Studying Chinese Characters In A Web-Based Learning Environment: A Case Study Of Swedish University Students, Tao Yang, Man Gao

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

This survey study aims to investigate the perceptions learners have of the character-learning strategies they employ when taking a web-based course in Chinese. The seven Likert-scale statements are included in the questionnaire to examine learners’ opinions on the three character-learning strategies that are widely used in traditional campus courses. A total of 65 students who completed the beginner level ‘Chinese Characters’ web-based course at a university in Sweden completed the survey. The results suggest that students in web-based courses consider these three strategies to be just as helpful and effective as campus students; moreover, the more orthodox strategy – rote …

The Viability Of Bilingual Education Programs In Nevada, Alain Bengochea, Elizabeth Greer Jan 2021

The Viability Of Bilingual Education Programs In Nevada, Alain Bengochea, Elizabeth Greer

Policy Issues in Nevada Education: Policy Papers

Problem. Approximately 15% of emergent bilinguals (EBs; commonly referred to as English learners) in Nevada demonstrated proficiency in math and English language arts in contrast with the general student population, which achieved proficiencies of 42% and 55% in these subjects, respectively. Therefore, there is a critical need for programs that are responsive to EBs’ linguistic, cultural, and academic strengths. Purpose. This policy paper discusses the need for alternative educational supports for EBs, the effectiveness of bilingual education models compared with prevailing English instructional models, and the possibility of bilingual programming as a viable option in Nevada. Recommendations. Nevada could require …

The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan Jan 2021

The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Traditionally, English classes in Malaysian schools are rather teacher-centred and this method tends to impede students’ speaking skills. Coupled with the lack of vocabulary, it exacerbates their difficulty in using appropriate expressions in their speaking skills. Attempting to address these problems, the researcher used the Cooperative Learning (CL) method in her study because research has shown that it benefits greatly from the social interaction between students and improves the students' speaking skills, as its structured interaction design facilitates the accomplishment of group goals. This study examined the effectiveness of the CL framework in elevating L2 students’ vocabulary knowledge which consequently …

Archaeological Perspective On The Impacts Of Caravan Trade Expansion In East Africa: Emerging Alternative Histories, Thomas J. Biginagwa, Philbert Katto Jan 2021

Archaeological Perspective On The Impacts Of Caravan Trade Expansion In East Africa: Emerging Alternative Histories, Thomas J. Biginagwa, Philbert Katto

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The last two decades have witnessed an increase of archaeological research interest in the East African caravan trade, a topic that was traditionally exclusive to historians. Long-term empirical evidence currently generated by archaeologists continues to consolidate our understanding of the caravan trade, and helps to question some inferences previously drawn from colonial libraries. This paper presents archaeological evidence unearthed from the Northern and Southern caravan routes located in the corresponding areas in the contemporary northern and southern Tanzania. The paper engages material evidence to re-examine some of the consequences of the caravan trade commonly reported in historical writings. Doing so, …

Recruitment Of International Students Through A Synthesis Of English As A Second Language Instruction, Social Justice, And Service Learning, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

Universities across the U.S. have increasingly emphasized internationalization, leading to rising numbers of international students attending U.S. institutions of higher education. However, these students tend to gravitate toward larger research-intensive universities with many other institutions seeing no increase in international student enrollments. Little is known concerning how to attract international students to regional institutions lacking name recognition. To address the above and promote internationalization through increasing the presence of students from abroad, an academic department at a regional public U.S. college used needs analysis to develop a pilot program for Japanese university students (N = 13). The program involved a …

Introduction: We examined factors influencing anemia outcomes in rural children following implementation of a prevention program. Method: Mixed methods study of children, parents, and clinicians utilized statistical modeling and content/ ethnographic analysis. Retrospective chart abstraction evaluated treatments administered and measured hemoglobin in children aged 6 to 59 months (n = 161). Prospective interviews/questionnaires examined parent (n = 51) and clinician (n = 19) perceptions. Results: Anemia prevalence decreased by 21.2%. Predictors of increased hemoglobin were clinic visit number and age at first visit. Once anemia improved, children were likely to remain improved (P = .65). Despite favorable program perceptions, stakeholders …

Developing A Fuzzy Expert System To Determine The Levels Of Students' Ehealth Literacy, Rogheyeh Eskrootchi, Masoud Zavari, Mohammadreza Alibeyk

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The concept of eHealth literacy refers to the ability of a person to access electronic health information, evaluate the information, and apply the resulting knowledge to address or solve a health problem. Considering the uncertainties and the subjective nature of e-health literacy, determining the levels of students’ e-health literacy is a complex problem. The aim of this research is to develop and implement a fuzzy expert system to determine the level of eHealth literacy anytime and anywhere without accessing the experts personally. Thus, after studying the different methods of measuring people’s literacy level, the Digital Health Literacy Instrument was chosen …

Intergenerative Transdisciplinarity In “Glocal” Learning And Collaboration, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

In this report, authors from North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia share commonalities and differences in the lessons we are learning from COVID-19, especially about scholarship and collaboration. We represent different ages and disciplines hence our focus on intergenerational perspectives and transdisciplinary considerations. Our work is intergenerative{that is going "between to go beyond" by connecting creative sources of culture and focusing on the emergent, that is responding to changes in the context in which we work. And importantly in our view, we will point beyond whatever the next phase of COVID or even the next pandemic brings to a more …

An Adaptive Model To Support Biofeedback In Ami Environments: A Case Study In Breathing Training For Autism, Arturo Morales, Franceli L. Cibrian, Luis A. Castro, Monica Tentori

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Biofeedback systems have shown promising clinical results in regulating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) of individuals. However, they typically offer a “one-size-fits-all” solution in which the personalization of the stimuli to the needs and capabilities of its users has been largely neglected. Personalization is paramount in vulnerable populations like children with autism given their sensory diversity. Ambient intelligence (AmI) environments enable creating effective adaptive mechanisms in biofeedback to adjust the stimuli to each user’s performance. Yet, biofeedback models with adaptive mechanisms are scarce in the AmI literature. In this paper, we propose an adaptive model to support biofeedback that takes …

Persistence Like A Mother: Nursing The Narrative Toward Doctoral Completion In English Education—A Poetic Autoethnography, Krista S. Mallo Jan 2021

Persistence Like A Mother: Nursing The Narrative Toward Doctoral Completion In English Education—A Poetic Autoethnography, Krista S. Mallo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this poetic autoethnography, exploration of the feeling and the experience of developing persistence as an English Education doctoral student mother is expressed through analysis of artifacts gathered over a 20-year period inclusive of the years of graduate study, becoming and remaining an English teacher and professor, while paralleling the mothering years. A metaphorical parallel is established between breastfeeding and completing the doctoral degree, thus the phrase "nursing the narrative." Expression is storied through poetry in the voices of the persona of the English teacher, the mother, the doctoral student, and the intersectionality of the roles of each as the …

Fictional Characters And Their Discontents : A Prolegomena To Any Future Metaphysics Of Fictional Entities, Shamik Chakravarty Jan 2021

Fictional Characters And Their Discontents : A Prolegomena To Any Future Metaphysics Of Fictional Entities, Shamik Chakravarty

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In recent metaphysics, the questions of whether fictional entities exist, what their nature is, and how to explain truths of statements such as “Sherlock Holmes lives in 221B Baker Street” and “Holmes was created by Arthur Conan Doyle” have been subject to much debate. The main aim of my thesis is to wrestle with key proponents of the abstractionist view that fictional entities are abstract objects that exist (van Inwagen 1977, 2018, Thomasson 1999 and Salmon 1998) as well as Walton’s (1990) pretense view, which denies the existence of such entities. In the process, I propose modifications to these views …

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The aim of this paper is to delve into young learners’ perceptions towards peer feedback which is used during the applicability of the “process writing” approach in learning English as a foreign language as well as the impact of peer review on their writing performance. To this end, a study was conducted at the sixth grade of two Greek state primary schools involving two experimental (44 students) and two control (46 students) groups. Entry and exit questionnaires were administered to the participants of the study in order to explore their perceptions in the beginning and the end of the research …

The Essence Of The Linguistic Crisis In The Arab Mind Solution Strategies Vision, Emad Al-Zabin

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

This study assumes that we are suffering from a crisis of knowledge in the Arab linguistic mind as a result of the linguistic acquiescence and the mental sluggishness. This case occurs by the revealing our position in the global linguistic efforts that does not leave a dependency case in many of our researches. This study aims to explain the essence of the crisis by the analysis of its essential elements and searching in the elements of its solution as well. The study assumes that the essence of the linguistic crisis in the current Arab mind is a crisis of receiving …
