Relationship Between Global Cognition And Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Alexia Sebghati

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is currently affecting the lives of 5.8 million Americans and is expected to double within the next 30 years. With an aging populace of baby boomers, this will place great economic strain on the U.S. creating a burden of almost $1 trillion in healthcare costs. Currently, there is no cure for AD. However, studies report that many individuals with AD experience changes in the brain up to 10-15 years before the disease’s onset. It is imperative to detect future risk of developing AD or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) before significant cognitive changes arise. Many of the risk …

Description Of Job Embeddedness In Arkansas County Extension Agents, Anika Parks May 2021

Description Of Job Embeddedness In Arkansas County Extension Agents, Anika Parks

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Cooperative Extension System (CES) has had a long-standing problem with the retention of its county Extension agents (CEAs), who are in charge of running various programs in over 3,000 counties within the United States. When a CEA leaves a county, voluntarily or involuntarily, the community members are left without that leader, and their needs go unmet, which was proposed to increase voluntary turnover among CEAs even further. Arkansas CES has had its problems with turnover, and studying this issue through the lens of Job Embeddedness Theory was identified as a gap in the literature.

Job Embeddedness Theory is a …

The newly described pathogen, Staphylococcus agnetis, has been reported to be overrepresented in …

Theoretical Assessment Of Plant Alkaloids For Potential Toxicity And Environmental Impacts, Xiara Day May 2021

Theoretical Assessment Of Plant Alkaloids For Potential Toxicity And Environmental Impacts, Xiara Day

Theses (2016-Present)

Alkaloids are secondary plant metabolites that serve as a defense mechanism against herbivores and other predators. There are over 12,000 alkaloids known. Plant alkaloids exhibit a great cause for concern as they are often found in various food sources such as wheats, cereals, spices, herbs, and honey. The toxicity of plant alkaloids poses as a significant danger to both wildlife and humans. Genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, pneumotoxicity and, more notably, hepatotoxicity are all associated with the chronic consumption of plant alkaloids. It is believed that the physical and chemical properties of plant alkaloids attribute to their toxicity. The objective of this study …

Prenatal Dietary Education, Using The Midwifery Model, In Ireland Vs The United States, Allison Erby

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Prenatal dietary education is a very important component of care in healthy pregnancies, but more than that, dietary education can be an indicator of the value a healthcare provider places on holistic care or preventive medicine. The United States and Ireland are compared in this study because they represent high intervention vs. low intervention approaches, respectively, to obstetric care. Healthcare professionals from the United States and Ireland perceive the most important nutrients and method of receiving those differently. Maybe the most telling contrast, healthcare professionals in Ireland perceive food as the way pregnant women should receive vital nutrients, but healthcare …

Dissolving Realities: An Endless Domestic Landscape, Hanzang Lai, Phang Lim May 2021

Dissolving Realities: An Endless Domestic Landscape, Hanzang Lai, Phang Lim

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis explores how the exponential growth in communication technology is changing the way we interact with the tangible and intangible spaces. The invasion of the public into the private, the collective into the domestic, the work into the leisure, and the ability to be constantly connected wirelessly have caused a dissolution of the physical domestic space. The domestic space has lost its value of privacy and intimacy and the boundary between the binaries will be no more. The gap between “the control” and “controlled” has widened and productive workers will be oppressed to be even more productive under the …

Recent Advances In Understanding Tick And Rickettsiae Interactions, Shahid Karim, Deepak Kumar, Khemraj Budachetri

Faculty Publications

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods with unique molecular mechanisms for digesting host blood meal while acting as vectors for various pathogens of public health significance. The tick's pharmacologically active saliva plays a fundamental role in modulating the host's immune system for several days to weeks, depending on the tick species. The vector tick has also developed sophisticated molecular mechanisms to serve as a competent vector for pathogens, including the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Evidence is still inadequate concerning tick–rickettsiae–host interactions and saliva-assisted transmission of the pathogen to the mammalian host. Rickettsia parkeri, of the SFG rickettsia, can cause a …

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Despite widespread interest in chemoprevention and therapy due to the high margin of safety of dietary natural compounds, clinical intervention with single agents has failed to yield the expected outcomes, mostly due to poor bioavailability and low potency. Combinations of natural agents with synergistic effects are gaining increasing attention. In the present study, in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of a combination of two natural dietary agents, green tea epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol were investigated. It was revealed that their combination at low doses (at which single agents induce minimal apoptosis) synergistically increased apoptosis (combination index < 1) in head and neck cancer cell lines. Synergistic apoptosis was also supported by caspase‑3 and PARP cleavage. The combination also significantly inhibited growth of xenografted head and neck tumors in nude mice as supported by significant inhibition of tumor volume, tumor weight and Ki67 expression, and increase in TUNEL‑positive cells. Mechanistic studies revealed that the combination inhibited AKT‑mTOR signaling both in vitro …
