Testing A Sociocultural Model Of Body Image In Women Athletes With Disabilities, Brooke R. Lamphere Jan 2021

Testing A Sociocultural Model Of Body Image In Women Athletes With Disabilities, Brooke R. Lamphere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Evidence suggests that athletes and people with disabilities (PWD) experience multiple body images that change relative to their social context (e.g., Petrie & Greenleaf, 2012). The powerful influence of social factors on body image and disordered eating in women athletes is well-documented (e.g., Schaefer, et al., 2015; Fitzsimmons-Craft et al., 2014), as is the centrality of the body in the lived experience of athletes and PWD (Behel & Rybarczyk, 2012; Galli et al., 2016); yet, limited research has explored the effects of social factors on body image in athletes with disabilities (i.e., AWD; e.g., Galli et al., 2016; Sousa et …

Lack Of Access To Quality Healthcare In Peru, Spencer Hart Jan 2021

Lack Of Access To Quality Healthcare In Peru, Spencer Hart

Ballard Brief

The current healthcare systems in Peru leave millions without easy access to medical attention, many of whom are also living in poverty. It is difficult for the governing bodies to include everyone in healthcare coverage plans and make the necessary medical resources accessible. The lack of qualified medical professionals. in part due to a migration of doctors out of the country to seek better opportunities elsewhere, also contributes to the problem. As can be expected, these and other factors lead to greater amounts of illness and deaths than other countries that have more developed healthcare. These problems have also caused …

Effect Of A Ketogenic Diet On Glycemic Control In Type 2 Diabetics, Steven Moore Jan 2021

Effect Of A Ketogenic Diet On Glycemic Control In Type 2 Diabetics, Steven Moore

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

With the increasing rate of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the serious complications associated with this disease, there continues to be controversy surrounding the most effective way to manage glycemic control in this population. The intention of this meta-analysis is to determine the effect of a ketogenic diet as a first-line treatment option on glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients. Effectiveness was determined by comparing the ketogenic diet to other popular diets recommended to diabetics by practitioners following guidelines set forth by the American Diabetes Association. Several high-quality studies were selected utilizing PubMed, Dynamed plus, …

The Impacts Of Terrorism On Maternal Health In Afghanistan, Kyla Rocanello-Snow Jan 2021

The Impacts Of Terrorism On Maternal Health In Afghanistan, Kyla Rocanello-Snow

Global Sustainable Development Projects

Terrorism is both directly and indirectly harmful to maternal health. Terrorist attacks targeted at healthcare workers, hospitals and maternity wards are a direct impediment of maternal healthcare. Other terrorist activity and conflict produce overall instability, aggravating insecurity in the country. Attacks that disrupt functions within a community and a country at large indirectly impact maternal health as they target specific social determinants of health, including infrastructure for transportation, education, and healthcare. Terrorism and the influence of Islamic militia groups in Afghanistan continue to threaten the power and stability of the national government, making it difficult for policy enactment to improve …

Reducing The Obesity Epidemic Globally, Kimberli Pepper Jan 2021

Reducing The Obesity Epidemic Globally, Kimberli Pepper

Global Sustainable Development Projects

The consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has caused a global obesity epidemic that has several health implications such as type two diabetes, fatty liver disease, kidney failure, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, multiple types of cancer, and pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases (Johnson et al., 2013; Malik and Hu, 2015; Romieu et al., 2017; Softic et al., 2016). The prevalence of obesity in the United States was evaluated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and reported that USA was at 39.8 percent, which is a significant risk factor for the development of type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (Mejia and …

From Stigma To Dignity? Transforming Workfare With Universal Basic Income And A Federal Job Guarantee, Lynn D. Lu Jan 2021

From Stigma To Dignity? Transforming Workfare With Universal Basic Income And A Federal Job Guarantee, Lynn D. Lu

Publications and Research

As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a catastrophic toll on lives and livelihoods across the United States, the harshest impact of the unpredictable virus has disproportionately fallen with foreseeable accuracy on Black, immigrant, poor, and elderly people, who are most likely to live and work in close contact with others and to have less access to health care or emergency savings. The speed and severity of the viral contagion has rendered devastatingly, undeniably visible the vast, racial gap between those with reliable health care, child care, housing, nutrition, household wealth, and income and those without, but that gap was already widening …

No. 53: Changing Priorities In Urban Food Security Research: A Bibliometric Analysis, Bruce Frayne, Truzaar Dordi, Cameron Mccordic, Naomi Sunu, Clare Williamson

Hungry Cities Partnership

The study of urban food security has evolved dramatically over the past few decades. This evolution has been punctuated, and catalyzed, by insights into the dynamic transformation of food systems in cities across the Global South. The evolution of this field provides an important vantage point for understanding both the dynamic transformation of urban food systems as well as the lens through which that transformation has been understood. This investigation of the field adopted a bibliometric methodology, blending quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques, to assess the dynamic evolution of the literature over time. The methodology included a quantitative analysis of …

No. 51: State-Led Localization Of Food Provisioning And Food Security In Urban China, Taiyang Zhong, Steffanie Scott, Zhenzhong Si, Jonathan Crush Jan 2021

No. 51: State-Led Localization Of Food Provisioning And Food Security In Urban China, Taiyang Zhong, Steffanie Scott, Zhenzhong Si, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

Food localization has been extensively studied and advocated in Western countries, focusing on its oppositional stance to food system globalization, long food supply chains and agribusiness, the disconnect between producers and consumers, and a desire to reconnect urban consumers with small farmers in the hinterland of cities. More recently, these localization models have been taken up by international agencies and others and “exported” to the Global South. Rapid urbanization in the Global South has led to a major and growing crisis of food insecurity, which these models and approaches are ill-equipped to address. Hence, it is important to examine other …

No. 50: Food Security And Poverty Reduction Programmes In A Cape Town Community: A Qualitative Study, Sarah Duncan Jan 2021

No. 50: Food Security And Poverty Reduction Programmes In A Cape Town Community: A Qualitative Study, Sarah Duncan

Hungry Cities Partnership

Despite increased engagement with public programmes, low-income urban South African communities continue to experience high levels of food insecurity. More needs to be known about why progress in poverty alleviation and food security has plateaued (Shisana et al 2013). This discussion paper is based on a qualitative study that investigated how food insecure female-headed households in a Cape Town community made use of state (national) and local (government, NGO and community-led) poverty reduction programmes and social networks in their pursuit of food security (Duncan 2016). It revealed the study participants as skilled survivors who carefully navigated their environment, using both …

No. 52: Assessing Supermarket Patronage In Matola, Mozambique, Cameron Mccordic, Bruce Frayne, Naomi Sunu Jan 2021

No. 52: Assessing Supermarket Patronage In Matola, Mozambique, Cameron Mccordic, Bruce Frayne, Naomi Sunu

Hungry Cities Partnership

As an indicator of a broader nutrition transition, the supermarketization of urban food systems in the Global South has become a growing area of research interest. While the rising dominance of supermarkets in urban food systems has been noted in several primate cities in the Global South, there have been few investigations into the spatial and demographic characteristics that may govern the patronage of supermarkets in smaller secondary cities. This paper assesses the supermarketization trend via an investigation of supermarket patronage in a secondary city through a 2014 household survey of Matola, Mozambique. Using a combination of descriptive statistics and …

Highlighting How The Structure Of Marine Bacterial Laminarinase Can Improve Biogeochemical Cycling During Global Climate Change, Heidi Hellenbrand, Rachel Harris, Chino Villanueva Jan 2021

Highlighting How The Structure Of Marine Bacterial Laminarinase Can Improve Biogeochemical Cycling During Global Climate Change, Heidi Hellenbrand, Rachel Harris, Chino Villanueva

Protein Modeling Reports

Marine bacterial laminarinase cuts polysaccharides in the process of remineralization, a key process in the ocean biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. We reviewed the protein model of 6JH5 in Jmol to highlight the important areas of the model that relate to thermostability and function and the effects of global climate change on the protein. The catalytic cleft of Glu135 and Glu140 was vital to the depolymerization mechanism. Substrate chain positions 130-143, specifically Trp130 being used for recognition, were important to the proficiency of the structure. The calcium ion on the opposite side of the β-sheet from catalytic cleft increased its degrading …

Food Insecurity In Ny State. Solutions To Address The Multifaceted Problem, Janine Jurkowski, Tomoko Udo, Angela Hackstadt Jan 2021

Food Insecurity In Ny State. Solutions To Address The Multifaceted Problem, Janine Jurkowski, Tomoko Udo, Angela Hackstadt

Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection

Food is an essential determinant of health; the challenges in meeting nutritional needs for all are complex. Food insecurity involves the availability of enough safe and nutritious food, having access to that food, and being able to effectively utilize that food for household consumption. Availability has to do with the supply chain, which is affected directly by the social and physical environment. Access is related to the social and economic factors that determine individuals and households’ socioeconomic opportunities. Utilization has to do with having the ability, storage and tools for food preparation. Food insecurity is a growing social problem with …

Closing The Health Disparity Gap In U.S. Immigrant Communities In The Era Of Covid-19: A Narrative Review, Dina Refki, Rukhsana Ahmed, Jeanette Altarriba

Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have significant impacts on social determinants of health. Immigrant communities often bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis because of the immigration experience, which serves as an additional social determinant of health. Evidence suggests that these communities are hard hit by economic instability, food insecurities, isolation, lack of safe housing and safe neighborhoods, environmental dynamics that cut them off from systems of support, lack of sufficient access to educational tools that have become critical in remote and digital learning, limited access to health and healthcare resources, low health literacy, and restricted access to culturally and …

Pediatric Caregiver Health Literacy: Comparing Perceptions Of Pediatricians And Nurse Practitioners, Kirbey Flora

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Throughout life, most people will interact with the healthcare system to manage information in order to make healthcare decisions. Health literacy is the ability to comprehend health information needed to make healthcare decisions. Pediatric patients often do not have a voice in their healthcare decisions; therefore, their health outcomes may be affected by the health literacy of their caregivers. In addition, the child’s health may be impacted by the ability of the healthcare team to provide appropriate health education. The purpose of this honors thesis was to determine pediatric healthcare providers’ perception of health literacy in their practices. Qualitative data …
