Relationships Among Toilet Sharing, Water Source Locations, And Handwashing Places Without Observed Soap: A Cross-Sectional Study Of The Richest Households In Bangladesh, Mazbahul G. Ahamad, Mark Burbach, Fahian Tanin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Background: A high percentage of the richest households in Bangladesh lack soap at their handwashing places, a problem that is typically considered to be one of the poor. Objective: We investigated toilet sharing practices, locations of water sources, and relevant sociodemographic factors associated with the observed handwashing places that lack soap in the richest (ninth wealth decile) households in Bangladesh. Methods: We used data from the 2017-18 Bangladesh Demographic and Health (BDHS) Survey. Logistic regression technique was used to investigate how toilet sharing practices, water source locations, and different sociodemographic factors were associated with observed handwashing places without soap. Results: …

Understanding the impacts of activity on energy balance is crucial. Increasing levels of activity may bring diminishing returns in energy expenditure because of compensatory responses in non-activity energy expenditures.1–3 This suggestion has profound implications for both the evolution of metabolism and human health. It implies that a long-term increase in activity does not directly translate into an increase in total energy expenditure (TEE) because other components of TEE may decrease in response—energy compensation. We used the largest dataset compiled on adult TEE and basal energy expenditure (BEE) (n = 1,754) of people living normal lives to find that energy compensation …

Introduction 24-hour movement behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep) during the early years are associated with health and developmental outcomes, prompting the WHO to develop Global guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years of age. Prevalence data on 24-hour movement behaviours is lacking, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper describes the development of the SUNRISE International Study of Movement Behaviours in the Early Years protocol, designed to address this gap. Methods and analysis SUNRISE is the first international cross-sectional study that aims to determine the proportion of 3- and 4-year-old …

Obesity And Overweight Among Black American Adolescent Females: The Role Of Social Influences In Everyday Dietary Practices, Megan R. Winkler Oct 2021

Obesity And Overweight Among Black American Adolescent Females: The Role Of Social Influences In Everyday Dietary Practices, Megan R. Winkler

Dissertations

Obesity and overweight disproportionately impact Black American adolescent females-placing them at a lifetime of elevated physical health risks. Despite this burden, the literature that explores the contributors to obesity and overweight among Black American adolescent females remains limited and unclear. This dissertation aims to develop knowledge related to obesity and overweight in Black American adolescent females, by appraising the current understanding of factors that contribute to their obesity and overweight, and explicating the everyday social influences on dietary practices. The primary study conducted for this dissertation used a mixed method, multiple case study design to examine the mother, daughter, and …

Prediction Of Diabetes Using Logistic Regression And Ensemble Techniques, Priyanka Rajendra, Shahram Latifi Oct 2021

Prediction Of Diabetes Using Logistic Regression And Ensemble Techniques, Priyanka Rajendra, Shahram Latifi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Background Logistic regression is a classification model in machine learning, extensively used in clinical analysis. It uses probabilistic estimations which helps in understanding the relationship between the dependent variable and one or more independent variables. Diabetes, being one of the most common diseases around the world, when detected early, may prevent the progression of the disease and avoid other complications. In this work, we design a prediction model, that predicts whether a patient has diabetes, based on certain diagnostic measurements included in the dataset, and explore various techniques to boost the performance and accuracy. Methods Logistic Regression is the main …

Certain diseases have strong comorbidity and co-occurrence with others. Understanding disease-disease associations can potentially increase awareness among healthcare providers of co-occurring conditions and facilitate earlier diagnosis, prevention and treatment of patients. In this study, we utilized the valuable and large The Guideline Advantage (TGA) longitudinal electronic health record dataset from 70 outpatient clinics across the United States to investigate potential disease-disease associations. Specifically, the most prevalent 50 disease diagnoses were manually identified from 165,732 unique patients. To investigate the co-occurrence or dependency associations among the 50 diseases, the categorical disease terms were first mapped into numerical vectors based on disease …
