Implementing Translanguaging Pedagogies To Promote Academic Success Of English Learners In An Eighth Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Jenna Kotula
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Many mainstream educators in the United States are under the impression that immersing students in English is the best practice in helping students excel academically. Monoglossic ideologies, which only place prominence on one language in the classroom, can send English Learners (ELs) the message that their cultural and linguistic funds of knowledge are not accepted or valued in the school community. As educators, it must be our mission to create a safe space where learners feel tolerated and eager to share about their unique backgrounds and experiences. Translanguaging practices compete with the common misconception that only the target language should …

Predictive Validity Of The Cu-Tep As An Indicator Of Students’ Academic Achievement In English, Chalatip Charnchairerk
PASAA
The Chulalongkorn University Test of English Proficiency (CU-TEP) is an institutional standardized English proficiency test designed to measure students’ ability to use English for academic purposes. It is required for admission to graduate programs and undergraduate English programs at Chulalongkorn University and some other educational institutions. This study examined how accurate CU-TEP was as a predictor of the academic achievement of a total of 520 first-year Chulalongkorn University students as measured by three compulsory English course results and two English writing task scores. The participants were selected from a cohort of 5,564 freshmen taking CU-TEP in 2014, using the systematic …

Using Songs In Teaching Pronunciation To Young Efl Learners, Gizem Saldıraner, Emrah Cinkara
PASAA
Pronunciation in a foreign language does not have to be native-like. However, intelligible and comprehensible pronunciation is required for understandable communication. How to teach pronunciation in a foreign language classroom matters because the effectiveness of the activities determines the learners’ success. The use of songs in teaching has lots of benefits from motivation to recalling learned items more effectively. In this study, the efficiency of using songs in order to teach young learners pronunciation was investigated in an experimental research design. The experimental group (n=37) was taught using six different songs and the control group (n=35) received texts for pronunciation …

This study investigated the issue of L1 use in the L2 classroom from the students’ perspective. Specifically, the focus of this study was on the characteristics of learners who desired L1 classroom support in their L2 learning. For the purposes of the study, a convenience sample of 380 Japanese university-level EFL participants completed a series of questionnaires and an L2 proficiency test. After the data had been subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis, the results suggested that L2 proficiency could be the strongest predictor of desire for L1 support in the EFL classroom, followed by L2 ambiguity tolerance and L2 …
What Techno-Effective Teachers Mean For Preservice Teachers Of English: A Socio-Constructivist Study, Tuçe Öztürk Karataş, Hasan Çağlar Başol
What Techno-Effective Teachers Mean For Preservice Teachers Of English: A Socio-Constructivist Study, Tuçe Öztürk Karataş, Hasan Çağlar Başol
PASAA
In English language teacher education (ELTE), technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) has gained popularity as it prepares preservice teachers of English for integration of technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge in language teaching. Thus, with the perspective of TPACK, the main objective of this qualitative study based on Kelly’s personal construct theory was to clarify how three preservice teachers structured their constructs of technoeffective teachers. In so doing, this study uncovered three preservice teachers’ personal theories including their beliefs, values, understandings, and assumptions of technoeffective teachers. To elicit the constructs and structures of preservice teachers’ personal theories and elaborate more on …
Absolutist Admissibility At The Icc: Revalidating Authentic Domestic Investigations, Michael A. Newton
Absolutist Admissibility At The Icc: Revalidating Authentic Domestic Investigations, Michael A. Newton
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Current jurisprudential trends empower the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor to override domestic investigative authorities in a manner that violates the letter and spirit of the Rome Statute. Sovereign states have primary responsibility to document, investigate and prevent atrocity crimes. Yet, current ICC practice subverts domestic enforcement efforts. No provision of the Rome Statute permits the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) to substitute its unfettered judgment over the good-faith discretion of domestic prosecutors. ICC judges have created de facto institutional jurisdictional primacy by relying upon mere assertions regarding the insufficiency of domestic efforts. This trend is particularly problematic at the …

Doctrinal Insights From Joseph Smith’S First Vision, Robert L. Millet
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The appearing of the Father and the Son to Joseph Smith is the foundation of this Church,” President David O. McKay stated. “Therein lies the secret of [the Church’s] strength and vitality. . . . What God is, is answered. His relation to his children is clear.” President Ezra Taft Benson pointed out, “Sometimes I think we are so close to [the First Vision] that we don’t fully appreciate its significance and importance and the magnitude of it.” President Benson then added, “The first vision of the Prophet Joseph Smith is bedrock theology in this Church.”
“Oh Say, What Is Truth?”: Approaches To Doctrine, Michael Goodman
“Oh Say, What Is Truth?”: Approaches To Doctrine, Michael Goodman
BYU Studies
The restored gospel of Jesus Christ, like other religious traditions, claims to be based on true doctrines.2 The above hymn, included in the first edition of the Pearl of Great Price, encapsulates the deep longing for truth by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Statements by Church leaders abound extolling the virtue and power of truth, but such statements often beg the question, What is truth? Scripture states that “truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come.”3 Church curricular material further states that “divine …

Phonological Awareness And Phonics, Michelle Erbs
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Research shows that a student's phonics and phonemic awareness skills are learned and practiced through direct instruction with follow up activities. This literature review shows some of the many ways in which teachers could help grow their students' knowledge and deeper understanding of phonics and phonemic awareness. This literature review will spotlight peer reviewed, scholarly journals that were used in order to inform the reader. The results of the many journal findings show that frequent practice of learned phonetic skills will encourage growth of the child’s mind. Direct, explicit instruction followed by activities that include abundant teaching strategies have been …
Who Is A Wise Person? Zhuangzi And Epistemological Discussions Of Wisdom, Shane Ryan, Karyn Lai
Who Is A Wise Person? Zhuangzi And Epistemological Discussions Of Wisdom, Shane Ryan, Karyn Lai
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This essay articulates the contribution that the Zhuangzi can make to contemporary epistemological discussions of wisdom. It suggests that wisdom in the Zhuangzi involves, in part, correctly distinguishing the "heavenly" (or the naturally given) from human artifice. It is important for humanity to understand naturally given conditions (e.g., seasons, climate, forces, mortality) to grasp what is within, and what beyond, our initiatives. To enable this, we need to be openly engaged with the world, rather than approach it with rigid convictions about outcomes or goals. We characterize such openness and readiness to engage as an attitude, that of "epistemic humility." …
High School Teachers' Experiences In Addressing The Challenges Of Written Expression Among Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kevin James Hasinger
High School Teachers' Experiences In Addressing The Challenges Of Written Expression Among Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kevin James Hasinger
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe high school special education teachers’ experiences in teaching written expression to students with autism spectrum disorder in Parker County School District, located near the mid-eastern seaboard of the United States. At the onset of the study, written expression instruction was defined as instruction that facilitates the expression of feelings, thoughts, and ideas on paper to convey meaning to and/or persuade the reader (Flowers & Hayes, 1981). The theory guiding this study was Flower and Hayes’ (1981) cognitive process theory of writing which defined three essential elements of writing: the task …

The Vector Of Scientific Disciplinarity: An Exploration Of Scientific Disciplines And The Future Of Interdisciplinary Research, Emma K. Garrison
The Vector Of Scientific Disciplinarity: An Exploration Of Scientific Disciplines And The Future Of Interdisciplinary Research, Emma K. Garrison
Senior Theses
The disciplinarity of science and the future of interdisciplinarity in science is deeply connected with understanding the scope of scientific practice as well as the demarcation and organization of scientific disciplines. These topics, explored through the structure of their subjects, theories, methods, and interpretation, lead to the conclusion that science and its disciplines are largely defined by the integration of philosophical principles into the ethos of the practices rather than by any specific criteria. The ways in which different disciplines behave and interpret philosophies impact how those disciplines are organized and categorized, resulting in deep philosophical and perspective divides between …

Involuntary Celibates’ Experiences Of And Grievance Over Sexual Exclusion And The Potential Threat Of Violence Among Those Active In An Online Incel Forum, Anne Speckhard, Molly Ellenberg, Jesse Morton, Alexander Ash
Journal of Strategic Security
This article represents the largest ever primary data-based study of involuntary celibates (incels), previously studied nearly exclusively through analysis of online postings. The incel movement has been characterized by some as a radical ideology, with mass murderers such as Elliot Rodger, Alek Minassian, and Chris Harper Mercer being portrayed as prototypical of the movement. However, there is a dearth of research through direct questioning of incels and therefore very little nuanced understanding of the community, its shared grievances, and its opinions regarding violence in its name. The present study of over 250 self-identified incels demonstrates that although the majority of …

Open Pedagogy: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Findings, Virginia Clinton-Lisell
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Open licensing used in open educational resources allows for teaching and learning practices that are not possible with traditional copyright. There is a growing body of empirical research on open pedagogy. However, definitions and instantiations of open pedagogy vary in the literature. The purpose of this review was to systematically search and synthesize empirical findings on open pedagogy. In this, the definitions of open pedagogy across empirical reports were examined. Generally, open pedagogy was defined in the context of open licensing affordances; however, there were exceptions particularly when examining faculty experiences with open pedagogy. Synthesized findings may be used by …

Teacher Professionalism In Light Of Biometric Controls On Teacher Mobility And Autonomy, David L. Knott
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, I investigate the introduction of biometric technology, specifically fingerprint scanners, for the purposes of managing faculty members’ working hours at a higher education institution (HEI) located in the Middle Eastern Gulf States. Utilizing semi-structured interviews to collect qualitative data, three expatriate teachers of English discussed their experiences before and after management installed the fingerprint scanners, discussing the influence such a change has on their professional identities and the additional impacts on their teaching, their identification with the institution, and the overall culture of the HEI. The results show that the existence of the fingerprint scanners adversely affects …

Identity Transformation Through Substance Use Disorder Recovery: Introducing The Six Stage Model, Naomi Watkins, Austin Mcneill Brown, Kayce Courson
The Qualitative Report
Narratives of substance use disorder recovery experience can provide useful qualitative conceptual categories and novel theories about the way in which recovery is experienced by individuals. This information can better inform definitions, concepts, and supports for recovery processes. The current study reviewed 30 written personal recovery biographies which were contained within student applications to the collegiate recovery program housed in the Center for Young Adult Addiction and Recovery at Kennesaw State University. Using grounded theory methodology, common benchmarks, or topographic recovery features were revealed involving the evolution of identity as an inter-negotiated process throughout the addiction and recovery biographies (Charmaz, …

Most teacher education assessments are criticized for lacking validity and reliability. This study describes the process of developing the Observation of Field Performance rubric to assess initial teacher candidates’ classroom performance and establishing the content validity as well as reliability of the rubric. A panel of content area experts determined that 10 out of 12 items of the rubric were essential and the CVR was above the acceptable range for all 12 items, indicating that the rubric had a strong content validity. Additionally, the analysis of instructors’ ratings on the rubric showed that the rubric had good level of internal …
Analysis Of Disproportionality In Discipline And The Effects Of Positive Behavior Supports Within Special Education, Cutler T. Ruby
Analysis Of Disproportionality In Discipline And The Effects Of Positive Behavior Supports Within Special Education, Cutler T. Ruby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nationwide, school districts are required (IDEA, 2004) to implement positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) for all students receiving special education services. These PBIS are reported to reduce problem behaviors and increase prosocial behaviors when implemented with fidelity (Crone et al., 2015). With a reduction of problem behaviors an expected reduction of discipline referrals should follow along with a reduction in days spent in exclusionary discipline for students in special education. Reducing days in exclusionary discipline is desired due to a strong research base linking the practice to several negative outcomes (Marchbanks et al., 2015) along with data demonstrating these …
Victims, Right?, Anna Roberts
Victims, Right?, Anna Roberts
Cardozo Law Review
In criminal contexts, a “victim” is typically defined as someone who has been harmed by a crime. Yet the word commonly appears in legal contexts that precede the adjudication of whether a crime has occurred. Each U.S. state guarantees “victims’ rights,” including many that apply pre-adjudication; ongoing “Marsy’s Law” efforts seek to expand and constitutionalize them nationwide. At trial, advocates, judges, and jury instructions employ this word even though the existence or not of crime (and thus of a crime victim) is a central question to be decided. This usage matters in part because of its possible consequences: it risks …
Unified Conversational Recommendation Policy Learning Via Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning, Yang Deng, Yaliang Li, Fei Sun, Bolin Ding, Wai Lam
Unified Conversational Recommendation Policy Learning Via Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning, Yang Deng, Yaliang Li, Fei Sun, Bolin Ding, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conversational recommender systems (CRS) enable the traditional recommender systems to explicitly acquire user preferences towards items and attributes through interactive conversations. Reinforcement learning (RL) is widely adopted to learn conversational recommendation policies to decide what attributes to ask, which items to recommend, and when to ask or recommend, at each conversation turn. However, existing methods mainly target at solving one or two of these three decision-making problems in CRS with separated conversation and recommendation components, which restrict the scalability and generality of CRS and fall short of preserving a stable training procedure. In the light of these challenges, we propose …

Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing
Articles
Short fiction is a format heartily embraced by the Irish literary imagination since the nineteenth century. This paper takes a gastrocritical approach to investigate the role of food in selected stories from the recently published anthology The Art of the Glimpse (2020). It shows that through the years, food and foodways have been valuable tools for Irish writers, providing setting and context, themes and symbols, plot points, conflicts, characterisation, as well as the quintessential epiphanies.

Smart Power In The Iraq Surge 2007-2008, Russell N. Reiling
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation explores U.S. actions in the military “Surge” in Iraq from 2007-2008. Focus is on the entwined utilization of coercive and attractive power or smart power as an enabler of success and change from prior U.S. strategies in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. The analysis is based upon an extensive set of interviews with operational participants in the Surge from across the Executive Branch. Results show that smart power was an important element of the Surge and its use facilitated success, but that doing smart power was not a simple matter of achieving some mix of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ power, but …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Parenting children with speech and language delays have many challenges because children require a different approach to their education and everyday living. Having children with speech and language delays in Mexican immigrant families can be especially difficult. The language barriers and challenges, challenges to their cultural beliefs, and the willingness and time to talk to a specialist. When parents have not acquired specific valuable skills to work with speech and language delay, they have difficulty communicating and meeting a child's needs. Most importantly, they don't know other forms of communication they can use, such as beginner sign language and communication …
