2021 Faculty Bibliography

Eating disorders (EDs), particularly anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), are characterized by emotional and behavioral disturbances in eating patterns and body image that result in significant distress and functional impairment (as reported by APA, (APA dictionary of psychology, American Psychological Association, Washington, DC, 2015)). Ben-Porath and colleagues (Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy 40:115-123, 2010) have researched the effectiveness of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) day treatment program in reducing negative mood regulation and anxiety among women diagnosed with AN, BN, and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). The current study extended past research on the effectiveness of DBT day treatment …

You know things are going well when Bill Gates is talking up the potential of plant-based meat with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes. Gates even told Forbes that beyond Meat and Impossible Foods’ success has given him hope for solving meat’s climate impact.Other investors are equally excited. In just the first seven months of 2020, they invested about $1.5B in alternative protein startups (see chart below). The Good Food Institute now tracks 510 companies working on plant-based, cultivated, or fermented alternatives to animal proteins. Many of these companies are racing to make alternatives as cheap and tasty as animal …

The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta Jan 2021

The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta

Environmental Economics

In 2019, Her Majesty’s Treasury (UK) commissioned Sir Partha Dasgupta, an economist and Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University to produce an independent, global review on the Economics of Biodiversity. Sir Partha was assisted by a multi-disciplinary Advisory Panel that included representatives of public policy, science, economics and business. The Review argues that countries should de-emphasize GDP as an index of progress and instead should focus on a national Wealth measure that includes an accounting for Natural Capital. After World War II, when the world was very different from what it is now, Sir Partha argues the economic questions being faced …

Genes May Have A Big Influence On Vegetarianism, Harold Herzog Jan 2021

Genes May Have A Big Influence On Vegetarianism, Harold Herzog

Herzog - Dietary Issues

A Dutch research project found that identical twins were more similar than fraternal twins in giving up meat. This suggests that one’s genetic make-up may play a role in whether one is a vegetarian or not. The genetic effect became less influential in males than in females as they grew older.

Occurrence And Interactions Of Mycobiomes With The Anopheles Gambiae Host, Godfrey Nattoh Indinda Jan 2021

Occurrence And Interactions Of Mycobiomes With The Anopheles Gambiae Host, Godfrey Nattoh Indinda

All PhD Dissertations

Anopheles mosquitoes are colonized by diverse microorganisms that may influence hosts‟ biology and vectorial capacity. Resident Anopheles bacterial symbionts isolated from these hosts are known to influence traits such as generational fitness, survival, host seeking, and infectivity of pathogens such asPlasmodium falciparum.Eukaryotic symbionts such as fungi residing in the gut of Anopheles gambiaecould confer similar phenotypes, but are undexplored. It was hypothesized that fungi associating with Anopheles could establish a stable and generational association with these mosquitoes thereby influencing their fitness and could offer protection against malaria parasites. The objective of this study was to characterize fungalsymbionts of Anopheles gambiaeand establish …

Pharmacological Effects Of Ebselen And Other Novel Organoselenium Compounds In Vitro And In The Mouse Model Of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis, Suvidha M. Menon Jan 2021

Pharmacological Effects Of Ebselen And Other Novel Organoselenium Compounds In Vitro And In The Mouse Model Of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis, Suvidha M. Menon

Theses and Dissertations

The current era is witnessing the emergence of virulent and resistant Candida and other pathogenic strains that has led to high morbidity and mortality rates on a global scale. Drug resistance has rendered once proven potent and commonly used antifungal drugs ineffective, especially in immunocompromised patients. These reasons justify the need for identifying novel antifungal targets and thereby building the antifungal armamentarium.

Our lab has previously investigated and studied Ebselen (EB), an organoselenium compound for its antifungal mechanism and activity against Candida strains. In vitro studies have shown the growth inhibitory activity (IC50 ˜ 15 µM) for various C. albicans …

The Role Of Transcription Factor Nrf2 In The Toxicity Of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (Pfos) And Perfluorooctanoic Acid (Pfoa) In Vitro And In Vivo In Wild-Type And Nrf2 Deficient C57bl/6 Mice, Saif A. Alharthy Jan 2021

The Role Of Transcription Factor Nrf2 In The Toxicity Of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (Pfos) And Perfluorooctanoic Acid (Pfoa) In Vitro And In Vivo In Wild-Type And Nrf2 Deficient C57bl/6 Mice, Saif A. Alharthy

Theses and Dissertations

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are members of a family of compounds known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This study aimed to determine the protective role of Nrf2 against the toxicity of these agents. Nrf2-/- and wild-type astrocytes from C57BL/6 mice were exposed to PFOS (75-600µM) and PFOA (400-1000µM) for 24 hours. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Neutral Red (NR) uptake assays showed cytotoxicity being significantly greater in nrf2-/- than in the wild-type astrocytes. Concentrations of 600µM PFOS and 800µM PFOA showed significant increases in reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, and TUNEL positive cells in both cells types with significantly …

The Impact Of Individual And Contextual Factors On L2 Writing Development: The Shifts In Written Corrective Feedback During Covid-19, Jordan Gonzalez Jan 2021

The Impact Of Individual And Contextual Factors On L2 Writing Development: The Shifts In Written Corrective Feedback During Covid-19, Jordan Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

The novel COVID-19 pandemic has caused a rupture in the trajectory of education worldwide. Students, families and schools are experiencing unprecedented times and are navigating uncharted territory together in how we educate our students. In the U.S., it has been noted that the schism within education as a result of the pandemic is the biggest threat to national security (Choi, 2020), noting the importance of education within our democracy. This includes the trauma experienced by families due to deaths caused by the pandemic, the disproportionality of communities of color losing a parent (Brundage & Ramos-Callan, 2020), and the impact on …

The Perceptions Of English Language Learners On Their Level Of Preparedness To Complete College Courses Taught In English: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Drawing Upon Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, John Blicharz Jan 2021

The Perceptions Of English Language Learners On Their Level Of Preparedness To Complete College Courses Taught In English: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Drawing Upon Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, John Blicharz

Theses and Dissertations

As the English language learner (ELL) population in the United States continues to grow and the number of non-native speakers entering institutes of higher education increases, there is a growing need to shift the paradigm on how universities serve ELLs. While there is a body of literature to support K-12 literacy, there is little to support college ELLs. As if the lack of research was not enough, ELLs are suffering on standardized tests, college placement tests are waning, and ELLs are not receiving proper advisement, thus suffering in standard English composition courses and failing out. Drawing upon the framework of …

The Emerging Science Of Wellness In The College Writing Curriculum, Peggy Suzuki Jan 2021

The Emerging Science Of Wellness In The College Writing Curriculum, Peggy Suzuki

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the college writing curriculum – and indeed any educational program---would benefit from an emphasis on human wellness and the arts. Wellness consists of one’s emotional, social, spiritual, physical, intellectual, and vocational well-being. Additionally, students’ environmental circumstances, like home life, finances, diet, exercise, and work obligations play a huge role in balancing personal health, especially in marginalized communities. Since one’s physiological and psychological connection impacts one’s identity and health, improving writing in the classroom requires holistic and creative approaches for rewiring individual thinking. I draw from positive psychology, where concepts like complex optimism and positive emotions nurture …

This study involved two phases of data collection including surveying these students, and then following up with a focus group interview (Creswell, 2015). The 19-item questionnaire asked about perceptions of tutoring effectiveness, motivations for tutoring, and overall experiences with tutoring. Interview questions were informed by the results of the survey in order to further elicit student perspectives and enrich the overall description …

The Role Of The Economy In Changing The Achievement Gap Between Different Racial And Ethnic 8th Grade Students’ English Language Arts Test Scores, Dominique Limprevil-Divers Jan 2021

The Role Of The Economy In Changing The Achievement Gap Between Different Racial And Ethnic 8th Grade Students’ English Language Arts Test Scores, Dominique Limprevil-Divers

Theses and Dissertations

There is a large achievement gap in literacy between Black and White students in the United States that has been found to be mostly due to both differing learning opportunities as well as to income levels. Meanwhile, much of the research on academic performance has focused on race with less attention on the income of the school neighborhood zip code as a mediating factor in test outcomes for racial/ethnic students. This research investigated trends in English Language Arts test scores compared to income in the surrounding communities among New York City schools’ racial/ethnic groups of middle school students; also, whether …

Algorithmic Parenting, Eldar Haber, Tammy Harel Ben Shahar

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Growing up in today’s world involves an increasing amount of interaction with technology. The rise in availability, accessibility, and use of the internet, along with social norms that encourage internet connection, make it nearly impossible for children to avoid online engagement. The internet undoubtedly benefits children socially and academically and mastering technological tools at a young age is indispensable for opening doors to valuable opportunities. However, the internet is risky for children in myriad ways. Parents and lawmakers are especially concerned with the tension between important advantages and risks technology bestows on children.

New technological developments in artificial intelligence are …

Assessing And Improving Knowledge Of Medical Decision-Making Capacity, Samantha J. Zohr Jan 2021

Assessing And Improving Knowledge Of Medical Decision-Making Capacity, Samantha J. Zohr

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Clinical judgments of capacity have implications for the rights of the individual being assessed. While supported decision-making is recommended, it is not clear whether laypeople have sufficient knowledge to advocate for maximizing the autonomy of the person they assist. This study developed and evaluated a brief, computer-based intervention to increase knowledge about decision-making capacity, using a Solomon four-group design. A convenience sample of 160 participants completed the study via an online survey platform. Knowledge was assessed with a test designed for this study. A 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA found no pre-test sensitization, F(1, 156) = 0.09, p = .77, …

Mental Health Service Utilization, Knowledge, Stigma, And Protective Factors In A College Student Sample: The Influence Of Racial Categories And Student-Athlete Status, Jasmine M. Morigney

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Students of color and student-athletes undergo unique stressors in college, such as discrimination and time constraints, that impact their mental health needs. They have shown more mental health stigma and less service utilization. This study explored these variables and groups using secondary data analyses from the 2019-2020 Healthy Minds Study (HMS). The current study hypothesized that utilization would be associated with stigma, knowledge, and resilience. Additionally, student-athletes and students of color would report less utilization and more stigma and resilience. Results indicated that students of color reported no difference in utilization and less stigma and resilience than White students. Student-athletes …
