Negotiating Multilingual Writer Identity In The Dissertation: International Perspectives On Language And Writing Practices, A. Brooke Boulton
Negotiating Multilingual Writer Identity In The Dissertation: International Perspectives On Language And Writing Practices, A. Brooke Boulton
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Globalization and internationalization of higher education have perpetuated the dominance of English as the language of production and reproduction in doctoral education. English dominance considers the status of English as a lingua franca in academia. Multilingual students for whom English is not the first language must engage in complex language and writing practices to meet university and publication standards, globally. As writing is identity work, students must negotiate thought and writing in two or more languages to achieve meaningful self-expression and to represent authentic, authoritative voices in English. Data representing students from 17 different countries and speaking 14 different languages …

The Framing Of The Common Core State Standards In The New York Times And Chicago Tribune From 2014-2015, Conor Joseph Byrne
The Framing Of The Common Core State Standards In The New York Times And Chicago Tribune From 2014-2015, Conor Joseph Byrne
Research Papers
A narrative of optimism abounds in dominant U.S. culture regarding education as the “great equalizer” of society. As a result, the experience of the disenfranchised such as those with learning differences, English language learners, and racial minorities often go unnoticed or misrepresented. Other factors such as the role of big business and standardized testing in funding school districts avoid critical analysis, including in the mainstream media. In a content analysis of 120 articles from the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune covering Common Core State Standards from 2014-2015, this study discovers both newspapers fail to make significant mention of …
One Size Does Not Fit All: Addressing Adolescents’ Needs For Historically And Culturally Responsive English Language Arts Curriculum, Angela Mckellar
One Size Does Not Fit All: Addressing Adolescents’ Needs For Historically And Culturally Responsive English Language Arts Curriculum, Angela Mckellar
Masters Projects
In recent years, education initiatives have aimed to link school and teacher effectiveness to secondary students’ performance on standardized testing. Consequently, many schools have adapted curriculum to prepare students for the test. As a result, many publishers have filled a need by providing packaged or scripted curriculum seeking to streamline the education process. This project explores the ways in which English Language Arts (ELA) standardized curriculum influences secondary students’ motivation and teachers’ autonomy. An effective ELA curriculum must meet the diverse needs of all students and allow for teacher autonomy to modify curriculum when and where needed. To meet adolescent …

“Nothing Much Happens”: The Process Of Constructing Coherent Selves In A Tree Grows In Brooklyn And I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Laytham
English Senior Capstone
In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, respectively, Betty Smith and Maya Angelou vividly paint the places, people, and customs that contextualize Francie and Marguerite’s growth. In fact, the societies to which both the protagonists and the authors talk back contribute greatly to how they express themselves. The interplays between past and present and between personal and public all inform how Smith and Angelou describe and develop the stories of their younger selves. While it might sound strange to find such dynamism in something as apparently inert as written word, the works …
The Value Of Play-Based Learning In Early Childhood Classrooms, Brandice Tegrootenhuis
The Value Of Play-Based Learning In Early Childhood Classrooms, Brandice Tegrootenhuis
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The purpose of this literature review is to demonstrate the value of play-based learning in early childhood classrooms and encourage educators and policy-makers to focus more on this developmentally appropriate practice of learning through play in early childhood classrooms. The findings of this literature review are that play is an essential component in all areas of child development. The reviewed research suggests play and academic and social development are closely linked and indicate success in the areas of 21st century skills, literacy and language, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. The conclusion of this review includes recommendations for …
Naming And Re(Claiming) Feminism In Orthodoxy: Voicing The Gender And Religious Identities Of Greek Orthodox Women, Anne Marie Adams
Naming And Re(Claiming) Feminism In Orthodoxy: Voicing The Gender And Religious Identities Of Greek Orthodox Women, Anne Marie Adams
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a qualitative study of the effects of Greek Orthodoxy on the gender and religious identity meaning-making of five Greek-American women. The emergent themes from this study indicate that participants’ gender and religious identities were heavily influenced by the dueling tensions and contradictions between patriarchy and feminism, conservative traditionalism and modernity, and secular life and the religious community (i.e., family and church). Underpinning this study are Narrative Identity Theory and Feminist Standpoint Theory. Portraiture methodology was employed across three semi-structured interviews, as well as three written/video reflection journals to reveal how women, as articulated through their own perspectives, …

How Can Classroom Practices Support The Development Of Students’ Voices, Particularly Black Student’S Voices In Writing?, Kadiata Diallo , '21
How Can Classroom Practices Support The Development Of Students’ Voices, Particularly Black Student’S Voices In Writing?, Kadiata Diallo , '21
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Voice is power in and outside of the classroom. It is to the detriment of students of color that it has been so understudied. Voice is typically introduced to students in an English Language Arts (ELA) classroom as a set of rules and definitions. Choice, vocabulary, tone, and rhetorical devices are all elements of writing that are cited as crucial in cultivating one’s voice as a writer. However, discussions of voice often ignore contextual influences (e.g., race, class, gender) , and by extension what is at stake for students learning how to articulate themselves, especially students of color. To the …

Procedural Learning, Grammar, And Motor Skills In Children With Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Speech Sound Disorder, And Typically Developing Speech, Jenya Iuzzini-Seigel
Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
This case–control study sought to determine if (a) children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders (SSDs), and typical development would perform differently on a procedural learning assessment and (b) whether grammatical ability would impact group differences.
Method
Communication, motor, and procedural learning abilities were assessed in 48 children with CAS (n = 13), SSD (n = 20), and typical development (n = 15), between 43 and 97 months of age (M = 66 months, SD = 12 months).
Results
On average, children with CAS demonstrated grammatical and motor impairments and required …
Posterior Predictive Critique Of A Psychometric Bayesian Model For Assessing Aphasia, Ashlynn Crisp
Posterior Predictive Critique Of A Psychometric Bayesian Model For Assessing Aphasia, Ashlynn Crisp
Mathematics and Statistics Dissertations, Theses, and Final Project Papers
For persons with aphasia, naming tests are useful for assessing the severity of the disease and observing progress toward recovery. The Philadelphia Naming Test (PNT) is a leading naming test composed of 175 items. The items are common nouns which are one to four syllables in length and with low, medium, and high frequency. Since the target word is known to the administrator, the response from the patient can be classified as correct or an error. If the patient commits an error, the PNT provides procedures for classifying the type of error in the response. Item response theory can be …
Effect Of Mood On Humor, Virginia Randall
Effect Of Mood On Humor, Virginia Randall
Senior Honors Theses
Humor is a social tool that has been documented for hundreds of years with a plethora of studies being produced to attempt to piece together a comprehensive definition of the concept. Among these studies, there have been several analyses regarding the psychological, cognitive, psychobiological, and neural effects of humor, and how they are outwardly manifested. Additionally, several social contexts have been considered. In analyses of humor, several theories have been produced, many based off of figurehead concepts within the field of psychology.
Primary interest of this research study was in whether these studies and theories can support whether there is …
Investigating The Prevailing Worldviews Of American Public Education: A Brief Analysis And History, Chester Walker
Investigating The Prevailing Worldviews Of American Public Education: A Brief Analysis And History, Chester Walker
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis investigates whether the philosophies and worldviews underlying U.S. public education contradict or purposefully undermine Biblical Christianity. It provides readers with an understanding of the Biblical Christian worldview to enable them to analyze and contrast prominent worldviews of public education. Pragmatism and Marxism run rampant in public education today. Both strongly oppose fundamental tenets of the Biblical Christian worldview. To determine any purposeful anti-Christian agenda, the author examines the men behind the worldviews. Christianity maintains that ideas and practices in education originate from deeply-held, personal beliefs, which are passed on to students. Education is a means of discipleship to …
The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry
The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry
Senior Honors Theses
In 1906, the Russian probabilist A.A. Markov proved that the independence of a sequence of random variables is not a necessary condition for a law of large numbers to exist on that sequence. Markov's sequences -- today known as Markov chains -- touch several deep results in dynamical systems theory and have found wide application in bibliometrics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and statistical mechanics. After developing the appropriate background, we prove a modern formulation of the law of large numbers (fundamental theorem) for simple countable Markov chains and develop an elementary notion of ergodicity. Then, we apply these chain convergence results …
Teaching Lexical Stress: Effective Practice In A Mandarin Ell Context, Ethan Oliver
Teaching Lexical Stress: Effective Practice In A Mandarin Ell Context, Ethan Oliver
Senior Honors Theses
Current trends in teaching pronunciation to ELLs (English Language Learners) point towards a "top-down" approach. This refers to putting emphasis on the overarching prosodic features of English rather than the proper pronunciation of consonants and vowels. One of the most integral prosodic features in English is stress. Both lexical stress (stressed syllables within a word) and sentence stress (stressed words within a sentence) play an important role in the prosodic pronunciation of English. However, some languages, such as Mandarin, lack stress in their prosodic systems, instead employing features such as tonality. These languages both have overlap in their fundamental prosodic …
The Ineffectiveness Of The Reid Technique In Law Enforcement Interrogations And How A Non-Accusatory Model Of Interview Can Be Applied In Law Enforcement Interviews In The United States, Angie Chen
Honors College Theses
The research questions that this thesis explored were “Why the Reid Technique is Ineffective for Law Enforcement Interrogations?” and “How a Non-Accusatory Model of Interview Can Be Applied in Law Enforcement Interviews in the United States.” In recent years, the harmful effects of using a confrontational, adversarial interrogation method, such as the Reid technique, have emerged. These interrogation methods are based on pseudoscience. The effects of these types of interrogation methods can include psychological harm and false confessions. Professionals and officials in the law enforcement field are exploring new options for interviewing including non-accusatory methods such as the PEACE model. …

Eliminating Forced Labor In American Corporations And Their Supply Chain: Existing Solutions And Failures, Breann Hunt
Eliminating Forced Labor In American Corporations And Their Supply Chain: Existing Solutions And Failures, Breann Hunt
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The author of this article examines current judicial precedent pertaining to human rights violations perpetrated in the supply chains of American companies. The author argues that existing legislation is insufficient to prevent firms from profiting from forced labor. The author demonstrates the effect of forced labor upon the competitive landscape and illustrates the damage done to ethical companies forced to compete with low-priced competitors. By analyzing existing research on competitive injury and Antitrust regulation, the author thus proposes that there be a synthesis of third party research capabilities and legislation that would help prove competitive injury due to forced labor …
Persistent Inequalities, The Pandemic, And The Opportunity To Compete, Rachel F. Moran
Persistent Inequalities, The Pandemic, And The Opportunity To Compete, Rachel F. Moran
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
Even before the recent coronavirus pandemic, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status played a powerful role in allocating opportunity—in the public schools and elsewhere. The pandemic has laid bare the dimensions of this inequality with a new and alarming clarity. In this essay, I first will focus on the landscape of educational inequity that existed before the coronavirus forced public schools to shut down. In particular, I will explore patterns of racial and ethnic segregation in America’s schools and how those patterns are linked to additional challenges based on socioeconomic isolation. In addition, I will consider the role of language and …
