The Impact Of Variable Curing Conditions On The Properties And Microstructures Of Mixtures Of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag And Circulating Q1 Fluidized Bed Combustion Ash, Shao-Heng Hsieh, Wei-Chung Yeih, Ran Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The use of Portland cement, an important construction material, is encountering growing challenges because of its adverse environmental impacts. In this study, a new hydration system without Portland cement, which blends ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) ash, was developed and tested. The variables included the effect of different types of CFBC ash, the mass ratios between CFBC ash and GGBFS, and different curing temperatures. The mortar properties were determined through the compressive strength test, absorption test, shrinkage test, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The main results were as follows: …
Supply Chain Management For Superyacht Construction In Taiwan, Chun Pong Wong
Supply Chain Management For Superyacht Construction In Taiwan, Chun Pong Wong
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In the last 20 years, Taiwan’s superyacht construction industry has performed well in the global market; however, numerous yacht builders still practice traditional supply chain management (SCM), which is often inefficient and regularly leads to time and cost overruns. This study aimed to answer two research questions: 1) what SCM challenges does the superyacht construction industry face? and 2) what SCM strategies and practices should be adopted to improve the efficacy and profitability of superyacht construction companies?
Numerous studies have explored supply chains (SCs) and SCM, but few have focused on the superyacht construction industry. Superyacht construction projects are highly …

A Marine Gis-Based Alert System To Prevent Vessels Collision With Offshore Platforms, Sheng-Long Kao, Ki-Yin Chang, Tai-Wen Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
How to effectively use an intelligent aid-to-navigation (AtoN) to prevent ships from accidentally colliding with offshore marine platforms (OMPs) is an important issue for maritime environment. This study proposes a novel collision alert system with three components to process Automatic Identification System (AIS) data in the cloud and broadcast AtoNs to ships in order to avoid collision with OMPs. The first component receives as input fuzzy linguistic variables (vessel size, relative speed, and approach distance) from the AIS data and calculates the radius of the guarding ring. The second component serves a Marine GIS (MGIS), where the system simulates the …

Figurative Meanings And Ideational Categorization Of Similes In Emily Dickinson’S Selected Poems, Ayad Hammad Ali, Omar Saadoon Ayyed
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The current paper attempts to analyze the similes which were recruited by the American poet Emily Dickinson. Simile is an indispensable literary device in poetry which involves comparing one object with the other object. It usually draws a comparison between two unrelated things, but the core of this comparison is to establish a conceptual theme that conveys a figurative meaning. Typically, simile is an explicit comparison incorporating an imagery, while metaphor represents an implicit comparison between two dissimilar things in order to incarnate a certain image as well. The basic objectives of this research is to conduct a figurative analysis …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Gully erosion is the most significant environmental threat in the field of natural resource management. Recently, one of the complexities of soil erosion studies in Iraq is the lack of information on the location of gullies, as well as relying on traditional methods in studying this type of erosion. The objective of this paper is to develop an adaptive tool for estimating gully erosion levels based on Python and modular building in ArcGIS environment. This tool can be used for dealing with the stream network and calculate the length of the valley, as well as divide the lengths of the …

Public health edicts necessitated by COVID-19 prompted a rapid pivot to remote online teaching and learning. Two major consequences followed: households became students' main learning space, and technology became the sole medium of instructional delivery. We use the ideas of "digital disconnect" and "digital divide" to examine, for students and faculty, their prior experience with, and proficiency in using, learning technology. We also explore, for students, how household lockdowns and digital capacity impacted learning. Our findings are drawn from 3806 students and 283 faculty instructors from nine higher education institutions across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. For instructors, we …
Behavior Of Entanglement Entropy Near Periodic Orbits In A Hamiltonian Dynamical System, Paul Bracken
Behavior Of Entanglement Entropy Near Periodic Orbits In A Hamiltonian Dynamical System, Paul Bracken
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Entanglement entropy growth is studied under a form of dynamics that is based on iteration. This approach allows the investigation of the role of decoherence in producing increases of entropy. This has important consequences as far as the study of decoherence is concerned. It is indicated that results are generally independent of Hilbert space partitioning. It is seen that a deep relationship between classical dynamical entropy and the growth of entanglement entropy exists in this kind of model. The former acts to bound the latter and in the asymptotic region, they tend to a common limit.

Analysis And Strategy Of Ai Ethical Problems, Zhaoxiang Zhang, Jiyu Zhang, Tieniu Tan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the core of the fourth industrial revolution, and it has brought challenges to ethics and social governance. On the basis of explaining the current ethical risks of artificial intelligence, the study furtherly analyzes the current consensus on ethics, governance principles, and governance approaches of artificial intelligence. Moreover, the study also proposes to take "co-construction, co-governance and sharing" as the guiding theory to gradually build a multi-dimensional ethical governance system, including education reform, ethical norms, technical supports, legal regulations, and international cooperation.

Constructing Ethical Order Of Digital World, Guoyu Wang, Hong Mei
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
With the digital transformation and the construction of digital China, a digital world parallel to the real world is being born. Historically, numbers have shaped our perception of the world and human beings. Digital transformation will further expand human cognitive space and means, release productivity, and change the way people think and behave. However, the virtuality and "outof domain" characteristics of people and things in the digital world have caused ethical problems in the digital world. Therefore, it is urgent to construct and improve the ethical order of the digital world. The article summarizes the existing three paths of scientific …

The demand for bone substitutes is increasing in Western countries. Bone graft substitutes aim to provide reconstructive surgeons with off-the-shelf alternatives to the natural bone taken from humans or animal species. Under the tissue engineering paradigm, biomaterial scaffolds can be designed by incorporating bone stem cells to decrease the disadvantages of traditional tissue grafts. However, the effective clinical application of tissue-engineered bone is limited by insufficient neovascularization. As bone is a highly vascularized tissue, new strategies to promote both osteogenesis and vasculogenesis within the scaffolds need to be considered for a successful regeneration. It has been demonstrated that bone and …

Rangelands worldwide have experienced significant shifts from grass-dominated to woody-plant dominated states over the past century. In North America, these shifts are largely driven by overgrazing and landscape-scale fire suppression. Such shifts reduce productivity for livestock, can have broad-scale impacts to biodiversity, and are often difficult to reverse. Restoring grass dominance often involves restoring fire as an ecological process. However, many resprouting woody plants persist following disturbance, including fire, by resprouting from protected buds, rendering fire ineffective for reducing resprouting woody plant density. Recent research has shown that extreme fire (high-energy fires during periods of water stress) may reduce resprouting …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the mixed rates of endophyte-free and infected seed on the dry matter yield and forage quality of tall fescue in Korea. In experiment, mixed ratios of endophyte-infected and -free seed were compared under the fourth cutting. Dry matter yield and forage quality of tall fescue were not influenced by mixed rates. The weed contents of botanical composition were slightly increased with high ratios of endophyte-free seed. The results demonstrated that endophyte-free tall fescue did not seem to be greatly weak under bad conditions.

Impact Of Management On Endophyte Free And Endophyte Infected Tall Fescue Cultivars In Ohio, C. D. Penrose, Reuben M. Sulc, J. S. Mccutcheon
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Ten cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, Schreb.) and one cultivar of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) were part of a study to determine changes in endophyte levels of fescue under two different styles of forage management: intensive and extensive. Included in the study were two endophyte infected-cultivars of tall fescue to compare interactions with endophyte free and infected cultivars. After three years, the results demonstrate that under high levels of management and non-endophyte infected crops prior to seeding, introduction of the endophyte can be reduced or delayed. Under lower levels of management and a smother crop into …

Grazing Endophyte Infested Tall Fescue And Changes In Bovine Blood Components And Gain, H. A. Fribourg, J. C. Waller, A. E. Schultze, B. W. Rohrbach, J. W. Oliver
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is utilized on more than 15 million ha of pasture in the eastern USA and over 80% of the plants in this area are infested with the endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum. Tall fescue toxicosis results from consumption of the infested (E+) grass host and is an important problem that causes considerable economic loss to producers. However, the agronomic attributes of tall fescue make it an attractive forage because of its ability to withstand cool temperatures, drought, poor soil conditions and intensive defoliation. There is need to understand mechanisms of animal physiology that are affected …
Critical Pedagogy In The Time Of Covid-19: Lessons Learned, Carol Christine Hordatt Gentles
Critical Pedagogy In The Time Of Covid-19: Lessons Learned, Carol Christine Hordatt Gentles
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The abrupt closure of universities due to the coronavirus pandemic caused unprecedented challenges for educators. They struggled to transition to online teaching almost overnight. This has raised questions about the readiness of Higher Education for digitalisation and hybridization of learning environments and focused attention on the renewal of teaching and learning models. It is incumbent upon those who practise critical pedagogy to join this conversation; the mandatory transition has raised difficult questions around how to ensure continuity of an agenda to offer students humanistic and democratic learning experiences in the new virtual reality. In this paper I offer a critical …
Hidden Engines Of Destruction: The Reasonable Expectation Of Code Safety And The Duty To Warn In Digital Products, Andrea M. Matwyshyn
Hidden Engines Of Destruction: The Reasonable Expectation Of Code Safety And The Duty To Warn In Digital Products, Andrea M. Matwyshyn
Florida Law Review
This Article explores a seemingly straightforward question: to what extent is a consumer entitled to know how digital products work and the likelihood of digital harm? In previous work, I have explored this question in the context of contract law and consumer consent. This Article approaches the question from a different legal context. Specifically, this Article considers whether a duty to warn should exist in connection with digital products. Even if we assume arguendo that a harmed consumer will have difficulty quantifying actual damages, an independent duty to warn on the part of the digital product creator or operator may …
Twombly Is The Logical Extension Of The Mathews V. Eldridge Test To Discovery, Andrew Blair-Stanek
Twombly Is The Logical Extension Of The Mathews V. Eldridge Test To Discovery, Andrew Blair-Stanek
Florida Law Review
The Supreme Court’s 2007 decision in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly has baffled and mystified both practitioners and scholars, casting aside the well-settled rule for evaluating motions to dismiss in favor of an amorphous “plausibility” standard. This Article argues that Twombly was not revolutionary, but simply part of the Court’s ever-expanding application of the familiar three-factor Mathews v. Eldridge test, used to determine whether procedural due process requires adopting a procedural safeguard. Twombly recognized that misused discovery can deprive litigants of property and liberty interests, and, thus, consistent with Mathews, requires a safeguard—dismissing the complaint. Based on this conclusion, …
Second-Order Proof Rules, Michael S. Pardo
Second-Order Proof Rules, Michael S. Pardo
Florida Law Review
Proof rules in law dictate when facts have been proven. They do so by specifying a level of proof such as by a preponderance of the evidence, by clear and convincing evidence, or beyond a reasonable doubt. The goals of the rules are to minimize errors (accuracy) and to allocate the risk of error fairly. I argue that the current rules fail to serve these two goals. Rather than suggesting we abandon these well-entrenched rules, I propose and argue for “second order” proof rules that will better align decision-making with its goals by providing criteria for applying the current rules. …

The Other Patent Agency: Congressional Regulation Of The Itc, Sapna Kumar
Florida Law Review
The United States International Trade Commission has recently experienced a dramatic increase in patent infringement investigations under § 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930. In fact, the number of patent enforcement actions submitted to the ITC has nearly doubled in the last five years. Patent holders are selecting this forum because of its speedy proceedings and its ability to award broad exclusion orders. This rise in ITC patent litigation, however, has revealed weaknesses in the structure of § 337. In broadening the provision to facilitate the enforcement of patent rights, Congress failed to consider the impact of this change …

Revisiting The Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary In Western Kentucky, Usa, Jarred Asselta
Scholars Week
This study revisits a Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) sedimentary section in western Kentucky to determine the nature of this boundary and the depositional environments. Although previous pollen work identified the boundary over four decades ago, to our knowledge no work has been carried out at this important K-Pg boundary site. A combination of stratigraphy and sedimentology were used to characterize the section in detail. Bulk and oriented samples were collected for grain-size, geochemical, and petrographic analysis. We relocated the site and measured 1.5m of section that includes the K-Pg boundary. Four distinct units were identified and from base to top of section …

Mapping Of Non-Native Invasive Plant Species Using Remote Sensing And Gis: Assessment Of Human Impact On Kudzu (Pueraria Montana) Spread, Harshitkumar Godhasara
Scholars Week
Remote sensing methods provide tools to identify and map non-native plants. Biophysical characteristics of plants can be utilized to recognize and distinguish non-native invasive plants from other native plant species. Kudzu is an invasive plant, which causes economic loss and decreases biodiversity. Moreover, kudzu doubles emission of nitric oxide and increases ozone pollution. The impact of human activities on the spread of noxious plant species like kudzu can be assessed utilizing remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) tools. Kudzu spread in the USA was mapped using in situ data including the actual coordinates of kudzu sites. Geographic distribution of …
