Training Wheels For Web Search: Multi-Perspective Learning To Rank To Support Children's Information Seeking In The Classroom, Garrett Allen Dec 2021

Training Wheels For Web Search: Multi-Perspective Learning To Rank To Support Children's Information Seeking In The Classroom, Garrett Allen

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Bicycle design has not changed for a long time, as they are well-crafted for those that possess the skills to ride, i.e., adults. Those learning to ride, however, often need additional support in the form of training wheels. Searching for information on the Web is much like riding a bicycle, where modern search engines (the bicycle) are optimized for general use and adult users, but lack the functionality to support non-traditional audiences and environments. In this thesis, we introduce a set of training wheels in the form of a learning to rank model as augmentation for standard search engines to …

(R1504) Second-Order Modified Nonstandard Runge-Kutta And Theta Methods For One-Dimensional Autonomous Differential Equations, Madhu Gupta, John M. Slezak, Fawaz K. Alalhareth, Souvik Roy, Hristo V. Kojouharov

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Nonstandard finite difference methods (NSFD) are used in physical sciences to approximate solutions of ordinary differential equations whose analytical solution cannot be computed. Traditional NSFD methods are elementary stable but usually only have first order accuracy. In this paper, we introduce two new classes of numerical methods that are of second order accuracy and elementary stable. The methods are modified versions of the nonstandard two-stage explicit Runge-Kutta methods and the nonstandard one-stage theta methods with a specific form of the nonstandard denominator function. Theoretical analysis of the stability and accuracy of both modified NSFD methods is presented. Numerical simulations that …

(R1458) A New Finite Difference Scheme For High-Dimensional Heat Equation, Jafar Biazar, Roxana Asayesh Dec 2021

(R1458) A New Finite Difference Scheme For High-Dimensional Heat Equation, Jafar Biazar, Roxana Asayesh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this research‎, ‎a new second-order finite difference scheme is proposed to solve two and three- dimensional heat equation‎. Finite difference equations are determined via a discretization approach in which spatial second order partial derivatives in x and y directions are approximated simultaneously‎ while in the classic method, each spatial partial derivative is replaced by a central finite difference approximation, separately. By this new discretization scheme and also using the forward difference to the first-order time derivative, a finite difference equation is obtained for the parabolic equation. This approach is explicit and similar to other explicit approaches, an interval for …

Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey Of Existing Literature, Best Practices, And Implementation, Kevin Label Dec 2021

Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey Of Existing Literature, Best Practices, And Implementation, Kevin Label

Master's Theses

In the United States alone, common diseases spread among plants account for billions of dollars lost in crop yield each year. This issue is exacerbated in countries with less infrastructure to defend against crop epidemics, and can lead to famine and forced migration. Farmers can seek the help of plant pathology experts to defend against diseases and detect crop irregularities early on. However, access to experts can be difficult, and even those trained in the field may miss symptoms before it is too late. To assist in early disease detection, a number of papers have been released on the potential …

Experimental Investigation Of The Aerodynamics Of A Large Industrial Building With Parapet, Aly Mousaad Aly, Matthew Thomas, Hamzeh Gol-Zaroudi

Faculty Publications

The aerodynamic performance of a roof depends significantly on its shape and size, among other factors. For instance, large roofs of industrial low-rise buildings may behave differently compared to those of residential homes. The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate how perimeter solid parapets can alter the flow pattern around a low-rise building with a large aspect ratio of width/height of about 7.6, the case of industrial buildings/shopping centers. Solid parapets of varied sizes are added to the roof and tested in an open-jet simulator in a comparative study to understand their impact on roof pressure coefficients. …

Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith Dec 2021

Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith

Honors Theses

Vehicular ramming attacks are a relatively new phenomenon within transnational terrorism. Their use is concentrated heavily within Israel and the West Bank. Using data from the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, I conduct an analysis of automobilebased terrorist attacks in Israel and the West Bank. I identify examine the relationship between Israeli counterterrorism policy, specifically the institution of barriers to physical movement, and the adoption of vehicle ramming tactics. These walls and checkpoints inadvertently provoke vehicle ramming attacks, even if effective at reducing firearm and explosive-based attacks. Exploration of existing literature on terrorist tactic selection suggests that vehicular attacks …

The Role Of The Serine/Threonine Phosphatase Pstp In The Mycobacterial Cell Wall Regulation, Farah Shamma Dec 2021

The Role Of The Serine/Threonine Phosphatase Pstp In The Mycobacterial Cell Wall Regulation, Farah Shamma

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of the deadly infection Tuberculosis (TB). The current standard antibiotic regimen for TB treatment combines fours drugs to be taken for at least six months. Mtb shows intrinsic phenotypic tolerance to antibiotics contributing to the long treatment regimen. In addition, Mtb cells can achieve a non-replicating state exhibiting antibiotic tolerance, reduced metabolism and altered cell wall staining. The changes in the cell wall and reduced permeability to antibiotics in stressed cells suggest that the regulation of the cell wall is a major contributor to antibiotic tolerance. The mycobacterial cell wall consists of covalently …

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Local as well as national economy and safety depend on the network characteristics of the transportation infrastructures. Destruction of transportation infrastructures causes the direct cost of the reconstruction as well as indirect cost due to loss of mobility. In addition, emergency response and recovery cannot be rendered if access to the affected community is hampered due to a damaged transportation network. Hence, researchers as well national and international organizations are focusing more on a resilience-based approach instead of a traditional recovery-based approach for the transportation infrastructures recently. As a result, there exist a high number of research articles that developed …

Badnaam Women Of Bollywood: The Combative Sexual Politics Of Item Songs In India, Ketaki Deshpande

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the controversial Bollywood convention “item number,” a vampy song with suggestive lyrics and hypersexualized imagery of dancing women, as a crucial cultural artefact reflecting the gender and sexual uneasiness in India. Sex avoidance is a common theme in Bollywood films and in the country, where media and people are heavily censored and policed by anti-Romeo squads under the Modi administration. The item girl breaks the sexual tension with a mega hit song and hook step that fuels the economy of dance and desire in India. While the song is completely unrelated to the narrative of the film, …

The Political And Criminological Conspiracy Of Terrosism: A Case Study Of Nigeria, Cajetan Chidi Ihe

Dissertations (2016-Present)

Nigeria has recently witnessed the repeated prevalence of a fog of terror that has threatened the stability, peace, and sovereignty of the nation. While the world's attention focuses on Afghanistan, Iraq, and bombings in embassies around the Western world, shocking terrorist activities with immeasurably devastating impacts are regularly ignored by the Nigerian government and the international community. Since 1970, Nigeria has continued to experience repeated domestic attacks entrenched in different forms of tensions and motivations. The Global Terrorism Index (2019) ranked Nigeria as the third most terrorized country in the world, behind only Iraq and Afghanistan with 1,634 attacks, 16,108 …

Examining The Relationship Between Lep Status And Delinquency Amongst High Schools Across America, Adrian Jesus Campos Dec 2021

Dissertations (2016-Present)

This research is intended to examine the relationship between the enrollment of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in American high schools and the rate of delinquency on campus. While the stigma and general belief that immigrants and criminality are correlated has existed throughout American History, empirical research findings have generally indicated the inverse to be true and often find that immigrants engage in lower rates of delinquency in comparison to their non-immigrant counterparts. Previous work in the field has primarily identified immigrants by legal or technical categorization, primarily nativity and immigrant status. Fewer are the studies who identify this group …

You Are Not A Commodity: A More Efficient Approach To Commercial Privacy Rights, Benjamin T. Pardue Dec 2021

You Are Not A Commodity: A More Efficient Approach To Commercial Privacy Rights, Benjamin T. Pardue

Washington Law Review

United States common law provides four torts for privacy invasion: (1) disclosure of private facts, (2) intrusion upon seclusion, (3) placement of a person in a false light, and (4) appropriation of name or likeness. Appropriation of name or likeness occurs when a defendant commandeers the plaintiff’s recognizability, typically for a commercial benefit. Most states allow plaintiffs who establish liability to recover defendants’ profits as damages from the misappropriation under an “unjust enrichment” theory. By contrast, this Comment argues that such an award provides a windfall to plaintiffs and contributes to suboptimal social outcomes. These include overcompensating plaintiffs and incentivizing …
