Literature Review: The Effects Of Covid-19 Pandemic-Driven Home Behavior In Housing Preference, Mahdaniar Maulidini Muhyi, Joko Adianto

Smart City

This literature review is aimed to identify the possible correlation between Covid-19 pandemic and housing preferences. It is known that the pandemic has impacts on human activities and this also has an indirect effect on housing selection. We used a qualitative method by reviewing 52 papers and articles related to pandemic and residential real estate from March 2020 to May 2021. The review indicates that Covid-19 pandemic has induced to the housing preferences: fear of meeting people, fear of economic recession, and ‘stay at home’ lifestyle. The pandemic increases people’s needs to control their living space, including personal safety space, …

Racial Disparity In Educational Punishment, Elizabeth R. Wirtz Nov 2021

Racial Disparity In Educational Punishment, Elizabeth R. Wirtz

Modern Psychological Studies

There is a growing epidemic of children of color being disproportionately and inappropriately disciplined due to recommendations for exclusionary educational discipline practices such as suspension and expulsion. Throughout the literature, SES, level of ability, gender, and skin color were essential factors in evaluating students’ suspension risk. The most salient of these factors is race. Implicit bias towards darker-skinned students is the main factor for the discipline gap. This literature review explores the causes and rates that middle school and high school students of color are disproportionately recommended for suspension and expulsion and the consequences of racially discriminatory discipline practices. Exclusionary …

The Effect Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental Health And Cognitive Functioning, David C. Steinberger, Deanna M. Barch Nov 2021

The Effect Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental Health And Cognitive Functioning, David C. Steinberger, Deanna M. Barch

Modern Psychological Studies

Research has revealed links between perceived discrimination (PD), mental health, and cognition. The present study sought to understand the moderational role of PD in the relation of mental health to cognition. Our sample consisted of 11,878 9–12-year-olds across 21 study sites. We conducted linear mixed effects models to analyze child internalizing/externalizing problem behaviors, cognitive ability, and PD. Higher PD related to worse internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Further, worse cognitive abilities generally related to worse internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Moreover, PD moderated the relation of internalizing/externalizing to cognition. Future longitudinal research should seek to establish the temporality of the relationships addressed …

A Qualitative Study Of Students' Experiences Of Adversarial Growth At University, James Colbert, Dr Phil Willmot Nov 2021

A Qualitative Study Of Students' Experiences Of Adversarial Growth At University, James Colbert, Dr Phil Willmot

Modern Psychological Studies

Most people will experience adversity in their lives. Research has shown that people may experience positive growth after an adverse event. University can be an adverse event for students. This study investigates whether students experience adversarial growth because of their university experience and the process by which this growth occurs. Eight participants (five male, three female) took part in semi-structured interviews during which they were asked about their experiences of growth during their time at university. Using thematic analysis, five themes were established from the interviews: 1) Sources of stress, 2) Experience not matching expectations, 3) Areas of positive growth, …

Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio Nov 2021

Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio

Modern Psychological Studies

The American Dream has functioned as an idealized view of success in the United States since its conception in the 1930s. As generations pass, questions of plausibility and definition surround the American Dream. Over the course of 20 semi-structured interviews composed of open-ended questions, participants were asked how they defined the American Dream and how plausible they felt achieving the American Dream was for them. The participants were then compared across age differences. Across participants, six clear themes were most often associated with the American Dream: hard work, freedom, social mobility, material gain, family connection, and individuality. Older participants had …

New Graduate Nurse Retention Strategies: An Integrative Literature Review, Amy Fiala Nov 2021

New Graduate Nurse Retention Strategies: An Integrative Literature Review, Amy Fiala

Nursing Masters Papers

Decreasing nurse retention rates, particularly of new graduate nurses, is a costly issue for health care organizations across the country. Turnover rates for new nurses average around 20% in the first year following graduation (Kovner, et al., 2014). Low retention rates also create staff burnout, orientation fatigue for preceptors, poor morale, and safety concerns. The purpose of this integrative literature review is to identify best practice strategies and interventions to increase new graduate nurse retention in the acute care setting. Ten articles were selected for this review, including three high-level systematic reviews. Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory was chosen as the conceptual …

Plus 50 Students And Their Experiences With Technology In Undergraduate Classes, Jamillah L. Boyd, Nykea T. Watts-Edwards Nov 2021

Plus 50 Students And Their Experiences With Technology In Undergraduate Classes, Jamillah L. Boyd, Nykea T. Watts-Edwards

Dissertations

As adult learners over 50 continue to pursue higher education, postsecondary institutions should have resources and services available to support this demographic. Previous research often combines Plus 50 students with all nontraditional students 24 years and older, making it difficult to understand the unique needs and learning experiences of older adult students in the academic environment. The use of technology for curriculum has increased significantly over the years and may present challenges for Plus 50 learners as they are introduced to it and learn to navigate it. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Plus 50 …

Teacher Efficacy, Burnout, And Retention: An Examination Of Instructional Coaching And The Implications As Measured By The Maslach Burnout Inventory, Patricia Jeanette Rodriguez

Dissertations

Instructional coaching is implemented by school districts for the professional development of staff (Knight, 2007). The purpose of this quantitative study was to gain information regarding the effectiveness of an instructional coaching program to limit teacher burnout and increase teacher retention. Non-tenured teachers from two rural school districts were surveyed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory to determine levels of burnout in teachers who participated in an instructional coaching program versus teachers in a school district that did not offer instructional coaching. Retention data gathered from district administrators were analyzed to determine how instructional coaching impacts teacher retention. A purposive sample …

The Lived Professional Experiences And Potential Impact Of Generation Z Registered Nurses, Sarah E. Abalos Nov 2021

The Lived Professional Experiences And Potential Impact Of Generation Z Registered Nurses, Sarah E. Abalos

Dissertations

The profession of nursing is evolving as a result of the changes in the characteristics of practicing nurses. There are currently five generations of nurses in practice: Silent Generation, Baby Boomer, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z. Each generation of nurses possess unique characteristics as a result of the time frame in which they were born and matured, and their differing worldviews are influencing how they view and practice nursing. Although there is a significant amount of research documenting how the different generations of nurses have influenced the profession, Generation Z has yet to be studied over time because …

Modeling The Dynamics Of Charged Nanoparticles In Inverted Dielectric Systems For Exploration Of Novel Tunable Materials, Etee Kawna Roy Nov 2021

Modeling The Dynamics Of Charged Nanoparticles In Inverted Dielectric Systems For Exploration Of Novel Tunable Materials, Etee Kawna Roy

Student Theses and Dissertations

The electrostatic force plays an important role in charged particles’ self-assembly in inverted dielectric systems. The non-linear interactions between higher order multipoles are held responsible for the minimum energy equilibria formation of the dielectric particles. In this thesis, we use dynamic modeling of electrostatic interactions of charged particles and show that multiple nanoparticles can bind in minimum energy configurations exclusively by electrostatic forces that dominate at short distances in an inverted dielectric environment. It is also seen that the approximate model cannot explain the anomalous interactions for all binary clusters. Moreover, while an analytical model provides proper explanation for these …

Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb Nov 2021

Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb

Student Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has determined that exposure to parental incarceration increases the chances of children having behavior problems. Using data from the Fragile Families and Childhood Wellbeing Study, the identification of parental incarceration and how it impacts fragile families will be explored. This study focuses on how parental incarceration affects an adolescent’s social, emotional, and behavioral development and how that leads to behavioral problems and delinquency. Further, the current study will examine if involvement in extracurricular activities moderates the relationship between parental incarceration and behavior problems. Identifying how exposure to parental incarceration affects adolescents could help identify new and additional ways …

Executive Pay-Performance Relationship Among Listed Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria, Abdulkadir Rihanat Idowu Nov 2021

Executive Pay-Performance Relationship Among Listed Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria, Abdulkadir Rihanat Idowu

Business Management Review

This paper examines the executive pay-performance relationship among listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. It also investigates other possible determinants of executive pay, as well as factors that moderate the pay-performance relationship. Results from the dynamic panel GMM regression indicate that excessive pay does not match performance, as pay rises with declining performance. Other factors that explain the executive pay of the sampled banks include board size, board independence and CEO ownership. Findings further reveal that the pay-performance relationship is negatively moderated by board independence, as executive pay is found to rise with increase in performance when there are more …

Virtual Reality As A Context For Adaptation, Matthew Yarossi, Madhur Mangalam, Stephanie Naufel, Eugene Tunik Nov 2021

Virtual Reality As A Context For Adaptation, Matthew Yarossi, Madhur Mangalam, Stephanie Naufel, Eugene Tunik

Journal Articles

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated interest in virtual reality (VR) for education, entertainment, telerehabilitation, and skills training. As the frequency and duration of VR engagement increases—the number of people in the United States using VR at least once per month is forecasted to exceed 95 million—it is critical to understand how VR engagement influences brain and behavior. Here, we evaluate neurophysiological effects of sensory conflicts induced by VR engagement and posit an intriguing hypothesis: the brain processes VR as a unique “context” leading to the formation and maintenance of independent sensorimotor representations. We discuss known VR-induced sensorimotor adaptations to illustrate …
