The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone
The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone
Senior Honors Theses
Technology in biomechanics encompasses eight major categories: artificial optical devices, anthropometry, timing devices, electrogoniometry, electromyography, dynamometry, inertial tracking systems, and modeling and simulation. As technology improves and becomes more accessible to the general population, it becomes easier to implement biomechanical technology into sports. For each area of focus, biomechanical technology has numerous points of current application or potential application. This application has benefit in injury prevention, technique improvement, rule enforcement, performance optimization, overall health and condition analysis, sports timing, and product development and testing. This thesis examines each area in turn as well as the various tools implemented in order …

Dietary Ecology Of Alaskan Polar Bears (Ursus Maritimus) Through Time And In Response To Arctic Climate Change, Ansley S. Petherick, Joshua D. Reuther, Scott J. Shirar, Shelby Anderson, Larisa R G Desantis
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Arctic climate change poses serious threats to polar bears (Ursus maritimus) as reduced sea ice makes seal prey inaccessible and marine ecosystems undergo bottom-up reorganization. Polar bears' elongated skulls and reduced molar dentition, as compared to their sister species the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), are adaptations associated with hunting seals on sea ice and a soft, lipid-rich diet of blubber and meat. With significant declines in sea ice, it is unclear if and how polar bears may be altering their diets. Clarifying polar bear dietary responses to changing climates, both today and in the past, is critical to proper conservation …
Make Hay While The Sun Shines: Private Equity And The False Claims Act, Gregory F. Maczko
Make Hay While The Sun Shines: Private Equity And The False Claims Act, Gregory F. Maczko
Vanderbilt Law Review
For years, the federal government has used the False Claims Act to police fraud in the healthcare industry. Every year, the Department of Justice recovers billions of dollars from healthcare companies for their False Claims Act violations, both penalizing wrongdoers and providing incentives for whistleblowers to come forward. Over the past decade, however, private equity activity within the healthcare industry has increased significantly, presenting questions as to how the False Claims Act applies when a private equity firm’s portfolio company is accused of wrongdoing. This Note analyzes the ambiguity in how different courts have previously applied the False Claims Act …

The Epidemiology And Biology Of Pulmonary Metastases, William D Gerull, Varun Puri, Benjamin D Kozower
Open Access Publications
Our goal in this chapter is to explore the complex processes of metastasis and why there is a predisposition for this to occur in the lung. In addition, we aim to describe the incidence of pulmonary metastases in various contexts and based on the origin of the primary tumor. There are unique characteristics of the pulmonary system that make metastases more likely to occur in the lung than anywhere else in the body. Some of these characteristics include receiving the entire cardiac output every minute, having the densest capillary bed in the body, and being the first reservoir of most …

Experiences Of Exclusively Expressing Breast Milk For Term Infants: A Qualitative Analysis, Lisa Anders
Experiences Of Exclusively Expressing Breast Milk For Term Infants: A Qualitative Analysis, Lisa Anders
Dissertations (1934 -)
Breast milk feeding has numerous benefits for women and infants. Although positive maternal experiences with breast milk feeding impacts exclusivity, duration, and maternal mental health, most research focuses on women feeding directly at the breast. Breast milk can also be expressed and bottle-fed to the infant. This practice is encouraged in instances of maternal-infant separation or in cases of prematurity. However, there is an increasing number of women electing to feed exclusively expressed breast milk to term infants rather than feed directly at the breast. Little is known about what constitutes a positive, or salutary breastfeeding, experience in this population. …
Effectiveness Of A Postpartum Breastfeeding Protocol For Avoiding Pregnancy And Descriptive Analysis Of The Physiology Of The Postpartum Transition, Mary Schneider
Dissertations (1934 -)
Traditionally, postpartum breastfeeding women used Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods that required observation of cervical mucus and basal body temperature as indicators of return to fertility. These indicators resulted in high unintended pregnancy rates (i.e., 14-32 over 12 months of use). High pregnancy rates were due to the inaccuracy and subjectivity of those fertility indicators which required extended periods of abstinence. Ineffectiveness of NFP methods is also related to changing patterns of fertility during lactation amenorrhea (LA) and the first six menstrual cycles postpartum.Studies of a NFP protocol where women used objective urine hormone biomarkers were 92-98% effective for …
Predictive Analysis On Knee X-Ray Image And Mosquito Spectral Data, Manzur Rahman Farazi
Predictive Analysis On Knee X-Ray Image And Mosquito Spectral Data, Manzur Rahman Farazi
Dissertations (1934 -)
The aims of this dissertation are to develop predictive algorithms for twopractical applications: classification of knee osteoarthritis (OA) based on knee x-ray image and age prediction of mosquitoes based on near infrared spectra (NIRS) data. For the OA classification problem, we develop an automated algorithm that reads the pixel-wise color intensities for x-ray images and performs an OA severity classification. Identification of the region of interest (ROI) is a primary step for successful automated classification process. We develop an efficient algorithm to detect ROI and from the detected ROI, we extracted width-based features using pixel intensity difference (PID). The PID …

Ocean Acidification Modulates The Impact Of Fluoxetine On Larval Behaviors Of Non-Target Organisms, Veronica A. Chua , '21
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals from human waste, are continuously released into aquatic systems. Although pharmaceuticals alone can adversely impact marine organisms, the bioavailability of many pharmaceuticals are dependent on ambient physical conditions, like pH. As few studies have considered the interactive effects of pharmaceutical pollution and anthropogenic ocean acidification, this study investigated the behavioral response of larval sea urchins (Heliocidaris crassispina) and ascidians (Styela plicata) to environmentally-relevant concentrations of fluoxetine (10 and 100 ng L⁻¹) under ambient (pH 8.0) and acidified conditions (pH 7.7). Larval ascidians reared at pH 8.0 exhibited swam in slower, more …
Multiscale Habitat Use And Effects Of Resource Availability On California Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Interruptus) Population, Taylor Eddy
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Habitat use can affect ecological and biological processes, such as resource use, survival, and reproduction. For many species, habitat use can vary with season as their energetic needs change, for example increasing foraging area in the energetically costly reproductive season. In this study, I sought to understand the seasonal and temporal scales of spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) habitat use in a southern California ecosystem by integrating habitat surveys using GIS (Global information system), lobster demographic surveys, and diet analysis using stable isotopes. I focused on the California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) because the species uses a …

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
In low- and middle-income countries, almost three-fourths of women in the labour force lack maternity protection. In the Philippines, current laws do not guarantee paid maternity leave to workers in the informal economy. A non-contributory maternity cash transfer to informal sector workers could be used to promote social equity and economic productivity and could provide health benefits by helping mothers meet their breastfeeding goals. The objective of the study is to provide a realistic cost estimate and to assess the financial feasibility of implementing a publicly financed, non-contributory maternity cash transfer programme to the informal sector in the Philippines. Using …
Genes Related To Redox And Cell Curvature Facilitate Interactions Between Caulobacter Strains And Arabidopsis, Louis Berrios, Bert Ely
Genes Related To Redox And Cell Curvature Facilitate Interactions Between Caulobacter Strains And Arabidopsis, Louis Berrios, Bert Ely
Faculty Publications
Bacteria play an integral role in shaping plant growth and development. However, the genetic factors that facilitate plant-bacteria interactions remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated the importance of two bacterial genetic factors that facilitate the interactions between plant-growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria in the genus Caulobacter and the host plant Arabidopsis. Using homologous recombination, we disrupted the cytochrome ubiquinol oxidase (cyo) operon in both C. vibrioides CB13 and C. segnis TK0059 by knocking out the expression of cyoB (critical subunit of the cyo operon) and showed that the mutant strains were unable to enhance the growth of …

A Closer Look Into American Humanitarian Intervention: How Understanding Humanity Tells Who And When We Help, Katie Noble 21
A Closer Look Into American Humanitarian Intervention: How Understanding Humanity Tells Who And When We Help, Katie Noble 21
Honor Scholar Theses
I will focus on the United States and their motivation to aid humanitarian crises through three case studies. To realize how the United States is motivated to help, humanity’s predispositions must be well-defined, alongside their established geopolitical interests. It is easy to feel empathy for loved ones or family members, but how does empathy translate with someone in a foreign country? At our core, humans seek interaction and cooperation among others. Who and how they decide to cooperate with defines the intervention strategies. If we can understand how the individual selects their in-group, these tendencies will reflect at the state …

Nhanes Iii Mortality Follow Up: Social Determinants Creating Disparity Within The Health Outcomes Of Persons With Diabetes, Claire B. Adams
University Honors Theses
Given the recent research into the social determinants affecting health outcomes, the goal of this thesis is to examine whether a non-urban setting, among other social determinants of health, increases the risk of mortality among the United States diabetic population. We examined the relationship of urban and non-urban diabetes rates among those aged 40-74 years using a national sample of diabetic and nondiabetic Americans. The data was pulled from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) which was conducted from 1988 to 1994. After excluding pregnant women, those who did not complete a fasting AM glucose, and …

The Inflammatory Potential Of Diet And Its Relationship With Metabolic, Mental, And Cardiovascular Health Among Childhood Cancer Survivors: The St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study (Sjlife), Christian Ricardo Alvarado
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Diet is now known to play an important role in the process of inflammation and subsequent chronic health events, such as cancer, metabolic syndrome (MetS), anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and energy-adjusted DII (E-DIITM) are tools that can estimate the inflammatory potential of diet of individuals. Previous research has focused predominantly on diet-associated inflammation and adverse health effects in populations that were not composed of cancer survivors. As of the time of this dissertation, none have focused on childhood cancer survivors. Childhood cancer survivors are at an elevated risk of suffering from an …
