Adolescents, Mental Health, And The Benefits Of Private Religious Worship, Mark D. Ogletree, W. Justin Dyer
Adolescents, Mental Health, And The Benefits Of Private Religious Worship, Mark D. Ogletree, W. Justin Dyer
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Over the years, there has been a wealth of research on religious participation[1] among adolescents and their mental health.[2] The impact of public religious behaviors, such as attending church services and participating in church activities, has been beneficial to teenagers. However, are there benefits to private religious practices, such as personal prayer and personal scripture study, to adolescent mental health? Can private religious practices provide youth with the spiritual strength and fortitude to mediate anxiety or depression? These questions will be explored in our study on adolescent mental health and religion.

A couple of years ago, a colleague recommended I read a young adult novel titled How It Went Down authored by Kekla Magoon. This fictional novel tells the tragic story of Tariq Johnson, a sixteen-year-old fatally shot by a police officer. The story, written from a multicharacter perspective, creates an intentional effect through which the reader may find it challenging to discover the truth about the book’s pivotal event because of the varied perspectives and accounts of its many characters. As a former secondary-school English teacher who taught in settings where conversations regarding police brutality and racial profiling were prevalent, …

Publishing for scholarly audiences has a long history. Some propose that the first learned society on record was founded in Toulouse, France, in 1323. The Royal Society of London was established in 1660 and published Europe’s first scholarly journal five years later. In 1848, the American Association for the Advancement of Science published the journal Science, and since that time, the number of academic journals has proliferated. According to Philip G. Altbach and Hans de Wit, over thirty thousand academic journals are in circulation today; Ben Mudrak mentions the appearance of many free open-access journals on the internet since 2006. …
The False Dichotomy Of Corporate Governance Platitudes, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
The False Dichotomy Of Corporate Governance Platitudes, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
In 2019, the Business Roundtable amended its principles of corporate governance, deleting references to the primary purpose of the corporation being to serve the shareholders. In doing so, it renewed the “shareholder vs. stakeholder” debate among academic theorists and politicians. The thesis here is that the zero-sum positions of the contending positions are a false dichotomy, failing to capture the complexity of the corporate management game as it is actually played. Sweeping and absolutist statements of the primary purpose of the corporation are based on arid thought experiments and idiosyncratic cases in which corporate leaders have managed to be either …
Pandemic Effects On Social Media Marketing Behaviors In India, Andrew N. Mason, Matt Brown, Kevin Mason, John Narcum
Pandemic Effects On Social Media Marketing Behaviors In India, Andrew N. Mason, Matt Brown, Kevin Mason, John Narcum
Faculty Publications - The LeMoyne Smith School of Business
This research examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on social media marketing in India. There is little research on the impact of a pandemic on consumer behaviors. To address this gap, this exploratory study surveyed Indian consumers’ social media behaviors. Observations from 313 Indian consumers were collected to compare how their social media behaviors for consumer decision-making have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic started. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to test mean differences in social media behaviors prior to and after the COVID-19 pandemic began. The findings demonstrated increased usage of social media as a tool for consumer …
An Empirical Examination Of The Computer Security Behaviors Of Telecommuters Working With Confidential Data Through Leveraging The Factors From Fear Appeals Model (Fam), Titus Dohnfon Fofung
An Empirical Examination Of The Computer Security Behaviors Of Telecommuters Working With Confidential Data Through Leveraging The Factors From Fear Appeals Model (Fam), Titus Dohnfon Fofung
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Computer users’ security compliance behaviors can be better understood by devising an experimental study to examine how fear appeals might impact users’ security behavior. Telecommuter security behavior has become very relevant in information systems (IS) research with the growing number of individuals working from home. The increasing dependence on telecommuting to enhance the viability and convenience has created an urgency with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic to examine the behavior of users working at home across a corporate network. The home networks are usually not as secure as those in corporate settings. There is seldom a firewall setting and …

Automated Classification Of Bi-Rads In Textual Mammography Reports, Mostafa Boroumandzadeh, Elham Parvinnia
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The main purpose of this paper is to process key information in medical text records and also classifypatients, per different levels of breast imaging-reporting and data system (BI-RADS). The BI-RADS is a scheme for thestandardization of breast imaging reports. Therefore, medical text mining is employed to classify mammography reportssupported BI-RADS. In this research, a new method is proposed for automated BI-RADS classifications extraction fromtextual reports and improves the therapeutic procedures. At first, a mammography lexicon is employed for choosingkeywords from medical text reports. Word2vec and term frequency inverse document frequency (TFIDF) techniques areused for extracting features, finally, they are combined …

Constrained Discrete-Time Optimal Control Of Uncertain Systems With Adaptivelyapunov Redesign, Oğuz Han Altintaş, Ali̇ Emre Turgut
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the conventional estimation-based receding horizon control paradigm is enhanced by using functional approximation, the adaptive modifications on state estimation and convex projection notion from optimization theory. The mathematical formalism of parameter adaptation and uncertainty estimation procedure are based on the redesign of optimal state estimation in discrete-time. By using Lyapunov stability theory, it is shown that the online approximation of uncertainties acting on both physical system and state estimator can be obtained. Moreover, the convergence criteria for online parameter adaptation with fully matched and partially matched cases are presented and shown. In addition, it is shown that …

Image forgery detection is one of the key challenges in various real time applications, social media and online information platforms. The conventional methods of detection based on the traces of image manipulations are limited to the scope of predefined assumptions like hand-crafted features, size and contrast. In this paper, we propose a fusion based decision approach for image forgery detection. The fusion of decision is based on the lightweight deep learning models namely SqueezeNet, MobileNetV2 and ShuffleNet. The fusion decision system is implemented in two phases. First, the pretrained weights of the lightweight deep learning models are used to evaluate …

The lack of computational thinking (CT) skills can be one of the reasons why students find themselves having difficulties in writing a good program. Therefore, understanding how CT skills can be developed is essential. This research explores how CT skills can be developed for programming through competitive, physical, and tactile games. The CT elements in this research focus on four major programming concepts, which are decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. We have conducted game activities through several algorithms that include sorting, swapping, and graph algorithms and analyzed how the game affects the student experience (SX) in understanding the …

Simultaneous Feedforward Online Command Rate Limiter Filters For Existingcontrollers, Gali̇p Serdar Tombul
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the biggest challenges in controller design for a mechatronics system is the actuator limitations. Either response time of the actuator or the input constraints creates limits for the controller performance and stability. In this study a novel feedforward online rate limiter scheme for arbitrary input signals is introduced by taking velocity, acceleration and jerk constraints into account, and it is investigated that how the control effort and system response is affected by the demand signal's rate of change limitations. A fin actuation system for a guided missile is given as an example where the demand signal comes from …

The integration of wireless access networks has progressed rapidly in recent years. Within the mobile communication environment, the operator provides multiple interface options for the mobile node (MN) to switch its connection to any access network during mobility to achieve the quality of service (QoS) for various traffic classes. The conventional centralised mobility management (CMM) scheme lacks reliability, dynamic anchoring and a single point of failure. This stimulates the distributed mobility management (DMM) scheme to handle mobility at the access network rather in a centralised manner. Therefore, in this paper, an IEEE 802.21 media independent handover (MIH) enhanced fully DMM …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide caused by excessive development of skin cells. Considering the rapid growth of the use of deep learning algorithms for skin cancer detection, selecting the optimal algorithm has become crucial to determining the efficiency of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems developed for the healthcare sector. However, a sufficient number of criteria and parameters must be considered when selecting an ideal deep learning algorithm. A generally accepted method for benchmarking deep learning models for skin cancer classification is unavailable in the current literature. This paper presents a multi-criteria decision-making framework for evaluating and …

The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused trillions of dollars of damages to the governments and health authorities by affecting the global economies. It is essential to identify, track and trace COVID-19 spread at its earliest detection. Timely action can not only reduce further spread but also help in providing an efficient medical response. Existing schemes rely on volunteer participation, and/or mobile traceability, which leads to delays in containing the spread. There is a need for an autonomous, connected, and centralized paradigm that can identify, trace and inform connected personals. We propose a novel connected Internet of Things …

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and changed daily life globally. Countries have declared a half or full lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. According to medical doctors, as many people as possible should be tested to identify their status, and corresponding actions then should be taken for COVID-19 positive cases. Despite the clear necessity of these medical tests, many countries are still struggling to acquire them. This fact clearly indicates the necessity of a large-scale, cheap, fast, and accurate alternative prescreening tool that can be used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 while waiting for the medical …

There Are Two Sides To Every Story, Keith A. Erekson
There Are Two Sides To Every Story, Keith A. Erekson
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
This article is the fifth chapter in his Real vs. Rumor: How to Dispel Latter-day Myths (Deseret Book, 2021), 62–76. Each chapter introduces a “Thinking Habit” that serves as an antidote to poor thinking. Along the way, the book also identifies applications for daily life in “Everyday Encounter” sidebars and each chapter ends with a summary section that identifies quick ways to identify poor thinking – the “Sniff Tests”—and restates important points from the chapter. Believing (and teaching) that “There Are Two Sides to Every Story” is an unhelpful mental framework—one of the “Myths within Us” that impede our thinking …

“Same-Sex Marriage?! What Next Polygamy?”: Mormonism In Us Political Culture, K. Mohrman
Mormon Studies Review
In his dissent to Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court decision
that determined marriage was a right that could not be constitutionally
denied to same-sex couples under the Free Exercise and
Equal Protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment, Chief Justice
John Roberts queried, “if ‘[t]here is dignity in the bond between
two men or two women who seek to marry and in their autonomy to
make such profound choices,’ . . . why would there be any less dignity
in the bond between three people, who in exercising their autonomy,
seek to make the profound choice to marry?”1 In …

The Fable As A Global Genre: Marie De France, Ulrich Bonerius, Don Juan Manuel, And Kalila And Dimna, Albrecht Classen
Quidditas
As much as recent scholarship has tried to develop a new approach toward world or global literature, the essential problem continues that in those efforts simply writers and poets from the various countries and continents are placed side by side without any consideration of inter- and transdisciplinarity, if not shared meaning and critical exchange. Drawing from the tradition of medieval fable literature, however, we face a truly productive approach in recognizing what global literature could really entail since the various writers across the continents addressed, broadly speaking, the same issues and fundamentally agreed on the critical values in all of …

As criminal justice reform has attracted greater public support, a new brand of district attorney candidate has arrived: the “progressive prosecutors.” Commentators increasingly have keyed on “progressive prosecutors” as offering a promising avenue for structural change, deserving of significant political capital and academic attention. This Essay asks an unanswered threshold question: what exactly is a “progressive prosecutor”? Is that a meaningful category at all, and if so, who is entitled to claim the mantle? In this Essay, I argue that “progressive prosecutor” means many different things to many different people. These differences in turn reveal important fault lines in academic …

Who is a member of the political community? What barriers to inclusion do immigrants face as outsiders to this political community? This Essay describes several barriers facing immigrants and naturalized citizens that impede their political belonging. It critiques these barriers on the basis of immigrants and foreign-born voters having rights of semi-citizenship. By placing naturalization backlogs, voting restrictions, and reapportionment battles in the historical context of voter suppression, it provides a descriptive and normative account of the political misrepresentation of immigrants.

For over a year, the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about systemic racial injustice have highlighted the conflicts and opportunities currently faced by environmental law. Scientists uniformly predict that environmental degradation, notably climate change, will cause a rise in diseases, disproportionate suffering among communities already facing discrimination, and significant economic losses. In this Article, members of the Environmental Law Collaborative examine the legal system’s responses to these crises, with the goal of framing opportunities to reimagine environmental law. The Article is excerpted from their book Environmental Law, Disrupted, to be published by ELI Press later this year.
