Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Purpose: Our purpose is to discuss contemporary and pertinent considerations related to mineral-supplementation strategies for sheep grazing marginal rangelands in extensively managed production systems. Sources: Grey literature, peer-reviewed literature, and data (published and unpublished) from co-authors were used. Synthesis: Precision trace-mineral nutrition of sheep that are grazing extensive production systems requires a comprehensive understanding of the sheep and the grazing environment. Generally, extensive sheep production systems are found in remote geographical regions composed of marginal rangelands not suitable for cultivated crop farming or improved forages. Sheep production is subject to the accessibility and availability of grazable forage, which may vary …

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Climate Change On Food Security In The Albertine Rift Of East Africa, Malcolm Jacob Jun 2021

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Climate Change On Food Security In The Albertine Rift Of East Africa, Malcolm Jacob

Sustainability and Social Justice

As one of the most densely populated regions on the continent of Africa, the Albertine Rift (consisting of parts of Rwanda, Uganda, and the eastern DRC) faces ongoing problems providing enough food for its people through crop production, livestock husbandry, and other forms of food production. Even more troubling for the future is that anthropogenic climate change is expected to significantly exacerbate food insecurity. This paper addresses one central question: how will climate change impact food security in the Albertine Rift? Based on an analysis of available data, this paper finds that policymakers should listen closely to local farmers and …

Exploring The Relationship Between Intrinsic Motivation And Receptivity To Mhealth Interventions, Sarah Hong Jun 2021

Exploring The Relationship Between Intrinsic Motivation And Receptivity To Mhealth Interventions, Sarah Hong

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Recent research in mHealth has shown the promise of Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs). JITAIs aim to deliver the right type and amount of support at the right time. Choosing the right delivery time involves determining a user's state of receptivity, that is, the degree to which a user is willing to accept, process, and use the intervention provided.

Although past work on generic phone notifications has found evidence that users are more likely to respond to notifications with content they view as useful, there is no existing research on whether users' intrinsic motivation for the underlying topic of mHealth …

A Data-Driven Approach To Predict Carbohydrate Counting Errors In Diabetes Management, Sahaj Shah Jun 2021

A Data-Driven Approach To Predict Carbohydrate Counting Errors In Diabetes Management, Sahaj Shah

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Carbohydrate counting, which refers to estimating the carbohydrate content in meals, is critical for determining mealtime insulin doses and maintaining healthy blood glucose levels in persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, carbohydrate counting errors (i.e., over-or under-estimation of carbohydrate intake) are very common amongst patients and are often a source of poor glycemic control. Fortunately, the prevalence of personal health data from wearable medical devices like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps provide unique opportunities for understanding and predicting health management outcomes. In this study, we use adverse glycemic events following meal intakes as a proxy for identifying …

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This study determined consumers’ awareness and interest towards mushroom and mushroom-based product ideas. A survey of 222 adults was conducted in rice-based farming communities in selected provinces, namely, Aurora,
Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Pampanga. Results showed that taste, nutritional, and health benefits were the top attributes considered by both sexes whenever they buy food for household consumption. Most of the respondents (99%) liked eating mushroom because of its palatability (71%) and perceived healthiness (26%). However, the majority (76%) consumed mushrooms only once a month or seldom in a year due to its limited availability. Food supplements, coffee-like beverages, and snacks …

Incompatibility Group I1 (Inci1) Plasmids: Their Genetics, Biology, And Public Health Relevance, Steven L. Foley, Pravin R. Kaldhone, Steven C. Ricke, Jing Han

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

Bacterial plasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements that often carry antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes and genes encoding increased virulence and can be transmissible among bacteria by conjugation. One key group of plasmids is the incompatibility group I1 (IncI1) plasmids, which have been isolated from multiple Enterobacteriaceae of food animal origin and clinically ill human patients. The IncI group of plasmids were initially characterized due to their sensitivity to the filamentous bacteriophage If1. Two prototypical IncI1 plasmids, R64 and pColIb-P9, have been extensively studied, and the plasmids consist of unique regions associated with plasmid replication, plasmid stability/maintenance, transfer machinery apparatus, single-stranded DNA …

Blind Taste Testing: A Case Study Of An Emergency Room Rn With Covid-19 Anosmia & Hypogeusia (Loss Of Taste & Smell), Marietta Sperry, Kimberly Kohlieber

2021 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Anosmia, or the loss of taste and smell, is an important symptom for nurses to screen for among patients, as this can result in a poor appetite which impairs healing. In the early stages of the COVID19 pandemic, anosmia was not a known symptom indicative of infection with the virus. Yet, one Registered Nurse who was working in an Emergency Room received a positive COVID test following a workplace exposure to the virus while wearing personal protective equipment, and began to complain of anosmia shortly thereafter. Because the anosmia persisted, his spouse conducted blind taste test on him …

Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines) has become the major yield-limiting biological factor in soybean production. Common bean is also a good host of SCN, and its production is challenged by this emerging pest in many regions such as the upper Midwest USA. The use of host genetic resistance has been the most effective and environmentally friendly method to manage SCN. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the SCN resistance in the USDA common bean core collection and conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers with SCN resistance. A total of 315 …

Responsive Feeding Recommendations: Harmonizing Integration Into Dietary Guidelines For Infants And Young Children, Rafael Pérez-Escamilla, Elizabeth Yakes Jimenez, Kathryn G. Dewey

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Responsive feeding (RF) involves reciprocal nurturing feeding practices between the caregiver and the child that encourage the child to develop preferences for healthy foods and beverages and to eat autonomously. In this commentary, we summarize RF-related findings from a recent US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) consensus study report examining consistency in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) recommendations in guidelines from high-income countries, and we discuss implications for future IYCF guidelines. Although existing guidelines included generally consistent messages about several RF behaviors, such as the importance of encouraging self-feeding and self-regulation in infants and toddlers, …

The History And Evolution Of The Denisovan-Epas1 Haplotype In Tibetans, Xinjun Zhang, Kelsey E. Witt, Mayra M. Bañuelos, Amy Ko, Kai Yuan, Shuhua Xu, Rasmus Nielsen, Emilia Huerta-Sanchez

KIP Articles

Significance The discovery of the archaic Denisovan hominins is one of the most significant findings in human evolutionary biology in the last decade. However, as of today, we have more questions than answers regarding this mysterious hominin group. This study leverages the information from the well-known example of adaptive introgression on the EPAS1 gene in Tibetans, to gain insight on the history of our species’ interaction with Denisovans. We show that the Tibetan- EPAS1 haplotype came from the East Asian-specific Denisovan introgression event, and it remained selectively neutral for a long time in the population before positive selection occurred, which …
