Identifying Prenatal And Postnatal Determinants Of Infant Growth: A Structural Equation Modelling Based Cohort Analysis, Kelly Morgan, Shang Ming Zhou, Rebecca Hill, Ronan A. Lyons, Shantini Paranjothy, Sinead T. Brophy
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: The growth and maturation of infants reflect their overall health and nutritional status. The purpose of this study is to examine the associations of prenatal and early postnatal factors with infant growth (IG). Methods: A data-driven model was constructed by structural equation modelling to examine the relationships between pre- and early postnatal environmental factors and IG at age 12 months. The IG was a latent variable created from infant weight and waist circumference. Data were obtained on 274 mother–child pairs during pregnancy and the postnatal periods. Results: Maternal pre-pregnancy BMI emerged as an important predictor of IG with both …

Aims/hypothesis: Microvascular blood flow (MBF) increases in skeletal muscle postprandially to aid in glucose delivery and uptake in muscle. This vascular action is impaired in individuals who are obese or have type 2 diabetes. Whether MBF is impaired in normoglycaemic people at risk of type 2 diabetes is unknown. We aimed to determine whether apparently healthy people at risk of type 2 diabetes display impaired skeletal muscle microvascular responses to a mixed-nutrient meal.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, participants with no family history of type 2 diabetes (FH-) for two generations (n = 18), participants with a positive family history …

Study On The Current Situation And Prevention Countermeasures Of Microplastics Pollution In Food, Wu Guan-Hua, Li Chun-Lei, Zhang Meng-Han
Food and Machinery
In this paper, the research progress of microplastics pollution in food in recent 10 years were summarized. The policies and regulations of microplastics pollution prevention at home and abroad were reviewed, and then suggestions were put forward for the prevention and control of microplastic pollution in Chinese food. It is suggested to combine with the tertiary prevention theory, including three sections of strict prevention at the source, strict control of transmission and strict control at the end.

Lower back pain effects up to 80% of people at some point in their life, a majority of cases being the result of degenerative disc disease. Treatment options for degenerative disc disease are limited, jumping from physical therapy to major spinal fusion and total disc replacement surgery with little to no approaches in between. Furthermore, surgical treatments have not shown to be more effective than conservative treatments and reducing pain and disability over the long term. Hydrogels have shown promise as a potential nucleus pulposus replacement device. Their properties are controllable and can be implanted into the body through minimally …
Social Marketing Campaigns To Promote Healthy Eating In Low-Income Louisiana Environments: A Mixed Methods Formative Assessment, Linda Fergus

Background: Compare arterial stiffness among law enforcement officers (LEOs) versus general population normative values and identify predictors of arterial stiffness in LEOs. Methods: Seventy male LEOs (age: 24–54 years) completed body composition, blood pressures, physical activity level, and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) measurements. T-tests and regression analyses were utilized to compare LEO data to normative data and predict cfPWV, respectively. Results: Compared to similar age strata within the general population, cfPWV was lower among LEO’s under 30-years (mean difference = −0.6 m·s−1), but higher among LEOs 50–55-years (mean difference = 1.1 m·s−1). Utilizing regression, age, …

Background: Adolescence is a critical point in the realization of human capital, as health and educational decisions with long-term impacts are made. We examined the role of early childhood experiences on health, cognitive abilities, and educational outcomes of adolescents followed up from a longitudinal cohort study in Pakistan, hypothesizing that early childhood experiences reflecting poverty would manifest in reduced health and development in adolescence.
Methods and findings: Adolescents/young adults previously followed as children aged under 5 years were interviewed. Childhood data were available on diarrhea, pneumonia, and parental/household characteristics. New data were collected on health, anthropometry, education, employment, and languages …

Supercoiling And Looping Promote Dna Base Accessibility And Coordination Among Distant Sites, Jonathan M Fogg, Allison K Judge, Erik Stricker, Hilda L Chan, Lynn Zechiedrich
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
DNA in cells is supercoiled and constrained into loops and this supercoiling and looping influence every aspect of DNA activity. We show here that negative supercoiling transmits mechanical stress along the DNA backbone to disrupt base pairing at specific distant sites. Cooperativity among distant sites localizes certain sequences to superhelical apices. Base pair disruption allows sharp bending at superhelical apices, which facilitates DNA writhing to relieve torsional strain. The coupling of these processes may help prevent extensive denaturation associated with genomic instability. Our results provide a model for how DNA can form short loops, which are required for many essential …

The Prevalence Of Weak Handgrip Strength In Ambulatory Oncology Patients And Its Relationship With Quality Of Life, Niamh O'Callaghan, Aoibheann O Sullivan, Catherine Mchugh Prof., Laura Keaver Miss
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Muscle strength as a proxy for muscle function has emerged as a predictor of nutritional status in both clinical as well as epidemiological studies. Hand grip strength (HGS) is a reliable non-invasive test of muscle strength. Dynapenia (weak strength) is independently associated with loss of physical functionality, quality of life (QoL) characteristics and reduced survival. The first aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dynapenia using handgrip strength (HGS) in ambulatory oncology patients and if this had an impact on quality of life (QoL). This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the oncology day ward and outpatient …

Don't miss the stone crab-it's in season now," counseled Kathryn Loring to her sister before she and her husband made their first trip from Chicago to Florida in February of 1960. Once in Florida, Loring and her husband took her sister's advice, embarking on a self-proclaimed "sea food binge" that included devouring mullet, pompano, New England and Manhattan-style clam chowder, red snapper, shrimp, and, of course, stone crab. They found the "sweet and delectable" claws of stone crab at Hudgins Cafe in West Palm Beach, Florida, where surrounded by other sun-burned tourists they consumed the meat of a crab that …
