Home Economics And Food Literacy: An Investigation Into The Factors Influencing The Effective Delivery Of Food Literacy Curricula In Irish Post Primary Schools As Perceived By Key Stakeholders, Aisling Geraghty
Dissertations
In 2018 the new Junior Cycle specification for home economics was introduced. This year also saw the recommendation by the Irish State to make home economics compulsory for all Junior Cycle students. Home economics is a multifaceted, inter disciplinary subject that seeks to empower students with the skills to cultivate reflective, critical decision-making abilities they require to deal with practical perennial problems. Food literacy exists as a key contextual strand to home economics, and to this new Junior Cycle curriculum in particular. This study seeks to identify influences, both positive and negative, that impact on the effective delivery of food …
Adopting A Systematic Approach To Tasting Cider Within The Irish Craft Cider Industry, Richie Brady
Adopting A Systematic Approach To Tasting Cider Within The Irish Craft Cider Industry, Richie Brady
Dissertations
Craft cider-makers produce less than 1% of Irish cider which is a significantly smaller percentage than craft producers in other beverage markets. This study contextualises Irish cider’s importance by exploring its rich history in Gaelic and Georgian Ireland. It then examines how that importance is not reflected in today’s market and posits that introducing a new systematic approach to tasting will enable cider to be viewed beyond what many see as a cheap, simple summer drink. A systematic approach to tasting is a structured and repeatable method of describing taste using a lexicon of agreed words. Unlike other drinks, such …

A recent surge in the use and abuse of diverse prescribed psychotic and illicit drugs necessitates the surveillance of drug residues in source water and the associated ecological impacts of chronic exposure to the aquatic organism. Thirty-six psychotic and illicit drug residues were determined in discharged wastewater from two centralized municipal wastewater treatment facilities and two wastewater receiving creeks for seven consecutive days in Kentucky. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae were exposed to the environmental relevant mixtures of all drug residues, all illicit drugs, and all prescribed psychotic drugs. The extracted RNA from fish homogenates was sequenced, and differentially …

The potassium solubilizing biofertilizer based on selected potassium solubilizing bacteria (KSB) can facilitate availability of potassium in primary silicate minerals containing potassium to be absorbed by the plants. The key to successful application of biofertilizer in showing positive effects on inoculated plants is the selection of a carrier material that can guarantee viability of inoculants during shelf life before being applied in the field. The purpose of this study was to determine viability of three selected KSB isolates which were formulated in a mixture of K-feldspar (KF), rice straw compost (RSC), rice husk biochar (RHB), and Aleksandrov liquid medium (ALM) …

Reducing Hospital Readmissions Using The Self Care Deficit Theory, Katherine Decillis Taylor
Reducing Hospital Readmissions Using The Self Care Deficit Theory, Katherine Decillis Taylor
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
This project aims to reduce inpatient hospital readmission occurrences within 30 days of an initial inpatient hospitalization. Patients at high risk for readmission may have deficits in their ability to meet self-care needs after discharge. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory provided the theoretical framework for the project. The education provided by this project can teach nurses to identify patients who may be at high risk for readmission. Once identified, nurses can advocate for the patient’s needs.

Hydration And Nutrition During Labor, Muna Abdi, Katie Cooper
Hydration And Nutrition During Labor, Muna Abdi, Katie Cooper
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Purpose: Historically women have birthed in their own homes. As birth moved to the hospital, concerns surrounding gastric aspiration following general anesthesia led to restrictive intake policies for laboring women. Current professional recommendations vary regarding nutritional intake in labor. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there are differences in maternal outcomes when different forms of hydration and nutrition are used during labor. Theoretical Framework: Neuman’s Systems Model was the theoretical framework used to guide the research process. This model includes four systems (client-client, environment, health, and nursing) which work together to promote holistic wellness. Methods: A thorough …

Implementing A Health And Wellness Program For Low Income Children And Their Families: A Community Outreach Program, Kailey Ann Geib, Hannah N. Moland, Emily Nicole Nelson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Low income status has been proven to have negative effects on overall health, such as increased prevalence of chronic diseases and poor childhood development (Gupta, de Wit, & McKeown, 2007). Children living in communities of this status often do not have access to healthy foods or exercise facilities in comparison to middle and upper class children (Gupta, de Wit, & McKeown, 2007). Enhancement of education on these topics has the ability to combat the risk for poor health outcomes. A health and wellness program called SMILE was created and implemented at a child care center, called Carol Mathey’s Center for …
Impact Of Relative Age On Need For Special Education Services, Leonie Giles
Impact Of Relative Age On Need For Special Education Services, Leonie Giles
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis consists of a literature review of research on a potential correlation between a student's birthdate, age upon entry into kindergarten, and the potential need for special education services while in elementary school. Results were mixed on the benefits of delaying entry into school. While results appeared contradictory at times, closer analysis indicates that benefits depend on the individual, on the presence of a disability, the gender, and socio-economic status, and on when a student is born. Students born in the months directly preceding kindergarten eligibility are at a disadvantage when compared to those born right after the cut-off …

Evaluating The Impact Of Volunteer And Facility Provided Doula Support In The Intrapartum Period On Maternal, Neonatal, And Psychosocial Outcomes In The Hospital Setting, Kayla Puent, Keirsta Marie Ragels
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Purpose: The unacceptably high maternal mortality rate in the United States has demanded a call to action for evaluation and implementation of efforts to improve both maternal and neonatal outcomes. Low-resource and low-socioeconomic populations are at a higher risk of experiencing adverse birth outcomes. Doulas have continuously been recognized as key tools in improving outcomes, but not all birthing persons have access to them. The positive impact of continuous labor support in improving outcomes is recognized by the American College of Obstetricians, American College of Nurse-Midwives, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the March of Dimes. The purpose of this …
Breastfeeding Education And Support For Marginalized Women To Increase Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Kelsea J. Rush, Leah Vogel
Breastfeeding Education And Support For Marginalized Women To Increase Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Kelsea J. Rush, Leah Vogel
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Purpose: Marginalized women have significantly lower rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration and also experience significant health disparities when compared to non-marginalized populations. Breastfeeding has positive health benefits to both mother and child and could help to reduce these disparities. The purpose of this critical appraisal of the literature was to determine the effects of additional breastfeeding education and support on breastfeeding among marginalized groups of women. Theoretical Framework: Ramona Mercer’s Maternal Role Attainment Theory was used as a framework for the literature review by following the four stages of attainment; anticipatory, formal, informal, and personal. Methods: Twenty relevant, scholarly …
Vaginal Microbiomes And Preterm Labor/Birth, Stephanie Dayl Feltman
Vaginal Microbiomes And Preterm Labor/Birth, Stephanie Dayl Feltman
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current standards of care for decreasing the incidence of preterm labor and preterm birth are not decreasing the public health burden of spontaneous preterm birth. Preterm labor and birth contribute to the high infant mortality rate in the United States and around the world. The purpose of this paper is to review and examine research articles regarding the vaginal microbiomes and their association with preterm birth and preterm labor. A better understanding of the microbiome and how it influences labor may be a key component to reducing preterm labor and birth and ultimately decrease the infant mortality rate in the …

The Effects Of Socialization On The Progression Of Dementia, Caitlyn Hagstrom, Ashley G. Heppner, Katelyn N. Kunde
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of disorders marked by a decline from baseline in memory, executive function, and other cognitive functions such as reasoning, handling complex tasks, and spatial orientation, all of which interferes with activities of daily living and independence (Larson, 2019). Current pharmaceutical management of dementia and related symptoms is limited (Press & Alexander, 2019b). As dementia progresses, the cognitive skills required to maintain social interactions and familial relationships decline, therefore affecting the perceived loneliness and isolation of the person living with dementia. This research was conducted to understand the role of socialization in the …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic disease currently affects 45%, nearly half, of all persons in the United States (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018). A systemic, cellular etiology of chronic disease has been proposed: literature supports the mechanism of a universal cell danger response (CDR) (Naviaux, 2019). The hallmark of the CDR, the shift in metabolism to anaerobic glycolysis, is initiated by altered functionality of the mitochondria (Naviaux, 2019). Current research on mitochondrial dysfunction has demonstrated that a hypoxic intervention has successfully increased longevity in mice with mitochondrial dysfunction, but such an intervention has not, to our knowledge, been attempted in humans (Jain et al., 2016). …

Within the last thirty years, in the United States alone, the number of patients receiving treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) doubled (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018b). Previous research has indicated lower quality of life in patients with ESRD and has also shown further reduced quality of life with the presence of diabetes and obesity (eg. Liu, Yeh, Weng, Bai, & Chang, 2017). The purpose of this study was to determine the existence and nature of any relationship between quality of life and comorbidities of diabetes mellitus and obesity in ESRD patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Mean quality …
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status And Poverty On African American Students With Special Needs, Royce T. Winford
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status And Poverty On African American Students With Special Needs, Royce T. Winford
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exploring the impact of socioeconomic status and poverty on African American students with special needs has shown that poverty is a global issue that has an impact on children's academic ability. In the United States, about one-quarter of all children are born into poverty. Poverty increases the likelihood of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. Stress affects children from low-income families, preventing their brains from completely developing. This thesis is a review of scholarly research on the impact of socioeconomic status on African American students with special needs and its relation to special education. Through this research, …
