Observed Action Outcomes Determines Automatic Imitation, Helen Sharps
The Evaluative Chameleon: The Valance Of Observed Action Outcomes Determines Automatic Imitation, Helen Sharps
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Humans have a tendency to imitate the actions they observe in others, a process assumed to rely on an automatic bottom-up mapping of observed action features to one’s own motor system. In contrast, imitation in children is goal-directed, aimed at achieving the same outcome as the model. This thesis examines whether such an outcome-dependence can also be observed in automatic imitation. In six experiments, participants watched an actor make movements after observing the same movements and evaluated the valence of these outcomes with either compatible or incompatible responses. Chapter 2 showed that automatic imitation depends on action outcomes and showed …
Can The Value And Acceptability Of A Patient Feedback Tool For Revalidating Psychiatrists Be Improved For Both Patients And Psychiatrists Through Its Co-Production? An Action Research Approach., Rebecca Baines
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Background: Co-production is often suggested as an alternative approach to patient feedback design. However, critical exploration of how co-production may affect the perceived value and acceptability of a patient feedback tool is severely limited, particularly in the context of revalidation for practising psychiatrists. Aim: This research sought to address four research questions: i) how are patients and the public involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of patient feedback tools for practising psychiatrists, if at all; ii) what are patient and psychiatrist perceptions, experiences and aspirations for patient feedback tools in revalidation; iii) how do these compare and iv) can …
The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation On Attention Regulation, Paul Sharpe
The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation On Attention Regulation, Paul Sharpe
Other Faculty of Health Theses
The research in this thesis tested the claim that mindfulness meditation regulates attention. Attention regulation was operationalised as an improvement on alerting, orienting or executive attention measured using the Attention Network Test (ANT), or a reduction in the attentional blink (AB) effect, measured using a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) task. Chapter 1 reviews the relevant literature. Chapters 2 and 3 report five experiments which tested the effects of Focused Attention Meditation (FAM) on the ANT. In Chapter 2, no effects of brief FAM were found on the ANT in novices (Experiment 1), or long-term meditators (Experiments 2 and 3). …
A Practice-As-Research Project Utilizing Butler’S (1990) Feminist/ Post-Structuralist Theory Of Gender Performativity, As Well As Connells (2001) System Of Hegemony, Complicity, And Subordination To Interrogate The Formation Of Toxic Masculinities Through Practice-As-Research And Live Art Methodologies, Charlie Cornforth
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
In the past twenty years or so, the concept of masculinity has come under increasing scrutiny. What used to constitute as socially acceptable behaviour for men to engage in, has increasingly become challenged by developments such as the MeToo movement. There are now stable grounds to argue that there is such thing as a toxic masculinity, an understanding that has been brought about through a series of questions that ask what grounds masculinity is constructing its position of authority and power upon, what behaviours associated with masculinity are bringing harm to both society as a whole, the individual man and …
Philip Guston’S Absurd And The Sisyphean Affirmation In The Battle For Existentialism, Jason Blacklock
Philip Guston’S Absurd And The Sisyphean Affirmation In The Battle For Existentialism, Jason Blacklock
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Abstract Philip Guston’s Absurd and the Sisyphean Affirmation of the Battle for Existentialism – By Jason Blacklock This dissertation offers an Existentialist interpretation of the life and work of Philip Guston. Discourse regarding avant-garde New York School artists and their knowledge and manipulation of Existentialism has an illustrious rollcall. Dore Ashton and Harold Rosenberg, amongst others have added their powers of exegesis to contemporary work by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Amongst this canon of America’s great twentieth century Abstract-Expressionists Philip Guston’s work is often noted, but rarely aligned fully with Existentialist and particularly Absurdist values. I …
Lut Lut Lut A Collection Of Poems Accompanied By A Critical Thesis: The Poetics Of The Dérive And Détournement With Reference To The Situationists, Susan Howe And Peter Riley, Sam Kemp
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This project investigates the role of the artistic techniques of the dérive and détournement in the work of contemporary poets Susan Howe and Peter Riley, exploring the ways in which these poets adapt, develop and draw inspiration from Situationist avant-garde practices of the mid to late twentieth century. The study consists of two chapters, preceded and followed by an introduction and conclusion. My introduction introduces the key features of the Situationist theory of psychogeography, a radical walking technique aimed at undermining the spectacle of urban commercialism in 1950s Paris, and demonstrates how the frameworks of the dérive and détournement, key …
William Blake’S Selfhood And The Atomistic Materialism Of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, Joshua Schouten De Jel
William Blake’S Selfhood And The Atomistic Materialism Of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, Joshua Schouten De Jel
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis demonstrates for the first time the way in which William Blake aligned his idiosyncratic concept of the Selfhood – the lens through which the despiritualised subject beholds the material world – with the atomistic materialism of the Epicurean school as it was transmitted through the first-century BC Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. Not only will I argue that Blake was aware of classical atomistic cosmogony and sense-based epistemology, but that he systematically mapped postlapsarian existence onto the philosophical framework of Epicurean cosmogony. As a result, when the subject succumbs to the Selfhood and once the …

Because You’Re Worth The Risks: Acts Of Oppositional Courage As Symbolic Messages Of Relational Value To Transgender Employees, Christian Thoroughgood, Katina Sawyer, Jennica R. Webster
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Achieving greater social equity in organizations often depends on majority members taking risks to challenge the status quo on behalf of their colleagues with stigmatized identities. But, how do employees enact courageous behavior in this regard, and what are the social implications of these courageous acts on stigmatized group members who witness them at work? To begin examining these questions, we conducted 4 studies using qualitative and quantitative data collected from 428 transgender employees. Drawing on the core principles of sociometer theory, we argue that these acts of oppositional courage serve an important symbolic function in the eyes of transgender …

Maternal Social Support, Depression And Emotional Availability In Early Mother-Infant Interaction: Findings From A Pregnancy Cohort, Kelli K. Macmillan, Andrew J. Lewis, Stuart J. Watson, Declan Bourke, Megan Galbally
Nursing Papers and Journal Articles
Background: Social support theory suggests that parental social support may influence the nature of early parenting behaviours and specifically the mother-infant relationship. This study examines whether support from a partner, friends or family is associated with differences in quality of mother-infant interactions in the context of maternal depression.
Methods: 210 women were followed from early pregnancy to six months postpartum within Australian pregnancy cohort, the Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS). Mother-infant interactions within a standardised observation at six months postpartum were measured by the Emotional Availability (EA) Scales using total scores of the parental scales. In early and …

Infant Removal From Birth Parents - How Does Health Information Impact Court Decisions? A Scoping Review, Rachel Gregory-Wilson, Liesel Spencer, Elizabeth Handsley, Toby Raeburn
Nursing Papers and Journal Articles
Problem: Courts make complex decisions daily regarding removal of infants from birth parents and placement in out-of-home care. Nurses and other health professionals often take part in such processes, either as court informants, witnesses, or via their role delivering healthcare to infants and/or birth parents involved. To date there has been very little research exploring how health information impacts upon decision-making about infant removal.
Aim: To explore how health information impacts court decisions about removing infants from birth parents.
Methods: Using Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage method for scoping reviews as a guide, eight electronic databases were searched to identify relevant …
An Examination Of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms And Aggression Among Children With A History Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Elizabeth M. Mcrae, Laura Stoppelbein, Sarah E. O'Kelley, Paula Fite, Shana B. Smith
Smith
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Childhood aggression is associated with many deleterious outcomes and is a common reason for psychiatric referral (Card and Little 2006; Gurnani, Ivanov, and Newcorn 2016). One factor associated with childhood aggression is Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs; Felitti et al. 1998). However, existing research remains equivocal on which characteristics of ACEs (e.g., cumulative impact, typology, etc.) are significantly elated to aggression, especially when considering differential effects of ACEs on proactive aggression (PA) and reactive aggression (RA; Dodge and Coie, 1987). Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are a common negative sequalae of ACEs and are characterized by disruptions in several cognitive, emotional, and …
Examining Organizational Factors And Their Impact On Older Adults In Life Plan Communities, Ajla Basic
Examining Organizational Factors And Their Impact On Older Adults In Life Plan Communities, Ajla Basic
Master's Theses
Aging in America continues to reveal multi-faceted concerns for both the industry and retirees; insufficient retirement savings, loneliness, and a high influx of older adults entering the retirement scene. It is expected that by 2030, 18% of the nation's population, the baby boomers, will have turned 65 (Cohn & Taylor, 2010). This demographic reality has led to increased research seeking answers to questions which emerge about the retirement age population. The Age Well Study is a longitudinal study looking at the impact of residing in a Life Plan Community. The data is collected through self-report measures by residents in the …
Ethnic Racial Socialization, Ethnic Identity, And Internalizing Outcomes In The Context Of Stress Among Mexican Origin Families, Sarah Alicia Jolie
Ethnic Racial Socialization, Ethnic Identity, And Internalizing Outcomes In The Context Of Stress Among Mexican Origin Families, Sarah Alicia Jolie
Master's Theses
Research demonstrates that it is important to study the impact of cultural factors on child development and well-being (Garcia Coll et al., 1996). Among Latino youth, ethnic racial socialization and ethnic identity have been associated with positive outcomes, such as academic competence and lower reports of internalizing problems (Liu & Lau, 2013; Berkel et al., 2010; Umaña-Taylor & Guimond, 2010). Additionally, there is evidence of ethnic identity mediating the association between ethnic racial socialization and child internalizing symptoms among Mexican-origin adolescents (Umaña-Taylor et al., 2014). However, more research is needed in examining these associations within stressful contexts relevant to Latino …
Rethinking Intimacy: Liberation Through Decolonial & Queer World-Making, Michelle Mae Mcguire
Rethinking Intimacy: Liberation Through Decolonial & Queer World-Making, Michelle Mae Mcguire
Master's Theses
Relationships play an important role in both the private and public spheres of our lives. If we understand our bodies to be the vessels through which we interact with all other objects, we come to understand the process of world-making as a summation of our relationships. Intimacy is the prevailing structure that helps assign meaning to these relationships. Intimacy binds together unfixed spatial and social relations that stretch across time and space. This essay examines the three intersecting sets of relations involved in intimacy as a means to deconstruct heteropatriarchal order and highlight the multiplicity of attachments and relationships that …
The Role Of Intersensory Redundancy In Face Recognition In 5- And 12-Month-Old Infants, Aslı Bursalıoğlu
The Role Of Intersensory Redundancy In Face Recognition In 5- And 12-Month-Old Infants, Aslı Bursalıoğlu
Master's Theses
The goal of this study was to examine the role of audiovisual synchrony in 5- and 12-month-old infants’ attention to and processing of face stimuli. Infants were tested using an online platform called Lookit. In the first phase of the experiment, infants were familiarized with two videos presented simultaneously and side-by-side. Each video displayed a woman speaking in an infant-directed manner. A soundtrack was played that matched one of the videos (experimental condition) or neither of the videos (control condition). It was hypothesized that synchronous audiovisual presentation would attract infants’ attention and promote processing, especially among 12-month-olds. Visual-paired comparison (VPC) …
Menstrual Pain Trajectories And Their Psychological And Behavioral Predictors, Hannah Marie Alves Hagy
Menstrual Pain Trajectories And Their Psychological And Behavioral Predictors, Hannah Marie Alves Hagy
Master's Theses
Despite the high prevalence of menstrual pain (i.e., dysmenorrhea) and the negative impact on quality of life, there is a dearth of research on how menstrual pain changes over time. There is also a critical need to understand psychological and behavioral predictors of these menstrual pain trajectories because dysmenorrhea is a known risk factor for the development of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and chronic non-pelvic pain (CNPP). Given that current treatments for CPP and CNPP have had limited success, developing preventative strategies for dysmenorrhea is of high importance. Relying on longitudinal survey data collected as part of a larger investigation, …
Kinship Involvement And Strength Development In The Child Welfare System, Nicole Amper Hodgkinson
Kinship Involvement And Strength Development In The Child Welfare System, Nicole Amper Hodgkinson
Master's Theses
For youth involved in the Child Welfare System (CWS), maltreatment and ecological losses pose enormous challenges to healthy development. Kin and fictive kin involvement, a current CWS priority, may have the potential to aid in strength development; however, little is known about its role in this process. The current study explored the following aims: (1) identify the role of kin and fictive kin in strength development (2) investigate the impact of maltreatment on initial strength levels and their development over time and (3) examine the extent to which kinship involvement interacts with prior maltreatment to buffer the impact of maltreatment …
Victim-Blaming In Disguise? Supervisors’ Accounts Of Problems In Healthcare Delivery, Kendra Jason, Brianna Turgeon
Victim-Blaming In Disguise? Supervisors’ Accounts Of Problems In Healthcare Delivery, Kendra Jason, Brianna Turgeon
Research, Publications & Creative Work
Using data from 77 supervisors in seven hospitals across the U.S. that participated in a national workforce development program for low-wage frontline workers, we explain how supervisors justified and reproduced social inequalities by accepting culture of poverty and neoliberal discourses and how supervisors used these discourses to resolve identity-work dilemmas. We demonstrate how supervisors engaged in identity talk that justified deprivation for workers and shielded management from blame. We discuss how supervisors subtly invoked class, race, and gender stereotypes—and thus reproduced ideologies supportive of structural inequalities—as they crafted accounts that drew attention away from economic and organizational problems and focused …
Impediments To Mathematical Creativity: Fixation And Flexibility In Proof Validation, Per Øystein Haavold
Impediments To Mathematical Creativity: Fixation And Flexibility In Proof Validation, Per Øystein Haavold
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Mathematical techniques in proof writing can be narrowed down to specific proof styles. Simply put, proofs can be direct or indirect- the latter using the Law of the Excluded Middle from logic as well as the axiom of Choice, to prove existence of mathematical objects. However, the thinking skills involved in writing indirect proofs are prone to errors, especially from novice proof writers such as prospective teachers. Creativity in mathematics entails the use of both direct and indirect approaches to determine the validity of a statement. In this article, I shed some light on this relationship, by reporting on some …
