Design A System Of Secure Random Number Generators By Random Coupling With The Future, Farnaz Solatikia Jan 2021

Design A System Of Secure Random Number Generators By Random Coupling With The Future, Farnaz Solatikia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) play an important role in both areas of computersimulation and computer security. For PRNGs in computer security applications, the securityconcern is extremely important. In recent years, there have been many PRNGs proposed in the areaof computer simulation satisfying the nice properties. However, most of them are linear generators, thus sharing the same weakness in predictability. The major aim of this study is to propose threegeneral class of secure generators, called RCF(Random Coupling with Future), Dual RCF, RCFShufflinggenerators, to obtain a secure generator that would inherit the nice properties.Proposed generators are suitable for both simulation and security applications. …

Comparing Passenger Satisfaction, Employees’ Perspective And Performance On Quality And Safety Indicators: A Field Study, Luca D’Alonzo, Maria Chiara Leva, Edgardo Bucciarelli

Articles

This paper aims to analyze the impact that different attributes related to a Regional Airport service and the socio-economic factors of the passengers have on the passenger’s overall satisfaction. The study also compared passenger and employee satisfaction in relation to the service offered by the airport, to identify possible critical areas of improvement. An Ordinal Logistic Regression (OLR) approach was used to model how the attributes considered for qualifying airport services and the socio-economic variables impact the predicted variable (i.e., passenger satisfaction). Furthermore, the results were triangulated to include quality and safety performance indicators as an objective anchor point for …

Near-Field Propagation Analysis For Vivaldi Antenna Design: Insight Into The Propagation Process For Optimizing The Directivity, Integrity Of Signal Transmission, And Efficiency, Ha Hoang, Matthias John, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann

Articles

Refined optimization of complex curve–linear-shaped radiators, such as traveling-wave Vivaldi antennas, can be achieved by considering simulated near fields to interpret in detail the structural influences of a design. The relationships between the space and time distributions of electromagnetic (EM) energy clusters and the geometric features are revealed with appropriate use of impulse response analysis combined with the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. This article reports a deeper approach when applied to the adjustment of the geometric features of a traveling-wave antenna based on an analysis of near-field propagation features.

Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui Jan 2021

Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui

DNP Scholarly Projects

Readmission rates in hospitals across the country are at an all-time high. Patients being
discharged from the hospital may feel fearful, especially if they are experiencing a new onset of
illness. Many patients wonder how they will deal with or manage their illness once they return
home. The goal for hospitals should be to reduce readmissions by addressing the factors that
impact readmission. Improved care coordination is one of the goals of transitional care. Patients'
functioning and quality of life increase when hospital readmissions are reduced. Readmissions
can be reduced by addressing care management before and after discharge in all …

Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics: Spillover Effects Of Anti Discrimination And Anti Violence Policies, Gokhan Kumpas Jan 2021

Three Essays In Applied Microeconomics: Spillover Effects Of Anti Discrimination And Anti Violence Policies, Gokhan Kumpas

Doctoral Dissertations

In this research, I examine the intended and unintended consequences of three highly debated policies at the state and federal level: enactment of Title IX, state anti-bullying laws, and warrantless arrest laws aimed at curbing domestic violence. My first essay examines the causal relationship between athletic participation and means-tested program participation. I use the variation in the implementation of Title IX and find that a 30 percentage-point increase in female athletic participation induced by Title IX increased program participation among 25 to 40-year-old females by 2.8 percentage-points. This effect persists across SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid recipiency. Event study analysis and …

The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese Jan 2021

The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese

Doctoral Dissertations

Sound can propagate great distances underwater and is an important mode for marine life to obtain information. Human activities in the ocean such as global shipping, coastal construction, gas and oil exploration, and mapping navigation routes intentionally and unintentionally emit sound into the ocean, potentially interacting with marine life. Therefore, it is essential that the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life and the ambient marine acoustic environment be understood. Most of the work, to date, has focused on the impact of low-frequency (<1 kHz) sources such as shipping noise, which is ubiquitous in the ocean, and mid-frequency (1-10 kHz) sources such as naval sonar, to which many marine mammals have shown to be sensitive. The effect of these sources can be as salient as a mass stranding event or as benign as an animal swimming away from a source of noise with no other effect. Less work has focused on higher frequency sources (>10 kHz), including ocean-mapping sonar systems. However, most marine mammals, namely toothed whales (odontocetes), are capable …

An au- tonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) can house scientific instruments, other vessels, and various payloads allowing access to remote or otherwise di cult to access locations. Team 16 has developed a novel …

Social Justice And Evolutionary Biology: A Natural Fit, David I. Upegui Jan 2021

Social Justice And Evolutionary Biology: A Natural Fit, David I. Upegui

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is an extended prescription for the inclusion of social justice in high school biology (HSB) curricula. Chapter 1 is context: a review of social injustice (mainly racism) in the US, and the specious scientific justifications for it. Chapter 2 explores how three veteran teachers introduce social justice in HSB classes. A case-study, semi-constructed interview-based approach is used. Chapter 3, the culmination of these ideas, adduces a practical curriculum module that provides the theory, lessons and activities for HSB student exploration the inferior science used to sustain racial inequities. The dissertation thus reviews the moral imperatives for introducing social …

Self-Gravitating Fermi-Dirac And Bose-Einstein Clusters With Planar, Cylindrical, And Spherical Symmetry, Michael A. Kirejczyk Jan 2021

Self-Gravitating Fermi-Dirac And Bose-Einstein Clusters With Planar, Cylindrical, And Spherical Symmetry, Michael A. Kirejczyk

Open Access Dissertations

We investigate self-gravitating clusters of an ideal Bose-Einstein gas with nonrelativistic energy-momentum relation and Fermi-Dirac gas with both relativistic and nonrelativistic energy-momentum relation. The clusters are subject to Newtonian gravity and are considered to be at thermal and mechanical equilibrium. We examine clusters with planar, cylindrical, and spherical symmetry in varying spatial dimension. By combining the conditions of thermal and mechanical equilibrium we derive a deferential equation for the fugacity, from which we calculate density profiles. Our work focuses primarily on the acquisition and analysis of these density profiles, as well as an energetic description of the problem mainly through …

Massively Parallel Stochastic Terrain Models In Undersea Mapping And Navigation, Kristopher Krasnosky Jan 2021

Massively Parallel Stochastic Terrain Models In Undersea Mapping And Navigation, Kristopher Krasnosky

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis examines ways to improve the quality of bathymetric maps generated from multibeam sonar data. In particular, it focuses on techniques for improving the real time computation of bathymetric models and related navigation solutions. Currently, there are many computational limitations that render applications such as path planning and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) unfit for real time use on vehicles in the field. Much of the work presented here focuses on re-framing previously proposed mapping and navigation solutions in a way conducive to massively parallel processing on a graphics processing unit (GPU).

Terrain models produced from multibeam sonar data …

Development Of A Low-Overhead And Transceiver-Integrated Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer, Thomas Mauldin Jan 2021

Development Of A Low-Overhead And Transceiver-Integrated Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer, Thomas Mauldin

Open Access Dissertations

Optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs) are the most widely used tool to diagnose an optical fiber in a telecommunication network; however, current OTDR systems cannot be efficiently utilized in industry due to their modularized design and bandwidth limitations. Furthermore, even when used as a standalone diagnostic technique, they lack the ability to have high spatial resolution and dynamic range concurrently which is essential for troubleshooting fiber optic cables in both shortreach networks, such as those in a datacenter, as well as long-haul networks, such as fiber-to-the-home. This study tackles these limitations by taking a statistical approach to replace the required high-end …

Characterizing The Seasonal And Environmental Effects On High Frequency Acoustic Fish Tag Detection In Shallow Water Settings, Jacob Bonney Jan 2021

Characterizing The Seasonal And Environmental Effects On High Frequency Acoustic Fish Tag Detection In Shallow Water Settings, Jacob Bonney

Open Access Master's Theses

Networks of high frequency (69kHz) acoustic fish tracking tags and receiver arrays are commonly used by marine biologists and fisheries management programs to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of a marine species. Despite the widespread use of these networks for monitoring fish movement ecology, there is often limited information to inform suitable receiver array spacing for optimal detection probability, or confidence estimates in tag detections. This is further confounded by the effects that seasonal and environmental changes can have on acoustic propagation. To evaluate these effects, the effective range of high frequency acoustic transmitters for medium and large fish …

Using A Digital Application To Refresh Knowledge Of Abuse For Individuals With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Thomas J. Howard Iii Jan 2021

Using A Digital Application To Refresh Knowledge Of Abuse For Individuals With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Thomas J. Howard Iii

Open Access Master's Theses

Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) are abused more frequently than individuals without disabilities. One potential reason for this discrepancy, is the low rate at which instances of abuse are reported by those with I/DD. It has been shown that learning about abuse and how to report it, can cause an individual with I/DD to feel more confident about reporting any future instances of abuse. Within this work a digitized version of the current in-person abuse prevention training program, called the Awareness and Action (A&A) training, is developed and evaluated. The hope is that providing an application capable of refreshing an …

Activity Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae By Single Entity Electrochemistry, John Lutkenhaus Jan 2021

Activity Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae By Single Entity Electrochemistry, John Lutkenhaus

Graduate Research Posters

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, antibiotics decrease in effectiveness as bacteria gain resistance for previously treatable illnesses. Currently, antibiotic susceptibility is typically carried out via the Kirby-Bauer method. Even with automation, this process requires two incubation periods so a less time-consuming technique is desirable. Single entity electrochemistry (SEE) detects changes in current when collisions of individual particles at an ultramicroelectrode (UME) are linked with an electrochemical event. Our group has obtained step-like and spike-like responses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at the UME surface as a result of adsorption and desorption, respectively. This response is due to the …

Transcriptional Repressor Protein Based Macrolide Biosensor Development With Improved Sensitivity, Jayani A. Christopher Jan 2021

Transcriptional Repressor Protein Based Macrolide Biosensor Development With Improved Sensitivity, Jayani A. Christopher

Graduate Research Posters

Macrolide antibiotics are in high demand for clinical applications. Macrolides are biosynthesized via giant assembly line polyketide synthases (PKS) which are arranged in a modular fashion. Combinatorial biosynthetic methods have been used to produce diversified macrolides by reprograming these modules and modifying tailoring enzymes required for post synthetic modifications. However it is challenging due to the size and complexity of PKSs. To overcome this challenge, new enzymes for macrolide diversification could be obtained by directed evolution where a large number of enzyme variants need to be screened. Therefore it is important to develop high throughput screening methods to identify the …

Collisions Or Adsorption: An Electrochemical Random Walk Decides, Junaid U. Ahmed, Julio C. Alvarez

Graduate Research Posters

Current-time recordings of toluene microdroplets emulsified in water and containing 20 mM Ferrocene (Fc), show multiple electrochemical peaks from oxidation of Fc on disk microelectrodes (5μm-diameter). The average droplet diameter (~0.7 μm) determined from area integration of the peaks was close to Dynamic Light Scattering measurements (~1 μm). Random walk simulations were performed deriving equations to simulate droplet electrolysis using the diffusion and thermal velocity expressions established by Einstein. The simulations show that multiple droplet-electrode collisions, lasting ~0.11 μs each, occur before a droplet wanders away. Updating the Fc-concentration at every collision shows that a droplet only oxidizes ~0.58 % …

Smartphones and Internet have become prevalent in our society with various applications in businesses, education, healthcare, gaming, and research. One of the major issues with the Internet today is its lack of security since an eavesdropper can potentially intercept the communication. This has contributed towards an increased number of cyber-crime incidents, resulting in an increase in users’ consciousness about the security and privacy of their communication . One example is the shift towards using private browsers such as Tor. Tor is a well-recognized and widely used privacy browser based on The Onion Router network that provisions anonymity over the insecure …

Petrology Of An Oxidized Blueschist Cobble From The San Onofre Breccia, California, Usa, Alaina A. Helm

Honors Papers

The mid-Miocene San Onofre Breccia (SOB) found along the southern California borderlands contains clasts of several lithologies including high-pressure metamorphic rocks commonly thought to be shed from the Catalina Schist. Sorensen concluded the San Onofre Schist was part of the Franciscan Complex, although at that time the Catalina subduction was considered to be part of the Franciscan Complex. In this study, a ~10 cm cobble collected from the San Onofre type locality was studied to describe its mineralogy and estimate its conditions of metamorphism. The cobble is composed of glaucophane (35%) + epidote (15%) + garnet (13%) + phengite (12%) …

Quality Of Sql Code Security On Stackoverflow And Methods Of Prevention, Robert Klock

Honors Papers

This paper explores the frequency at which SQL/PHP posts on the website Stackoverflow.com contain code susceptible to SQL Injection, a common database vulnerability. Specifically, we analyze whether other users give notice of the vulnerability or provide an answer that is secure. The majority of questions analyzed were vulnerable to SQL Injection and were not corrected in their answers or brought to the attention of the original poster. To mitigate this, we present a machine learning bot which analyzes the poster’s code and alerts them of potential injection vulnerabilities, if necessary.

Increasing The Value Of Information During Planning In Uncertain Environments, Gaurab Pokharel Jan 2021

Increasing The Value Of Information During Planning In Uncertain Environments, Gaurab Pokharel

Honors Papers

Prior studies have demonstrated that for many real-world problems, POMDPs can be solved through online algorithms both quickly and with near optimality [10, 8, 6]. However, on an important set of problems where there is a large time delay between when the agent can gather information and when it needs to use that information, these solutions fail to adequately consider the value of information. As a result, information gathering actions, even when they are critical in the optimal policy, will be ignored by existing solutions, leading to sub-optimal decisions by the agent. In this research, we develop a novel solution …

The Mathematics Of Mutual Aid: Robust Welfare Guarantees For Decentralized Financial Organizations, Christian Ikeokwu Jan 2021

The Mathematics Of Mutual Aid: Robust Welfare Guarantees For Decentralized Financial Organizations, Christian Ikeokwu

Honors Papers

Mutual aid groups often serve as informal financial organizations that don’t rely on any central authority or legal framework to resolve disputes. Rotating savings and credit associations (roscas) are informal financial organizations common in settings where communities have reduced access to formal financial institutions. In a Rosca, a fixed group of participants regularly contribute small sums of money to a pool. This pool is then allocated periodically typically using lotteries or auction mechanisms. Roscas are empirically well-studied in the development economics literature. Due to their dynamic nature, however, roscas have proven challenging to examine theoretically. Theoretical analyses within economics have …

Historically Black Colleges & Universities: A Model For American Education, Jennifer M. Smith Jan 2021

Historically Black Colleges & Universities: A Model For American Education, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

Hungry for freedom and knowledge, enslaved Blacks engaged in a massive general strike against slavery by transferring their labor from the Confederate planter to the Northern invader, and this decided the Civil War. In 1865, the North conquered the South, and slavery officially ended. Having been starved of the opportunity to learn to read or write, the recently emancipated Blacks were eager to learn. Within a year after slavery ended, however, Florida and other Southern states enacted laws to ensure the continuation of the vestiges of slavery in the United States. The legacy of slavery and racism evolved into an …
