Commit messages are the atomic level of software documentation. They provide a natural language description of the code change and its purpose. Messages are critical for software maintenance and program comprehension. Unlike documenting feature updates and bug fixes, little is known about how developers document their refactoring activities. Specifically, developers can perform multiple refactoring operations, including moving methods, extracting classes, renaming attributes, for various reasons, such as improving software quality, managing technical debt, and removing defects. Yet, there is no systematic study that analyzes the extent to which the documentation of refactoring accurately describes the refactoring operations performed at the …

Dynamic Relationship Study Between The Observed Seismicity And Spatiotemporal Pattern Of Lineament Changes In Palghar, North Maharashtra (India), Biswajit Nath, Ramesh P. Singh, Vineet K. Gahalaut, Ajay P. Singh
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The Palghar region (north Maharashtra, India), located in the northwestern part of the stable continental region of India, experienced a low magnitude earthquake swarm, which was initiated in September 2018 and is continuing to date (as of October 2021). From December 2018 to December 2020, ~5000 earthquakes with magnitudes from M1.2 to M3.8 occurred in a small region of 20 × 10 km2. These earthquakes were probably triggered by fluid migration during seasonal rainfall. In this study, we have used multi-temporal Landsat satellite data of the year 2000, 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020, extracted lineaments, and studied the …

Plagiarism Of The Plates? The Validity Of Accusations Against Diderot's Encyclopédie (1751-1772), Ian Curtis
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
A literary monument of the eighteenth century, the French Encyclopédie (1751–1772) was a massive reference work written by a team of experts that aimed to depict arts and crafts in unprecedented detail. It eventually grew to contain twenty-eight large folio volumes but the journey there was filled with uncertainty due to royal suppressions from seditious and anti-religious ideas and accusations of plagiarism. Since 1951, scholars have studied one of these accusations, made by architect Pierre Patte against the plates, editor Denis Diderot, and the four publishers. This scandal, which is critical in the history of the Encyclopédie, has faded from …
The Utilization Of Enzymes And Enzyme Products For Antimicrobial Effects, Brandon Edward Burdette
The Utilization Of Enzymes And Enzyme Products For Antimicrobial Effects, Brandon Edward Burdette
Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial resistance is outpacing the discovery of novel antimicrobials. Therefore, it is essential to look at antimicrobials using novel methods. MTAN is a crucial enzyme for some bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. Transition state analog inhibitor design and fragment-based drug design are drug design approaches typically used independently, but combining these techniques yields inhibitors that bind tightly and are effective in pM concentrations. We demonstrate the efficacy of the combined techniques by investigating the inhibition of HpMTAN, which is an essential enzyme. Enzyme byproducts can also be effective for causing bacterial cell death, hydrolyzing GsdmD by caspases-1/4/5/11 results in an …

Water-Use Efficiency And Infiltration Under Different Rangeland Conditions And Cultivation In A Semi-Arid Climate Of South Africa, Hennie A. Snyman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine the impact of rangeland in different botanical composition classes (good, moderate and poor), on water-use efficiency (WUE: crude protein produced per unit of evapotranspiration) and soilwater content. The same measurements were also made on an undisturbed bare soil surface and soil cultivated twice per annum. Evapotranspiration was determined by quantifying the soil-water balance equation with the aid of runoff plots and soil-water content measurements done by a neutron hydroprobe. Water-use efficiency declined significantly (P ≤ 0.01) with rangeland degradation. Rangeland in good condition averaged a WUE of 0.28 kg crude protein ha …

Community Structure Of Serrated Tussock (Nassella Trichotoma) Infested Grasslands, Warwick B. Badgery, David R. Kemp, D. L. Michalk, W. Mcg. King
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is the most serious perennial grass weed in southeastern Australia, extending over more than a million hectares. Previous control techniques using herbicides and oversowing with competitive pastures are no longer feasible in many of the lower fertility, infested areas. New management solutions need to be found, based upon a better understanding of the ecology of this species. A survey was done to determine the community structure of serrated tussock infested grasslands. Winter growing C3 grasses were closely associated with serrated tussock, while C4 perennial grasses appeared not to be. It is not known if …

Valuing The Pasture Resource - Importance Of Perennials In Higher Rainfall Regions Of South Eastern Australia, P. M. Dowling, R. E. Jones, David R. Kemp, D. L. Michalk
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The premature decline of perennial grass based pastures in southern temperate Australia results in poor productivity and unstable pastures that allow invasion by less desirable weedy species and the potential for soil degradation. The loss of perennial species is attributed to overgrazing arising from an undervaluation of the pasture resource. Resowing pastures is largely uneconomic so maintenance of, or increasing the perennial, is dependent on improved grazing and pasture management practices. A key to changing perceptions is valuing the true worth of the perennial component. Results are presented from a model that takes into account the seasonality of production of …

Using ‘Traps’ (Transect Recording And Processing System) In Woody Weed Control Studies In Australia, P. V. Back
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The ‘TRAPS’ (Transect Recording And Processing System) methodology has proven to be a powerful and versatile tool for studying the effects of various woody weed control strategies in studies carried out in Queensland, Australia. ‘TRAPS’ allows the tracking of individual woody plants even when destructive control techniques such as bulldozing, ploughing and burning are used. This methodology also allows the investigator to discriminate between plants present before any treatment is imposed and plants recruited after the treatment.
Decomposable Model Spaces And A Topological Approach To Curvature, Kevin M. Tully
Decomposable Model Spaces And A Topological Approach To Curvature, Kevin M. Tully
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
This research investigates a model space invariant known as k-plane constant vector curvature, traditionally studied when k=2, and introduces a new invariant, (m,k)-plane constant vector curvature. We prove that the sets of k-plane and (m,k)-plane constant vector curvature values are connected, compact subsets of the real numbers and establish several relationships between the curvature values of a decomposable model space and its component spaces. We also prove that every decomposable model space with a positive-definite inner product has k-plane constant vector curvature for some integer k>1. In …

Winning Strategy For Multiplayer And Multialliance Geometric Game, Jingkai Ye
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Geometric Sequence with common ratio 2 is one of the most well-known geometric sequences. Every term is a nonnegative power of 2. Using this popular sequence, we can create a Geometric Game which contains combining moves (combining two copies of the same terms into the one copy of next term) and splitting moves (splitting three copies of the same term into two copies of previous terms and one copy of the next term). For this Geometric Game, we are able to prove that the game is finite and the final game state is unique. Furthermore, we are able to …

Lie-Derivations Of Three-Dimensional Non-Lie Leibniz Algebras, Emily H. Belanger
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The concept of Lie-derivation was recently introduced as a generalization of the notion of derivations for non-Lie Leibniz algebras. In this project, we determine the Lie algebras of Lie-derivations of all three-dimensional non-Lie Leibniz algebras. As a result of our calculations, we make conjectures on the basis of the Lie algebra of derivations of Lie-solvable non-Lie Leibniz algebras.

The Optimal Double Bubble For Density 𝑟ᵖ, Jack Hirsch, Kevin Li, Jackson Petty, Christopher Xue
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
In 2008 Reichardt proved that the optimal Euclidean double bubble---the least-perimeter way to enclose and separate two given volumes---is three spherical caps meeting along a sphere at 120 degrees. We consider Rn with density rp, joining the surge of research on manifolds with density after their appearance in Perelman's 2006 proof of the Poincaré Conjecture. Boyer et al. proved that the best single bubble is a sphere through the origin. We conjecture that the best double bubble is the Euclidean solution with the singular sphere passing through the origin, for which we have verified equilibrium (first variation …

Exploring The Relationships Among Stoichiometric Coefficients, Number Of Transferred Electrons, Mean Oxidation Number Of Carbons, And Oxidative Ratio In Organic Combustion Reactions, Pong Kau Yuen, Cheng Man Diana Lau
Faculty Publications
Combustion reactions, stoichiometry, and redox reactions are some of the basic contents in chemistry curriculum. Although the counting of transferred electrons is critical in redox reactions, assigning mean oxidation number of organic carbons (ONc) is not always easy. Even though the relationship between the oxidative ratio (OR) and ONc is known, the relationship between the number of transferred electrons (Te−) and OR has not been thoroughly studied. The H-atom method has already been developed to balance and deduct organic combustion reactions. It can be used further to help establish the relationships among the stoichiometric coefficients (SC), the number of transferred …

Cyclic Voltammetric Simulations On Batteries With Porous Electrodes, Xue-Fan Cai, Sheng Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are among the most widely used energy storage devices. Whole-cell modeling and simulations of LIBs can optimize the design of batteries with lower costs and higher speeds. The Pseudo-Two-Dimensional (P2D) electrochemical model is among the most famous whole-cell models and widely applied in LIB simulations. P2D model consists of a series of kinetic equations to model Li+/Li diffusion in working/counter electrodes and electrolytes, which are filled in the porous electrodes and separator, and reactions at the interface of electrolyte and active particles. The traditional applications of P2D model, however, are limited to the cases where …

Effect Of Aluminum Alloy Surface Modification On Adhesion Of The Modified Polyurethane Coating And Its Corrosion Protective Performance, Xian-Yin Kuang, Shao-Qiang Jin, Yan-Hui Cao, Yan-Mei Zhang, Shi-Gang Dong, Long-Hui Zhu, Li-Wen Lin, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The ordinary organic coatings on aluminum alloy usually encounter a problem of low adhesion to the substrate, which results in destruction and failure of the long-term protective performance of the anticorrosion systems. The surface modification of aluminum alloy is able to enhance the adhesion of organic coating on aluminum alloys, and to improve their protective performance. In this work, a combined surface modification of anodic oxidation and mussel adhesion protein/CeO2/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane composite film (MCA) was developed on the aluminum alloy. The adhesion of modified polyurethane coated on the treated aluminum alloy and its corrosion protective performance were evaluated comprehensively …

Functional Sulfate Electrolytes Enable The Enhanced Cycling Stability Of Nati2(Po4)3/C Anode Material For Aqueous Sodium-Ion Batteries, Shu-Jin Li, Zhi-Kang Cao, Wen-Kai Wang, Xiao-Han Zhang, Xing-De Xiang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Aqueous sodium-ion batteries show promising application in fields of large-scale storage of intermittent renewable energies owing to the earth-abundant sodium resources and incombustible aqueous electrolytes. Primary factors determining whether they can be commercially utilized are low cost and long lifetime. Among current electrode materials, NASICON-type NaTi2(PO4)3 arouses wide interests as an anode material for aqueous sodium-ion batteries as it offers a high specific capacity, fast Na-transport ability and reasonable working potential, however, suffering from insufficient cycling performance caused by severe dissolution of active materials in traditional aqueous electrolytes. In this work, a functional sulfate electrolyte …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Chromium oxide (Cr8O21) cathode material for lithium batteries was synthesized by thermal decomposition of chromium trioxide (CrO3) at high temperature. The electrochemical properties of chromium oxide depended on the time and temperature during the heat treatment. Pure phase chromium oxide was prepared, and the effects of heat treatment time on the structures and electrochemical properties of Cr8O21 were systematically studied. The first discharge mechanism of chromium oxide in lithium batteries was explored, and the results were similar to that in lithium-sulfur batteries. The crystal phases and electrochemical properties of the prepared …

Effect Of Glycol Based Coolant Pollution On Pem Fuel Cells Stack And Recovery Measures, Cong-Yi Zhu, Xiao-Hui Li, Quan-Quan Gan
Journal of Electrochemistry
As the heat conduction medium of fuel cell cooling system, coolant is very important for the thermal management of fuel cell stack. In practical application, coolant leakage into the stack often occurs. Due to the randomness of fault location of components, the location of coolant leakage is uncertain, which may occur on the cathode side or anode side of some or all single cells. The main effects of coolant pollution on fuel cell stack are as follows: the output of open circuit voltage decreases sharply, the consistency of single cells voltage decreases and so on, which seriously affects the normal …

Formation And Morphological Evolution Of Nanoporous Anodized Iron Oxide Films, Jin-Wei Cao, Nan Gao, Zhao-Qing Gao, Chen Wang, Sheng-Yan Shang, Yun-Peng Wang, Hai-Tao Ma
Journal of Electrochemistry
The preparation of iron oxide films with nanoporous structure by anodization has attracted much attention for its potential applications. However, the formation mechanism of porous structure during anodization is still unclear. In this paper, the composition of anodic current during the formation of nanoporous anodized iron oxide film was analyzed in combination with the current density-potential response (I-V curve) and the derivation of Faraday’s law. The results showed that the anodic current consisted of an ionic current (leading to the migration of ions to form oxide) and an electronic current (leading to the oxygen evolution), and the …

Compared with noble metal platinum (Pt)-based catalysts, inexpensive non-noble metal electrocatalysts have attracted extensive attention for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, chitosan as a kind of biomass resource rich in nitrogen and carbon was used to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) and N-C in-situ anchored by copper nanoparticles (Cu/N-C). The as-obtained N-C and Cu/N-C nanoparticles were successfully used as non-noble eletrocatalysts tested for ORR. Compared with the N-C, the Cu/N-C showed the high surface area of 607.3 m 2·g-1 with the mean pore size of 2.5 nm and the pore volume of 0.40 cm3·g-1 …

Study On The Uniformity Of Microgrooves In Through-Mask Electrochemical Micromachining With Moving Cathode, Li-Qun Du, Yi-Kui Wen, Fa-Long Guan, Ke Zhai, Zuo-Yan Ye, Chao Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
As a typical surface texture, microgrooves have broad prospects in the fields of mechanical engineering, bio-medicine, new energy and efficient heat dissipation of electronic products. Through-mask electrochemical micromachining (TMEMM) is widely used in the fabrication of micro-structures because of high processing efficiency and no residual stress. However, due to the edge effect of current distribution, there is often a serious dimension discrepancy problem in electrochemical machining of micro-structures. In order to weaken the influence of edge effect on the uniformity of microgrooves, the method that TMEMM with a moving cathode is presented. The current distribution in the electrochemical machining is …
