You Are What You Think: The Impacts Of Body Weight Perception In Young Adolescent Women, Olivia Ceja
You Are What You Think: The Impacts Of Body Weight Perception In Young Adolescent Women, Olivia Ceja
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
While research suggests a multifactorial array of contributors to adolescent obesity including lack of physical activity, dietary behaviors, psychosocial factors including the perception of being overweight and body dissatisfaction have been more recently associated with unhealthy weights, unhealthy behaviors and amplified risk of obesity. At an all girl’s private college preparatory middle and high school in Los Angeles, amid a competitive and rigorous academic environment, students face additional pressure to succeed and strive for perfection. Although body weight perception can be used to identify students who are at risk for eating disorders at the middle and high school levels, the …

Working Together? A Situational Analysis Of Combining Prevention Efforts Targeting Obesity And Eating Disorders In Schools, Alana Ireland, Shelly Russell-Mayhew
Working Together? A Situational Analysis Of Combining Prevention Efforts Targeting Obesity And Eating Disorders In Schools, Alana Ireland, Shelly Russell-Mayhew
The Qualitative Report
The serious consequences and difficulties with treatment of obesity and eating disorders have prompted many to suggest focusing on prevention. Although most often considered distinct conditions with competing needs, some have advocated for an integrated approach to the prevention of a spectrum of weight-related issues including obesity and eating disorders. Despite a strong rationale for focusing prevention on the spectrum of weight-related issues, tensions exist with regard to whether this is feasible or best practice. The current study used situational analysis to explore the tensions associated with the broader situation of preventing weight-related issues in schools. Semi-structed interviews and document …

An Analysis Of Reflections On Researcher Positionality, Oluwatoyin Olukotun, Elizabeth Mkandawire, Jeri Antilla, Faten Alfaifa, Jennifer Weitzel, Victoria Scheer, Mary Olukotun, Dr. Lucy Mkandawire-Valhmu
The Qualitative Report
Reflexivity is a central tenet of qualitative research. Engaging in self-reflexive praxis allows researchers to identify areas of tension in the research process that need to be further deconstructed. In this paper, we draw on our collective self-reflective experiences as qualitative health researchers whose scholarship is informed by critical and postcolonial feminist epistemologies to offer some guidance on how to approach the concept of insider versus outsider in the research process. Specifically, we analyze recurring methodological tensions related to positionality and outline how they were addressed. The lessons learned from our studies can be instructive to other qualitative researchers.

Composition And Oxidative Potential Of Fine Particulate Matter From Pascagoula, Ms, Madison Smith
Honors Theses
Air pollution is one of the top-ranking risk factors for death and disability around the world, accounting for nearly 4.9 million deaths worldwide (State of Global Air, 2019). Specifically, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked to many adverse effects on human health, yet there is very little known about what characteristics exactly cause these adverse health effects and how they cause them. Samples for this study were collected from Pascagoula, MS, a small town located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that is home to many industrial yards, from September 2013 to December 2013. Black carbon (BC) analysis …

The important details that encompass this literature are maize’s cultural significance in my life’s story, the comparison of various starches broken down into amylose and amylopectin ratios, a summative historical account on maize’s spread throughout numerous parts of the old world, and the genetical analysis of maize that explains the key features that have led …
Chronic Exercise And Memory Interference, Lisa Vogelgesang
Chronic Exercise And Memory Interference, Lisa Vogelgesang
Honors Theses
This online study examined whether chronic exercise is associated with attenuated memory interference. Sixty-three healthy, young adults completed an interference task (AB/AC-paradigm) and self-reported the number of days and minutes a day they engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. We found that proactive interference (PI), but not retroactive interference (RI), occurred but none of the exercise modalities significantly impacted PI. Future studies should evaluate whether different interference tasks display diverse sensitivities to exercise-induced changes in memory interference. Moreover, other potential modulating factors, such as the duration and intensity of the exercise should be controlled for.
Early Intervention Service Delivery Models In Mississippi: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Claire Harper
Early Intervention Service Delivery Models In Mississippi: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Claire Harper
Honors Theses
Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to compare two models of service delivery for early intervention in Mississippi from a health care sector perspective: (1) face-to-face therapy in the home environment and (2) a hybrid model (i.e., telepractice and face-to-face therapy in the home environment), in order to compare costs and determine the most cost-effective service delivery of early intervention.
Methods: Children (n = 10) were recruited and determined to qualify for early intervention services through the Mississippi First Steps Early Intervention program. One early intervention provider, a certified SLP, from the northern health region provided early intervention …
Why Did The Camel Cross The Road?: The Use Of Camel Racing And Military Pageantry In Unifying Oman Through Nationalism Racing, Elizabeth Williams
Why Did The Camel Cross The Road?: The Use Of Camel Racing And Military Pageantry In Unifying Oman Through Nationalism Racing, Elizabeth Williams
Honors Theses
In 1970, Sultan Qaboos bin Said seized power from his father Sultan Said bin Taimur in a bloodless coup with backing from the British. Prior to this, bin Taimur led with policies that left Oman open to foreign involvement and internal divisions between the interior and exterior of the country. After coming to power, Qaboos undertook several progressive policies to modernize and unite the country. This paper examines how two cultural symbols- camel racing and military pageantry- were used to develop ethnic nationalism into civic nationalism.

Honors Theses
Client experience is an important consideration in physical and occupational therapy (known as rehabilitation therapy.) The personality trait of grit has been studied in many different settings and populations and could have an impact on rehabilitation therapy clients’ perceptions and experiences. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between scores on Dr. Angela Duckworth’s Grit Scale (that identifies the presence and strength of grit) and perceptions of experiences by rehabilitation therapy clients. Seven males and twelve females (age: 56.78 ± 15.83) participated in this study. The Grit Scale was used to assess participants’ grit. Multiple-choice questions were …
The Rates Of Caries Prevalence By Sex And Age From Individuals In St. Mary Graces And East Smithfield Cemeteries, Elizabeth Houston, Joseph Upton
The Rates Of Caries Prevalence By Sex And Age From Individuals In St. Mary Graces And East Smithfield Cemeteries, Elizabeth Houston, Joseph Upton
Honors Theses
Caries are a common pathology in past and current populations, and because of the close interaction of dentition with diet, archaeologists are able to infer components of a population’s culture from pathology like caries (Lanfranco & Eggers, 2010). Most literature implies that women have higher rates of caries than men because of cultural practices and natural physiological differences which are thought to put women at an increased risk (Lukacs, 2008). Another established trend throughout literature is that caries prevalence tends to increase with age, regardless of sex (Hillson, 2008). We evaluated data from the East Smithfield (1348-1350 AD) and Saint …

Water Fluoridation In Relationship To The Prevalence Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Elizabeth Mccarty, Benjamin D. Zeitlin
Water Fluoridation In Relationship To The Prevalence Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Elizabeth Mccarty, Benjamin D. Zeitlin
Excellence Day
Over many years, the prevalence of dental caries has generally declined where the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders has increased. Is there a possible connection to water fluoridation? Is this increase in prevalence due to our ability to diagnose these conditions, or a different environmental factor? This study covers fluoride toxicity, caries prevention, and fluoride’s possible correlation to cognitive impairments utilizing a literature review. Fluoride has undeniably been shown to reduce dental caries but is now considered a developmental neurotoxicant according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This study found multiple conflicting results for and against fluoride …
Platelet-Rich Fibrin Vs. Connective Tissue Graft: A Literature Review, Stephanie Tu
Platelet-Rich Fibrin Vs. Connective Tissue Graft: A Literature Review, Stephanie Tu
Excellence Day
Gingival defects can be treated in multiple ways. The current gold standard is connective tissue graft (CTG) in order to treat Class I and II Miller defects (Chambrone, 2008). One of the newer procedures is the use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy, which involves drawing the patient’s own blood and forming a membrane to heal gingival defects. This process has shown potential to regenerate periodontal structures due to various growth factors, which promote cell proliferation and regeneration. This literature review looks at scholarly articles comparing the use of PRF to CTG in healing clinical attachment loss (CAL) over a period …

A Review Of Behavior Analysis In Education, Devon A. Warner
A Review Of Behavior Analysis In Education, Devon A. Warner
Capstone Projects
Most education research in applied behavior analysis (ABA) is specific to early learners, which presents significant opportunity to better determine the effectiveness of various instruction methods for college-aged learners (CALs). Within the context of pedagogy, or method of teaching, ABA is the scientific study of the effect of instructional techniques on student behaviors. The available research for college-aged learners is scattered, non-definitive, and has gaps over time. Despite declension over the past half-century, research examining evidence-based practices in education has identified multiple approaches to help instructors manage and improve individual student behaviors and academic performance for CALs. In this review, …
Mapping The Politics Of The Future Growth In Maine's Aquaculture Sector, Ben Stratton, Tucker Pierce, Jake Jenkins, Tate Perkins
Mapping The Politics Of The Future Growth In Maine's Aquaculture Sector, Ben Stratton, Tucker Pierce, Jake Jenkins, Tate Perkins
Community Engaged Research Reports
Aquaculture sits at the nexus of many coastal issues in Maine, such as the privatization of coastal marine space, real estate development and gentrification of coastal communities, the decline of working waterfront communities, commercial fishing regulations, and other tangential issues such as offshore wind development. Maine’s aquaculture sector is expanding because of economic opportunity and the need for social, economic, and ecological diversification of food sources along the coast. Despite this desire for growth, conflicts and a lack of community engagement have built varying misconceptions and levels of trust in communities and among stakeholders actively engaged in aquaculture’s development. Regulations …

Understanding Utilization And Perception Of Public Spaces And Mapping Economic Investments In Downtown Lewiston, Elly Beckerman, Hart Rorick, Jasper Beardslee
Community Engaged Research Reports
This project, and Lewiston’s broader plan to transform the Tree Streets Neighborhood and downtown corridor is situated in a broader environmental justice movement and green gentrification paradigm, where the creation of renewed or revitalized green spaces and urban centers can lead to the displacement of longtime residents. Public spaces play a critical role in the health of a community, and nodes of community culture grow up around them. The City of Lewiston is looking to build safer, healthier environments and allow all residents living here to thrive. However, the city must strike a delicate balance that provides these benefits, maintains …

For Somali Bantus, farming is a fundamental part of life. Hailing from the fertile Jubba Valley in Somalia, Somali Bantus’ wealth of agricultural knowledge and experience has allowed them to today also farm successfully in Maine, overcoming the numerous challenges associated with cultivating in a new environment. Many of the obstacles Somali Bantus have negotiated relate to environmental differences between Somalia and Maine, such as different soils, fertilization regimes, pests, and more. However, an additional challenge facing Somali Bantus beyond environmental factors is that the cultural importance of farming and its potential as a viable career path is currently far …

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) frequently affects patients after treatments with bisphosphonates or denosumab, especially with high doses in patients with bone osteoporosis, neoplastic metastases, or possibly anti-angiogenic treatment for cancer. The aim of this article was to show a new treatment planning for stage 2 and stage 3 MRONJ using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) at the surgical field to enhance healing in association with a new epi-mucosal fixation technique to prevent or treat mandibular fracture. Two cases were treated by epi-mucosa fixation and autologous PRF use for prevention of mandibular fracture risks related to necrotic bone resection or a …
Intergenerational Poverty In The United States, Monica Privette-Black
Intergenerational Poverty In The United States, Monica Privette-Black
Ballard Brief
Though the United States is one of the highest-income countries in the world, there are still hundreds of thousands of citizens living below the poverty line. More children live below the poverty line than any other age group. The racial demographic and distribution of modern-day poverty can be traced back, in part, to policies such as gentrification and redlining. School system failures and a lack of access to social capital also contribute to the prevalence of intergenerational poverty. The consequences of intergenerational poverty include food insecurity, birth and developmental issues, unsafe living conditions, and increased risk of violence, incarceration, and …
The Role Of Bacteria Beta Glucuronidase Activity In Irinotecan-Induced Diarrhea, Christabel Ebuzoeme
The Role Of Bacteria Beta Glucuronidase Activity In Irinotecan-Induced Diarrhea, Christabel Ebuzoeme
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Chemotherapy-induced diarrhea is a common side effect but is an understudied area in cancer management. This problem is especially significant with irinotecan hydrochloride (CPT-11), a prodrug of SN-38 (7-ethyl-10-hydroxy camptothecin) used in treating metastatic colon cancer as well as other types of cancers (e.g., lung, pancreatic). It is reported that more than 80% of patients treated with irinotecan experienced diarrhea, with up to 40% experiencing severe (grade 3 and 4) diarrhea. Different anti-diarrhea medications (e.g., loperamide, octreotide, tincture of opium) have been recommended, but diarrhea is still a major concern in many patients treated with irinotecan as they do not …

Can A Self-Compassion Writing Intervention Impact Feelings Of Loneliness?, Brooke R. Offenhauser
Psychology Honors Projects
Loneliness is an increasingly widespread concern for many individuals, especially college students and young adults, and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Loneliness can negatively impact health and well-being; however, many interventions are not successful in reducing loneliness. One possible intervention may be a resilience practice. Namely, self-compassion may reduce feelings of loneliness because it provides a way to connect with oneself and support well-being. This study aimed to examine the impact of a self-compassion intervention on feelings of loneliness and well-being in college students. It utilized a self-compassion writing intervention compared to a control self-affirmation writing intervention and …
