Assessing Population Variation Using Heritable Nonmetric Traits: A Bronze Age Assemblage From Tell Abraq, United Arab Emirates, Katie Marie Taylor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the use of heritable nonmetric traits as a means for assessing population variation and biological relatedness within an archaeological sample using the commingled human skeletal tomb assemblage from the Bronze Age site of Tell Abraq, United Arab Emirates (2100-2000 BCE). A total of 410 individuals representing all ages and both sexes were interred in the Umm an-Nar period tomb. An analysis of sixteen heritable nonmetric traits was conducted on the adult human skeletal remains for both cranial and postcranial elements. Of the eight elements analyzed, one element in particular displayed anomalies rarely described in archaeological contexts. Seven …
When Healthy Turns Harmful: Increasing Understanding Of Potential Risk Factors And Approaches To Decreasing Orthorexic Behaviors, Elizabeth King
When Healthy Turns Harmful: Increasing Understanding Of Potential Risk Factors And Approaches To Decreasing Orthorexic Behaviors, Elizabeth King
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a relatively new term used to describe individuals who place an excessive value on consuming a “pure” or healthful diet, so much so that their psychological, and potentially physical, health is negatively affected. ON is driven by a focus of consuming high-quality foods rather than limiting the quantity of food. This has sometimes been referred to as “clean eating”, or only consuming “clean” foods. A commonality between ON and other eating disorders (EDs) is that the behaviors are rooted in restriction, where an individual with ON would focus on restricting specific foods, or even entire food …

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using optical motion capture and wearable sensors is a common way to analyze impaired movement in individuals with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. However, using optical motion sensors and wearable sensors is expensive and often requires highly trained professionals to identify specific impairments. In this work, we proposed a graph convolutional neural network that mimics the intuition of physical therapists to identify patient-specific impairments based on video of a patient. In addition, two modeling approaches are compared: a graph convolutional network applied solely on skeleton input data and a graph convolutional network accompanied with a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). Experiments …

Cash Transfers And Temptation Goods: An Analysis On The Impact Of Cash Transfers On Poor Households’ Consumption Of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages In The Philippines, Janelle S. Tiu, Vince Eisen C. Yao
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Sugar intake has been increasing globally and locally for individuals. Meanwhile, Philippine institutions continue to provide cash transfers (CTs) to poor households. Past literature found varying results of the impact of transfers on expenditure, consumption, and temptation goods. Most studies focused on alcohol and tobacco consumption and neglected the impact of cash transfers on the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Thus, this paper used propensity score matching and average treatment effects on the treated (ATET) evaluation method to compare the consumption of poor households with transfers to their consumption if they had not received cash transfers and determine the characteristics …

Elucidating The Modulatory Role Of Dopamine In The C. Elegans Chemosensory Ash Neuron, Cory Kunkel
Elucidating The Modulatory Role Of Dopamine In The C. Elegans Chemosensory Ash Neuron, Cory Kunkel
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The neurotransmitter dopamine regulates chemosensory avoidance behavior in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Avoidance behaviors are mediated by the polymodal ASH nociceptive sensory neurons, and behavioral avoidance of stimuli detected by ASH is less robust when dopamine signaling is impaired. We are investigating the neural response of the ASH neurons to various stimuli; our investigation includes the behavioral and physiological responses from the ASH neurons as dopamine signaling is manipulated to better understand the effects of dopamine on these sensory neurons. We hypothesize that dopamine plays a regulatory role on the ASH neurons, lessening the response of the ASH …

Examining Predictors Of Attitudes And Knowledge Of Registered Nurses And Nursing Students In Tennessee Toward Pregnant And Perinatal Women With A Substance Use Disorder, Jessica Patrylo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) among pregnant and perinatal women continue to be a national public health crisis. Furthermore, nursing students and perinatal nurses have historically negative and punitive attitudes toward this vulnerable population of women. As nurses are primary care providers for pregnant and perinatal women, this is troublesome as perinatal patients express feeling stigmatized by nurses whom they should be able to trust. This contributes to the reluctance of women to seek needed medical and prenatal care. Tennessee was the first state to criminalize drug use in pregnancy and has higher neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) rates, which were more …

Although there has been recent work on the genomic and functional diversity of lucinid endosymbionts, there are uncertainties regarding the extent of their diversity and differences in metabolisms under various environmental conditions. In this study, the genetic and functional differences in endosymbionts was examined for six lucinid host species collected from eight total sites from Florida, USA and San Salvador, the Bahamas. There were 42 metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) generated which clustered into three species and six subspecies. MAGs were closely related to clade A endosymbionts Candidatus Thiodiazotropha …
Design And Studies Of Cvd Graphene-Based Membranes On Modified Support For Water Treatment Applications, Mansour Saberi
Design And Studies Of Cvd Graphene-Based Membranes On Modified Support For Water Treatment Applications, Mansour Saberi
All Theses
Although almost 70% of the world is covered by water, less than 3% is fresh. The remainder—most of the Earth’s water is saline. To meet humanity’s increasing and unavoidable need for water, we must convert saline water into freshwater through desalination. Many desalination technologies are available, and membrane-based technologies, such as reverse osmosis (RO), are widely used. Though RO is especially common, desalination through RO faces several challenges. For example, high operation cost due to high pressure during the process or its degradable polymeric active layer in contact with chlorine-containing compounds. In terms of general functionality and energy consumption, water …

Introduction: We recently described the sulfur microbial diet, a pattern of intake associated with increased gut sulfur-metabolizing bacteria and incidence of distal colorectal cancer (CRC). We assessed whether this risk differed by CRC molecular subtypes or presence of intratumoral microbes involved in CRC pathogenesis (Fusobacterium nucleatum and Bifidobacterium spp.).
Methods: We performed Cox proportional hazards modeling to examine the association between the sulfur microbial diet and incidence of overall and distal CRC by molecular and microbial subtype in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2012).
Results: We documented 1,264 incident CRC cases among 48,246 men, approximately 40% …

Physical Inactivity And Its Predictors Among Adolescents In Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Comparison Between Cities With And Without A Healthy Cities Program, Ibrahim Alasqah, Ilias Mahmud, Leah East, Nada Alqarawi, Kim Usher
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of insufficient physical activity and excessive screen time among adolescents living in cities participating in the Healthy Cities Program (HCP) and cities not running the program in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: We surveyed 1133 adolescents from the Qassim region using systematic random sampling between April and September 2017. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate the predictors of insufficient levels of PA and excessive screen time. Results: The prevalence of <60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity/day was 82.4% and <3 days of vigorous intensity physical activity/week among adolescents was 59%. There was no significant association between living in healthy cities (HCPs) and insufficient levels of physical activity. The odds of excessive screen time were higher in HCPs than in cities not running the program (NHCPs) (OR: 1.49). The odds of insufficient daily PA (OR: 2.19) are higher among girls than boys. Increasing age is positively associated with insufficient weekly PA (OR: 1.19). The prevalence of excessive recreational screen time is 84.6% with higher odds in HCPs than in NHCPs (OR: 1.51). Conclusion: Our findings report a lack of evidence of any impact of the HCP on adolescents’ physical activity behaviors. This outcome warrants a further in-depth evaluation of the process and outcomes of the HCP in Saudi Arabia.

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Wastewater based epidemiology (WBE) has been successfully applied for SARS-CoV-2 surveillance at the city and building levels. However, sampling at the city level does not provide sufficient spatial granularity to identify COVID-19 hotspots, while data from building-level sampling are too narrow in scope for broader public health application. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of using wastewater from wastewater collection systems (WCSs) to monitor COVID-19 hotspots at the zip code level. In this study, 24-hr composite wastewater samples were collected from five manholes and two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the City of Lincoln, Nebraska. By …
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And The Microbiomes Of Two Benthic Species, Samantha Ells
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And The Microbiomes Of Two Benthic Species, Samantha Ells
Master's Theses
The presence of oil has been shown to affect the microbiomes of the water column, sediments, and organisms, both by altering the diversity and the composition of those microbial communities. If the microbiome is altered it may no longer provide benefits to its host organism, impacting its ability to survive. Thus, it is important to understand the effects of large-scale contamination events including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This study set out to examine the effects of oil exposure on the microbiome of two benthic species, southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) and eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) to further understand the effects …
Investigation Into The Evolution Of Heterogeneity Within Secondary Replicons And Their Maintenance In Genus Variovorax, Christopher Ne Ville
Investigation Into The Evolution Of Heterogeneity Within Secondary Replicons And Their Maintenance In Genus Variovorax, Christopher Ne Ville
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Approximately 10% of all bacterial genomes sequenced thus far contain a secondary replicon. This considerable genetic reservoir contains many potentially mobilizable elements, allowing for the formation of many unique secondary replicons. This property of bacterial populations vastly increases the genomic diversity available to species that effectively take up and maintain these replicons. Members of the genus Variovorax have extensive heterogeneity in genome architecture, including sequenced isolates containing plasmids, megaplasmids, and chromids. Using available Illumina data on the NCBI database, we have completed these assemblies using 3rd generation sequencing methods on 17 members of this genus. We have sequenced, assembled, …
