Biofilm infections in wounds seriously delay the healing process, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of wound infections. In addition to inactivating micro-organisms, low-temperature gas plasma can restore the sensitivity of pathogenic microbes to antibiotics. However, the combined treatment has not been applied to infectious diseases. In this study, low-temperature gas plasma treatment promoted the effects of different antibiotics on the reduction of S. aureus biofilms in vitro. Low-temperature gas plasma combined with rifampicin also effectively reduced the S. aureus cells in biofilms in the murine wound infection model. The blood and histochemical analysis demonstrated the biosafety of …

The modern era holds vast modalities in human data utilization. Within Biocybersecurity (BCS), categories of biological information, especially medical information transmitted online, can be viewed as pathways to destabilize organizations. Therefore, analysis of how the public, along with medical providers, process such data, and the methods by which false information, particularly propaganda, can be used to upset the flow of verified information to populations of medical professionals, is important for maintenance of public health. Herein, we discuss some interplay of BCS within the scope of propaganda and considerations for navigating the field.

Temporary Abdominal Closure Techniques, Laura R. Brown, Rebecca M. Rentea
Temporary Abdominal Closure Techniques, Laura R. Brown, Rebecca M. Rentea
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Critically ill patients with underlying intraabdominal hypertension due to sepsis or injury are often managed with a damage control laparotomy (DCL), which involves the minimum intervention necessary to save the patient’s life. In order to save time, the abdomen may be left open to facilitate a second look to confirm the control of bleeding or sepsis before fascial closure. In the interim, some patients will develop bowel and abdominal wall edema with a high-volume resuscitation, especially if the crystalloid fluid is used primarily.
The many causes and management of intraabdominal hypertension as well as the indications for a damage control …

Foundations Of Publicly Subsidized Sport Stadiums: The Case Of U.S. Bank Stadium, Tanner P. Jerome
Health and Nutritional Sciences Graduate Students Plan B Capstone Projects
This study aims to address the common considerations concerning publicly subsidized sport stadiums. To provide an in-depth illustration into this process, a case study narrative of the Minnesota Vikings’ journey to receiving a public subsidization totaling $498 million for the construction of the U.S. Bank Stadium is presented. As sport stadiums seemingly incorporate more luxurious amenities each year, it is not uncommon to see the price tag for a professional stadium to surpass a billion dollars. Given this colossal cost, it has become difficult for private investments to finance an entire stadium alone. Therefore, combining the private financing of a …

Health and Nutritional Sciences Graduate Students Plan B Capstone Projects
Corporate sponsorships, trademark licensing, and broadcasting rights within college athletics have become a multibillion-dollar business over the past decade. However, a gap in research exists within local businesses sponsorship of college athletics. Many college towns heavily rely on local businesses, specifically restaurants, to attract and retain sports fans. The purpose of this study is to examine local restaurants’ marketing strategies, community relations, and other sponsorship donations impacting the involvement of its collegiate sport sponsorship at the mid-major conference level. Purposeful sampling was used to include two local restaurant owners who participate in sport sponsorship in a Midwest college team. Semi-structured …

Good For You Or Good For Us? A Field Experiment On Motivating Citizen Behavior Change, Syon Bhanot
Economics Faculty Works
In recent years, public sector agencies have increasingly been moving citizen services online to reduce administrative burdens for citizens and costs for governments. However, motivating citizens to make the transition to online services can be difficult. In this paper, I report on a randomized control trial with the Philadelphia Licenses and Inspections Department, testing a letter intervention with 11,579 rental license holders designed to encourage them to register for an account and renew online. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a control group that did not receive a letter or one of three treatment groups: 1) Standard (a simple reminder …

Assessing Barriers And Benefits To A Food Waste Composting Pilot Program In Oberlin, Ohio, Julia Halm
Honors Papers
Food waste represents significant amounts of money, energy, and natural resources throughout its lifecycle from production to disposal. Diverting the quantity of food waste sent to landfills is necessary to address the growing strain on resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study was a collaborative effort between the City of Oberlin and Oberlin College designed to identify challenges and benefits to establishing a pilot municipal composting program. Establishing a citywide composting program will help Oberlin achieve its goal of carbon neutrality. We used food audits, stakeholder interviews, and emissions reduction models to better understand the best approach to municipal …

The Relationship Between Oral Health Deficits And Oral Health Related Quality Of Life In The Older Adult Population, Lisa Proffitt
The Relationship Between Oral Health Deficits And Oral Health Related Quality Of Life In The Older Adult Population, Lisa Proffitt
Open Access Master's Theses
Oral comfort plays a vital role in the older adult population in which social events and participation require adequate oral health to avoid pain and discomfort. Oral discomfort may discourage social experiences and decrease an individual’s overall quality of life. Evaluating the relationship between one’s oral health and quality of life is dependent on a variety of influences, including oral health deficits, such as using a denture appliance or having inadequate number of teeth to function and maintain oral comfort. The current study aims to examine the relationship between one’s oral health status and Oral Health Related Quality of Life …

Post-Emergence Movements And Habitat Use By Hatchling Diamondback Terrapins (Malaclemys Terrapin), Carolyn Decker
Open Access Master's Theses
Diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) require estuarine habitats for most aspects of their life cycles. However, adult female terrapins nest in coastal uplands, and hatchling terrapins use upland habitats following nest emergence. In these upland areas, hatchlings are particularly vulnerable to mortality risks from coastal land management activities such as mowing and tilling. From 2019 to 2021, we used small tracking devices to monitor hatchling movements and habitat use at a wildlife refuge in Rhode Island. When hatchlings emerged from nests in late summer and early fall, we attached a radio transmitter and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag (n=46) or only …

From Catch To Consumption: Food Security Dynamics In An Indonesian Fishing Community, Nicole Roberts
From Catch To Consumption: Food Security Dynamics In An Indonesian Fishing Community, Nicole Roberts
Open Access Master's Theses
Food and livelihood security are key concerns for coastal communities in Indonesia as local and global drivers threaten fisheries across the archipelago. However, the focus of fisheries management and conservation on fish production excludes important aspects of the fish food system such as local economies, relationships, and cultures. For management and conservation policy to address food insecurity and marine resource declines, there is a need to understand local trade and consumption. In this study, we use value chain analysis and a “fish as food” framework to investigate the links between fish production, distribution, and consumption in an Indonesian fishing community …
Transtheoretical Model For Exercise: Measure Redevelopment And Assessing The Role Of Barriers In A Diverse Population, Kathleen Monahan
Transtheoretical Model For Exercise: Measure Redevelopment And Assessing The Role Of Barriers In A Diverse Population, Kathleen Monahan
Open Access Master's Theses
Despite its well-documented success in differentiating stage of change (SOC) for readiness for regular exercise among primarily White populations, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) exercise constructs have shown inconsistent results in understudied populations, such as Black and Hispanic/Latinx adults (Spencer et al., 2006). This cross-sectional study attempts to understand this trend by considering barriers to regular exercise among these populations. This study describes the development and validation of a novel barriers construct, as well as adapted constructs of Self-Efficacy (SE) and Decisional Balance (DB) within the TTM framework. Black and Hispanic/Latinx adults (n = 450) were recruited to complete this study. …

A Phylogenomic Approach To Explore Photosynthethic Stramenopile Evolution, Kristina Xenia Terpis
Open Access Master's Theses
Stramenopiles, Alveolates, and Rhizaria (SAR) are environmentally ubiquitous and form one of the most genetically diverse groups of eukaryotes on earth. Combined, these phyla encompass nearly half of all known eukaryotic genomic diversity. Stramenopiles comprise both non-photosynthetic taxa including important pathogens of animals and plants such as the gastric parasite Blastocystis and oomycetes like Phytophthora, the causative agent of the Irish Potato Famine. Additionally, photosynthetic members from the Phylum Ochrophyta, like the charismatic seaweeds such as giant kelp, create important ecosystems while diverse microbial phytoplankton including diatoms are fundamental to biogeochemical cycles and form the base of the food …
Influence Of Sex On Lower Limb Skeletal Muscle Oxidative Capacity And Muscle Diffusion In Endurance Trained Individuals, Lotte Black
Open Access Master's Theses
Near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive methodology that allows in vivo measurement of the skeletal muscle tissue metabolism. Recently, a novel, of short duration, NIRS-based approach, based on a brief set of muscle contractions followed by a series of repeated intermittent arterial occlusions, has been validated to determine the skeletal muscle oxygen consumption (mV̇ O2) recovery rate constant (k, min-1), which is proportional to the muscle oxidative capacity. However, since its relatively recent introduction, the validity of this approach in investigating the difference in lower limb muscle oxidative capacity between female and male …

Part of the mandate of educational institutions, particularly State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) is to provide various forms of community, public, and volunteer services that contribute to the country’s social and economic development, hence the emergence of extension programs facilitated by the academe. Considered a novel concept is the academe-led participatory extension program such as the DOST-PCAARRD’s Science and Technology Community-Based for Inclusive Development (STC4iD) Program. This program introduces new community organizing (CO) perspectives in the geographically, economically, and socially disadvantaged areas (GESDA) of the Philippines. Hence, there is much to be learned about how academe-led CO can be instrumental …

OBJECTIVES: Cuncaicha, a rockshelter site in the southern Peruvian Andes, has yielded archaeological evidence for human occupation at high elevation (4,480 masl) during the Terminal Pleistocene (12,500–11,200 cal BP), Early Holocene (9,500–9,000 cal BP), and later periods. One of the excavated human burials (Feature 15‐06), corresponding to a middle‐aged female dated to ~8,500 cal BP, exhibits skeletal osteoarthritic lesions previously proposed to reflect habitual loading and specialized crafting labor. Three small tools found in association with this burial are hypothesized to be associated with precise manual dexterity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we tested this functional hypothesis through the application of …
