Hotel Wellness Final Draft, Tristan Knight
Hotel Wellness Final Draft, Tristan Knight
Hospitality Graduate Student Scholarship
Hotel wellness programs have been recognized by businesses and societies fostering wellness among individuals. Sometimes, responding to higher costs and enhancing corporate social responsibility for these programs have grown well in popularity (Torres & Zhang, 2021). Most hotels that offer a healthy lifestyle program focus on aspects of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness in the pursuit of total well-being (PR Newswire, 2018). Since this is the foundation for these wellness programs, it is paramount that guests are able to have options in activities they partake in that are offered by their hotel of choice. The objective is for guests …

Categorization Of Orthologous Gene Clusters In 92 Ascomycota Genomes Reveals Functions Important For Phytopathogenicity, Daniel Peterson, Tang Li, Ana M. Calvo, Yanbin Yin
Food for Health: Publications
Phytopathogenic Ascomycota are responsible for substantial economic losses each year, destroying valuable crops. The present study aims to provide new insights into phytopathogenicity in Ascomycota from a comparative genomic perspective. This has been achieved by categorizing orthologous gene groups (orthogroups) from 68 phytopathogenic and 24 non-phytopathogenic Ascomycota genomes into three classes: Core, (pathogen or non-pathogen) group-specific, and genome-specific accessory orthogroups. We found that (i) ~20% orthogroups are group-specific and accessory in the 92 Ascomycota genomes, (ii) phytopathogenicity is not phylogenetically determined, (iii) group-specific orthogroups have more enriched functional terms than accessory orthogroups and this trend is particularly evident in phytopathogenic …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell‐derived membrane vesicles that are released into the extracellular space. EVs encapsulate key proteins and mediate intercellular signalling pathways. Recently, primary cilia have been shown to release EVs under fluid‐shear flow, but many proteins encapsulated in these vesicles have never been identified. Primary cilia are ubiquitous mechanosensory organelles that protrude from the apical surface of almost all human cells. Primary cilia also serve as compartments for signalling pathways, and their defects have been associated with a wide range of human genetic diseases called ciliopathies. To better understand the mechanism of ciliopathies, it is imperative to know …

Covid-19 Vaccine Acceptance Among College Students: A Theory-Based Analysis, Manoj Sharma, Robert E. Davis, Amanda H. Wilkerson
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
The severity and pervasiveness of the COVID-19 pandemic have necessitated the emer-gency use of COVID-19 vaccines. Three vaccines have been approved in the United States (USA). However, there is still some hesitancy in COVID-19 vaccine acceptability among some subgroups, including college students. While research is limited on vaccine acceptability behavior among college students, preliminary data suggests hesitancy as being high. This study aimed to explain the correlates of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among college students who reported hesitancy toward the COVID-19 vaccine and those who did not using the initiation component of the multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change. Using …

The Anti-Sigma Factor Muca Is Required For Viability In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Melissa C. Schofield, Daniela Q. Rodriguez, Amanda A. Kidman, Erin K. Cassin, Lia A. Michaels, Elizabeth A. Campbell, Peter A. Jorth, Boo Shan Tseng
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
During decades-long infections in the cystic fibrosis (CF) airway, Pseudomonas aeruginosa undergoes selection. One bacterial genetic adaptation often observed in CF isolates is mucA mutations. MucA inhibits the sigma factor AlgU. Mutations in mucA lead to AlgU misregulation, resulting in a mucoid phenotype that is associated with poor CF disease outcomes. Due to its ability to be mutated, mucA is assumed to be dispensable for bacterial viability. Here we show that, paradoxically, a portion of mucA is essential in P. aeruginosa. We demonstrate that mucA is no longer required in a strain lacking algU, that mucA alleles encoding for proteins …

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes significant morbidity and mortality in premature infants; therefore, the identification of therapeutic and preventative strategies against NEC remains a high priority. The ligand-dependent transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is well known to contribute to the regulation of intestinal microbial communities and amelioration of intestinal inflammation. However, the role of AhR signaling in NEC is unclear. Experimental NEC was induced in 4-d-old wild-type mice or mice lacking AhR expression in the intestinal epithelial cells or AhR expression in CD11c

The Analysis Of Folate-Dependent Transcription Factor Zinc Finger Protein 410, Feifan Xu
Senior Honors Theses
A previous study that introduced dietary folate to mice in the form of folic acid to determine if gene activity would be altered based on this biological molecule demonstrated that mice without folic acid had cognition deficits, and this phenomenon was correlated with altered gene expression in their brains. The included bioinformatic analysis revealed two main transcription factors that bind to proteins in the nucleus, and one is known as the Zinc Finger Protein 410 (Zfp410). Due to the lack of literature explaining the function of this transcription factor, this project is intended to analyze Zfp410 in detail from scratch. …

Origin Of Agricultural Plant Pathogens: Diversity And Pathogenicity Of Rhizoctonia Fungi Associated With Native Prairie Grasses In The Sandhills Of Nebraska, Srikanth Kodati, Anthony O. Adesemoye, Gary Y. Yuen, Jerry Volesky, Sydney E. Everhart
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The Sandhills of Nebraska is a complex ecosystem, covering 50,000 km2 in central and western Nebraska and predominantly of virgin grassland. Grasslands are the most widespread vegetation in the U.S. and once dominated regions are currently cultivated croplands, so it stands to reason that some of the current plant pathogens of cultivated crops originated from grasslands, particularly soilborne plant pathogens. The anamorphic genus Rhizoctonia includes genetically diverse organisms that are known to be necrotrophic fungal pathogens, saprophytes, mycorrhiza of orchids, and biocontrol agents. This study aimed to evaluate the diversity of Rhizoctonia spp. on four native grasses in the …

Effect Of Steaming Process On Chemical Content And Biological Activity Of Curcuma Zedoaria Extract, Navaporn Pimrat, Sumalee Panthong, Arunporn Itharat
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Introduction: The rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe have been used to treat infection and inflammation in the Thai traditional medicine. The traditional preparation of C.zedoaria is done performed by steaming the rhizome before drying and using. There has been no information about the effect of the steaming on the chemical components and the activity of C.zedoaria. In this report, therefore, we compare the chemical content, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities of steamed, and non-steamed rhizomes of C.zedoaria.
Methods: The steamed and non-steamed rhizomes of C.zedoaria were extracted by maceration with 50% and 95% ethanol to obtain the ethanolic extracts. Then, the …

Skin cancer is more prevalent than any other cancer in the United States. Nonmelanoma skin cancers are the more common forms of skin cancer that affect individuals. The development of squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type of skin cancer, can be stimulated by exposure of environmental carcinogens, such as chemical toxicants or UVB. It is developed by three distinct stages: initiation, promotion, and progression. During the initiation, the fate of DNA-damaged skin cells is determined by the homeostatic regulation of pro-apoptotic and antiapoptotic signaling pathways. The imbalance or disruption of either signaling will lead to the survival of …
