African youth face great challenges and great opportunities. Positive youth development (PYD) programs have the potential to support youth in Africa to reach their full potential. Yet PYD approaches must be tailored if they are to be contextually and culturally responsive and relevant. The purpose of this paper is to provide an evidence-informed description of one such program, the 4-H Senegal PYD program. We first provide a conceptual background for the program, informed especially by the literature on global and cross-cultural PYD. We then share empirical results of a qualitative case study focused on the establishment, scale-up, and institutionalization of …
With Due Respect For Humanity: Engaging Affectivity Through Simulation In Catholic Seminary Formation, Marie Diane Pitt-Payne
With Due Respect For Humanity: Engaging Affectivity Through Simulation In Catholic Seminary Formation, Marie Diane Pitt-Payne
Dissertations (1934 -)
Since 1992, Catholic seminaries have approached the education of future priests through a lens of four areas of formation: intellectual, human, pastoral, and spiritual. Although human formation is considered foundational in the formation process, it has not been effectively integrated into seminary curriculum. The language of integral personalism was introduced into the formation landscape by Pope John Paul II, but this anthropology has not sufficiently informed seminary pedagogy. There is a still a subordination of the affective sphere in seminaries, particularly in intellectual formation. Medical schools have developed a pedagogical method that inserts real emotion into the educational process. This …
Intimate Partner Violence And Parenting: A Qualitative Study With Immigrant Latinas, Karina Tobon Loyo
Intimate Partner Violence And Parenting: A Qualitative Study With Immigrant Latinas, Karina Tobon Loyo
Dissertations (1934 -)
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is widespread among women, including those that are mothers (Austin et al., 2017). The impact of experiencing IPV is considered a significant health problem for women and their children (Amerson et al., 2014). The deleterious effects of IPV on parenting have been documented, including less effective parenting, engagement, communication and greater harsh discipline and neglect (Chiesa et al., 2018). Despite being the second fastestgrowing ethnoracial group, IPV research on Latinas specifically has been sparse and represents a critical public health concern that requires empirical attention (Paat et al., 2017). Immigrant Latinas may be particularly vulnerable due …

Development And Implementation Of An Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocol For Thoracic Surgery Procedures, Nicholas Collier
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
A high prevalence of lung and esophageal cancers leads to significant healthcare dollars utilized for treatment and management. Surgical resection is regarded as a key component for multidisciplinary treatment and management of these cancers. By standardizing multidisciplinary patient care and utilizing evidence-based practice, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols for thoracic surgery have offered better outcomes with fewer complications and reduced healthcare costs. The anesthesia providers at the host facility were deficient in basic knowledge related to ERAS protocols and best practice management of thoracic surgery patients. The purpose of this project was to educate anesthesia providers on ERAS principles …

Breast cancer development is associated with macrophage infiltration and differentiation in the tumor microenvironment. Our previous study highlights the crucial function of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in enhancing macrophage infiltration during the disruption of mammary tissue polarity. However, the regulation of ROS and ROS-associated macrophage infiltration in breast cancer has not been fully determined. Previous studies identified retinoid orphan nuclear receptor alpha (RORα) as a potential tumor suppressor in human breast cancer. In the present study, we showed that retinoid orphan nuclear receptor alpha (RORα) significantly decreased ROS levels and inhibited ROS-mediated cytokine expression in breast cancer cells. RORα expression …

Student’S Perspectives Of Chronic Absenteeism In A Suburban High School, Herbert Allen Gray
Theses and Dissertations
For many students, school attendance is a critical issue. There have been several studies conducted concerning attendance numbers. These studies have shown that poor attendance often affects grades, graduation rates, and socioeconomic status post-high school. The purpose of this study was to first investigate the reasons behind absences and attitudes towards school and classes because of missed days. The second purpose was to determine if a weekly mentoring meeting had any noticeable effect on attendance. The targeted pool of students consisted of those who had been identified as chronically absent the previous semester. An initial set of open-ended questions and …

Dead neonatal mice are currently used as bait for delivery of toxin to invasive brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) on Guam; once deployed in the field the mice are highly attractive to the snakes but only for about four days. An artificial bait containing a mixture of fats mimicking those in skin of the mice is also highly attractive to the snakes and remains attractive 2–3 times longer. The artificial bait, however, costs more than the mice, and is more difficult to attach to the capsules of a novel aerial bait delivery system. This paper describes a reformulation of the bait …

Perceived predation risk and the resulting antipredator behaviour varies across space, time and predator identity. Communities with multiple predators that interact and differ in their use of space, time of activity and hunting mode create a complex landscape for prey to avoid predation. Anthropogenic presence and disturbance have the potential to shift interactions among predators and prey and the where and when encounters occur. We examined how white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus fawn spatiotemporal antipredator behaviour differed along an anthropogenic disturbance gradient that had black bears Ursus americanus, coyotes Canis latrans, bobcats Lynx rufus and humans present. We quantified (a) spatial …

COVID-19 pandemic has taught the world researchers the urgent need for new sources and novel pharmaceuticals not only for existing diseases but also for both seasonal epidemics and future pandemics. Pharmaceutical drug discoveries for the past fifty years depended deeply on the procedure of empirical transmission of a huge number of pure bioactive compounds to provide new leads. The screening of extracts or isolating compounds is a common way to discover novel biologically active molecules. Most of the valuable Blue-Green algal metabolites are concentrated in their biomass. For existence in nature, Blue-Green algae (BGA) secrete and contain various organic substances …

Plastic-Eating Microbes: A New Potential Solution To Waste Mitigation?, Megan Forbes
Plastic-Eating Microbes: A New Potential Solution To Waste Mitigation?, Megan Forbes
University Honors Theses
Plastic waste is problematic for marine and terrestrial ecosystems due to the mass production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) single use plastics. What is unclear is a well-thought-out solution to solve pollution problems that will not further damage the environment. Throughout this literature review, I will investigate the role microbes play in plastic degradation, and if plastic eating microbes are an effective solution to the plastic pollution problem. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the chemical name for polyester. It is a clear, strong, and lightweight plastic that is typically used for food and beverage packaging, and other single-use purposes. The most well …

Medicaid Waivers, Administrative Authority, And The Shadow Of Malingering, Nicole Huberfeld
Faculty Scholarship
From 2018 through 2020, HHS approved state Medicaid demonstration waivers to impose new eligibility conditions such as work requirements, connecting current “personal responsibility” rhetoric and historical suspicion of malingering. The Biden administration reversed course but advocated to the Supreme Court for expansive administrative discretion. This approach supports health equity now but could enable reemergence of restrictive health policies down the road.

Rice is a staple food and primary source of calories for much of the world. However, rice can be a dietary source of toxic metal(loid)s to humans, and its cultivation creates atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions and requires high water use. Because rice production consumes a significant amount of natural resources and is a large part of the global agricultural economy, increasing its sustainability could have substantial societal benefits. There are opportunities for more sustainable field production through a combination of silicon (Si) management and conservation irrigation practices. As a Si-rich soil amendment, rice husks can limit arsenic and cadmium uptake, …
Climate Reparations: Moral, Historical, And Legal Justifications For United States Reparations Payments To Female Population Groups In Developing Countries, Kate Belsito
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The note advocates for a community-based reparations program targeting women in rural, developing countries most affected by climate change. It asserts that the United States, as a major historical emitter of greenhouse gases, bears significant responsibility for these harms and has failed to meet its international treaty obligations. The proposed program would address past injustices while promoting future adaptation, emphasizing moral accountability and systemic change.

Food and cooking analysis present exciting research and application challenges for modern AI systems, particularly in the context of multimodal data such as images or video. A meal that appears in a food image is a product of a complex progression of cooking stages, often described in the accompanying textual recipe form. In the cooking process, individual ingredients change their physical properties, become combined with other food components, all to produce a final, yet highly variable, appearance of the meal. Recognizing food items or meals on a plate from images or videos, their physical properties such as the amount, nutritional …

According to WHO, “Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease”. A major stumbling block in the care of depressed patients remains the accurate diagnosis of the severity of depression. Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a 9-question instrument is widely used for diagnosing and determining the severity of depression. However, the popularly used 5-Category of depression severity based on the sum of responses to the 9 questions was overly subjective. In view of this limitation, our paper aims to demonstrate how Latent Class Analysis of JMP Pro can be …

The Holistic Self-Care Learning Experience Of Rn-To-Bsn Students: A Phenomenological Study Of Meaning And Value, Elaina C. Mahlan
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The health of the nursing workforce is a critical aspect of high-quality health care and community health promotion, but extensive research indicates that too many nurses neglect selfcare and suffer negative health outcomes. While nursing education must provide self-care learning experiences to improve the health of nurses, the value and influence of a learning experience must be interpreted from the learner’s point of view. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to elicit the personal value that RN-to-BSN students ascribed to a self-care learning experience within a holistic nursing course at a public university. The holistic nursing paradigm offers a …

A recent workshop titled “Developing Models to Study Polymicrobial Infections,” sponsored by the Dartmouth Cystic Fibrosis Center (DartCF), explored the development of new models to study the polymicrobial infections associated with the airways of persons with cystic fibrosis (CF). The workshop gathered 351 investigators over two virtual sessions. Here, we present the findings of this workshop, summarize some of the challenges involved with developing such models, and suggest three frameworks to tackle this complex problem. The frameworks proposed here, we believe, could be generally useful in developing new model systems for other infectious diseases. Developing and validating new approaches to …

Ground-based animal models have been used extensively to understand the effects of microgravity on various physiological systems. Among them, hindlimb suspension (HLS), developed in 1979 in rats, remains the gold-standard and allows researchers to study the consequences of total unloading of the hind limbs while inducing a cephalic fluid shift. While this model has already brought valuable insights to space biology, few studies have directly compared functional decrements in the muscles of males and females during HLS. We exposed 28 adult Wistar rats (14 males and 14 females) to 14 days of HLS or normal loading (NL) to better assess …
