Krippendorffsalpha: An R Package For Measuring Agreement Using Krippendorff's Alpha Coefficient, John Hughes Jun 2021

Krippendorffsalpha: An R Package For Measuring Agreement Using Krippendorff's Alpha Coefficient, John Hughes

The R Journal

R package krippendorffsalpha provides tools for measuring agreement using Krippendorff’s α coefficient, a well-known nonparametric measure of agreement (also called inter-rater reliability and various other names). This article first develops Krippendorff’s α in a natural way and situates α among statistical procedures. Then, the usage of package krippendorffsalpha is illustrated via analyses of two datasets, the latter of which was collected during an imaging study of hip cartilage. The package permits users to apply the α methodology using built-in distance functions for the nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio levels of measurement. User-defined distance functions are also supported. The fitting function …

Community, Harana & Karaoke: Towards A Theatrical Design, Ryan Diaz Jun 2021

Community, Harana & Karaoke: Towards A Theatrical Design, Ryan Diaz

Masters Theses

Community, Harana, & Karaoke: Towards a Theatrical Design explores graphic design’s potential as theatrical staging for building community and practicing the difficult and complicated art of loving others through performance.

Studying graphic design as harana, the traditional Filipino custom of romantic serenade, offers a framework to view both mediums as social architectures that propose and transform proximities of relation between people. As in harana, graphic design facilitates in naming, grounding, and organizing social relationships; in taking these affective environments as content and form, both arts align with the nature of performance and staging. Through practice, research, and abstraction, the graphic …

Wounds Need Air, Camilla Jerome

Masters Theses

A personal essay in the first-person voice describes the artist’s lived experience navigating the American medical industrial complex with multiple misdiagnosed chronic pain disorders. The artist’s personal story spans thirty years and is contextualized by illness, gender, race, age, ability, class, and is grounded in the artistic expression of self. Uncertainty Wanted: Deconstructing Gender Gap In Parenting Mentality, Zimeng Xiang Jun 2021

Uncertainty Wanted: Deconstructing Gender Gap In Parenting Mentality, Zimeng Xiang

Masters Theses

Gender stereotypes propagate through generations like a loop without a clear start or end, constantly reinforcing and being reinforced by the constructed, gendered system of information around us. For this project, I take the start of parenthood - the moment when new parents begin to learn everything about newborn care - as a critical point to encourage gender-neutral parenthood and eventually, to fill the gender gap in parents’ mental load.

Remembering Chinatown: A Fusion Of Food, Identity, & Memory, Robert Yang Jun 2021

Remembering Chinatown: A Fusion Of Food, Identity, & Memory, Robert Yang

Masters Theses

In 2016, the Chinese American Restaurant Association recorded a total of 50,000 Chinese restaurants operating in the United States, far exceeding the number of McDonalds, Burger Kings, KFCs, and Wendy’s combined. In the near two centuries that Chinese people have been a part of the American fabric, our food has become one of the country’s most popular ethnic cuisines. While these restaurants stand as testaments to the tenacity and entrepreneurship of the Chinese immigrant, they are also reminders of the centuries of adversity Chinese Americans have endured. The racial divisions triggered by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 have resulted …

Exploring Principals’ Experiences With Social Justice Issues In Their Work As School Leaders, Djimtibaye Otalbaye Jun 2021

Exploring Principals’ Experiences With Social Justice Issues In Their Work As School Leaders, Djimtibaye Otalbaye

Dissertations

Social justice has taken on a special importance in education today, although it is not a new concept in terms of human history. Social justice is not a local issue, but exists in all parts of the world (Jean Marie et al., 2014). Differentiation among social environments of schools and increasing elements of diversity and roles of schools to create a socially just structure can be seen as main reasons for these issues (Turhan, 2010). Schools are therefore challenged to address the social conditions and hardships of students by responding to their needs (Avant, 2014).

The purpose of this basic …

A Quantitative Assessment Of Marital Quality Among Couples In Kerala, India, Grace Kochuparambil Jun 2021

A Quantitative Assessment Of Marital Quality Among Couples In Kerala, India, Grace Kochuparambil

Dissertations

The increasing number of divorces and domestic violence in Kerala, India points out the need to assess marital quality among couples in Kerala. The lack of assessment tools in the native language prevents evaluating Malayali couples' marital relationships. The purpose of the proposed study was to examine couples' marital quality in Kerala and validate the translated Marital Adjustment Questionnaire (MAQ) and Marital Quality Scale (MQS), the M-MAQ and the M-MQS, respectively. The instruments were translated into Malayalam through a forward and backward translation. A quantitative survey research design collected data from a criterion[1]based sample of 260 couples in Kerala using …

Présence Ou Absence Africaine, Françoise Naudillon Jun 2021

Présence Ou Absence Africaine, Françoise Naudillon

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Among the institutions created in the post-war years, Présence Africaine (1947) and Le Monde diplomatique (1954) share in many ways the same vision of the contours of the world to come, between decolonization and Christianity. At the heart of debates from the 1950s to the 1980s, the two publications animate at the same time as they organize the intellectual life of four decades in France and in the former colonies. Between ideological fraternities, Third World or Pan-Africanism, anti-imperialism or anti-colonialism, the journalists of Le Monde and the editors of Présence Africaine have pursued a dialogue made up of collaborations, connivance …

Penser La Perte Radicale Dans L’Atlantique Sud, Christian Uwe Jun 2021

Penser La Perte Radicale Dans L’Atlantique Sud, Christian Uwe

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The metaphor of the mangrove captures an aesthetic issue common to works of Glissant and Condé: how to write the geography of a radical loss and an unexpected digenesis. As Drabinski (2019) remarks, the Glissantian mangrove is the paradoxical place of an aesthetic of the abyss, which tries to capture the fragile birth instead of a loss without traces. Condé, for her part, makes the mangrove the symbol of a silent writing (Lachman, 2014) as well as of a land trapped in its own alienated history. As a recurring image in Caribbean literature – to the point of problematizing, most …

According to his credo that African literature remains fundamentally inseparable from its initial political goals, Boubacar Boris Diop constantly denounces and criticizes ceaselessly African political issues in his works. His collection of short stories, La nuit de l’Imoko (2013), deals primarily with the question of political evil and thus bears witness to the author’s literary project. This article examines some aspects of this question in La nuit de l’Imoko, in particular the representation of the President and the intervention of political power in the cultural world. Boubacar Boris Diop’s short stories are certainly devoted to tackle so-called African evil, …

In Guelwaar, film and novel by Ousmane Sembène (1923- 2007), humor often makes you smile; and when it is comical, it is ironic and parodic. These aspects highlight unusual or contradictory aspects, even serious situations. The aim of this caustic humor is to correct negative situations, especially to denounce the defects of hypocrisy and intolerance. The humorous strategy in Guelwaar is part of the Senegalese filmmaker-novelist’s perspective of a didactic project aimed at the whole of Africa.

The work of Théo Ananissoh is a quest for meaning: the meaning of life, the meaning of political embezzlement and, above all, the meaning of these deep motives which affect social and ontological consciousness. His aesthetic choice orients him towards detective novels with characters explicitly involved in machinery and political machinations, through which he aims to show, with the help of insightful but detached observation and an investigation aimed only at providing information, exactly how the state poaches/interferes in the lives of its citizens. This article deals with detective novels as depictions of criminal intrigue in the postcolonial state in …

Discours Critique Du Polar D’Afrique Francophone : Formes Et Enjeux, Adama Togola Jun 2021

Discours Critique Du Polar D’Afrique Francophone : Formes Et Enjeux, Adama Togola

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Since the emergence of detective fiction in African francophone novel in the 1990s, many critical studies have been devoted to it. However, there are a few stereotypes and themes that a certain critique of generic obedience brings to light when it comes to analyzing the aesthetic and epistemological value of the African thriller. Some of these studies are in fact limited to the ways in which many writers adapt general aesthetic conventions of this genre, without looking at the ways these authors innovate in their works. This study questions the foundations of critical discourse on African detective fiction and shows …

Comment Lire Un Texte Francophone? La Traversée De La Mangrove De Maryse Condé, Josias Semujanga Jun 2021

Comment Lire Un Texte Francophone? La Traversée De La Mangrove De Maryse Condé, Josias Semujanga

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This study is structed around three components. It begins with a brief reflection on the paradox of the existence in university education of two literary institutions – French literature and Francophone literatures – whose works are nevertheless written in the same language (French). Then the article proposes a transcultural and transnational approach to overcome such dichotomy – France and French-speaking peripheries – by a methodology based on the principle of unity in the diversity of the elements of the texts from three aspects: literary genre, language/speech, and intertextuality. Finally, this reflection is based on the study of the novel Traversée …

No Spanish In Cinderella’S Kingdom: A Situated Ethnography Of Disney World’S Engagement With Elena Of Avalor, Diana Leon-Boys Jun 2021

No Spanish In Cinderella’S Kingdom: A Situated Ethnography Of Disney World’S Engagement With Elena Of Avalor, Diana Leon-Boys

Communication Faculty Publications

Research indicates that Disney theme parks function as sites of ideological negotiation. This study builds on the research by examining Disney World’s incorporation of its first avowed Latina princess, Elena of Avalor. Bringing together discourses of Latinidad, theme parks, and media, this essay focuses on how the park incorporates Elena into its landscape at the level of production, representation, and audiences. I argue that Disney’s inclusion of Elena, and by extension Latinidad, is malleable, situated within the geographic setting, and dependent on various factors seldom disclosed by the conglomerate. Ultimately, Elena exists as an outsider within the Disney park …

Simplified Intuitionistic Neutrosophic Soft Set And Its Application On Diagnosing Psychological Disorder By Using Similarity Measure, Veerappan Chinnadurai, Albert Bobin Jun 2021

Simplified Intuitionistic Neutrosophic Soft Set And Its Application On Diagnosing Psychological Disorder By Using Similarity Measure, Veerappan Chinnadurai, Albert Bobin

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The primary focus of this manuscript comprises three sections. Initially, we introduce the concept of a simplified intuitionistic neutrosophic soft set. We impose an intuitionistic condition between the membership values of truth and falsity such that their sum does not exceed unity. Similarly, for indeterminacy, the membership value is a real number from the closed interval [0, 1]. Hence, the sum of membership values of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity does not exceed two. We present the notion of necessity, possibility, concentration, and dilation operators and establish some of its properties. Second, we define the similarity measure between two simplified intuitionistic …

Finding Home In Merry Hill: Appalachia Beyond The Mountains In Arnow's The Dollmaker, Adrienne Oliver Jun 2021

Finding Home In Merry Hill: Appalachia Beyond The Mountains In Arnow's The Dollmaker, Adrienne Oliver

Masters Theses

The migration of Gertie Nevels in Arnow’s The Dollmaker from Appalachian Kentucky to Detroit examines the tense relationship between two vastly different cultures forced together in the city. Gertie’s identity as a strong, capable Appalachian woman used to the agrarian lifestyle of 1940s Kentucky struggles to find roots in the mechanized world of Detroit. In the city, Gertie faces fervent rejection of her Appalachian culture. She finds that Detroit society encourages her to adapt to the cultural norms of the city and put away her Appalachian practices. However, Gertie’s ability to adapt to the social demands of the city does …

The Prevalence Of Grammar In Virginia Higher Education, Caroline Nicatie Stimpson Jun 2021

The Prevalence Of Grammar In Virginia Higher Education, Caroline Nicatie Stimpson

Masters Theses

This thesis describes why the prescriptive grammar model should be implemented in public education rather than the descriptive grammar model. For the purposes of this paper, prescriptive grammar refers to how words ought to be used, while descriptive grammar refers to how words are used by native speakers in natural settings. The central issue I address in this thesis is how prescriptive grammar enables students to read and write properly, heightens their linguistic knowledge, improves their ability to express themselves, and teaches them useful skills for future educational and employment opportunities. Additionally, it outlines the flaws inherent in the descriptive …

Language And Communication Deficits In Alzheimer’S Disease: A Review Of The Literature On The Progression, Prevention, And Mediation Of Language Barriers Experienced By Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Alexander Deturck, Jasmine Shapiro, Lily Sanz, Danica Lewis

Psychology and Child Development

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) poses a significant societal problem with regard to the quality of life in the aging population worldwide (Alzheimer’s Association, 2021). One ability that is affected early on in the disease is language processing, which can result in feelings of isolation due to its significant impact on one’s relationships, overall communicative ability, and quality of life (Szatloczki et al., 2015). Thus, it is of great importance to identify evidence-based interventions and preventative measures, as well as communication strategies, helpful to patients and their caregivers. In this review of literature, we examined language difficulties pertaining to semantic verbal fluency, …

Standard Accented Turkish Speakers’ Perception Of Kurdish Accented Speakers: The Factors Behind The Evaluations, Busra Can Jun 2021

Standard Accented Turkish Speakers’ Perception Of Kurdish Accented Speakers: The Factors Behind The Evaluations, Busra Can

Theses

This study investigates the attitudes of standard accented Turkish speakers towards non-standard Kurdish accented speakers of Turkish. Given the fact that there are strict language policies in Turkey, this paper analyzes the effect of such standard language ideologies on listener attitudes using a mixed-methods design. The study included 50 Turkish participants with ages ranging from 19 to 51. Participants completed a survey with 21 questions and could volunteer to also participate in an interview. The survey asked about biographical data, evaluations of various speakers and ratings of accents of Turkish. Using a matched guise technique in the survey, a Kurdish …

Give Us A Chance: The Experiential Knowledge Of Educators Of Color Pursuing An Administration License, Diana Salinas Brown Jun 2021

Give Us A Chance: The Experiential Knowledge Of Educators Of Color Pursuing An Administration License, Diana Salinas Brown

Doctorate in Education

An educational workforce which is representative of the student population it seeks to serve is critical to creating equitable learning opportunities in the increasingly diverse United States. Both students of color and White students must see themselves represented by their educators, and research suggests all students benefit from having teachers of color. Furthermore, it is important for students to see educators of color leading in positions of power. Unfortunately, the current proportion of administrators of color in the field of education in Minnesota, like many states, does not come close to the proportion of students of color in the state’s …

Legal Education's Curricular Tipping Point Toward Inclusive Socratic Teaching, Jamie R. Abrams Jun 2021

Legal Education's Curricular Tipping Point Toward Inclusive Socratic Teaching, Jamie R. Abrams

Hofstra Law Review

Two seismic curricular disruptions create a tipping point for legal education to reform and transform. COVID-19 abruptly disrupted the delivery of legal education. It aligned with a tectonic racial justice reckoning, as more professors and institutions reconsidered their content and classroom cultures, allying with faculty of color who had long confronted these issues actively. The frenzy of these dual disruptions starkly contrasts with the steady drumbeat of critical legal scholars advocating for decades to reduce hierarchies and inequalities in legal education pedagogy.

This context presents a tipping point supporting two pedagogical reforms that leverage this unique moment. First, it is …

‘Fictions Of Time And Space: From Realism To Utopia In Doris Lessing’S The Four-Gated City.’, David Sergeant Jun 2021

‘Fictions Of Time And Space: From Realism To Utopia In Doris Lessing’S The Four-Gated City.’, David Sergeant

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This essay argues for a fuller recognition of the key transitional status of The Four-Gated City (1969) in Doris Lessing’s career. As an attempt to recalibrate the basic coordinates of the realist inheritance, the novel develops a strongly spatial narrative mode that coincides with a desire to write a utopian collective. This is confirmed both by previously unstudied draft material for Briefing for a Descent into Hell (1971) and the published texts that followed. However, in The Four-Gated City this attempt to break from the destructive globalization of the postwar era becomes deeply problematic through its handling of history and …

Mediators Of The Relationship Between Self-Control And Pathological Technology Use: Negative Affect And Cognitive Failures, But Not Self-Efficacy, Robert West, Diana Jiang Jun 2021

Mediators Of The Relationship Between Self-Control And Pathological Technology Use: Negative Affect And Cognitive Failures, But Not Self-Efficacy, Robert West, Diana Jiang

Psychology and Neuroscience Faculty Publications

The widespread adoption of technologies such as smartphones, the Internet, and social media has been associated with the emergence of pathological technology use (e.g., Internet addiction). Prevalence rates of pathological technology use vary widely across age groups, cultures, and medium, although it is not uncommon for rates of mild to moderate pathological use to exceed 20%-30%. These relatively high prevalence rates have motivated researchers to identify the predictors of pathological use. The current study focuses on the relationship be- tween self-control and pathological technology use, and demonstrates that negative affect and cognitive failures, but not self-efficacy, partially mediate the association …

Migrating And Amplifying Ministry To Online Platforms To Pursue The Great Commission, Daniel Elnaam Bagaas Jun 2021

Migrating And Amplifying Ministry To Online Platforms To Pursue The Great Commission, Daniel Elnaam Bagaas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The COVID-19 crisis was unexpected by the universal church. The current pandemic revealed that the universal church and many local churches were not prepared for its’ accompanying challenges or to adapt in general. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, churches across America were required to temporarily cease in-person public gatherings and later to reduce the number of participants once in-person meetings were allowed again. This scenario caused many churches to have to adapt to the current circumstances to continue ministering. The purpose of this DMin research project is to amplify Sonrise Church’s online ministry presence and determine if it garners greater engagement …
