Phonological Rules In English And Arabic: A Comparative Study, Fadhil Athab Atshan Al-Juborry
Phonological Rules In English And Arabic: A Comparative Study, Fadhil Athab Atshan Al-Juborry
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This study sheds light on the relationship between phonological representation of words, phrases and forms, and their phonetic output by means of phonetic rules as proposed by Noam Chomsky and Halle (1968) with regard to phonological rules which are approached mathematically via notations. This practice, which is embodied visually in this paper, is more effective than rule statements so that the reader can get acquainted with the mechanisms these rules follow in order to activate the phonological images stored in the mind in conjunction with their phonetic perception.

Phonetic Patterns Of Vowel Transformations Between Characterization And Employment Taxonomic Phonological Approaches In The Light Of Modern Linguistics, Jwad Kathem Abd
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The vowel sounds in Arabic are distinguished by the many transformations and changes that occur to them. In all of this, they are subject to phonetic and phonological laws that change their sound patterns and syllabic presence in the word; However, those patterns have not received an independent study that combines short and long ones, despite the large literature that has been written about them.

Media Stylistics Linguistic Representation, Realization, And Perception, Hussein Huwail Ghayadh
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Communication can be accomplished through the processes of encoding (developing and sending messages) and decoding (turning messages into thoughts). Communication generally manifests itself within the perspective of some social situation which is responsible for setting the context for the conveyed interlocutors’ intentions. This paper looks at how the messages are encoded by the interviewee, how his linguistic choices are stylistically and constructive, and how his arguments are logically arranged. Not only the interviewee’s task, but this paper also detects how the audience perceives the intentions, how they match the linguistic choices with their referents (semantic or pragmatic referents). It also …

Criminal Protection Of Health Facilities In Iraqi Legislation (Comparative Study), Ghusn Manahi Khayun Alhasanawii, Latif Abdul Hussein Musa
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
In our research, we discussed the criminal protection of health facilitie as a comparative study where it has a distinct importance among the interests that the legislator aspires to protect by legal texts. Health facilities constitute a threat to the internal security of the country, especially after being accompanied by descriptions that make it inherent to influence that security, such as the terrorist description, but at the level of external security, these crimes were considered one of the means used by some countries to violate security, etc. I hope for other countries either to influence them only or to interfere …

Picturing A Storm Center In The Far East: Geopolitical Image And Representation Of Korea In Early American Newspaper Visuals, Jihyung Kim
Master's Projects and Capstones
This Capstone Project explores the image and representation of Korea in early modern American newspaper visuals during the period when Korea and the U.S. first began to engage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The American newspaper visuals, which interact with headlines, captions, and texts, are represented with specific patterns and features in close links to the newspaper's geopolitical discourse production, specifically the “Far Eastern Question,” which was produced by western powers and Japan. The visuals were intended to show Korea as a dangerous and uncivilized place, “a storm center in the Far East.” Such geopolitical visuals in …

A Local Lens On Global Media Literacy: Teaching Media And The Arab World, Katharina Schmoll
A Local Lens On Global Media Literacy: Teaching Media And The Arab World, Katharina Schmoll
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The globalization and transnationalization of media use have facilitated access to voices from the Arab world. Students and teachers in Western higher education can make use of these voices within and outside the classroom to enhance students’ knowledge of the region and challenge Eurocentric imaginations of the ‘Other’. Yet to ensure students engage with these Arab sources in a meaningful way, media literacy is key. Drawing on and challenging a framework of global critical media literacy, this article argues that media literacy is grounded in time and space, meaning an effective teaching of global media literacy skills supposes an awareness …

An Approach To Creative Media Literacy For World Issues, Abduljalil Nasr Hazaea
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This article introduces an approach to creative media literacy for world issues (WIs) such as Covid-19. In so doing, the article integrates four positions on discourse and media as terrible facets of globalization in the context of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The objectivist position deals with WIs as neutral discourse shared among humanity and distributed through English as an international language and educational media. The ideologist position treats creative media literacy as relations of power between global and local identities in the form of competing discourses associated with WIs. The rhetorical position reveals the hidden strategies used in global media …

Seeking Truth About Muslims: Critical Media Literacies In An Era Of Islamophobia, Matthew Deroo
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Across various forms of media, Muslims are often portrayed as a homogenous group prone to violence, yet scholars have increasingly called upon schools and teachers to transcend stereotypes and prepare students to understand Muslims in more thoughtful and nuanced ways. This qualitative case study recounts how students and a teacher in a high school multicultural studies class investigated problematic media materials about Islam sent by an organization called the Christian Seniors Association. Drawing upon Mihailidis’s (2014) 5A’s of Media Literacy heuristic, I analyzed field notes from classroom observations, interviews, and student produced artifacts. Findings revealed how a teacher’s use of …

Commit messages are the atomic level of software documentation. They provide a natural language description of the code change and its purpose. Messages are critical for software maintenance and program comprehension. Unlike documenting feature updates and bug fixes, little is known about how developers document their refactoring activities. Specifically, developers can perform multiple refactoring operations, including moving methods, extracting classes, renaming attributes, for various reasons, such as improving software quality, managing technical debt, and removing defects. Yet, there is no systematic study that analyzes the extent to which the documentation of refactoring accurately describes the refactoring operations performed at the …

An Analysis Of The Thai Translations Of Symbolic And Iconic Hybridity In Beloved And Things Falls Apart, Narongdej Phanthaphoommee
An Analysis Of The Thai Translations Of Symbolic And Iconic Hybridity In Beloved And Things Falls Apart, Narongdej Phanthaphoommee
Journal of Letters
The objective of this study is to investigate Thai translations of postcolonial and African-American literature that contain linguistic hybridity as one of their main characteristics. The study applies Klinger’s (2015) concepts of symbolic and iconic hybridity in narration to explanations of the writers’ and translators’ intention to abrogate English writing norms by using non-standard language. The findings reveal that the Thai translators were unable to maintain the linguistic hybridity found in the source texts due to their use of additional cushioning and grammatically correct Thai language. Hence, the intention of the source texts to abrogate standard English disappears from the …
The Use Of First- And Second-Person Pronouns In German, Wilita Sriuranpong
The Use Of First- And Second-Person Pronouns In German, Wilita Sriuranpong
Journal of Letters
First- and second-person pronouns are important for effective communication in many languages including German. Thus, learners and users of German as a foreign language have to be capable of using these address pronouns appropriately in various contexts and situations. This paper explores the usage of these pronouns in various contexts and with various meanings, arguing that there are many factors determining the use of these pronouns, especially du and Sie in contemporary German, such as age, social status, relationship between interlocutors and context of use. Therefore, in order to select appropriate address pronouns, learners and users of German need to …
The Optimal Double Bubble For Density 𝑟ᵖ, Jack Hirsch, Kevin Li, Jackson Petty, Christopher Xue
The Optimal Double Bubble For Density 𝑟ᵖ, Jack Hirsch, Kevin Li, Jackson Petty, Christopher Xue
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
In 2008 Reichardt proved that the optimal Euclidean double bubble---the least-perimeter way to enclose and separate two given volumes---is three spherical caps meeting along a sphere at 120 degrees. We consider Rn with density rp, joining the surge of research on manifolds with density after their appearance in Perelman's 2006 proof of the Poincaré Conjecture. Boyer et al. proved that the best single bubble is a sphere through the origin. We conjecture that the best double bubble is the Euclidean solution with the singular sphere passing through the origin, for which we have verified equilibrium (first variation …

Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Theses and Dissertations
An underexplored aspect of the abundant linguistic data available for computational analysis is the potential for conducting large-scale comparative analyses between different discourses as a more rigorous complement to existing methods. A significant obstacle in comparative studies is the requirement that a researcher distinguish between discursive distinctions that are superficial and those that reflect deeper, structural relationships between the discourses being compared. In this dissertation, I describe two methodologies for comparing discourses in terms of their underlying structures, drawing on distributional semantic models and information theory. These methodologies are explored within three case studies in which the discourses of several …

Jurnal Kajian Bimbingan dan Konseling
School counselors should possess multicultural competence as an important aspect in the implementation of guidance and counseling services. Counseling services require school counselors to empower students who have different cultural backgrounds from theirs. The Multicultural School Counseling Behavior Scale (MSCBS) is a scale to measure the school counselors’ multicultural competence represented by their attitudes and behavior in implementing guidance and counseling services in schools. This study aims to adapt the MSCBS into Indonesian, considering the limited multicultural competency measuring tool for school counselors that includes the attitudes and behavior of school counselors in counseling. The research subjects were 257 junior …

Evaluating The Use Of The L1 In A French Language Classroom, Joyce Esther Hiaumiti Guidi
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have explored how different balances of first language (L1) and target language (TL) use in a foreign language classroom impact students' fluency and proficiency in TL acquisition. Research has shown that the use of the L1 in a foreign language classroom is done in order to determine the most effective way to raise the proficiency of second language learners to the level that is expected within their classrooms (Lee & Muncie, 2006). The use of the L1 is not something that is uncommon, even in the highest levels of foreign language instruction, although some believe it could inhibit learner …

Justice Through Practice: Inquiry On The Development Of Preservice Teachers’ Teaching For Social Justice, Bethany Silva, Elyse L. Hambacher, Ruth Wharton-Mcdonald
Journal of Practitioner Research
This article reports on a collaboration among three teacher educators to facilitate pre-service teacher (PST)s’ equity literacy through a social-justice themed afterschool program for elementary-aged children that was embedded in PSTs’ coursework. The teacher educators engaged in practitioner inquiry (e.g., Anderson, Herr, & Nihlen, 2007; Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009), posing the question, “What happens when preservice teachers use justice-oriented children’s literature to facilitate discussions about inequity with young children?” We used inductive analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldaña, 2014) to observe themes across 17 PSTs’ written and videotaped reflections, collected over two semesters. Reflections pointed to a fear of the unknown …
