Control System Synthesis With Self-Adapting Regulator By Interactive Adaptation Method, Isamiddin Xakimovich Siddikov, Renata Nikolayevna Izmaylova
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The research results on the creation of a self-adapting control system for a nonlinear dynamic object based on the theory of intelligent control using interactive adaptation methods have been presented. The lack of an accurate description and the nonlinearity of the dynamic properties of the object under study, the presence of mutual influence of cross communication channels in the control circuits, as well as the influence of various types of uncertainties associated with the lack of a priori information about the process, significantly complicate the solution of the problem of synthesis of highly efficient control systems for dynamic objects, which …

Curated OER Collections
This OER curation is an annotated bibliography of prospective OER for the GVSU course FRE 202: Intermediate French II: Language and Culture. The instructor requested particular attention to materials related to inclusive (e.g., gender-inclusive) language and writing, as well as Francophone culture outside of France itself.
Note: this bibliography was assembled by searchers not fluent in French, which limited our ability to exhaustively search French-language collections.
The Larger The Better: Analysis Of A Scalable Spectral Clustering Algorithm With Cosine Similarity, Guangliang Chen
The Larger The Better: Analysis Of A Scalable Spectral Clustering Algorithm With Cosine Similarity, Guangliang Chen
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Chen (2018) proposed a scalable spectral clustering algorithm for cosine similarity to handle the task of clustering large data sets. It runs extremely fast, with a linear complexity in the size of the data, and achieves state of the art accuracy. This paper conducts perturbation analysis of the algorithm to understand the effect of discarding a perturbation term in an eigendecomposition step. Our results show that the accuracy of the approximation by the scalable algorithm depends on the connectivity of the clusters, their separation and sizes, and is especially accurate for large data sets.

An Ecology Of Learning: Secondary Mathematics Teacher Candidate Learning While Co-Teaching In Early Clinical Practice, Cynthia A. Castro-Minnehan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have called for more empirical research exploring better ways to organize clinical practice around teacher candidate (TC) learning and the coursework-fieldwork gap. This study responds to their call by exploring secondary mathematics TC learning in early clinical placements that use co-teaching. Further, this study views co-teaching in clinical practice through the lens of an activity system. An activity system conceptualizes co-teaching in clinical practice as a complex learning environment or a learning ecology. This study uses a convergent mixed methods design. Findings reveal evidence of TC learning of eight key practices associated with co-teaching in their early clinical placements. …
On The Struggles And Experiences Of Southeast Asian American Academics, Long T. Bui
On The Struggles And Experiences Of Southeast Asian American Academics, Long T. Bui
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This article examines Southeast Asian Americans (SEAA) academics in the U.S. academy, relating their complex positionalities within higher education to their communities and societies. While many educational studies have been done on SEAA students, almost none focus on professional scholars and college faculty. Combining cultural-structural critique with close analysis of public writings and personal interviews, the article finds that that SEAA are ignored, and/or tokenized in the Ivory Tower due to structural as well as epistemological issues. It indicates that the public discourse and policies about Southeast Asians in academia not only neglects racial and class hierarchies, but obscures issues …

Knowledge plays a strategically important role to success and continuous growth of our life. In information exposition coupled with the electronic or virtual era has brought a great change to libraries and its working environment. In today’s working environment the role of libraries and librarians changed from storehouse of information caretaker to information manager and at the same time the forms and distribution of information also took a new shape in a new way. This is due to the advancement of ICT as well as contemporary societal need. Due to this change, library and information science professionals also need a …
Challenges Of Access To Post-Secondary Music Education Programs For People Of Color, C. Michael Palmer
Challenges Of Access To Post-Secondary Music Education Programs For People Of Color, C. Michael Palmer
Visions of Research in Music Education
Access to music teacher education programs in U.S. higher education is a growing concern among music educators, scholars, and critical theorists. A variety of factors can play a role in who gains access to a particular institution and program, including but not limited to (a) socioeconomic status, (b) test scores, (c) race, (d) gender, and (e) cultural expectations (i.e., “accepted” music styles). Although each of these issues is important and often related to the others, the issue of race is markedly significant in view of a field that is predominantly white and in a society where racism still plays a …
Permission To Play: Obstacles And Open Spaces In Music-Making, Chelsea C. Green
Permission To Play: Obstacles And Open Spaces In Music-Making, Chelsea C. Green
Visions of Research in Music Education
When the word play is used to describe music-making, the implication is that play is a sophisticated phenomenon involving an interaction of so many elements that it is both engrossing and beyond calculation. This definition of play hails from the field of philosophy and is the focus of this article. It is chiefly inspired by Hans George Gadamer’s magnum opus Truth and Method, in which he argues that art is able to communicate shared truths across both time and place via the phenomenon of play. Section I: Play is an illumination of Gadamer’s concept of play as it relates specifically …
Privileging Culture Through Incorporating Folk Music In The General Elementary Classroom: Implications For Teacher Education, Stephanie Andrews
Privileging Culture Through Incorporating Folk Music In The General Elementary Classroom: Implications For Teacher Education, Stephanie Andrews
Visions of Research in Music Education
In this paper, I argue for the integration of folk music from children’s home cultures in the general elementary classroom as a means to privilege culture. I argue that this approach to general elementary education should be incorporated into teacher training programs. While many teacher education programs presently overlook the integration of folk music from various cultures, this approach has the potential to become a valuable component of teacher education. I investigate ways in which teachers can create multiple pathways for learning by privileging the home cultures of children. This can be accomplished through the integration of music instruction that …

Rethinking Music "Appreciation", Marissa Silverman
Rethinking Music "Appreciation", Marissa Silverman
Visions of Research in Music Education
This study reflects upon and explains the strategies developed in teaching music appreciation in a large urban secondary school. These reflections were developed through an action research study that took place during the 2005-2006 school year. Taken in the broadest, possible view, this study is a small example of how globalization and its offshoots – diversity and multiculturalism – are inherently paradoxical. Fundamentally, these phenomena are characterized by trans-national flows of capital, labor, communications, and culture that tend to unite and broaden many aspects of peoples’ perspectives and identities – personal, creative, and musical. However, the same forces that power …

Chaos, Karen V. Lee
Visions of Research in Music Education
The author writes an autobiographical reflection after attending a hand drumming concert. The rhythmic grooves liberate her mind and body while she reflects on a major transition in her life. Writing helps her reflect on how the concert becomes a pedagogical context forthe emotional and intellectual chaos. In the end, autobiography moves her to gain a deeper understanding about how the pedagogical aspect from the concert enables change.
Difference Out Of Place: Feminist War Machines In Music Education, Elizabeth Gould
Difference Out Of Place: Feminist War Machines In Music Education, Elizabeth Gould
Visions of Research in Music Education
Speaking out of place in a profession where it is characterized as “extreme” and “a special interest,” feminism in music education serves as a catalyst for interrogating the profession’s philosophies, practices, and discourses. It has proven to be necessary and influential to the extent that it cannot be ignored, responding to problems like gender segregation and stereotyping of music education positions, music instruments and musical roles, exclusionary performance practices and the music canon, all as implicated by sexuality and race. Responding to the exigencies of these and related issues and self-imposed imperatives to posit alternatives, feminism has been deployed as …
Music Education As Transformative Practice: Creating New Frameworks For Learning Music Through A Freirian Perspective, Patrick Schmidt
Music Education As Transformative Practice: Creating New Frameworks For Learning Music Through A Freirian Perspective, Patrick Schmidt
Visions of Research in Music Education
The educational perspectives presented by Paulo Freire have been thoroughly analyzed and linked to the general education of children in urban America. Additional studies have focused on Freire’s pedagogy in higher education. Nevertheless, the number of studies that have examined music education and the pedagogy of music teaching and learning as a kind of pedagogy of emancipation are far more restricted, have become available only recently and are still not widely dispersed or read. In this article, Freirian concepts serve to develop frameworks that define the philosophy of a Critical Pedagogy for Music Education. This new conception borrows from Freire’s …

An Initiative To Improve Cultural Competence Among Gyn/Ob Providers, Lynn R. Mcdonald, Joshua L. Schwarz, Stephen J. Martin, Susan Brown Will, Shari M. Lawson, Tanesha Stokes, Shannon C. Riley, Katie Reynolds, Betty Chou
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Healthcare cultural competence is defined as a process of delivering care by meeting the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of diverse populations, and should be optimized at all organizational levels to reduce racial disparities and poor patient outcomes. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recognizes the importance of cultural competence and states that research should be conducted to identify and combat barriers that impede equitable care. In this prospective, pre- and post-intervention study design, we used the Healthcare Provider Cultural Competence Instrument (HPCCI) to measure five dimensions of cultural competence within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in …

Thriving Through Human Centered Approaches To Change, Annie Bélanger, Megan Musolff
Presentations
Can you think of a time when you have thrived through change? What made that possible? How did the change effort center on organizational values and engage those impacted? Most traditional change management practices focus on process and implementation over listening, compassion, and healing. By using human-centered change leadership approaches, we will explore ways to align change efforts with organizational values. We will identify factors that can lead to a change that harness the strengths of the team, while also make space for voices to be heard. Together, participants will consider how the Bridges’ Transition Model enables effective and compassionate …
Japanese-English Code-Switching By Postwar Speakers In Contemporary America, Andre John Shepherd
Japanese-English Code-Switching By Postwar Speakers In Contemporary America, Andre John Shepherd
Dissertations and Theses
In her examination of Japanese-English bilingualism in Toronto, Nishimura (1995b) demonstrated that second-generation Japanese-Canadians varied their speech dependent on the audience they were addressing. According to her, the Japanese-Canadians spoke primarily in English to fellow second-generation speakers, while maintaining conversations in Japanese with those who had spent their formative years in Japan. However, when addressing audiences composed of both groups, they switched back and forth evenly between the two languages.
Following research done by Woolard (1989) on the effects of societal influences on language, the state of the Japanese-Canadians can be related to the breakup of the ethnic enclaves in …
There Is Only One Texas Constitution, Joshua Morrow
There Is Only One Texas Constitution, Joshua Morrow
St. Mary's Law Journal
The pre-ratification text of the Texas Constitution appeared throughout the state in conflicting English-and foreign-language copies. Some commentators argue that it is impossible to know which copy the people ratified, or even that Texas does not have a constitution. These arguments create theoretical problems, because courts interpreting the constitution assume that it consists of fixed and determinable text. And the principle of popular sovereignty precludes denying that the constitution exists. The conflicting copies also create practical problems. Are the legislature’s acts void for failing to include a Spanish-language enacting clause? May the state imprison citizens for debt, since the German …

Utilization Of Telephone Outreach And Telemedicine To Improve Diabetic Outcomes, Nicolas Yemm
Utilization Of Telephone Outreach And Telemedicine To Improve Diabetic Outcomes, Nicolas Yemm
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Diabetic adherence is paramount to achieving adequate glycemic control. Telephone outreach and utilization of telemedicine can improve diabetic adherence through closer monitoring and removing barriers to access for care. The goal of the project was to improve the dashboard HbA1c quality metric within the IM office. The office dashboard HbA1c metric initially was in the “red threshold”, which means <70% of patients aged 18-75 years old with diabetes had a HbA1c <8%. This project involved performing telephone outreach to contact diabetic patients who were due for office follow-up to offer telemedicine as a convenient option for patient evaluation. In addition, the secondary goals of the project included identifying social determinants presenting barriers to diabetic care plan adherence. The results indicated telephone outreach and telemedicine use may help achieve better glycemic control in diabetic patients. This project demonstrated improvement in HbA1c dashboard metrics to the “yellow threshold”, indicating 71% of patients (18-75 years old) in the office with diabetes had a HbA1c <8%. Several limitations were identified, including a short implementation window (6 weeks), lack of ability to assess whether providers were instituting project recommendations, staff engagement, and internet bandwidth/technology literacy issues when using telemedicine. From a long-term implementation perspective, the project showed telephone outreach and telemedicine are useful tools that can positively impact poorly controlled diabetic patients to improve glycemic control. However, the limitations of the project will likely need to be addressed to achieve long-term implementation of the project methods.
Automatic Short Answer Grading Using Deep Learning, Jinzhu Luo
Automatic Short Answer Grading Using Deep Learning, Jinzhu Luo
Theses and Dissertations
Under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional in-person teaching has undergone significant changes. Online courses become an essential education method. However, online teaching lacks adequate evaluation approaches. That's why exams are still indispensable. However, grading short answer exam questions can be an onerous task. In this work, we propose a novel Automatic Short Answer Grading (ASAG) model based on the Sentence BERT model. On the Short Answer Scoring V2.0 dataset, our proposed model shows improvements on accuracy, Marco F1 score, and Weighted F1 score comparing to the results obtained from the BERT model. In addition, we also compare different …
