Antibodies against the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E6 oncoprotein are promising biomarkers for the early detection of HPV-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC). Standard serologic testing is challenging in underserved regions with high HPV+OPSCC incidence. Dried blood spot (DBS) cards offer a low-resource alternative but remain unevaluated for HPV antibody detection. A total of 25 OPSCC patients who provided paired serum (venipuncture) and DBS (finger-prick) samples were recruited from the University of Kentucky. HPV16 antibodies (L1, E1, E2, E4, E6, E7) were measured using multiplex serology, quantified as median fluorescence intensity (MFI) and dichotomized using established cutoffs. Correlation between …

Increasing attention is being devoted to the study of phenotypic plasticity in social environments. However, much remains unknown about the selection pressures driving the evolution of social plasticity, as well as the pathways by which social plasticity may facilitate or constrain feedback between ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Here, we explore these questions using quantitative genetic models, providing general results regarding the causes of selection on social reaction norms, as well as their consequences for adaptive microevolution in fluctuating environments. We model the fitness effects of character states expressed across spatially heterogeneous microhabitats, with variation in the degree to which trait …

Female sex is associated with higher incidence and risk of dementia. Estrogen may rep-resent one important mechanism contributing to the increase in incidence rates. In thisreview, we synthesize narratively the evidence for associations between estrogen—across the life course from menarche to menopause, estrogen-containing hormonalcontraception and hormone replacement therapies, and pregnancy—with potentialmodifiable risk factors for dementia. These include education, hearing loss, traumaticbrain injury, hypertension, alcohol use, obesity, smoking, depression, physical inactiv-ity, diabetes, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, social isolation, air pollution, and untreated visual loss, as well as apolipoprotein E ε4. In addition, evidence is sum-marized for associations with sleep, diet, and stress. …

Prahita, Power, And Partnership (Ppp) : Navigating Community-Based Welfare And Clientelism In Myanmar’S Poverty Reduction, Comparative Analysis Of Myanmar And Thailand, Mai Tam Aung Seinn

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

Myanmar’s persistent poverty has been deeply rooted in its current political unrest, decades of poor governance, and entrenched clientelism – a system where informal patronage networks exchange material benefits for political loyalty, sidelining equitable welfare delivery (Jones, 2014, Berenschot and Mulder, 2019). The serial issues have now developed into a poly-crisis which consists of a confluence of economic collapse, political instability, and disasters like COVID-19, cyclones, earthquakes, and armed conflicts (UNDP, 2025b). Therefore, the study aims to synthesize Myanmar’s complex interplay between grassroots welfare systems, power dynamics, and external partnerships within Myanmar’s fragile context and proposes to comprehensively investigate poverty …

Slimmer’S Paralysis In The Era Of Glp-1 Therapy: A Review Of Recent Cases, Nidhin John, Amayrani Sanchez, Naomie Jean Nov 2025

Slimmer’S Paralysis In The Era Of Glp-1 Therapy: A Review Of Recent Cases, Nidhin John, Amayrani Sanchez, Naomie Jean

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed obesity management by producing substantial and sustained weight loss. However, rapid weight reduction has been increasingly associated with peroneal neuropathy, or “slimmer’s paralysis.” This review summarizes the pathophysiology, recent case reports, and clinical implications of this emerging complication. Slimmer’s paralysis arises indirectly through loss of protective adipose tissue around the fibular head and nutritional deficiencies, rather than direct neurotoxic effects of GLP-1 agents. Recognition is critical, as timely intervention with conservative or surgical management can restore function. Clinicians should maintain vigilance in patients undergoing rapid pharmacologic weight …

Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths and ranks as the sixth most prevalent cancer type globally. NAFLD or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and its more severe manifestation, NASH or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), pose a significant global health concern, affecting approximately 20%-25% of the population. The increased prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and MASH is parallel to the increasing rates of obesity-associated metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and fatty liver diseases. MASH can progress to MASH-related HCC (MASH-HCC) in about 2% of cases each year, influenced by various factors such …

We aimed to investigate the relative efficacy of feeding different bile acids in preventing PNALD in neonatal pigs. Newborn pigs given total parenteral nutrition (TPN) combined with minimal enteral feeding of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) or increasing doses of obeticholic acid (OCA) for 19 days. Enteral OCA (5 and 15 mg/kg), but not CDCA (30 mg/kg) reduced blood cholestasis markers compared to TPN controls and increased bile acids in the gallbladder and intestine. Major bile acids in the liver and distal intestine were CDCA, HCA, HDCA, and OCA, and their relative proportions were increased by the type of bile acid (CDCA …

The development of medical knowledge follows specific principles. These also apply to abusive head trauma. The seminal literature from the early 20th century is based on earlier research from Europe, which is fundamental to understand the evolution of understanding and nomenclature of abusive head trauma. A review of original medical literature on intracranial injuries in children, published in German, English, and French, was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar for articles before 1950. The primary search focused on subdural hemorrhages and pachymeningitis in children, followed by a snowball search of references. Full texts of available manuscripts were reviewed. Primary literature …

POLG2 encodes an accessory subunit in DNA polymerase gamma that is required for mitochondrial DNA synthesis. Monoallelic pathogenic variants in POLG2 are associated primarily with progressive external ophthalmoplegia with mitochondrial DNA deletions, autosomal dominant type 4 (PEOA4, MIM #610131). We report a rare case of severe infantile hepatocerebral syndrome associated with biallelic variants in POLG2. The proband, a 5-week-old female infant, presented with seizures and acute liver failure. Extensive metabolic workup, including untargeted metabolomics analysis and elevated plasma growth differentiation factor 15, was suggestive of mitochondrial dysfunction. Rapid trio genome sequencing identified compound heterozygous variants, a likely pathogenic variant and …

Objective and methods: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) comprises a heterogeneous population of adipocytes and non-adipocyte cell types. To characterize these cellular subpopulations and their adaptation to cold, we performed single-nucleus mRNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) on interscapular BAT from mice maintained at room temperature or exposed to acute (24h) or chronic (10 days) cold (6 °C). To investigate the role of the de novo lipogenesis (DNL)-regulating transcription factor carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP), we analyzed control and brown adipocyte-specific ChREBP knockout mice.

Results: We identified different cell populations, including seven brown adipocyte subtypes with distinct metabolic profiles. One of them highly expressed ChREBP …

The high disease burden and bidirectional relationship of chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart failure (HF) and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) necessitate the need for early diagnosis of these diseases. While current screening and detection methods are recommended by CKD and CVD guidelines, their adoption in practice is low. Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) is recognized as a diagnostic marker for CKD and a prognostic marker for CKD progression, HF and CVD outcomes, therefore albuminuria changes have been accepted as a surrogate outcome for kidney and cardiovascular endpoints. Furthermore, clinical trials investigating guideline-directed medical therapies have shown that uACR reductions are accompanied …

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age is a complex perinatal syndrome associated with increased neonatal morbidity, mortality, and impaired childhood growth and neurodevelopment. Current classifications rely primarily on birthweight, which does not capture the heterogeneity of the condition nor predict long-term health outcomes. Here we aim to identify and characterize distinct small for gestational age subgroups and assess their neonatal and early childhood health trajectories.

OBJECTIVE: To refine the classification of small for gestational age by identifying subgroups based on maternal, fetal, and environmental factors and evaluating their associations with neonatal morbidity, growth, and neurodevelopment at age 2.
