Studying The Effects Of Increased Seawater Temperature On Symbiodinium Within The Coral Species Pocillopora Damicornis (Linnaeus, 1758)., Jade Matzen Jan 2021

Studying The Effects Of Increased Seawater Temperature On Symbiodinium Within The Coral Species Pocillopora Damicornis (Linnaeus, 1758)., Jade Matzen

Theses & ETDs

Global warming continues to impact biomes. One such system that is heavily influenced by global warming are marine ecosystems and more specifically, the coral reefs that provide shelters for more than 25% of all marine species. Through the use of microscopy, the Symbiodinium within these corals can be examined and quantified to see how the thermal fluctuations affect them. For the current study, Pocillopora damicornis was selected as it is commonly found in tropical waters in the Indo-Pacific region and is a reef-building coral. Corals were fragmented and separated into six tanks, pairs were labeled as either the control, temperature …

Water Is Life: Law, Systemic Racism, And Water Security In Indian Country, Heather Tanana, Julie Combs, Aila Hoss Jan 2021

Water Is Life: Law, Systemic Racism, And Water Security In Indian Country, Heather Tanana, Julie Combs, Aila Hoss

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The 21st Century has been marked by significant advancements in technology, from travel to Mars and self-driving cars to smartphones and bitcoin. And yet, at the same time, hundreds of thousands of Native Americans live without access to safe, clean and reliable drinking water. By some estimates, 48% of households on Indian reservations do not have clean water or adequate sanitation. This lack of access has been highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic, but it is not a new issue. Native American communities have long suffered inequities stemming from colonization and perpetrated by federal policy. While the pandemic has devastated many …

Utilizing Video Education To Improve Self-Care In Heart Failure Population At Home, Adrienne Wharry Jan 2021

Utilizing Video Education To Improve Self-Care In Heart Failure Population At Home, Adrienne Wharry

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Abstract

This quality improvement project was implemented to improve self-care in home health patients using video education provided on the tablet-based monitoring system. Heart failure is a chronic, progressive disease with high hospital readmission rates. However, consistent use of self-care behaviors improves patient quality of life and reduces hospital readmission rates in heart failure patients. Literature has shown that continued self-care education is essential for the success of the heart failure patient. The use of Bluetooth tablet systems for home health care and monitoring has expanded in recent years. The Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) was administered to heart …

Psxii-19 Urine Metabolomics Analysis Associated With Feed Efficiency On Crossbred Steers During The Growing And Finishing Period On Forage- And Concentrate- Based Diets., Virginia M. Artegoitia, John Newman, Ronald M. Lewis, Andrew P. Foote, Harvey C. Freetly

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A discovery project to identify non‐invasive biomarkers that can detect subtle metabolic discrepancies for cattle feed efficiency was performed using untargeted and targeted urine metabolomics by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Individual feed intake and body weight gain were measured in crossbred steers (n = 80) on a forage-based growing ration (stage-1) followed by a high-concentrate diet finishing ration (stage- 2). Urine was collected on study days 0, 21, 42, 63, and 83 for each dietary stage. In total, 28 steers with the greatest and the least average daily-gain (ADG) within 0.32 SD of the mean of dry-matter-intake (DMI) were used. …

Unboxing The Japanese Sojourning Mom’S Pediatric-Going Experience: A Phenomenological Study Of Culturally And Linguistically Appropriate Health Services, Carolyn Oldham

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

This study explores how twelve former Lexington-area Japanese sojourning mothers define culturally and linguistically appropriate services and how culture, gender and language shaped their health care beliefs, behaviors and experiences in pediatric settings. It is a naturalistic, pragmatic line of inquiry born in collaboration with Japanese sojourning moms across cups of matcha 末茶 and mugicha 麦茶. Framed by constructivist and intersectionality research lenses, this phenomenological study seeks to understand how study participants perceived the cultural and linguistic appropriateness of their interactions with Lexington-area pediatric offices and to begin to ascertain the meanings they created based on their subjective experiences. Its …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Silver(I) Cyanoximates Against Streptococcus Mutans Ua159 Planktonic Growth And Biofilm Formation, Sarah Hameer Jan 2021

Antimicrobial Activity Of Silver(I) Cyanoximates Against Streptococcus Mutans Ua159 Planktonic Growth And Biofilm Formation, Sarah Hameer

Honors Program Theses

Streptococcus mutans is identified as the causative agent of human dental caries, with biofilm formation serving as its most important virulence factor. Biofilms are typically more challenging to treat than planktonic or free-floating bacteria, adding to the already challenging issue of antibiotic resistance. This has led to an increased need for the discovery of alternative antibacterial compounds other than antibiotics. Among these compounds, silver(I) cyanoximates have been demonstrated to have antibacterial activity against a variety of microorganisms, specifically those that colonize in-dwelling medical devices. To assess the antibacterial properties of two silver(I) cyanoximate compounds, silver(I) nitrosodicyanomethanide (Ag(ACO)) and silver(I)α-oximido-(2-benzoyl)acetonitrile (Ag(BCO)), …

Elementary English Language Arts Demonstration Classrooms: Professional Development In Action, Danielle Hamilton

Ed.D. Dissertations

Illiteracy impacts the society of the United States socially, economically, physically and mentally. The inability to read has been linked to grim outcomes such as poverty, criminal activity, and poor health. By 2020, the term science of reading had gained traction in the educational realm rather than being isolated knowledge in the cognitive psychological research field. Even though research has shown the most effective methods for teaching reading, teachers in the United States were not aware of the convergent scientific evidence. School districts have the responsibility and moral imperative to provide effective professional development for elementary teachers to instruct students …

Customers visit restaurants for varying reasons ranging from utilitarian – to satisfy hunger – to hedonistic – displaying cultural capital (Bourdieu, 1984) more recently theorized as culinary capital (Naccarato & Lebesco, 2012). Restaurants are even more significant in the new ‘experience economy’ (Pine & Gilmore, 1998) where lunch or dinner are conceptualized as ‘meal experiences.’ There is widespread acceptance of the pivotal role (about 33% of tourist spend) that food now plays in the tourism product of any country (Quigley et al., 2019).

Exploring How The Head Teachers As Street-Level Bureaucrats Influence The Implementation Of Competency-Based Curriculum In Kenya., Gordon Odhiambo Okumu

Master of Education

Policy reform initiatives in Kenya, including educational policy reforms, fail to achieve their intended objectives. Written and intended policies are of excellent standards, but they fail to achieve their goals because of implementation pitfalls. The purpose of this study was to explore how the headteachers as Street-Level Bureaucrats (SLB) influence the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) policy. The study employed a case study approach for in-depth inquiry of the problem. A concurrent mixed-method design where the researcher collected both QUAL and Quan data for analysis. Descriptive statistics was used to describe quantitative data while narrative thematic and descriptions for qualitative …

Aging And Gender In The Tsimane’: Differences In Energy Expenditure, Physical Activity, And Horticultural Work, Daniel Kruse Cummings Jan 2021

Aging And Gender In The Tsimane’: Differences In Energy Expenditure, Physical Activity, And Horticultural Work, Daniel Kruse Cummings

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to measure and explain age- and sex-related differences in energy expenditure, physical activity, and patterns of horticultural work, in the Tsimane’, a subsistence forager-horticulturalist population from the Bolivian Amazon. Changes in the way energy is used with advancing age has important implications for the tradeoffs negotiated within the aging body as it partitions increasingly limited energy among competing life functions. It is guided by a theoretical framework which posits the co-evolution of the unique suite of fast and slow human life history traits, cooperative production of resources, and ageand sex-specific schedules of growth, production, …

Organophosphate Pesticide Dose Estimation From Spot And 24-Hr Urine Samples Collected From Children In An Agricultural Community, Carly Hyland, Katherine Kogut, Robert B. Gunier, Rosemary Castorina, Cynthia Curl, Brenda Eskenazi, Asa Bradman

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Spot urine samples are often used to assess exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides in place of “gold standard” 24-hr samples, which are cumbersome to collect. Assessment of non-persistent chemicals using spot urine samples may result in exposure misclassification that could bias epidemiological analyses towards the null. Few studies have examined the validity of measurements of urinary metabolites in spot samples to estimate daily OP dose or the potential implications of reliance on spot samples for risk assessments.

Objective: Examine the validity of using first morning void (FMV) and random non-FMV urine samples to estimate cumulative 24-hr OP pesticide dose …

In-Store Marketing Campaign To Promote The Purchase Of Healthy Foods And Beverages At Convenience Stores In Rural Kentucky, Brynnan Nicole Jacobs Dunaway

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

The prevalence of obesity is greater in rural communities, and current health promotion interventions have not shown broad positive impacts on dietary patterns in these areas. Focusing community-based efforts on unconventional food retailers is a unique avenue to encourage healthier food choices in rural populations. This study used shelf-wobblers to market healthier snack and beverage items at convenience stores (n=5) in a rural Kentucky county. Selection of healthy snacks and beverages from the store inventory was conducted using the CDC Food Service Guidelines for Federal Facilities calculator. Items were sorted into four categories: meal replacement snacks, high-protein snacks, low-fat carbohydrate …

Altered Skeletal Muscle Excitation-Contraction Coupling In The R6/2 Transgenic Mouse Model For Huntington's Disease, Daniel R. Miranda

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Huntington’s disease (HD) has classically been categorized as a neurodegenerative disorder. However, the expression of the disease-causing mutated huntingtin gene in skeletal muscle may contribute to the symptoms of HD, namely those that involve involuntary muscle contraction. In the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD, we previously observed ion channel defects that could contribute to involuntary muscle contraction. Here, in R6/2 muscle we investigated the consequence of these ion channel defects on action potentials (APs), the first step in excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. We found that the ion channel defects were associated with depolarizing the baseline membrane potential during AP trains. …

A Peculiar Institution: What Brought African Slavery To The Spanish Colonial World And How Did It Evolve?, Paige Langley Jan 2021

A Peculiar Institution: What Brought African Slavery To The Spanish Colonial World And How Did It Evolve?, Paige Langley

Undergraduate Research Journal

Slavery was a bedrock component in the development of the New World. While slavery did not begin in the Western Hemisphere, it most definitely grew, developed, and evolved within it. Before the Spanish set out to colonize the New World, they had already been participating in the practice of slavery, particularly race-based slavery. Upon discovering and colonizing the West, the Spanish may have viewed the initial source of unfree labor as those indigenous populations of the areas they conquered. However, the expansion of Atlantic trade and the precious commodity of African slaves would soon be introduced to the Spanish colonial …
