Every Part Of Yeast Is The Best Part, Matthieu Baulez, Bruno Bertaud, Lisa Saibi Aug 2021

Every Part Of Yeast Is The Best Part, Matthieu Baulez, Bruno Bertaud, Lisa Saibi

Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference

Yeasts are single-cell, eukaryotic microorganisms classified in the fungi kingdom. They are generally around 10μm in size, have a nuclear membrane, a cell wall, and a cytoplasmic content. Yeasts are characterized as heterotrophs, which means they rely on organic material as sources of energy and nutrients. Not all yeasts are equal. There are about 60 genera and about 1,500 species of yeasts. Only a few are used commercially. Thanks to its exceptional fermentative capacities and nutritional properties, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the main yeast used in food, beverage and baking as well as in animal nutrition. The main types of yeasts …

The Relationship Between Diet Quality, Micronutrient Content And Sleep Indices In Children Ages 9-11, Nicholas Joseph Marino

Theses - ALL

Physiological factors such as metabolism, circadian rhythms, and hormone production play an important role in sleep quality. The physiology of sleep is significantly modified by externally mediated factors, such as socioeconomic status and the quality of nutrition. Sleep actigraphy records from a sub-sample of school-age participants in the Syracuse Lead Study (n=125) were used to evaluate the impact of diet on sleep quality and efficiency. Sleep duration, efficiency, latency, and fragmentation were extracted from actigraphy records over 5 consecutive weekdays. Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) scores and component sub-scores were calculated from two 24-hour recalls per participant collected through the …

The Case For Intersectionality: An Intersectional Look At Disability In The Labor Market, Jennifer D. Brooks Aug 2021

The Case For Intersectionality: An Intersectional Look At Disability In The Labor Market, Jennifer D. Brooks

Dissertations - ALL

While approximately 10% of adults ages 18 to 64 living in the United States identify as having a disability, workers with disabilities make up only 3% of the labor force (Livermore and Schimmel Hyde 2020; Paul et al. 2020). When compared to their non-disabled counterparts, those with disabilities have lower employment rates and earnings, are more likely to work in precarious and low wage jobs and report higher levels of workplace discrimination (BLS 2020; Maroto and Pettinicchio 2014b; Robert and Harlan 2006). Yet, recent evidence suggests that disabled people's labor market disadvantages may be disproportionately experienced by those with multiple …

Risk Perception And Coping Strategies Among Direct Support Professionals In The Age Of Covid-19., Johanna Loporto, Kelly E. Spina

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) across the globe and its associated morbidity and mortality has impacted and challenged society in many ways, which resulted in adapting to a new way of life. One underrecognized and unaddressed area is the mental health of essential employees providing services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Direct support professionals (DSPs) serve an important function in the daily supervision and care of clients with IDD. It is not clear, however, how these essential workers perceived their own risk of contracting COVID-19 while working during this pandemic. Our research presents results of a …

Mineral Nutrition In Broilers: Where Are We At?, Rick Kleyn, Mariana Ciacciariello Aug 2021

Mineral Nutrition In Broilers: Where Are We At?, Rick Kleyn, Mariana Ciacciariello

Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference

Mineral nutrition remains an essential consideration for broiler nutritionists. The complex interactions between different minerals sources, other ingredients, and the broiler itself, coupled with their relatively low costs, have led to the current status of elevated levels of minerals in broiler diets. New perspectives on sustainability have brought about a rethink of the way we formulate practical diets. There are considerable opportunities for reducing macro minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, particularly for older birds. Our understanding of attaining an ideal dietary cation-anion balance is confused by the lack of clarity in measuring the balance and the bird’s ability to …

Confirmation Of A Causal Taar1 Allelic Variant In Addiction-Relevant Methamphetamine Behaviors, Tamara J Phillips, Tyler A. Roy, Sara J Aldrich, Harue Baba, Jason Erk, John R K Mootz, Cheryl Reed, Elissa J Chesler

Faculty Research 2021

Sensitivity to rewarding and reinforcing drug effects has a critical role in initial use, but the role of initial aversive drug effects has received less attention. Methamphetamine effects on dopamine re-uptake and efflux are associated with its addiction potential. However, methamphetamine also serves as a substrate for the trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1). Growing evidence in animal models indicates that increasing TAAR1 function reduces drug self-administration and intake. We previously determined that a non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in

Cfd Analysis Of Subcutaneous Deposition And Dispersion Of Insulin In Adipose Tissue, Ryan C. Lubbers Aug 2021

Cfd Analysis Of Subcutaneous Deposition And Dispersion Of Insulin In Adipose Tissue, Ryan C. Lubbers

Masters Theses

Drug delivery is the most important factor of many therapies, but a lack of technology and research have led to a very generalized understanding of drug kinetics. Insulin pump therapy for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes depends on precise delivery of the hormone into the adipose region between the dermis and underlying muscle. The kinetics of insulin within the adipose tissue environment is not well understood and varies greatly case to case. The use of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) models to study insulin kinetics in relation to influential factors will lead to a better understanding of the characteristics of …

Enhancing The Fertilizer Value Of Cattle Manure Using Organic Resources For Soil Fertility Improvement: A Review, Benedicta E. Ayamba, Robert C. Abaidoo, Andrews Opoku, Nana Ewusi-Mensah

Journal of Bioresource Management

The poor quality of cow dung in Ghana resulting from the opportunistic feeding mode of cattle impedes its adoption due to high quantities needed for application. This calls for nutrient optimization of cattle manure with inexpensive locally available sources of organic inputs that could enhance its quality. Though large volumes of crop residues and other agro-wastes are produced on-farm, they are underutilized and mostly a nuisance. Major food crops take approximately, 44 %, 42 % and 56 % of the total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), respectively and are found in crop residues. There is therefore the need …
