Fundraising and donations are the main sources of revenue for behavioral health care nonprofit organizations (NPOs) worldwide. Economic, political, social, or health crises impact fundraising and donation sources for behavioral health care NPOs. This qualitative case study addressed strategies that senior leaders of a Lebanese behavioral health care NPO could use in times of crisis. The study also addressed the behavioral health leaders’ experience managing a funding crisis. The Baldrige conceptual framework was used to assess the organization’s effectiveness in seven key areas. Interviews with the senior leaders and analysis of the organization’s archival data were used to inform the …
Exploring Probation Clients’ Perception Of The Officer-Client Relationship, Robert Lee Ausby
Exploring Probation Clients’ Perception Of The Officer-Client Relationship, Robert Lee Ausby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Community supervision, commonly referred to as probation, is an alternative to jail and prison sentences which allow offenders to serve court-imposed sanctions in the community. The present study stemmed from Klockars’s theory of probation supervision which contains two concepts, (a) the organizational structure of probation, which has been studied repeatedly, and (b) the exchange strategy between the officer and client. The second concept has not been adequately explored. Previous literature has explored the perception that probation officers have of their clients. However, no study has explored the perception that clients have of their probation officers. The purpose of this study …

Effects Of Attribution And Appraisal Of Control On Emergency Department Nurse Stress When Treating Patients With Severe Mental Illness, Cynthia Lynn Bentzen-Mercer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAs the prevalence of severe mental illness continues to rise and access to mental health care is scarce, an increasing number of U.S. adults seek treatment in emergency departments. Nurses who triage the severity of a medical emergency may appraise the situation both through the lens of mental illness stigma and the degree of confidence they have to control the outcome. However, the research community knows little about the extent to which attribution and appraisal of control affect nurses’ appraisal of stress. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental, canonical correlational study was to examine the extent to which various combinations …

Oppositional Behavior Parallels In Toddlers And Teens And Parent’S Response, Michele Dimmett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parents seem to manage oppositional conduct of toddlers but struggle emotionally and physically with oppositional conduct of teenagers, despite similarities in the behaviors. Self-efficacy theory, psychological theory of development, and theory of mind guided the conceptualization of how parents perceive and respond to these two sensitive periods of development. This contrasted group quantitative study pursued measurable similarities in the experience of first-time parents of children aged 18-36 months and 14-15 years of age. Establishing parents’ confidence level in their parenting skills and how they perceive and respond to their child's oppositional behavior was also a factor. One hundred and seventy-five …

Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mass shootings are devastating events that occur in many communities in the United States. Mass shootings bring significant psychological distress and contribute to the development of trauma. The communities affected by mass shootings rely on an effective and efficient response from first responders who assist survivors by providing psychological and physical assistance. Because first responders are the first to deal with the aftermath of mass shootings, they assume immediate secondary trauma. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether a statistically significant relationship existed between the independent variables of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and the three …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Organizational Subculture On Ethical Decision Making In Policing, Sonya M. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe culture of the workplace setting intertwined with how one interprets ethics and code of conduct can be factors that separate acceptable and unacceptable conduct in policing. The reluctance of police agency executives willingness to assess the integrity of their departments often stems from the fear of negative community perceptions followed by unwanted oversight and operational recommendations. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of police officers regarding the influence of organizational subculture on ethical decision-making. The theoretical framework for this study used Sutherland’s Differential Association Theory and Aker’s Social Learning Theory. …

The purpose of this cross-sectional, quantitative study was to explore what factors law enforcement officers consider when encountering a juvenile involved in prostitution that influences their judgment on whether the juvenile is a victim of sex trafficking or a juvenile delinquent. Each of the 50 U.S. states has laws that address juvenile sex trafficking. The research questions for this study centered around the Trafficking Victim Protection Act (TVPA) and factors that influence officers' use of discretion …
Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA significant positive correlation between higher metacognitive strategy use and better reading comprehension among native English-speaking children and adult learners of English as an additional language, consistently presented in the literature, has not been consistently or directly found among native English-speaking adult high school graduates who enroll in postsecondary learning programs such as university programs. Consequences for adult learners with lower reading comprehension scores at college entry include significantly lower earnings over their lifespan due in part to greater risk for not completing a postsecondary program. This nonexperimental cross-sectional study was guided by two theoretical frameworks, one for adult reading …

Improving Nurses’ Knowledge To Provide Diabetes Self-Management Education For African Americans, Jakeyla Reed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans are at high risk for type II diabetes compared to other ethnic groups due to biological, socioeconomic, and psychosocial risks. Specifically, African American adults are nearly two times more likely than White individuals to develop type II diabetes. The meaningful gap-in-practice addressed by this doctoral project was nurses’ lack of diabetes knowledge affecting their ability to provide diabetes care and diabetes self-management education (DSME) to their patients with diabetes. The clinical practice-focused question asked whether an education intervention for outpatient clinic nurses could improve their knowledge of DSME. Orem’s self-care model, Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, and Lewin’s change theory …
