Fatty Acid Composition Of Grain Sorghum Lipids And Justification Of Its Use In Diet Therapy For Chronic Liver Diseases, Sh.Ya. Zоkirxodjaev, N.Sh. Shamuratova, B.A. Duschanov, A.S. Xudayberganov
Central Asian Journal of Medicine
As it is known, in chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver, due to metabolic disorders, in particular fat-lipoid metabolism, the phospholipid membrane of hepatocytes is damaged, fat infiltration occurs, and due to a decrease in the elasticity of the liver vessels, microcirculation is disrupted. In order to fill in the gaps in the studies of the chemical composition of grain sorghum in relation to the fatty acid composition and their significance for justification in the use in therapeutic (dietary) and preventive nutrition, we conducted studies of the fatty acid composition of grain sorghum grown in the territory of the …

Modifying The Lifestyle Of A Young Man: Healthy, Unhealthy And Manipulative, Dilafruz A. Khatamova, Jakhongir O. Khamdamov
Central Asian Journal of Medicine
The problem of human health is actualized as it is lost by people, starting with a young and even a child. From the standpoint of the strategy of improving human health, especially young people, the most important role is acquired by a certain form of organization of life, or lifestyle of a person. In this article, “lifestyle” is considered as a concept and reality. A classification of types of lifestyles according to the essential attributes - human health or ill health is proposed. This is a way of life: 1) healthy (HLS), 2) unhealthy (VAW), 3) manipulative (CAN) as purposefully …

A Nurse-Led, School-Based Obesity Improvement And Prevention Program: Physical Activity, Nutrition, And Psychological Interventions In Second-Grade Students, Kaitlyn Williams
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
Childhood obesity is a national healthcare crisis. Obese children are at increased risk for medical, behavioral, emotional, and psychological complications. This school-based program will educate second-grade students about adopting healthier habits. An educational program was developed to support the students with three specific components: physical activity, nutrition, and psychological counseling, capitalizing on positive, trusting relationships between the teachers, school nurse, and students. The goal is to help develop healthier habits by increasing physical activity, providing guidance for better nutrition, and decrease BMI. Parents will be supported and provided tools for the ability to sustain this in the home. After completion …
The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
New graduate nurses represent ten percent of the current nursing workforce and with the nursing shortage, retention of these nurses is key for sustaining and growing the labor pool. Furthermore, with almost twenty-five percent of new nurses leaving their positions within two years of starting, we must address the successful transition to practice. The move from student to graduate nurse can be stressful and difficult, but when combined with pandemic with reduced or no hands-on clinical experiences during their last year of school, there is greater pressure for organizations to provide orientation that addresses the specific needs of these new …
Acetylcholine Signaling In The Basolateral Amygdala During Reward Learning, Richard Blake Crouse
Acetylcholine Signaling In The Basolateral Amygdala During Reward Learning, Richard Blake Crouse
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Animal survival relies in part on the ability to learn the outcomes that environmental stimuli predict and recall those associations to make decisions later in life. Learning is not monolithic, but instead is mediated by different brain regions depending on the type of information processed. Learning can happen at happen at different speeds, and memories can vary in their longevity. Much is still unknown about the neurobiology underlying learning and memory, thus further research into these processes is necessary to build foundational understanding of these critical phenomenon, and also to develop novel treatments for patients suffering from learning and memory …
Rough Beginnings: Imagining The Origins Of Agriculture In Late Medieval And Early Modern Britain, Clio Doyle
Rough Beginnings: Imagining The Origins Of Agriculture In Late Medieval And Early Modern Britain, Clio Doyle
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The Renaissance had both apocalyptic and hopeful visions of the future, but both were tied into the idea of the Golden Age, a past age that could be described as perfectly fertile or hopelessly barren, as a time of plenty or of hunger. The idea of a time before agriculture was approached with ambivalence: it was at once the innocent, ideal beginning and the feared end. I argue in my dissertation, “Rough Beginnings: Imagining the Origins of Agriculture in Late Medieval and Early Modern Britain,” that stories about the invention of agriculture allowed writers of poetry, drama, history, and husbandry …
Patterns Of Adaptive And Purifying Selection In The Genomes Of Phocid Seals, Stephen John Gaughran
Patterns Of Adaptive And Purifying Selection In The Genomes Of Phocid Seals, Stephen John Gaughran
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Modern genomic sequencing technologies provide the opportunity to address long-standing questions in molecular evolution with empirical data. In this dissertation, I combine this new technology with advances in statistical population genetics to describe how deleterious mutations and adaptive evolution have shaped the genomic evolution of phocid seals. In Chapter 1, I model historical demographic processes using whole genome sequences of eight seal taxa: the Hawaiian monk seal, the Mediterranean monk seal, the northern elephant seal, the southern elephant seal, the Weddell seal, the grey seal, the Baltic ringed seal, and the Saimaa ringed seal. Through this, I establish that the …

Immune-Metabolic Regulation By The Transsulfuration Pathway, Aileen Heeyeon Lee
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Pro-longevity interventions such as caloric restriction (CR) and methionine restriction (MR) can improve metabolic health. However, despite decades of extensive studies, the mechanisms that underlie the benefits of these dietary interventions are still being characterized. Particularly, the effect of these diets on immune cells in mediating their metabolic benefits has been largely unexplored. This work aimed to expand our understanding of how these dietary interventions may regulate immune responses and identify novel immunomodulatory pathways that could be harnessed during inflammatory and metabolic pathologies. In line with other studies in animal models, we identified that the transsulfuration pathway (TSP) was induced in …
Developing Tradition: A History Of Intercultural Health Governance In Mexico, 1940-2000, Joshua Mentanko
Developing Tradition: A History Of Intercultural Health Governance In Mexico, 1940-2000, Joshua Mentanko
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This is an intellectual and social history of efforts by the Mexican state to order and transform medical pluralism for developmentalist ends in the highlands of Chiapas state between 1940 and 2000. Focusing on state employees, bilingual and indigenous doctors and midwives, and Mexican and foreign anthropologists, it grounds the emergence of “interculturalidad” – or the project of integrating indigenous traditional medicine into state and non-state health institutions – in a broader history of economic development and modernization and indigenous resistance to and negotiation of capitalist and national integration projects. It shows how efforts to integrate traditional medicine have not …
Effects Of Dietary Fats On Mechanisms Of Adipose Expansion And Function, Allison Marie Wing
Effects Of Dietary Fats On Mechanisms Of Adipose Expansion And Function, Allison Marie Wing
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Obesity, defined as the excessive accumulation of white adipose tissue (WAT), is a global pandemic and increases risk of many other pathologies. However, in vivo molecular mechanisms of adipocyte formation, or adipogenesis, during obesity and high-fat diet (HFD) consumption are still being understood. WAT can expand either through the proliferation of adipocyte precursors (APs) and their differentiation to form new adipocytes (adipogenesis) or through the increased size of adipocytes (hypertrophy). To study how dietary fats impact adipose expansion, mice were fed custom HFDs, each containing a different fat source, and adipogenesis and hypertrophy were quantified. This screen illustrated how dietary …

Essays On A Consumer Subsidy With Firms' Bidding, Ge Zhang
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates a consumer subsidy program known as ``Home Appliances Going to the Countryside" (HAGC). The HAGC subsidy program provided rebates to Chinese consumers from the countryside if they purchased eligible products from 2008 to 2012. This dissertation first investigates the relation between the HAGC subsidy program and the ownership and recent purchases of home appliances and electronics, using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. We find that households with agricultural Hukou made a larger number of purchases in the past 12 months than non-agricultural ones during the HAGC subsidy program, and we provide evidence that such …
Mechanisms By Which Metaflammation And Adiponectin Regulates Glucose And Lipid Metabolism, Xiruo Li
Mechanisms By Which Metaflammation And Adiponectin Regulates Glucose And Lipid Metabolism, Xiruo Li
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are among the most serious global health problems as they are increasing in prevalence and related to many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, cancer and other metabolic disorders. Obesity increases the risk for T2DM through the development of low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. Specifically, studies have shown that enhanced inflammation in adipose tissue is an essential player in the progression of insulin resistance and T2DM in obese individuals. However, how immune cells sense nutritional status and contribute to whole-body metabolism are largely unknown. In addition, most of the currently available therapies …
Analyzing The Role Of Er Membrane Biogenesis In Mitotic Fidelity, Holly Elizabeth Merta
Analyzing The Role Of Er Membrane Biogenesis In Mitotic Fidelity, Holly Elizabeth Merta
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In cell division, chromosomes align and attach to the mitotic spindle with high fidelity in order to limit missegregation of chromosomes that form individual nuclei, termed micronuclei. During cell division, membrane-bound organelles are cleared to the periphery of the cell; lack of clearance of membranes from chromosomes leads to chromosome missegregation. Cells regulate the biogenesis of their membranes throughout the cell cycle. Cancer cells frequently have upregulation of membrane lipid synthesis and micronuclei, but a connection between membrane biogenesis and chromosome missegregation leading to formation of micronuclei has not been established. In my thesis work, I show that the protein …
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers, Thyroid Hormones, And Risk Of Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Huang Huang
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers, Thyroid Hormones, And Risk Of Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Huang Huang
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer of the endocrine system. The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased worldwide for decades in the general populations and in the US military personnel. Although emerging evidence indicates that exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is related to disruption of thyroid hormone homeostasis, the association between exposure to PBDEs and risk of thyroid cancer is still unclear. Additionally, mutations in genes coding for enzymes involved in regulation, metabolism, or functional activation of PBDEs and thyroid hormones could modify the PBDEs and thyroid hormones related risk of thyroid carcinogenesis. Using data from a nested …
Mechanisms Of Resource Competition With Intraspecific Variation, Erica Marie Holdridge
Mechanisms Of Resource Competition With Intraspecific Variation, Erica Marie Holdridge
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Intraspecific trait variation occurs in nearly all species and is found in a variety of traits, including morphological, behavioral, and physiological traits. Unlike fields such as evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology which have long recognized the importance of intraspecific trait variation (ITV), community ecologists have historically viewed ITV as “noise” that obscures broader population- and community-level patterns of interest. However, recent work has demonstrated that ITV can profoundly affect ecological interactions and processes through a variety of mechanisms (other earlier paper, Bolnick et al. 2011). Of particular interest is the effect of ITV on competition and coexistence. Empirical work has …
Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez
Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
The prevalence of depression is particularly high in the Latinx population, and this population is associated with lower rates of depression diagnosis and treatment. One intervention that has shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. Though the effects of culturally adapted therapy, language being the most common adaptation, have been studied, the difference in outcomes for bilingual, bicultural speakers has not been examined. In this randomized control trial, we will compare the effectiveness of Spanish language cognitive behavioral therapy to that of English language therapy in bilingual, foreign-born, Latinx patients with depressive symptoms. …
Vitamin E Alpha-Tocopherols To Prevent Recurrent Stroke In Patients With A Minor Neurovascular Event, Veronica Guirguis
Vitamin E Alpha-Tocopherols To Prevent Recurrent Stroke In Patients With A Minor Neurovascular Event, Veronica Guirguis
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Minor ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks involve impaired perfusion to corresponding brain regions leading to neurological deficits that may or may not resolve after the event. Adults suffering one of these minor neurovascular events have high odds of a recurrent stroke within the first 90 days, mitigated but not prevented by standard treatment of clopidogrel and aspirin. Vitamin E alpha-tocopherols have been shown to reduce platelet aggregation, potentiate aspirin, and reduce ischemic damage. This study will assess the efficacy of vitamin E alpha-tocopherol, in addition to the standard treatment, on stroke recurrence in adults with a minor neurovascular event …
Do Gender Differences Lead To Unequal Access To Climate Adaptation Strategies In An Agrarian Context?: Perceptions From Coastal Bangladesh, Saleh Ahmed, Elizabeth Kiester
Do Gender Differences Lead To Unequal Access To Climate Adaptation Strategies In An Agrarian Context?: Perceptions From Coastal Bangladesh, Saleh Ahmed, Elizabeth Kiester
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2021
While people around the world are increasingly facing various climate-related stresses, women with limited resources in low income developing societies are often at a greater risk largely because of their pre-existing constraints on social, economic, political, and cultural resources and opportunities. In this paper, we investigate how gender differences influence farmers’ access to various resources that are critical for local climate adaptation in coastal Bangladesh. As one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in not only the country but the world, coastal Bangladesh is experiencing a significant increase in sea level rise, tropical cyclones, storm surges, coastal flooding, coastal erosions as …
