Current And Novel Tools In The Health Assessment Of Large Whales, Kelly Ann Cates
Current And Novel Tools In The Health Assessment Of Large Whales, Kelly Ann Cates
Fisheries
Alaskan marine ecosystems are undergoing unprecedented change and species are facing increasingly variable and potentially inhospitable habitats. As top predators, marine mammals serve an important role as sentinels of ecosystem health. With their high site fidelity, abundant numbers, coastal presence and role as a top predator, humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) provide a meaningful view into current ecosystem conditions and processes. In order to tap into their usefulness as bioindicators the basic physiology of humpback whales needs to be understood. Physiological indices can provide valuable information about fecundity, survival, health and population age structuring which is fundamental to cetacean research and …

Bridging Expert Knowledge And Fisheries Data To Inform Assessment And Management Of Rockfishes In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jesse Gordon
Fisheries
Over the past few decades, nearshore rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) have experienced increased pressure from multiple fisheries throughout the Gulf of Alaska. The unique life history traits of rockfishes pose a host of challenges that make them difficult to monitor and vulnerable to overfishing. Rockfishes are economically and culturally important to coastal communities in the Gulf of Alaska. Therefore, the inclusion of fishers' knowledge in rockfish assessment and management will help to address biological goals and meet the needs of a growing fishery. This thesis examines the recent history and current management issues in nearshore rockfish fisheries in the Gulf of …

Defatted sesame meals were extracted for ethanol soluble sugars and the effects of different conditions for extraction were compared for the composition and yield of the extracts. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) were generated from the hemicellulose fraction (following deproteinization) using endo-xylanase from Bacillus subtilis. The condition which produced the highest yield for total soluble sugars was 40% ethanol at 60 º C for 30 minutes for de-hulled (A) and hulled (B) sesame meal samples. Ultrasonication treatment of the samples had no significant benefit over water-bath. Sugar composition analysis of the samples showed the presence of glucose, arabinose, galactose and xylose with trace …

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus that may cause illness in animals or humans. SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in late December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The coronavirus infected patients ‘who suffering from Immundeficient or chronic inflammation are at higher risk of getting a severe infection from COVID-19. The symptoms such as proinflammatory and hypercoagulable, non-cardiac pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and ARDS resulting in sudden death have been seen in those patients. Supportive treatment is still the main strategy in treating this disease since there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the infection resulting from …

Utilizing Group Prenatal Care To Support Underserved Pregnant Women, Kathleen Shrader
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background
Prenatal care is a valuable time for pregnant patients to ideally receive holistic care that considers their psychosocial and physical needs. It is a vital service that decreases morbidity and mortality.
Problem
Individual prenatal care visits may not provide enough support for patients with complex psychosocial needs. Group care offers a longer visit, and education and community for pregnant women. The Native American Health Center (NAHC) offers group visits that have not been streamlined, and due to staff turnover, have left new staff under-resourced in planning visits.
Intervention
A toolkit was provided to NAHC staff on how to provide …

Prospects In Connecting Genetic Variation To Variation In Fertility In Male Bees, Garett P. Slater, Nicholas M A Smith, Brock A. Harpur
Department of Entomology Faculty Publications
Bees are economically and ecologically important pollinating species. Managed and native bee species face increasing pressures from human-created stressors such as habitat loss, pesticide use, and introduced pathogens. There has been increasing attention towards how each of these factors impacts fertility, especially sperm production and maintenance in males. Here, we turn our attention towards another important factor impacting phenotypic variation: genetics. Using honey bees as a model, we explore the current understanding of how genetic variation within and between populations contributes to variation in sperm production, sperm maintenance, and insemination success among males. We conclude with perspectives and future directions …

What Is The Most Effective Management For Patients With Concomitant Gallstones And Bile Duct Stones?, Stephanie Mccarney
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Gallstone disease is common with a high prevalence in developed nations and is expected to rise as the obesity and metabolic syndrome epidemic worsens. The associated relationship between gallstone and biliary tract disease is complex. The most effective treatment approach for patients with concomitant gallstones and bile duct stones is controversial. Multiple different combinations of one-step and two-step endoscopic and/or surgical techniques exist. Advancements in laparoscopic and endoscopic methods have paved the way for a minimally invasive approach to managing cholecystocholedocholithiasis (CCL).
Methods: A literature review was conducted via systematic search of Google Scholar and PubMed to …

Effects Of Palmitate On The Expression Of Inflammatory Cytokines In Microglial Cells, Shiyu Ma
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Obesity has become a pandemic health issue for the development of more serious illnesses such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension. Among those pathological conditions, low grade chronic inflammation triggered by saturated fatty acids (SFA) such as palmitate (PA) has been suggested to be the culprit of crimes and various signaling modulators ranging from cellular surface receptors such as toll like receptors (TLRs) and G- protein – coupled receptor 40 (GPR40) to intracellular kinases like mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and protein kinase C (PKC) have been postulated. In this study, mouse BV2 cells were treated with different concentrations of …

C. Elegans Response To Cadmium Toxicity, Brian James Earley
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cadmium is an environmental pollutant and significant health hazard that is similar to the physiological metal zinc. Residing in the same group of the periodic table, cadmium and zinc share chemical characteristics that are important for their industrial uses in electroplating, batteries, pigments, and metal alloys. The similarities of ionic cadmium and zinc have significant repercussions on biological systems. While it has long been clear that cadmium is toxic to biological systems, the mechanisms of cadmium toxicity remain poorly understood. In contrast, mechanisms of zinc homeostasis have been elucidated in growing detail. In C. elegans high zinc homeostasis is regulated …
Association Of Structural Variation (Sv) With Cardiometabolic Traits In Finns, Lei Chen
Association Of Structural Variation (Sv) With Cardiometabolic Traits In Finns, Lei Chen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are known to be associated with a variety of quantitative risk factors such as cholesterol, metabolites, and insulin. Understanding the genetic basis of these quantitative traits can shed light on the etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. However most prior trait-mapping studies have focused on single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and Indels, with the contribution of structural variation (SV) remaining unknown. In this thesis, we present the results of a study examining genetic association between SVs and cardiometabolic traits in the Finnish population. In the first chapter, we used sensitive methods to identify and genotype 129,166 high-confidence …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic and global disease rapidly growing in prevalence. Diabetes can be characterized by the dysfunction or death of the glucose sensing insulin secreting cell. cells are located within the islet of Langerhans (islet), a tissue within the pancreas. Human islets are critical for the study and treatment of diabetes. However, they can only be obtained from cadaveric organ donors. These cadaveric islets do not proliferate and can only be maintained in vitro for short periods of time, making their availability rare and fleeting. Stem cell-derived -like cells can be generated in indefinite amounts and …

Copper-Mediated Regulation Of A Traditional Iron Uptake System In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli., George Lwanga Katumba
Copper-Mediated Regulation Of A Traditional Iron Uptake System In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli., George Lwanga Katumba
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Transition metals constitute an important part of the host-pathogen interface. Iron is an essential nutrient that functions as a cofactor for numerous bacterial and host proteins, as either a ligand for oxygen in carrier proteins or an enzyme catalytic site due to its natural redox properties. As part of the innate immune response, infected hosts sequester iron from pathogens to limit their growth, a phenomenon known as nutritional immunity. On the other hand, copper ions are deployed at infection sites as a potent antimicrobial agent to kill bacteria. The ability to survive within multiple, often harsh, microenvironments is fundamental to …
Exploring Contextual Differences In Environment And Policy Strategies To Promote Physical Activity In Disadvantaged Communities, Natalicio Hector Serrano
Exploring Contextual Differences In Environment And Policy Strategies To Promote Physical Activity In Disadvantaged Communities, Natalicio Hector Serrano
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The benefits of physical activity for health are far reaching, including the reduced risk of several chronic diseases. However, only about 24% of US adults meet recommended guidelines of physical activity, with traditionally disadvantaged populations such as rural residents and persons of color facing even lower rates. Ecological models of health behavior help to understand correlates of physical activity that impact population health, but may not be as useful in disadvantaged populations where the evidence base is either lacking or not as rigorous. Furthermore, measures and methods may be underdeveloped in disadvantaged populations and there is a lack of understanding …

Meat tenderness is an important quality trait critical to consumer acceptance, and determines satisfaction, repeat purchase and willingness-to-pay premium prices. Recent advances in tenderness research from a variety of perspectives are presented. Our understanding of molecular factors influencing tenderization are discussed in relation to glycolysis, calcium release, protease activation, apoptosis and heat shock proteins, the use of proteomic analysis for monitoring changes, proteomic biomarkers and oxidative/nitrosative stress. Each of these structural, metabolic and molecular determinants of meat tenderness are then discussed in greater detail in relation to animal variation, postmortem influences, and changes during cooking, with a focus on recent …
Comparative Analysis Of Longevity And Stress Resiliency Benefits Of Supplementation With High-Antioxidative Capacity Juices In Organisms That Are Representative Of Humans, Meghan Long
Honors Scholar Theses
Neurodegenerative disease presents itself in a complex array of illnesses that is increasingly affecting the geriatric population. There has not been research on a common cause since there are a culmination of reasons that are probable ranging from genetic to environmental factors. Antioxidants have been known to prevent and protect against the damage that is otherwise caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus, high-capacity antioxidant juices supplemented into the diet of animal models such as Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, rats, and humans will allow for the study of the possible benefits.
Although a conclusion and common causation on the usage …

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (ACEI) activity of edible insect flours fermented with Lactococcus lactis strains. For the fermentation, mealworm and grasshoppers flours were dissolved (0.5% w/v) in buffer solution (pH 7.0) and individually inoculated (3%) with Lactococcus lactis strains (NRRL B-50571, NRRL B-50572). The samples were incubated for 72 h at 30 ◦C, and the pH was recorded. The degree of hydrolysis (DH) and protein content were determined. The total polyphenol compounds, antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, ORAC, and FRAP), and ACEI of the <3 kDa fractions were ana- lyzed. The pH of the fermented samples decreased to 3.5–3.9 (p < 0.05). The fermented grasshopper flour showed an increased DH (0.42%) and overall higher total polyphenol content (8.23 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent/mL). In general, the highest antioxidant activity was for the grasshopper fractions fermented for 24 h by Lactococcus lactis NRRL B-50572, which also showed 23.47% ACEI inhibition with an IC50 of 0.97 mg/mL. The peptide profile obtained increased after fermentation, being higher for the mealworm flour fermented sample. This study presents, for the first time, the use of specific strains of Lactococus lactis for fermenting edible insect-derived products in the production of bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant and antihypertensive activity.
