In The Mood For Creativity: Exploring Exposure To Humor And Creative Output, Sarah Lee

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of these three studies was to replicate prior findings, namely, that positive moods can improve creative performance (Baas et al., 2008) as well as to test whether humor provides a creative advantage relative to a neutral emotional state. Three studies were conducted using sets of ten memes as the mood induction stimuli. Participants were assigned to either a positive, humor, or neutral condition in study one. Study two added an irony condition and study three added four parallel explanation conditions (i.e., positive explain, humor explain, neutral explain, irony explain). Participants were assigned to either a positive, humor, neutral, …

Toward Carbon Neutrality: The Modeling And Implementation Of An Algal Carbon Capture System, Elizabeth Zanin Flanagan Dec 2021

Toward Carbon Neutrality: The Modeling And Implementation Of An Algal Carbon Capture System, Elizabeth Zanin Flanagan

All Theses

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from anthropogenic sources are causing widespread ecological disruptions. The uptake of CO2 by aquatic photoautotrophs is one strategy for carbon capture to mitigate these emissions. The objectives of this thesis were to investigate carbonate chemistry and algal growth equations to improve MATLAB model predictive capability in a closed-reactor system and to develop, design, and evaluate a non-fossil fuel technology and strategy for operation of the Algal Carbon Capture System (ACCS). A dynamic growth model based on carbon-limited algal specific growth rate with Monod kinetics, considering CO2, bicarbonate (HCO3), and carbonate (CO32-) as substitutable substrates, provided the …

The Role Of Package Design Typicality On A Hand Sanitizer Purchase, Ami Lee Frierson Dec 2021

The Role Of Package Design Typicality On A Hand Sanitizer Purchase, Ami Lee Frierson

All Theses

ABSTRACTCategory visual codes are visible themes that appear across a category, defining what is typical for that category. In package design, these visual codes may include the shape, size, font, color, or material of the packaged products seen on shelves. Generally, research has shown that atypical designs do not stand out to consumers; they go unseen since consumers are only looking for specific characteristics within that category. However, many studies indicate that consumer perception of atypical package design is moderated by several other variables that influence purchase decision. In March 2020, the Food and Drug Administration passed a temporary policy …

The Game Of Life: How Playing Gamified Interactive Narratives Affects Career Planning In Cambodia, Lauren B. Frank, Paul Sparks, Sheila T. Murphy, Lizzie Goodfriend, Paul Falzone

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

To improve economic opportunity in Cambodia, we used social cognitive theory to develop gamified, interactive narratives using mobile phones. Participants guided their chosen character toward their “dream job” goal while encountering a series of barriers along the way. Participants (N = 1,625) were randomly assigned to one of four message frequency experimental conditions: a no-play control condition or playing the interactive narrative one, two, or five times. Compared with not playing the interactive narrative (control), those who played showed higher perceived self-efficacy, response efficacy, and behavioral intentions. Playing more times was associated with less attentional focus and enjoyment, but greater …

Bargaining For Integration, Shirley Lin Dec 2021

Bargaining For Integration, Shirley Lin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to restructure exclusionary environments upon the request of their employees with disabilities so that they may continue working. Under a virtually unexamined aspect of the mandate, however, the parties must negotiate in good faith over every accommodation request. This “interactive process,” while decentralized and potentially universal, occurs on a private, individualized basis.

Although the very existence of the mandate has been heavily debated, the scholarship has yet to acknowledge that the ADA is actually ambivalent to individuals’ relative power to effect organizational change through bargaining. This Article is the first to critique …

A Fistful Of Nil: Have We Entered A “Wild West” Recruiting Era?, Marshall Magnusen, Samuel Y. Todd

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Changes about the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy impacted the world of college sports in the summer of 2021. Emerging from the dust of this seismic event was an apparent new frontier for athletes, coaches, and universities to explore. In the eyes of many, college sports had now entered a “Wild West” frontier because of NIL, especially as it pertains to recruiting athletes. But what does that really mean, “Wild West”? And further, if such a comparison is at least somewhat accurate, are there lessons that can be learned from other sectors who likewise …

Reframing The Collegiate Facilities Arms Race: The Looming Impact Of Nil And Conference Realignment, Jeffrey Petersen, Lawrence W. Judge

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Amidst the backdrop of an ongoing global pandemic, the summer of 2021 brought forth two events teetering the Division I college sport landscape at the precipice of unprecedented change due to two fundamental shifts: the first being the opening of revenue streams to collegiate athletes through use of name, image and likeness (NIL), and the second being the latest round of athletic conference realignment. With the impacts of these changes just beginning to be manifested, it is important to consider how these potentially seismic shifts in the collegiate landscape may influence existing issues of prior scholarly examination as well as …

Barriers To Resource Access: The Need For Social Workers As Cultural Brokers In Hispanic Immigrant Communities, Leslie Noemy Reyna Dec 2021

Barriers To Resource Access: The Need For Social Workers As Cultural Brokers In Hispanic Immigrant Communities, Leslie Noemy Reyna

Social Work Theses - Archive

Although the U.S. has more immigrants than any other country in the world (Budiman, 2020), there exists inequality in resource access among U.S. born and immigrants. The inequality has been created and maintained by the development of barriers such as idealization assimilation, forced acculturation, anti-immigrant sentiment and the limitations developed within immigrant serving organizations. Immigrants have tried to overcome these barriers through brokering by brokering through assimilation, brokering through their children and brokering through community health workers known as promotoras. Although the possibility of brokering exists, the question remains: how can immigrants achieve access to resources in a society designed …

A biological research framework to define Alzheimer’ disease with dichotomized biomarker measurement was proposed by National Institute on Aging–Alzheimer’s Association (NIA–AA). However, it cannot characterize the hierarchy spreading pattern of tau pathology. To reflect in vivo tau progression using biomarker, we constructed a refined topographic 18F-AV-1451 tau PET staging scheme with longitudinal clinical validation. Seven hundred and thirty-four participants with baseline 18F-AV-1451 tau PET (baseline age 73.9 ± 7.7 years, 375 female) were stratified into five stages by a topographic PET staging scheme. Cognitive trajectories and clinical progression were compared across stages with or without further dichotomy of amyloid status, …

The Demands Of Encounter In A Globalized Community Of Scholars: Shedding Light On The Place Of Trust In The Ritual Of Knowledge Creation, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai Dec 2021

The Demands Of Encounter In A Globalized Community Of Scholars: Shedding Light On The Place Of Trust In The Ritual Of Knowledge Creation, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

As institutions of learning become more diverse in their members and their curricula offerings, it has become necessary to articulate the demands of encounter. A distinction must be made between meeting and encounter. The former refers to a choreographed proximity of bodies. The latter refers to the totality of what it means to be human – a being intricately linked to other beings through life-giving webs of relationships. Therefore, transformative education must be grounded in the ritual of encounters because such a ritual allows for the possibility for new discourses that lead to knowledge creation. Such discourses allow for a …

Expression And Purification Of Cytochrome 2u1 And Canine 1a2 And Metabolism Of Caffeine By Cytochrome 1a2, Brenda M. Wekesa

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Cytochrome P450 enzymes are a large family of membrane heme proteins involved in eliminating drugs and the synthesis or elimination of steroids, eicosanoids, and vitamins. CYP2U1 is one of the poorly characterized P450 enzymes classified as orphan cytochrome P450 with unknown exact biological function. It is expressed in the brain and thymus as a catalyst in the hydroxylation of arachidonic acid. Unlike other cytochrome P450s, CYP2U1 is a bit unusual with forty extra amino acids. If a mutation occurs, it can lead to an early onset inherited disorder of the central nervous system called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias (HSP). Most of …

Recombinant Production And Purification Of Green Fluorescent Protein (Gfp)-Fused Metal Binding Protein For Palladium Nanoparticle Synthesis, Shadrach Ibinola Dec 2021

Recombinant Production And Purification Of Green Fluorescent Protein (Gfp)-Fused Metal Binding Protein For Palladium Nanoparticle Synthesis, Shadrach Ibinola

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In lieu of chemical and physical methods, biologically guided synthesis is increasingly used as a cost-effective medium for the fabrication of nanoparticles (NP). Recently, a palladium metal binding sequence Pd4 (TSNAVHPTLRHL) has been demonstrated to be instrumental in the production of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. Although, by eliminating the additional cost of purification of the protein, the crude lysate of E. coli containing Pd specific protein has been proven to be a viable cost-effective means for the synthesis of Pd NP, studies have not be done to ascertain the comparative catalytic activity of nanoparticles synthesized from both clarified lysate and pure …

Compound-20 (Analog Of Curcumin) Prevents Acrolein-Induced Changes In Rats, Nelson Chijioke Nwaiwu Dec 2021

Compound-20 (Analog Of Curcumin) Prevents Acrolein-Induced Changes In Rats, Nelson Chijioke Nwaiwu

Theses (2016-Present)

Research has shown that acrolein, a known environmental pollutant, contributes to generation of free radicals leading to oxidative stress and physiological damage. Curcumin has been known to improve damages from oxidative stress due to its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been reported that to exert such an effect, a large dose of curcumin needs to be consumed on daily bases due to its high excretion through kidney. Here in collaboration with Dr. Chelliah from department of pharmaceutical, an analog form of curcumin (compound-20) was synthesized with promising more potent activity and absorption. The objective of this study was to …

V-Myb Avian Myel Oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (Mybl1) Knockdown And Its Role In A Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Nabras Mahmoud Abdulrahman Dec 2021

V-Myb Avian Myel Oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (Mybl1) Knockdown And Its Role In A Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Nabras Mahmoud Abdulrahman

Theses (2016-Present)

Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is defined as negative for three genes, estrogen receptor (ESR), progesterone receptor (PR) and Human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2-neu) genes. Previous data show the V-Myb Avian Myel oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (MYBL1) gene is over-expressed in Triple negative breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB231). MYBL1 belongs to the MYB family of genes which are transcription factors and proto-oncogenes which are associated with cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and differentiation, all of which are key events associated with cancers. It could be that MYBL1 contributes to these same processes in TNBC. Instead of studying MYBL1’s …

The Pandemic As Political Opportunity: Jokowi’S Indonesia In The Time Of Covid-19, Charlotte Setijadi Dec 2021

The Pandemic As Political Opportunity: Jokowi’S Indonesia In The Time Of Covid-19, Charlotte Setijadi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In mid-2021, the Delta strain of the Covid-19 virus caused a second wave of transmissions and deaths in Indonesia at a scale much greater than what was seen in 2020. In this paper, I examine what the Indonesian government’s handling of the Covid crisis in 2021 reveals about the priorities of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), as well as his political agenda and attitude towards the country’s democracy, as he strives to cement his legacy. I argue that, while devastating, the Covid-19 pandemic has given Jokowi the opportunity to push through long-planned economic and political reforms. Furthermore, I contend that, under …
